Sunday Shoes ‘Kicks Off’ With ‘Rising Star’ Debut

Lael Stables' Sunday Shoes (f, 3, Pioneerof the Nile–Silvertoni, by Tapit) was forced to cover stacks of ground when making her career debut in a 6 1/2-furlong maiden under the Wednesday night lights at Turfway and turned in a spectacular effort to earn the 'TDN Rising Star' distinction.

A $500,000 acquisition by Michael Hernon on behalf of Roy and Gretchen Jackson's operation from the Woodford draft at Keeneland September in 2021, Sunday Shoes was sent off as the 9-2 third choice on debut and was one of the first to break the line from her double-digit draw before easing back to sit in about midfield, albeit well out into the track. Waited with into the final three-eighths of a mile, the bay uncorked an eye-catching rally around the turn while still trapped out and was no better than five deep at the entrance to the stretch. Sunday Shoes wanted to have a good look around once she made the lead, but she was kept to her task and pulled nicely clear of what appeared on paper to be a strong group. OXO Equine's second-time starter Upper Case (American Pharoah), well-beaten behind future GISW Chocolate Gelato (Practical Joke) at Saratoga last August, was runner-up here as the 9-5 chalk, while firster Chelsea Pier (Arrogate) spiced up the triple at 24-1.

Sunday Shoes is a sixth 'Rising Star' for the much-missed Pioneerof the Nile, who is the sire of Lael's gifted turf sprinter Arrest Me Red, also a Ward trainee. Woodford Thoroughbreds acquired the winner's stakes-winning dam–also second in the 2016 GII Adirondack S.–for $800,000 in foal to Quality Road at the 2018 Keeneland November sale.

Silvertoni, herself a $230,000 KEESEP yearling, is a grand-daughter of Grade I winner Easy Now, a half-sister to the legendary champion and nine-time Grade I winner Easy Goer (Alydar) and GI Ballerina S. heroine Cadillacing (Alydar). Fourth dam Relaxing (Buckpasser) was the champion older mare of 1981 and Broodmare of the Year in 1989.

Keeneland To Re-Offer Six September Sale Yearlings

A half-dozen recently turned 2-year-olds–four colts and two fillies–originally sold for a cumulative $4.85 million at last year's Keeneland September Sale, are being reoffered by Keeneland, the auction house announced Friday. Offers will be accepted from Feb. 27 through Mar. 1. Details on the horses and the offer process are available here.

Each of the six horses is currently in training in Ocala with David Scanlon or Niall Brennan and are available for in-person inspection by appointment. Contact info may be accessed at the link above.

The six horses were acquired by Richard Knight Bloodstock during the September sale. Tattersalls also re-offered 17 horses earlier this year purchased by Knight for gross receipts of better than 11 million guineas at last year's October Yearling Sale.

“These horses are actively in training with David and Niall and should fit well into anyone's program, particularly end-users who are looking at summer and fall racing opportunities,” Keeneland Vice President of Sales Tony Lacy said. “Prospective buyers in the Ocala area are welcome to inspect the horses in person. We also encourage those participating remotely to view the walking and training videos on www.Keeneland.com/reoffer.”

Colt by Constitution out of Grade III winner Cozze Up Lady (Cozzene); half-brother to GISW Kimari (Munnings); originally purchased for $1.3 million;
Colt by Omaha Beach out of Grade III winner Daisy (Blame), purchased for $400,000;
Colt by Street Sense out of Bambalina (Bernardini) whose second dam is champion Perfect Sting (Red Ransom), a $725,000 acquisition.

A Gun Runner–Just Wicked (Tapit) filly whose full-sister Wicked Halo won the GII Lexus Raven Run S. and GII Prioress S., a $1.1-million sale.

“Given the quality of these individuals and the interest they have attracted both in September and now, we feel an invitation to make an offer is the best way at this time to ensure a fair and transparent process for prospective buyers,” Keeneland President and CEO Shannon Arvin said.

Current pedigree pages, walking and training videos and pre-sale veterinary X-rays and endoscopic video submitted to Keeneland's online Repository are available at the link aboe. Veterinary exams were conducted on each horse as of Feb. 2. A second veterinary exam will be done within 10 days of sale, and those results will be available in the online Repository. Information on the 2-year-olds will be updated on www.keeneland.com/reoffer through noon on Mar. 1.

Offerors are encouraged to inspect fully any horse they may seek to purchase. Horses will be sold on an “AS-IS” basis, subject to the terms of the Bill of Sale available at the website.

Practical Move Back To Work

Practical Move (Practical Joke), upset winner of the GII Los Alamitos Futurity Dec. 17, returned to the worktab for the first time since at Santa Anita Saturday morning, drilling a half-mile in a strong :47.80 (7/60). Trainer Tim Yakteen told the Santa Anita press office that the bay colt–bred by Chad Brown and Head of Plains Partners–'moved well' in the work.

“Well give him a few more works and see where we're at, but we're looking at sometime in late February or early March,” said Yakteen. “We have a few options.” The conditioner indicated that there is a possibility Practical Move could ship out of town for his sophomore debut.

Should he remain local, the $90,000 Keeneland September buyback turned $230,000 OBS April breezer could take in the traditional GI Kentucky Derby preps in the GII San Felipe S. Mar. 4 en route to the GI Santa Anita Derby a month farther down the road.

Yakteen, who was the trainer of record for 'TDN Rising Star' Taiba (Gun Runner) and Messier (Empire Maker) in last year's Run for the Roses, is looking forward to potential return trip to Louisville.

“Anytime you have a nice 3-year-old in the barn it's always exciting,” he said.

IDLE CHATTER (Justify) draws one from the outside in a field of 10 sophomores for this career debut for the Jack Sisterson stable. The chestnut is the latest foal out of Storm Dixie (Catienus), who was signed for by the late Olin Gentry for $1.9 million in foal to Tapit at the 2014 Fasig-Tipton November Sale about 18 months after the mare's foal Princess of Sylmar (Majestic Warrior) upset the GI Longines Kentucky Oaks. RINGSIDE (Curlin), a $1.3-million KEESEP acquisition by M.V. Magnier, is the latest to race out of the stakes-winning Dashing Debby, one of two second-crop juvenile stakes winners for Medaglia d'Oro, and who went on to produce SW Bronze Star (Tapit) as well as Dawn the Destroyer (Speightstown), a stakes-winning sprinter who was second in the 2019 GI Ballerina S. and third in a GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint while racing in the Stonestreet silks. KAUAI DAN (Quality Road), bought back on a bid of $240k at KEESEP in 2021, is a son of 'TDN Rising Star' Kauai Katie (Malibu Moon), a $490k Fasig-Tipton Florida juvenile purchase by Stonestreet who would go on to take four graded stakes and finish third in the 2013 GI Acorn S. Kauai Katie is the year-younger full-sister to Winding Way, who achieved the unprecedented and never-since-matched feat of being named a 'Rising Star' just one day and 3000 miles to the west after Kauai Katie. Validating her 'Rising Star' tag, Winding Way won the GIII Rancho Bernardo H. and has since produced Skinner (Curlin), a $510k OBSAPR breezer who was third in last year's GI Runhappy Del Mar Futurity.
