Constitution Colt Gets Keeneland Day 2 Off to Fast Start

After a bonanza first session, bidding resumed at Keeneland September Tuesday afternoon and a colt by Constitution, the second horse through the ring on the day, became the sale's 10th seven-figure yearling when selling for $1.3 million to Richard Knight Bloodstock. The chestnut colt, consigned by Highgate Sales, is out of graded winner Cozze Up Lady (Cozzene) and is a half-brother to Grade I winner Kimari (Munnings). He was bred by the China Horse Club, which purchased Cozze Up Lady for $300,000 at the 2014 Fasig-Tipton November sale.

‘Can’t Miss’ Keeneland September Sale Starts Monday

LEXINGTON, KY- The 79th renewal of the Keeneland September Yearling Sale opens its 12-day run Monday with the first of two Book 1 sessions beginning at 1 p.m. Consignors started showing Book 1 yearlings Friday and an international cast of shoppers were getting second looks at those elite youngsters on a misty Sunday morning in the Bluegrass, while also getting a head start on Book 2 horses who will start selling Wednesday.

“I think the activity is very good, particularly for Book 1,” said Peter O'Callaghan, whose Woods Edge Farm will warm up with  four yearlings during the first two days of the sale before offering 11 head in Book 2. “I think we did 83 all-shows on Friday and we did 116 yesterday, maybe not all-shows, but we had a full day's showing. We are showing the next group already today and we've had quite a busy morning for the Sunday morning up there. I think the signs are good.”

The first three days of showing featured an eclectic mix of buyers from around the world, according to Legacy Bloodstock's Tommy Eastham, who expects momentum to build on from a strong group of Book 1 offerings.

“Traffic has been really encouraging, not just volume-wise, but quality of shows,” Eastham said. “Keeneland has done a good job of bringing every accent in the world here. And I think they've done a really good job of picking out the horses. [Keeneland Vice President of Sales] Tony [Lacy] and [Keeneland Director of Sales Operations] Cormac [Breathnach] have done a really great job of putting some quality horses up front here. It's always been difficult for us in Book 1, if we started the sale with a little bit of a thud, then it takes to Book 2 for everyone to get confident in where they are. But the buyers keep mentioning what a great group of horses is here and I think there is a great deal of excitement.”

Consignors expect to see a continuation of familiar marketplace conditions over the next two weeks at Keeneland, with strong demand at the top and a polarization between the perceived quality offerings and those less-fancied horses.

“I am sure it will be a strong sale, but selective as every sale has been this year and for past years,” said Hill 'n' Dale Sales Agency's John Sikura. “There is plenty of money here and all of the right people. There is great pre-sale activity. They will do their scrutiny and they will land on the horses they like physically and the ones that vet to their satisfaction. Hopefully, we will have several that appeal to the elite buyers.”

Sikura continued, “I think [the polarization] is here to stay. You have a shrinking foal crop combined with a shrinking number of racetracks. So people are going to buy what they like and there probably isn't a buyer for every horse. You are rewarded on the ones that meet the scrutiny of multiple buyers and they make extra and then there are the ones that don't quite make it. There are savvy people who sometimes bid under the crazed market and then there are people who want exactly what they want and those cost more.”

Foreign buyers come to Keeneland this year while facing uncertain economic conditions in Europe and less-than-favorable exchange rates across the globe.

“Every year you are hoping you have a global market and that people from all marketplaces are here,” Sikura said. “You can't change the economic environment in various nations. That's sort of beyond your control. You just make the horses as good as you can make them and bring your best product to sale.”

Sikura added that economic conditions are less likely to impact top-end buyers.

“I think there is a lot of insulation of very wealthy people and in tough times they are still in a position to buy what they like,” he said. “Everything is cyclical to a degree. But I don't think inflation and potential economic slowdown has a lot of impact on our marketplace. A global recession would, but I don't think the vagaries of marketplaces in different countries would make that much difference because in every environment when things are tough for one sector, they are good for another. If you are in the oil and gas business, it's probably been good, but the stock market hasn't been as good, but it was good before. I think there is an ebb and a flow.”

