A $130,000 Keeneland September grad, the dark bay is a half-sister to the commonly owned La La Chandon (Street Sense), a maiden winner at second asking in Japan in 2021. REGALO FIORI (JPN) (f, 3, West Coast–Legallini, by Hard Spun) was acquired in utero for $80,000 at the 2019 Keeneland November Sale and is maternal granddaughter of MGSW/GISP Dust and Diamonds (Vindication), whose son Do Deuce (Jpn) (Heart's Cry {Jpn}) won the G1 Asahi Hai Futurity at two and last year's G1 Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby). KISS ON THE CHEEK (JPN) (f, 3, Curlin–Eskimo Kisses, by To Honor and Serve) is the first produce from her dam, who took down the colors of Midnight Bisou (Midnight Lute) in the 2018 GI Alabama S. and was purchased by Shadai Farm with this filly in utero for $2.3 million to rank as the second highest-priced offering of the 2019 Keeneland November Sale. A half-sister to Grade I-placed Silver Ride (Candy Ride {Arg}), Eskimo Kisses was produced by Silver Colors (Mr. Greeley), a daughter of champion 3-year-old filly and GI Kentucky Derby heroine Winning Colors (Caro {Ire}), who is also the granddam of two-time Japanese stakes winner Cheerful Smile (Jpn) (Sunday Silence). 6th-NKY, ¥11,850,000, Newcomers, 3yo, 1800m
BOLD ZONE (c, 3, Mendelssohn–Halo Dolly, by Popular), closely related to Grade III-winning turf sprinter Barraza (Into Mischief), was an unfinished product when hammering for $40,000 at KEESEP in 2021, but improved nicely and fetched $280,000 from Katsumi Yoshida at OBS March last year after breezing an eighth of a mile in :10 1/5. Two-time graded winner Halo Dolly brought $300,000 from Spendthrift Farm at KEENOV in 2014 and was sold in foal to Authentic for $110,000 at the same event in 2021. B-Spendthrift Farm LLC (KY)

Emblem Road Makes Successful Return in Riyadh

Prince Saud bin Salman Abdulaziz's Emblem Road (Quality Road), who caused one of the biggest upsets of the 2022 racing season anywhere in the world when defeating an international field in the $20-million G1 Saudi Cup, took a major step towards a defense of that title with a convincing four-length success in a $25,289 allowance going the one-turn 1600 meters at King Abdulaziz Racetrack in Riyadh Friday.

Drawn gate four and asked to carry 62kg (136 pounds), the mount of Alexis Moreno was clearly last into stride and was guided into the clear inside the opening quarter-mile, then proceeded to improve his position into midfield passing the halfway point. Some six or seven wide into the bend, the 5-year-old caught the eye approaching the 600-meter marker as he began to wind up with a menacing run nearing the straight. Racing on his left lead, Emblem Road struck to the lead with about a furlong to travel and was pushed out under mild hands-and-heels encouragement to score by four lengths (see below).

A perennial leading local jockey, Moreno guided Emblem Road to three consecutive scores in 2021 and 2022, including the $213,000 Prince Faisal Cup, a local Saudi Cup prep, this time last year. When Moreno elected to retain the mount on King's Cup hero Making Miracles (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) for the Saudi Cup, that opened the door for Wigberto Ramos to take over aboard Emblem Road and the duo came storming down the center of the track to best Country Grammer (Tonalist) by a half-length, with Midnight Bourbon (Tiznow) third. Making Miracles was fourth.

Emblem Road, $230,000 Keeneland September yearling and $80,000 OBS June breezer, was winning for the eighth time from 11 starts overall. He was last seen in France last July when he finished fifth of sixth as the somewhat surprising favorite in the G3 Grand Prix de Vichy, his only start on the turf to date.

HAKAISHIN (c, 3, Runhappy–Elarose, by Storm Cat) looks to become the fifth foal from as many to the races for his dam, a daughter of three-time Grade I winner and foundation mare Take Charge Lady (Dehere). The latter's produce include GISW sires Take Charge Indy (A.P. Indy) and champion MGISW Will Take Charge (Unbridled's Song); GISW As Time Goes By (American Pharoah); and the dams of champion Take Charge Brandi (Giant's Causeway) and MGISW Omaha Beach (War Front); and of GSW/GISP 'TDN Rising Star' Charge It (Tapit). MONTE LUNA (f, 3, Union Rags–Light the Sky, by Tapit) cost $75,000 as a KEESEP yearling and is out of a half-sister to champion and GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner Stevie Wonderboy (Stephen Got Even) and Theyskens' Theory (Bernardini), a Group 3 winner and placed in Group 1 company as a juvenile in England and second to Winter Memories (El Prado {Ire}) in the GI Garden City S. in 2011. AIR METEORA (c, 3, Goldencents–Nokaze, by Empire Maker) turned in a very promising effort on his lone racetrack appearance, making the majority of the running in an 1800-meter newcomers' event Nov. 20 only to be run down close home (see below, SC 8). This slight cutback in trip can only help the half-brother to GSW Air Almas (Majestic Warrior), SW Air Fanditha (Hat Trick {Jpn}) and the talented Air Sage (Point of Entry). Nokaze is herself a half-sister to Yuzuru (Medaglia d'Oro), the stakes-winning dam of GSW Yuugiri (Shackleford), an impressive Oaklawn allowance winner first off a near eight-month absence at Oaklawn Dec. 30. Justify Filly Tries Two Turns on Nakayama Debut

In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Here are the horses of interest for this Saturday running at Nakayama Racecourse. The highlight of the weekend and one of the year's main events, the G1 Arima Kinen (Grand Prix) has attracted most every top galloper in Japan. JASPER TIARA (f, 2, Justify–Sweetgrass, by Street Sense) is the first foal to the races for her dam, placed no fewer than five times at the graded-stakes level for Six Column Stables and Randy Bloch and purchased by Baccari Bloodstock for $250,000 at the 2017 Fasig-Tipton November Sale. The May 3 foal, who was scratched from an intended debut in July, was one of 12 youngsters purchased by trainer Hideyuki Mori at Keeneland September last fall, hammering for $150,000. A full-sister to Jasper Tiara fetched $160,000 at this year's KEESEP sale, while Sweetgrass was sold on for $135,000 in foal to City of Light at last month's Keeneland November sale.
