‘Stars’ Align for Shadwell, Pletcher

When Kiaran McLaughlin announced his retirement earlier this spring, Shadwell Stable’s Vice President and General Manager Rick Nichols already had a trainer’s name in the back of his mind who could potentially fill the void.

“Actually, it was kind of a no-brainer,” Nichols said. “Through Kiaran, I got to know Todd [Pletcher] quite well and always had tremendous respect for him. I would have always liked for him to train for us, but since Todd and Kiaran were such good friends, it was a line that I didn’t want to cross, and Todd had similar feelings.”

Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid al Maktoum’s high-powered global operation and McLaughlin enjoyed a tremendous run together through the years campaigning standouts such as Horse of the Year Invasor (Arg) (Candy Stripes), GI Belmont S. winner Jazil (Seeking the Gold), GI Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile winner Tamarkuz (Speightstown), GI Hill ‘n’ Dale Cigar Mile H. winner Daaher (Awesome Again), GI Donn H. winner Albertus Maximus (Albert the Great), et al.

With McLaughlin exiting the training ranks to take the book of leading rider Luis Saez in April, the Shadwell/Pletcher era was officially underway.

“When Kiaran announced his retirement, Todd was one of the first ones to reach out to me and I jumped at the chance,” Nichols said. “We’re very happy for Kiaran–he’s doing well–and we’re very excited to have Todd as one of our trainers. We’re looking forward to a lot of great things.”

Pletcher added, “Kiaran was always very excited about training for Shadwell and holds the whole team and Sheikh Hamdan in the highest regard. I was fortunate enough to get a positive endorsement from Kiaran and touched base with Rick Nichols when Kiaran decided to pursue another career. It’s a great organization and they have nothing but the highest quality of horses.”

High quality, indeed.

The seven-time Eclipse Award-winning trainer has hit the ground running for his new client, led by the GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf-bound ‘TDN Rising Star’ Mutasaabeq (Into Mischief).

The $425,000 KEENOV graduate, the first foal from Downside Scenario (Scat Daddy), earned his ‘Rising Star’ badge with a flashy debut victory going 5 1/2 furlongs at Saratoga Aug. 8, good for a very strong 84 Beyer Speed Figure.

He had already tipped his hand in the mornings.

“One of his gate works (Click for XBTV video of Mustasaabeq’s July 19 gate breeze) in particular was one of the best I’ve seen from any of our 2-year-olds,” Pletcher said. “We were anticipating a good debut.”

Following a well-beaten third behind the unbeaten division leader Jackie’s Warrior (Maclean’s Music) in the GI Runhappy Hopeful S. Sept. 7, however, Pletcher decided to call an audible.

“We were a little bit frustrated with the Hopeful result,” Pletcher said. “Not that finishing third is bad, but we felt like maybe he wasn’t quite to that level on the dirt. So I said, ‘You know what? He’s out of a Scat Daddy mare who won on the turf. Why don’t we breeze him on the turf and see how that goes?'”

Spoiler alert: it went quite well.

Mutasaabeq shared the bullet for five furlongs over Saratoga’s Oklahoma training turf course with the 3-year-old No Word (Silent Name {Jpn}), who subsequently posted a game runner-up finish in the GI Belmont Derby Invitational S.

“He worked head and head with him,” Pletcher said. “I said, ‘OK, I think we know what to do now.'”

Mutasaabeq handled the surface switch with aplomb and punched his ticket to ‘Future Stars Friday’ in style, slingshotting his way from last to first after missing the break in Keeneland’s GII Dixiana Bourbon S. Oct. 4. He was the 2-1 favorite that day and was piloted by McLaughlin’s aforementioned jockey, Luis Saez.

“I’ve watched [the Bourbon] about 20 times already,” Nichols said with a laugh. “We’re extremely excited. He’s such a nice horse.”

“I was a little worried when he was out the back door early on,” Pletcher said. “He turned in a very impressive turn of foot to really inhale the field in a hurry. He’s come out of it really well and it’s great that he has a win over the course. He’s a gentleman around the barn and is a pleasure to train.”

Mutasaabeq, bred in Kentucky by BlackRidge Stables LLC, returned to the worktab for his Breeders’ Cup preparations with a four-furlong breeze in :48.75 (4/63) over the Belmont training track Thursday.

