Friday’s Racing Insights: Miss Temple City’s First To Race Hits The Turf

1st-DMR, $82K, Msw, 2yo, f, 5fT, 6:00 p.m.
PERSIA (War Front), making her juvenile debut for breeder Ramona Bass and her son Perry, is the first offspring to race out of Miss Temple City (Temple City), who posted two of her three career Grade I wins against the boys. Purchased by Steve Young for $2.5 million at Fasig-Tipton November in 2017, Miss Temple City is a full-sister to GSW Pricedtoperfection, herself a $775,000 FTKNOV grad. Trained by Richard Mandella, Persia will have the services of Hector Berrios.

Also entered is SF Racing homebred Gerwig (Kitten's Joy), who counts GI Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint hero Bobby's Kitten and MGSW Camelot Kitten as full-brothers. SF paid $350,000 for dam Celestial Woods (Forestry) in foal to Candy Ride (Arg) at FTKNOV in 2018  The chestnut filly will be ridden by Ramon Vasquez for trainer Tim Yakteen. TJCIS PPs

Robert and Lawana Low import Irish Gent (Ire) (Ten Sovereigns {Ire}) heads to the post in Saratoga's lidlifter, who they purchased at the Goffs September Yearling Sale for $479,645 after he sold as weanling for $147,155 at Goffs the previous November. The dark bay is the first to race for dam Indigo Butterfly (Fr) (Le Harve {Ire}), a half-sister to English SW & GSP So Will I (GB) (Inchinor {GB}) and to Group 2 winner Sand Vixen (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), the dam of GIII Saratoga Oaks and G2 Cape Verdi S. heroine With the Moonlight (Ire) (Frankel {GB}). Tornado Road (Quality Road), a $1.15-million Keeneland September buy last year for BC Stables, debuts for D. Wayne Lukas with Tyler Gafflione in the irons. The dark bay colt's dam has produced two winners from three other foals to race, including GIII Dogwood S. victress and 'TDN Rising Star' Carribean Caper (Speightstown). Tornado Road's extended female family includes Horse of the Year A.P. Indy (Seatlle Slew) and champion older horse Lemon Drop Kid (Kingmambo). TJCIS PPs

Back out at Del Mar, another first to the races homebred will be making her debut in Amerman Racing's Smell the Coffee (Arrogate). Produced by GI Longines Just a Game S. heroine Coffee Clique (Medaglia d'Oro), who is a half-sister to MGSW Admission Office (Point of Entry), the David Hofmans trainee will be ridden by Ramon Vazquez. Four Supplemented To Keeneland’s Book 1 September Yearling Sale

Keeneland will supplement four horses to Book 1 of the September Yearling Sale, which begins Monday, Sept. 11, the organization said in a release Thursday.

Opening day of the sale will include a daughter of American Pharoah out of Pushkinskaya (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) (hip 190), consigned by Highgate Sales, agent, who is a full sister to European Champion 2-year-old filly Maybe (Ire).

Four Star Sales, agent, consigns a colt by Uncle Mo (hip 191) and a half-brother to GISP Conquest Panthera (Kitten's Joy) and MGSW Happy Like a Fool (Distorted Humor).

The first supplement on Day 2 is a colt by Gun Runner out of Special Event (hip 391), consigned by Gainesway, agent. He is from the family of Champion older mare and MGISW Queena (Mr. Prospector).

Highgate Sales, agent, also consigns a filly by American Pharoah (hip 392) out of GISP Stopshoppingmaria (More Than Ready).

Amoss Filly Fights It Out, Wins Spa Maiden

The one thing trainer Tom Amoss knew about his starter in Sunday's sixth race at Saratoga was that if she got into a fight in the stretch she would be able to handle it. That proved to be the case in the 6 1/2-furlong race for 2-year-old fillies. Ridden by Tyler Gaffalione, Alys Beach (Omaha Beach) scored a game win, out-battling the Todd Pletcher-trained Life Talk (Gun Runner) to win by a head.

“On the track, she showed her competitiveness in practice,” Amoss said. “She needed that today.”