After years in which overseas interests dominated the buying sheets, the domestic buying bench stepped up at the last two September sales to fill the void left by major buyers Godolphin and Shadwell, with partnership groups leading the way. Mike Repole and Vinnie Viola's St. Elias Stables teamed up to buy 43 yearlings at last year's September sale for a leading $16,045,000. They were followed by the SF Bloodstock/Starlight/Madaket partnership which purchased 24 head for $10,590,000. The powerhouse partnership buyers also included the BSW/Crow Colts Group which purchased 20 horses for $6,805,000.

Representatives from all three groups were out in force at the Keeneland barns ahead of Monday's first session.

“This sale has been very successful without Sheikh Mohammed the last couple of years and no Sheikh Hamdan last year,” O'Callaghan said. “The domestic buyers are very strong. I think it's given the high-end domestic buyers more confidence that they can buy these horses now. For years, I think they thought when they were bidding against the Maktoum families they had no chance. Since COVID, the domestic buyers have really stepped in and gotten in early and been great supporters of the sales. And then there are all the new buying groups–they've just been an absolute gift to the game. Whether it's the SF group or the Liz Crow group, Todd [Pletcher] last year, the way they are working it this year, they are working it very hard. All these guys are very committed–as they should be because racing is strong at the moment.”

Book 1 horses have had to deal with a perception problem in recent years with consignors seemingly happier to be a big fish in a Book 2 pond than overshadowed in Book 1. The Keeneland sales team has made a point of countering that image (Keeneland's Premier Book in Every Way).

“Keeneland has done a good job getting more people in early,” O'Callaghan said. “I think that ad they ran highlighting the success of the first 20 hips was a good ad and they need to sell that message. It's important that people can have confidence to bid on the early horses, because year after year, it's where the value is.”

The Keeneland September sale is often considered a bellwether for the marketplace as a whole and the auction comes in the midst of a series of strong yearling sales throughout the country, giving consignors the optimism that demand for horses will remain beyond the auction's opening books.

“The market has been really strong,” said Eastham. “I think it's been fair. I think horses are bringing what they are worth. We always worry about what happens when we go past these select horses but, just me as a consignor, the Iowa sale was up almost twice as much, the New Mexico sale and the Texas sale were up. I think that mid-market horse, we are going to be fine there. I think there is still going to be enthusiasm for that market.”

In an effort to create a festive atmosphere to the pavilion on sales days, Keeneland added live music, as well as passed hors d'oeuvres and cocktails a year ago. Those amenities, plus facility upgrades, will return this year.

“The success of September Sale graduates combined with the availability of quality yearlings at all price levels make the September Sale a can't-miss event for horsemen from around the world,” Lacy said. “This year, we are excited to share our latest capital improvements and facilities around the grounds–from renovated barns to the Saddling Paddock Chalet here for the Breeders' Cup World Championships–and we are continuing to elevate the September sale atmosphere with fun touches and elements that enhance the experience.”

The Keeneland September sale opens with Book 1 sessions on Monday and Tuesday beginning at 1 p.m., while Book 2 sessions on Wednesday and Thursday begin at 11 a.m. Following a dark day Friday, the auction resumes Saturday and continues through Sept. 24 with sessions beginning daily at 10 a.m.

Mountmellick and Hunter Valley an Irish Partnership Forged in the Bluegrass

Three years ago David Fennelly of Mountmellick Farm partnered with Adrian Regan and Fergus Galvin of Hunter Valley Farm to purchase a trio of seven-figure mares with the intention of forming a high-end boutique commercial broodmare band. The partnership, which has already had success in the sales ring and on the racetrack, sends the first foal of its most expensive acquisition through the ring during Monday's first session of the Keeneland September Yearling Sale. Consigned by Hunter Valley, hip 36 is a dark bay filly by Curlin out of multiple Grade I winner Separationofpowers (Candy Ride {Arg}), a mare the team purchased for $2.1 million at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton November sale.