The regally bred $1.05-million Keeneland September graduate Malathaat (Curlin), meanwhile, also carried the royal blue and white epaulets to a ‘Rising Star’ nod on debut going seven furlongs for Pletcher at Belmont Park Oct. 9.

Favored at 4-5, the 2-year-old filly was ridden early to secure a good spot on the outside in second, gained a narrow advantage as they bunched up rounding the far turn, and responded well to some left-handed encouragement by Hall of Famer Johnny Velazquez in the stretch to kick off her career with a promising victory. A race like the $100,000 Tempted S. going a one-turn mile at Aqueduct Nov. 6 could be a potential landing spot for her next start.

Malathaat’s ultra-talented dam Dreaming of Julia (A.P. Indy), a Stonestreet homebred and Pletcher-trained ‘TDN Rising Star’ herself, registered a career high in Belmont’s GI Frizette S. at two. Her resume also includes a 21 3/4-length victory in the GII Gulfstream Oaks, good for an astronomical 114 Beyer Speed Figure, a runner-up finish in the GI Mother Goose S. and a third-place finish in the GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies. The daughter of MGISW Dream Rush (Wild Rush) was an unlucky fourth in the GI Kentucky Oaks.

This is also the same female family of MGSW Dream Pauline (Tapit) and stakes-winning young sire Atreides (Medaglia d’Oro).

Recent GI Woodward H. winner and ‘TDN Rising Star’ Global Campaign is bred on the same Curlin over A.P. Indy cross as Malathaat.

“I was really excited that we got the opportunity to train her because she was my first-round draft choice of the [2019] Keeneland September Sale,” Pletcher said of Malathaat.

“I loved that filly as a yearling. We put together a group to try to buy her and we were in the hunt, but we didn’t quite get it done. Her mother was a special talent, a very gifted filly. This filly is a slightly bigger and slightly stronger version of her mother. It’s exciting that she was able to break her maiden going seven furlongs and you would certainly anticipate that she’ll get even better stretching out. She’s all class.”

Other Pletcher-trained Shadwell runners to get their picture taken thus far include:

Prairie Wings (f, 3, by Tapit) ($800,000 KEESEP yearling), a Saratoga maiden winner in an off-the-turfer Aug. 27 and grassy Keeneland allowance runner-up Oct. 2; and Ashiham (c, 3, by Tapit) ($800,000 KEESEP yearling), a Saratoga maiden winner going 1 1/8 miles Aug. 21.

The streaking Tatweej (c, 4, by Tapit) ($2.5-million KEESEP yearling) graduated for Shadwell and Pletcher at Gulfstream July 25 and has since added a pair of allowance tallies in South Florida for owner Alshareef Hazzaa Shaker Alabdali while remaining under Pletcher’s shedrow.

Shadwell, a perennial leading buyer at Keeneland September, picked up nine yearlings, led by a $1.6-million daughter of Medaglia d’Oro, for a total of $5.42 million at last month’s sale.

Pletcher currently has 12 horses in training for Shadwell and another six residing at his father J.J. Pletcher’s Payton Training Center in Ocala, Florida. Shadwell has allocated 15 yearlings of 2020, including “some really nice homebred colts,” for Pletcher to train as well.

Shadwell splits its best stock in the U.S. between Pletcher and Chad Brown, per Nichols.

“I’m really fortunate to be able to train for them–it’s really fun to be a part of the team,” Pletcher concluded.

Colt by Freshman Sire Frosted Graduates at Belmont

Creative Cause, Not This Time See Most Dramatic Jumps In Average At Keeneland September Sale

The commercial market's respect for the late leading sire Giant's Causeway was apparent at this year's Keeneland September Yearling Sale, where two of his sons filled out the exacta for the biggest year-to-year jumps in average sale price (10 or more sold each year).

Leading the charge was Airdrie Stud's Creative Cause, whose average jumped 71.94 percent during this year's Keeneland September sale to $20,420 from 35 horses sold. As the broadest yearling auction in North America, both by duration and the scope of offerings, a big swing in performance at the Keeneland September sale can be a strong indicator of public favor toward a particular stallion.

Creative Cause nearly doubled his average sale price with his sixth crop, but he more than doubled the number of horses sold from year to year, with the previous crop featuring 17 yearlings selling at the Keeneland sale for an average of $11,876.

