Up To The Mark Posts Towering Victory in Manhattan

Repole Stable and St Elias Stable's UP TO THE MARK (c, 4, Not This Time–Belle's Finale, by Ghostzapper) consolidated his position at the top of the American turf division with a second straight dominating performance at the top level in Saturday's GI Resorts World Casino Manhattan S. at Belmont Park. Made the 8-5 chalk on the strength of a much-the-best victory in the GI Old Forester Bourbon Turf Classic on the Kentucky Derby undercard at Churchill Downs May 6, the $450,000 Keeneland September graduate was away in good order and landed just ahead of centerfield as longshot Strong Quality (Quality Road) set out at a quick tempo in advance of Ocean Atlantique (American Pharoah). Put to sleep through the middle furlongs by Irad Ortiz, Jr., Up To the Mark bided his time around the second turn, was given his cue in upper stretch and blew the race open from there, running out a facile winner. Soldier Rising (GB) (Frankel {GB}) outfinished GII Fort Marcy S. hero Ottoman Fleet (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) for second. Sales history: $450,000 Ylg '20 KEESEP. O-Repole Stable & St Elias Stable; B-Ramspring Farm (KY); T-Todd Pletcher.

Justify Filly Looking For Another ‘Awesome Result’ in Japan

In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Here are the horses of interest for this weekend running at Hanshin and Hakodate Racecourses:

Saturday, June 10, 2023
12th-HSN, ¥15,200,000 ($109k), Allowance, 3yo/up, 1800m
AWESOME RESULT (f, 3, Justify–Blossomed, by Deputy Minister) opened her account with a 2 1/2-length victory over this course and distance last November (see below, SC 7) and makes her return to the races here. Produced by a half-sister to GSW Cinemine (Mining) and to the stakes-winning dam of three-time Japanese winner Ju Taro (Arrogate), Awesome Results is herself kin to 2018 GI Spinaway S. upsetter Sippican Harbor (Orb) and to the Grade III-placed Bodacious Babe (Mineshaft). Jockey Yuga Kawada sits narrowly atop the jockeys' premiership on 66 wins–two better than Christophe Lemaire–and has the assignment Saturday. B-Orpendale/Chelston/Wynatt (KY)

Sunday, June 11, 2023
11th-HAK, Hakodate Sprint S.-G3, ¥77.3m ($556k), 3yo/up, 6fT
JASPER KRONE (c, 4, Frosted–Fancy Kitten, by Kitten's Joy), a $25,000 Keeneland September yearling turned $90,000 OBS March breezer, has punched well above his weight on this tough circuit and enters off back-to-back scores over easy ground, capped by a victory going 1000 meters at Niigata May 7. The colt's stakes-placed dam was purchased for $10,000 by Machmer Hall in a private transaction at the 2018 Fasig-Tipton February Sale. Fancy Kitten's current 2-year-old, Ngannou (Mendelssohn), fetched $120,000 at KEESEP last fall and is up to five furlongs in his work at Santa Anita. B-Machmer Hall & Godolphin (KY)

American Pharoah Filly Bags Summertime Oaks

Window Shopping (American Pharoah) pounced on long-time leader Ancient Peace (War Front) with a furlong to run in Saturday's GII Summertime Oaks and edged away late to a first win at the graded stakes level.

Beaten for speed, the $700,000 Keeneland September purchase settled between rivals just behind the pace which was set inside by GI Kentucky Oaks third The Alys Look (Connect) with outside pressure from Ancient Peace. The well-backed second favorite, The Alys Look began to back out of it with three-eighths of a mile to race, leaving Ancient Peace alone on the lead, while farther back, Lily Poo (Tapiture) was traveling ominously well and loomed a threat three deep into the stretch. Ancient Peace battled on bravely at the fence, but Window Shopping kept grinding away beneath Hector Berrios, grabbed the front-runner with less than a furlong to travel and inched clear.

A troubled sixth in a one-mile turf maiden at Del Mar last November, Window Shopping romped by 16 1/2 lengths in an off-turf test going a mile here Mar. 17. That effort earned her a shot at the Apr. 8 GII Santa Anita Oaks and the chestnut gave a decent account of herself when seven lengths third and beaten just a half-length for second behind the then-unbeaten 'TDN Rising Star' Faiza (Girvin).

Pedigree Notes:

Window Shopping is the 36th worldwide stakes winner and 22nd group/graded winner for Triple Crown winner American Pharoah. Window Shopping's dam posted her career high in the 2015 GIII Monmouth Oaks and was second to America (A.P. Indy) in that year's GIII Turnback the Alarm H. Connections had her in training for a time at four in 2016, but she did not make another trip to the races and was purchased by International Equities Holding for $700,000 at Keeneland January in 2017, the second priciest offering of the auction.

Delightful Joy's first foal was Zainalarab (War Front), a $1-million graduate of the 2019 Keeneland September Sale, before Window Shopping was hammered down to Steve Young for $700,000 at the same event two years later. Delightful Joy is also represented by a yearling Into Mischief filly and was most recently covered by the same sire.

The cross of American Pharoah over Tapit mares has resulted in GISW Harvey's Lil Goil and Japanese listed winner Reframe.