For Fennelly, who was born in the U.S. and grew up in Ireland, the breeding operation forms a full circle back to his childhood love of racing.

“If you want to be in the horse business, Lexington, Kentucky is the horse capital of the world,” Fennelly said of his return to the United States as a 21-year-old in 1985. “I was coming to muck out stalls like 180 other people. That's how it started. That's how I ended up in the horse capital of the world mucking out stalls at Spendthrift.”

Fennelly would spend seven years at Spendthrift before an opportunity came along that took him away from the Bluegrass.

“One of our clients was exporting coal down the river system from Kentucky, West Virginia, Illinois, and he offered me a job,” Fennelly recalled. “I thought, you know what, I am not too sure if this is a childhood dream or a real job, so I am going to try this other path.”

Fennelly moved south to New Orleans where he learned the ins and outs of exporting coal. From there, he would go on to found shipping and cargo services businesses, including Associated Terminals.

But, as an avid polo player, horses remained a part of his life and eventually, business success paved the way for his return to Kentucky.

“We started playing polo in New Orleans and then in Lexington and I thought, 'Let's get 20 acres up here and have a little spot,” Fennelly said. “We ended up with Mountmellick Farm, which is 600 acres. And then we thought, 'Let's get some mares.'

“I never thought I would own a piece of the Bluegrass and that I would breed a horse that would sell at Keeneland. I sold lots of horses with Spendthrift at Keeneland, Saratoga, Fasig-Tipton–not me personally, me the caretaker of–and so it was kind of a full circle dream. I am fortunate enough to be in a position to think, 'You know, what if we breed that mare by that stallion to that stallion?'”

Asked about his master plan when he began his breeding operation almost a decade ago, Fennelly said, “There was no plan at all. Nothing. Dudley's, a beautiful dinner, everybody who is anybody hangs out at Dudley's and I thought well, 'I can do this.' So I did it.”

Mountmellick is home to about seven broodmares in partnership with Terry Gabriel of Pelican State Thoroughbreds.

“Terry Gabriel advises me and keeps me focused,” Fennelly said, before adding with a laugh, “And he keeps me with my hands in my pockets.”

Fennelly met Regan and Galvin through trainer Andrew McKeever and made an instant connection.

“Andrew McKeever has been training horses for me for 25 years–I always had one or two,” Fennelly said. “He introduced me to the guys and they are off-the-charts fantastic horsemen. They know their business. And we just kind of hit it off. They said, 'Hey, David, look at this mare. Would you be interested in owning a piece?' And look at this one and that one. And we ended up with a few mares together.”

The team made its first seven-figure purchase with Diva Delite (Repent), the dam of champion Midnight Bisou (Midnight Lute), who sold for $1.2 million while in foal to Justify at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton November sale. The mare's Justify colt sold for $775,000 at last year's Keeneland September sale and, now named Verifying, was a first-out winner on the Travers undercard at Saratoga Aug. 27.

“Look at that moment in time,” Fennelly said of that result. “We bred a winner at Saratoga on Travers Day? Come on. That was wonderful.”

Just a few hips after purchasing Diva Delite, the team came back to purchase Separationofpowers for $2.1 million.

“Good Lord, is that what she cost? Why did you have to tell me that?” Fennelly said with a chuckle when asked about the purchase.

Still, Separationofpowers, who won the 2017 GI Frizette S. and 2018 GI Test S., was a standout at the sale, according to Fennelly.

“This mare is incredible,” Fennelly said. “She was a few dollars short of winning a million dollars, you placed her and asked her and she performed every time. When she walked around Fasig-Tipton in that back arena, it was like Good Lord, look at this girl here. So we bought her. Maybe the Irish get carried away.”