The yearlings of 2020 were conceived in 2018, when Creative Cause's oldest runners were 4-year-olds. At that point, he already had first-crop runner Pavel blazing the trail with a win in the Grade 3 Smarty Jones Stakes and a third against older foes in the G1 Jockey Club Gold Cup Stakes. By the end of the 2018 breeding season, he'd also run fourth in the G1 Dubai World Cup.

Creative Cause's second crop was also doing work to build their sire's fledgling on-track reputation in the eyes of potential breeders, led by My Boy Jack. A stakes winner at two, the colt became a factor on the Kentucky Derby trail after victories in the G3 Sham Stakes and Lexington Stakes. My Boy Jack then became a wiseguy pick for the 2018 Kentucky Derby, where he finished fifth as the betting public's third choice.

Also from her sire's second crop, Significant Form, was a Grade 3 winner as a 2-year-old in 2017, and she ran fourth in that year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile Filles turf.

“This year's crop of yearlings came from a strong, deep group of mares,” said Cormac Breathnach of Airdrie Stud. “He got about 145 mares that year on the back of horses like Pavel and Significant Form, all the headline horses he was represented by. He got the biggest, and probably best, book of mares he's bred. Between his yearlings and the foals of this year, he's got some really outstanding physicals.”

The slate of offerings by Creative Cause at this year's Keeneland September sale was led by Hip 1998, a colt out of the winning Tapit mare Tamboz who sold to Kenny McPeek, agent, for $180,000. Consigned by St George Sales, agent, the colt is a half-brother to Grade 2-placed Battalion Runner, Grade 3-placed Oceanwave, and stakes-placed runners Tiznoble and Late Nite Mischief.

Airdrie Stud also got into the high-priced Creative Cause game, consigning Hip 1707, a filly out of the winning Teofilo mare Catsbury who sold to Deuce Greathouse, agent, for $95,000.

“It's nice to see him get respect, because he's doing very well on the track in terms of getting winners every weekend, and getting some stakes horses, and staying high on the lists with his contemporaries,” Breathnach said. “He's got a lot in the pipeline to sort of have a resurgence.”

Creative Cause was joined at the top of the list by fellow Giant's Causeway heir Not This Time, whose stock has been skyrocketing with the success of his first juveniles in 2020.

The 6-year-old resident of Taylor Made Stallions saw his average sale price at the Keeneland September sale jump 46.41 percent this year to $116,500 from 26 yearlings, hailing from his second crop. His debut crop saw 39 members change hands at last year's Keeneland sale for an average of $79,569.

Not This Time's first crop of runners has been led in practically every sense of the word by Princess Noor, who sold for $1.35 million at this year's Ocala Breeders' Sales Co., Spring Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training, and has gone undefeated in three high-profile starts. After breaking her maiden by a front-running 2 1/2 lengths, Princess Noor won the G1 Del Mar Debutante Stakes by 6 1/2 lengths, and she most recently took the G2 Chandelier Stakes by 8 1/4 lengths, making her status as the favorite for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies all but certain.

Princess Noor's exploits have played a big part in putting Not This Time at the top of the freshman sire list by progeny earnings, but below the surface, the stallion is represented by stakes winner Dirty Dangle and Grade 3-placed Hopeful Princess.

Taylor Made's Duncan Taylor said the early commercial acceptance of Not This Time, paired with the high-level performance of his first runners, has set the stallion up well for long-term success.

“They got such an awesome reception at the 2-year-old sales, even before he started getting winners,” Taylor said. “Then, Princess Noor brought $1.3 million, and I think when a horse shows that people think enough of their offspring that someone would go beyond a million dollars…When you're trying to market a stallion, it's so hard to break through the clutter. You can run ads, but when you say something brings a million, that starts getting people's attention, and then they really start looking at who he is and what he is, and you get people diving in. When you dive in on this horse, you keep finding better stuff.”

The top seller for Not This Time at this year's Keeneland September sale was Hip 66, a colt out of the unraced Ghostzapper mare Belle's Finale who sold to Repole Stables and St. Elias Stable for $450,000. Taylor Made Sales Agency consigned the colt, as agent.

The mantle is still wide open for a formal North American successor to the Giant's Causeway sire line, and both Creative Cause and Not This Time will be in the hunt for that title as more of their runners hit the racetrack and mature into breeding careers. The race became more urgent after Giant's Causeway died in 2018, and it's easy to argue that these two sires have gotten hot at the right time.