Amoss has had a lot of success with horses who didn't necessarily break the bank at the sales and Alys Beach is no exception. He bought her for $120,000 at Keeneland September for owner Greg Tramontin.

“She was a very good looking yearling that I picked out for Greg,” Amoss said.

Alys Beach had her first recorded workout on May 4 at Keeneland. After two workouts in Saratoga, including a five-furlong work on July 19 in 1:02 1/5, Gaffalione knew what he had.

“I got familiar with her in her last work,” he said. “She went really well that day. We sat outside a horse and she kicked to the wire full of energy and galloped out strong. She showed she has a great mind.”

Alys Beach was fourth early on and was three wide. In upper stretch, Gaffalione made the decision to dart to the rail. She got past 2-1 favorite Mugen (Into Mischief), took a narrow lead and then had to dig down to hold off  Life Talk.

“She put it all together today,” Gaffalione said. “When I dove back into the rail she didn't hesitate at all. She did everything I asked her to.”

It wasn't the trip Amoss had hoped for.

“I was recalling that 10 minutes earlier, I was telling Tyler, `I think the rail is the wrong place to be; try to go around,'” Amoss said. “That's what I was thinking.”

Alys Beach, overlooked at the windows, paid $18.60 and completed the distance in 1:18.58.

Mugen is a $1.2 million yearling purchase at Fasig-Tipton Saratoga. She held a one-length lead at the eighth-pole but couldn't fight off Alys Beach or Life Talk. She lost by 3 1/4 lengths.

Amoss is off to an excellent start at Saratoga. He's 3-for-5 at the meet and has sent out three straight winners.

“I'm loving riding for Tom,” Gaffalione said. “He's been so good to me. Tom has a great team behind him and they do a really good job.”

City of Light’s Shootoutthelights Dazzles as a New Rising Star

Minor ailments held her back from a juvenile campaign, but Shootoutthelights (City of Light) showed she was worth the wait as she lit up the clock with an electrifying cruising speed, and dominated her rivals to become her sire's first 'TDN Rising Star' as a brilliant cap to Gulfstream's Championship meet.

The race was almost over from the jump as the filly rocketed out of the stalls as the 6-5 favorite and out-kicked Queen Karima for the lead. With an opening split posting at a wicked :20.89 and a half in :43.79, Irad Ortiz Jr. said 'go' in the stretch and the pair disappeared from the field, hitting the wire 3 1/2 lengths in front as :55.77 went up for the final time. Queen Karima was a clear second best on the day.

With Shootoutthelights riding two bullet works into this contest–and certainly no secret to the betting public, either–conditioner Wesley Ward had glowing praise for his newest 'Rising Star' and everyone around her:

“Gene Recio did a great job with this filly in Ocala,” he replied after the race. “I am very thankful for Breeze Easy's Mike Hall for letting me train [Shootoutthelights]. She was my pick of all the yearlings they had two years ago.”

He also added: “Minor issues held her back [from a juvenile season] but the owners are very patient.”

Out of Very One S.-placed Donna Getyourgun, the victress was a $525,000 yearling at 2021 KEESEP and is only the third foal in her dam's first six seasons as a broodmare. Her half-sister Mizzen Beau (Mizzen Mast), SW, $205,559 was the flag bearer to the races, a $100,000 OBSAPR grad in her day, and picked up her black-type at Woodbine before retiring to motherhood herself, delivering a colt by Hard Spun this year. Their dam delivered unplaced Shake It Out West (Speightster) in 2018 and was barren a season before having Shootoutthelights in 2020. Donna Getyourgun is also responsible for two other fillies: a 2-year-old by Catholic Boy who changed hands for $19,000 last year at KEESEP to Winner Circle Racing Stable and a yearling by McKinzie. She is due to Silver State for 2023.

Second dam Cryptoqueen claims quite a busy line beneath her with nine winners, including MGSW Clearly A Queen (Lucky North), who claims two stakes runners and is the granddam of MGSW Engage (Into Mischief) and MGSP Commute (Hold Me Back). This is also the extended female family of MGSP British Royalty (English Channel); GSW Savedbythelight (Saint Ballado); and SW Reformer Rally (Dynaformer).