Separationofpowers visited Curlin in 2020 and the resulting foal, the mare's first, sells next week at Keeneland.

“She is pretty special,” Fennelly said of the yearling. “Everybody has got a special horse. You'll go from barn to barn and there will be many. But she is absolutely a beautiful specimen; out of a champion mare by Curlin–who needs to say any more about Curlin.”

Completing the Hunter Valley/Mountmellick trio of million-dollar mares is Nereid (Rock Hard Ten), who was purchased for $1.25 million at Keeneland November.

“The business plan with Hunter Valley is we are going to produce very, very nice horses,” Fennelly said. “We are not afraid to race, but the primary goal is to produce and sell wonderful, beautiful horses.”

Even the foals bred by Mountmellick end up at Hunter Valley.

“Anything we sell, we sell with Hunter Valley,” Fennelly said. “To me, they are second to none. They are absolutely second to none. They present a beautiful horse, ready for presentation to be sold. And they have an eye for buying the best.”

Fennelly, who said he began his breeding operation with no plan, is content to continue to let the business find its own way.

“At this stage, I want to stay boutique,” he said. “We have an absolutely stunningly beautiful farm. We operate and live part of our time in the Bluegrass in the midst of some of the most famous farms in the world. I am down the road from my college degree at Spendthrift. And so, just like how I got in, I try not to over think it.”

Asked to rate his experience as a breeder so far, Fennelly said, “I would say we've done quite well. We all love the highs. And we all know that it's a difficult business to be in at times, but that photograph in the winner's circle of a horse that you bred, or the moment in time when the hammer goes down and the digital clock is saying a particular financial number, it's fantastic. You can't get a better high.”

The Keeneland September sale begins with two Book 1 sessions next Monday and Tuesday beginning at 1 p.m. Book 2 sessions on Wednesday and Thursday begin at 11 a.m. Following a dark day Friday, the auction continues through Sept. 24 with sessions beginning daily at 10 a.m.

Summer Wind to Retain Yearling Half-Brother to Flightline

Following Flightline (Tapit)'s jaw-dropping victory in the GI Pacific Classic at Del Mar Saturday, breeder Jane Lyon of Summer Wind Farm has decided to withdraw the star colt's half-brother by Curlin from next week's Keeneland September Yearling Sale. The yearling, who is named Eagles Flight, had been catalogued as hip 243 with the Lane's End consignment.

“I had a feeling when Flightline did what he did [in the Pacific Classic] that it was going to be pretty hard for her to part with him,” said Lane's End's Bill Farish, confirming the news first reported in Blood-Horse. “It's disappointing not to be able to sell him, but we totally understand the decision to keep him.”

Farish continued, “[Lyon]'s been on the fence for a long time about selling him. She loves all of her horses, but every year there are a few that really grab her. And this one always has. It's tough because she loves to sell them well, too, but this is one that is just hard to part with.”

Flightline is out of multiple Grade I placed Feathered (Indian Charlie), who was purchased by Summer Wind for $2.35 million at the 2016 Keeneland November sale. The mare produced a filly by Into Mischief this year and was bred back to Tapit.

Feathered's 3-year-old colt by Pioneerof the Nile, Voron, was exported to Russia after selling for $100,000 at the 2020 Fasig-Tipton October sale, and her 2-year-old colt by Tapit, Olivier, RNA'd for $390,000 at last year's Fasig-Tipton Saratoga sale. Olivier worked five furlongs in 1:02.20 (17/27) at Keeneland last Friday.

Flightline, who races for a partnership which includes Summer Wind, as well as Hronis Racing, Siena Farm, West Point Thoroughbreds and Woodford Racing, sold for $1 million at the 2019 Saratoga sale.

Asked to compare the yearling to Flightline, Farish said, “They are both outstanding colts. This colt has a lot more Curlin in him. He is a stronger-made–not that Flightline's not–but Flightline is longer and this is more of a Curlin type. But he is really an outstanding-looking individual.”