“I always thought Giant's Causeway was a little different [son of] Storm Cat,” Taylor said. “He's not quite as compact and one-dimensional-looking. The typical Storm Cat, to me, though he did get further distances, looked more like sprinters. Giant's Causeway was a little leaner of a horse, and Not This Time's the same way. Who knows how far they're going to go – Princess Noor just won at 1 1/16 miles, but they look like two-turn horses. They don't look like just sprinters, and I think that's another reason why people are excited about the sire.”

Another stallion with a big first crop who made a commercial leap during this year's sale was WinStar Farm's Constitution, who has seen his flag planted in the winner's circles of the Belmont Stakes and Travers Stakes thanks to Tiz the Law.

Constitution's Keeneland September average for his third crop rose 44.13 percent to $159,619 from 21 sold this year. His second crop brought an average of $110,743 from 35 sold.

Leading the way for Constitution was Hip 904, a filly out of the unraced Candy Ride mare Candy Fortune who sold to Solis/Litt for $725,000. The filly is a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Hog Creek Hustle and Grade 3-placed stakes winner Majestic Dunhill.

The biggest year-to-year jump in average in terms of dollars was Into Mischief, who firmly established himself as a top-tier commercial sire, with 57 yearlings sold for an average of $445,632 – the second-highest average of the sale behind Medaglia d'Oro at $599,722. The resident of Spendthrift Farm achieved a 30.72 percent increase from last year, when he had 70 yearlings average $340,900.

Xcira Provides Online Bidding Options at Keeneland and OBS

With pandemic-induced travel restrictions and crowd-size limitations nipping at its heels, the Thoroughbred auction scene finally made its debut on the internet this year, first with the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s Spring Sale in June and most recently with the Keeneland September Yearling Sale. The company tasked with helping both OBS and Keeneland offer their buyers the opportunity to bid online was Xcira Global Technologies. Founded by Gary and Nancy Rabenold, the Florida-based company helps facilitate online auctions across the globe in industries as diverse as art, livestock and automobiles.

“We started this bloodstock odyssey earlier this year and every single company we spoke to said, ‘We wouldn’t do it unless there was COVID,'” said Simon Wells, head of sales and marketing for Xcira, which also provides online auction platforms for Tattersalls, Texas Thoroughbred Association, Equine Sales Company of Louisiana, and Iowa Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners Association. “So it was almost like they were put in a corner. And they sort of adopted what most other industries have had for years. We have been doing this simulcasting–or as you would call it, online bidding–for 21 years in automotives.”

Wells continued, “We first started contacting Keeneland, [Vice President, Chief Information Officer] Brad Lovell and [President] Bill Thomason and talking to them about this about nine years ago. And they said, ‘I don’t think our industry is ready for this.’ So we have had the longest courtship.”

OBS was able to hold its March sale on schedule just as the pandemic was shutting down most of the world, but as auctions were canceled and postponed, OBS officials began looking for alternatives.

“We had the March sale as scheduled without online bidding and we had the rescheduled Spring sale in June with it, so it was a very small window where we had to crank it up,” said OBS President Tom Ventura. “Certainly from our end, it was the highest of priorities in terms of trying to give buyers as many options as possible. For the March sale we had already increased the phone bidding, had multiple phones and multiple people to handle the phones. For the next sale, we really wanted to try to have online bidding in place, so we went from zero to 60 in no time. We had our backs up against the wall to ramp this up and to Xcira’s credit, they dedicated the manpower to get us there.”

Recalling the moment when he was convinced Xcira’s online bidding platform would work for OBS, Ventura said, “As we’d been looking at online bidding along the way, the concerns we had were A) Is it secure? and B) Is there any delay? It wouldn’t work if there was any kind of significant delay. What really drove home how there is basically zero delay, I had the Xcira system on my computer screen in my office and I had the OBS sale feed on my TV and the online bidding system was actually a half a second ahead of the sound on my TV screen. It was subtle, but you could hear they weren’t quite synced up.”

Of Xcira’s quick turnaround at OBS, Wells said, “So much in livestock is done on the hand shake and everything is about reputation,” Wells said. “So I think some of the reticence to adopt technology comes from the fact that it’s reputations at stake. Tom and [OBS Director of Sales] Tod [Wojciechowski] have been great people to work with because they were willing to risk that reputation. They were in the closest hole because we turned them around in 30 days. We really had to spin that round quickly and we did say to them, ‘You are going to have a life jacket rather than a boat. And then we will build you a boat in due course.’ Which is what we are doing now for bloodstock. We’ve reached out to all of them now and said, ‘Give us a list of the like-to-haves rather than the must-haves and we are developing the product.”

The sales companies function as trusted intermediaries between buyers and sellers and Xcira’s focus is to provide the auction houses the technology platform to create an additional avenue for sales.

“You still need the auction house’s reputation to broker the deal,” Wells said. “We’ve spoken in the office about what makes it all tick and what is most important and what’s it most like, because bloodstock is new to us. And the closest we’ve seen is Christie’s Art. We do their internet bidding and it’s the reputation of the auction house that that painting is really a Vincent VanGogh and it’s that trust with the auction house. Absolutely it’s the same with bloodstock. There is a trusted broker managing the sale. And I think any system like this is still reliant on that. We are almost like the backroom boys and they are placing their reputations on the line. Keeneland put their reputation in our hands as far as the technology working, but as far as the actual transaction goes, it is still very much the part of the auction house to have that trust in the transaction.”

Michelle Labato, a veteran of on-line car auctions, handled the internet bids at both OBS and Keeneland. Sitting in the bottom row of the press box at Keeneland, Labato kept close watch on both the auctioneers and her computer monitor, which shows her how many people are currently logged onto the site and ready to bid. As the bids rise in-house, Labato updates the asking price manually on her screen. When an online buyer makes a bid, it appears in a large red box on her screen and she raises her hand to have the bid recognized by the bid spotters.

“Michelle started off in automotives, she was a senior clerk for some time,” Wells said. “I knew her when she worked in Orlando in the auto auction. Tod asked if I knew anyone who could clerk for them because they started to realize how quick and how specialized it was and we sort of paired them. She’s followed us everywhere, other than Tattersalls, for most of our sales. She gets on really well with [Keeneland auctioneer] Justin Holmberg as he has done automotive. You’ll hear him say, “C’mon internet’ or ‘You’re out Michelle.’ She almost becomes another bid spotter.”

Online bidding at the 12-day Keeneland September sale attracted a total of 1,857 bids, which resulted in the sale of 126 horses for a total of $12,165,900 to buyers in 17 U.S. states, Japan, United Kingdom, Canada and Spain. The highest price recorded online was the $825,000 paid by Yuji Hasegawa for a colt by Tapit out of GI Breeders’ Cup Distaff winner Stopchargingmaria (Tale of the Cat).

“Online bidding worked as smoothly and was as popular among buyers as we had hoped,” Keeneland’s President Elect Shannon Arvin said at the conclusion of the September sale. “When you try something new, you kind of hold your breath to see how it goes. We are very pleased with our partner, Xcira, and the online auction technology system, as well as the level of participation by buyers.”

Approximately 40% of horses who went through the ring on the final day of the OBS July sale had at least one internet bid, according to Ventura, who said online bidding was just one more option to provide potential buyers.

“I think it just adds another way for people to participate,” Ventura said. “I think the level of comfort for people doing things online has changed over time as people get more and more comfortable. Ten years ago, I was not comfortable doing banking online and now I can’t remember the last time I wrote a check. So different generations may be slower adopting these sort of things–I still don’t really know what Venmo is–but the technology is there, it’s reliable, it’s secure and it gives people options. Especially when we have a long sale. Our 2-year-old sales with extended under-tack shows and then a gap and then sales days, if people want to get their homework done and head back to wherever they are heading, this will give them that opportunity to bid or have their clients bid.”

The Rabenolds founded Xcira over two decades ago in the closet of their son’s nursery room.

“Gary and Nancy are both ex-IBM people,” Wells said. “Their first fax machine was in their son’s nursery in the closet when they first started the company. Gary stayed on at IBM and paid the mortgage and Nancy went off and tamed the automotive world. When we started with cars, we were told by the head of Manheim, the car auction people, that this was a passing fad and it would never catch on, exactly the same attitude that bloodstock has now. It comes full circle. But we have the benefits of all those lessons we learned.”

While many of the concerns are the same, the Thoroughbred auction industry does present unique obstacles.

“Automotives has had it for 21 years and their adoption rate for North America is about 40% of the vehicles go through an online buyer,” Wells said. “However automotive is a commodity item, there are a lot of vehicles that are commodity items and there is a Blue Book guide for pricing, but no one has yet made a Blue Book for Thoroughbreds. So I think that, whilst it’s an essential tool in today’s marketplace, it is just another tool. Horses are like a piece of fine art, so much of it is in that gut feeling and in that look. You stand at the back of it and it walks right and you can’t say why it walks right, but it does. There is still that need because they are not commodities like automotive.”

Wells said the internet purchases at automotive auctions tend to skew to the top and the bottom, with the middle market often requiring more of an on-site presence.

“Of that automotive 40%, they tend to be the two extremes, they tend to be the very expensive, the nearly new factory cars that dealers have, and the very cheap ones,” Wells explained. “Whereas the ones in the middle, where it could be debatable as to the conditions, those are the ones that remain in-person. I think with horses as well, I think a lot of people are coming down, looking at the animal and then going home to bid or having someone there who says, ‘I can look at it for you.'”

A comparison of the online purchases during Keeneland September shows nine on-line purchases during the top-of-the-market Book 1 and a further 16 in Book 2 for gross internet sales of $8,672,000. Seventeen horses sold online for $923,200 during Book 3 and 21 Book 4 horses sold online for $1,423,000. A total of 34 Book 5 horses sold online for a gross of $898,500. During the auction’s Book 6, 29 yearlings sold online for $249,200.

“For the auction house, it’s not just the people who have won the horse, it’s the underbidder who has pushed it up one more bid,” Wells said.

One aspect of the online car auction scene which Wells thinks might be helpful in Thoroughbred industry is a consolidated source of information.

“I think at some point there is a need for the industry to look at how it moves data about,” Wells said. “I think everybody is running their own show and they work in isolation. If you were to look at Autotrader, auto dealers have gotten over the fact that there are other auto dealers out there and they list alongside each other. If I want to search for an F150 in white and gold lariat and I want sat nav on it, I can go straight to it and I can click it and find it. If I want to search for a horse with particular characteristics, I’ve got a lot of phone calls to make.

“There is only one racehorse of a certain type,” he continued. “It is a slightly different industry, so I’m not really comparing apples with apples. There is a bit of apples and pears there because all horses are a unique item, whereas F150s, there are millions pumped out from Ford and there are loads of them about, so I can choose from lots of different ones and I don’t have to worry about the temperament of my F150. You don’t get a cribbing F150. So it is different, but I think there is a point where the industry should come together for the greater good in moving data around.”

As the technology has evolved in car auctions, the need to provide potential buyers with advanced information has also increased.

“In automotive now we are spending so much of the effort on inspections and conditions reporting,” Wells said. “You look at Carvana now, you can have a 360-degree picture of the interior that you can spin around and there is all that imaging. So when you are buying online, you are getting much more information about what you’re buying.”

Now that the Thoroughbred industry has offered its first online bidding opportunities, it is better positioned to face any future challenges presented by the pandemic, according to Wells.

“Who knows when or if the second wave does hit, but our system allows you to go completely virtual,” Wells said. “So you could leave the animal in its paddock and sell it from a distance. Which is what happened in other verticals, like livestock in South Africa. They had hoof and mouth and they weren’t allowed to move animals, so they had a goat sale, believe it or not. The dearest goat was about $15,000 and that was bought by a buyer from Thailand. And the goat never left the field it was in, it was all done remotely, a virtual sale where everybody logged in.”

After purchasing the top three lots online at the Tattersalls August Sale last month, Ted Voute was a satisfied customer of the new technology. Voute told TDN‘s Emma Berry, “Bidding online was very easy and there was no need for me to be there today, having seen the horses yesterday. We had a vet there today to cover eventualities like a horse taking a lame step before going into the ring.”

While it has taken time for the bloodstock industry to adopt internet bidding, Wells said there is no going back now.

“I can quote more than person as saying the genie is out of the bottle now,” he said. “You can’t put it back. It’s like Pandora’s box is open. I don’t think any customers would say they want to step back from it. It was out of necessity that it started, but then it becomes, ‘We would like to have this as an option.'”
