This Mar. 18 foal failed to find a new home when bidding stalled at $15,000 at last year's OBS October Sale, but he became the second-priciest 2-year-old from the first crop of this full-brother to American Pharoah when hammering to Hideyuki Mori for $155,000 at this year's OBS March Sale (21 sold/25 ring) after working in :10 flat. 6th-KOK, ¥13,720,000 ($94k), Newcomers, 2yo, 1700m
JASPER ROBUSTO (c, 2, Khozan–Prize Informant, by Marciano) was purchased by Blaz Perez Stable for $27,000 at OBSOCT last fall, but blossomed over the next several months and was sold to Mori on behalf of the 'Jasper' owner Kazuo Kato for $265,000 at OBSMAR, the best of 25 juveniles (33 ring) by the sire during this season's breeze-ups (:9 4/5). The bay is out of a stakes-winning half-sister to Wise Answer (Wised Up), who nearly swept the Florida Stallion S. series in 2007, capped by a 10-length romp in the In Reality S. at Calder. PIKARI (f, 2, Twirling Candy–Laudation, by Congrats) is the second foal to the races for her dam, a stakes winner at two for Jerry Durant and Steve Asmussen and later acquired by Peter O'Callaghan's Woods Edge Farm for $150,000 with this foal in utero at Keeneland November in 2020. Produced by a half-sister to this year's G3 UAE Oaks heroine Mimi Kakushi (City of Light) and MSW Moment Is Right (Medaglia d'Oro), this March foal fetched $265,000 from Ciaran Dunne's Red Wings Enterprises at last year's Keeneland September Sale and lit up the tote at OBSMAR to the tune of $900,000 after working a furlong in :9 4/5. 5th-SAP, ¥13,720,000 ($94k), Newcomers, 2yo, 2000mT
KINGS CROWN (JPN) (c, 2, Yoshida {Jpn}–Tulips Galore, by Giant's Causeway) is the first Japanese starter for his WinStar-based stallion and was acquired in utero for $45,000 at the 2020 Keeneland November Sale. The unplaced dam is a half-sister to New York-bred stakes winner Gambling Girl (Dialed In), runner-up in this year's GI Kentucky Oaks, third in the GI CCA Oaks and entered for Saturday's GI Alabama S. at Saratoga. The colt's third dam Eventail (Lear Fan), a half-sister to Take Charge Lady (Dehere), is responsible for Heart's Cry's dual Japanese listed winner Strong Souther (Jpn) as well as GSW Straight Story (Giant's Causeway). Fasig-Tipton, Keeneland Announce Fixed Monday-Tuesday November Dates

Starting in 2024, the Kentucky November breeding stock sales dates will be fixed on the Monday and Tuesday after the Breeders' Cup, despite the location of the event, according to a joint press release from Fasig-Tipton and Keeneland, who said that the goal was providing “stability and the strongest market possible.”

This year, the Fasig-Tipton November auction will be held Tuesday, Nov. 7, and Keeneland November will open Wednesday, Nov. 8.

Beginning in November 2024, the Fasig-Tipton November Sale will take place on the Monday following the Breeders' Cup, while the November Breeding Stock Sale at Keeneland will begin on Tuesday. The Monday/Tuesday schedule will remain in place regardless of where the Breeders' Cup is staged. The 2024 World Championships will take place Friday and Saturday, Nov. 1 and 2, 2024, at Del Mar. Accordingly, the Fasig-Tipton November Sale will commence Monday, Nov. 4 and Keeneland November will open Tuesday, Nov. 5.

In the past few years, the sales dates have varied based on the location of the Breeders' Cup and the interruption caused by the Covid pandemic.

“Keeneland and Fasig-Tipton share a commitment to do what is best for the health and vibrancy of our industry,” Keeneland President and CEO Shannon Arvin said. “This schedule not only provides clarity, but capitalizes on the momentum from Breeders' Cup, maximizes the opportunity for international buyers to participate and creates positive energy surrounding both sales. We've listened to the thoughtful feedback from our clients and members of the Consignors and Commercial Breeders Association and worked to determine an outcome that is beneficial for everyone.”

“Both sales companies share a vision and commitment to serve the marketplace in the most effective manner,” Fasig-Tipton President and CEO Boyd Browning Jr. said. “This announcement provides all industry participants a defined and consistent schedule for the November sales.”

Walker Hancock, the president of the Consignors and Breeders Association, said, “I want to thank the sales companies for getting together and figuring out this path forward that benefits the whole industry. It's great to see them working together. It's a solution that benefits all.”

Elite Sales co-owner Liz Crow, a member of the board of the CBA and who frequently sells mares at the two sales who have competed in the Breeders' Cup just days before, said, “When the Breeders' Cup is in Kentucky, I think Monday-Tuesday is great. When it's in California, I would prefer Tuesday-Wednesday. I found that when buyers have more time they can gather more information and do their homework, and it's less stressful on everyone, including our equine athletes, which are the most important factor here. Flying these mares home and then having them sell right off the plane is harsh and not very safe for them. I have had a few instances of horses colicking, and it's hard to get them rehydrated after a hard race like the Breeders' Cup. The buyers are rushed through the process when you have the Breeders' Cup in California. I am very happy that we're not doing Sunday any more. And I am happy the sales companies worked together and were able to figure something out this year before the entry deadline.”

Keeneland Sales To Sponsor Major Filly Stakes From Coast To Coast

Keeneland Sales has become the presenting sponsor of the GI Alabama S. at Saratoga Race Course, and Keeneland November will present the GII Jessamine S. on opening day of the 2023 Fall Meet, the organization said in a release Thursday. This comes on the heels of last week's news that the sales division would lend its name to the GIII Sorrento S. at Del Mar.

“Keeneland is excited to team with NYRA and Del Mar in sponsoring these prestigious summer stakes, and for Keeneland November to sponsor our Jessamine Stakes in the fall,” Keeneland President and CEO Shannon Arvin said. “This initiative supports our mission to better the industry and aligns our globally important September Yearling Sale and November Breeding Stock Sale with these world-class race tracks.”

A late January foal, the chestnut is maternal grandson of Grade I-placed Grace Anatomy (Aldebaran), whose stakes-placed daughter Retro (Giant's Causeway) accounted for recent Churchill maiden winner American Retro (American Pharoah). Switch In Time is out of dual Grade I winner Switch (Quiet American), who is also responsible for the Irish Group 3-placed Kiss You Later (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). Christophe Lemaire has the call. BREGAGH ROAD (JPN) (c, 3, Quality Road–Photo Call {Ire}, by Galileo {Ire}) is the first Japanese-foaled produce for his dam, who first changed hands for $3 million at Keeneland November in 2015 after winning that year's GI Rodeo Drive S. and would pad her resume when taking out the GI First Lady S. the following season. Photo Call was purchased by Katsumi Yoshida for $2.7 million with this colt in utero at KEENOV in 2019, and is also responsible for a Maurice (Jpn) colt that sold for nearly $1.2 million as a foal in 2021.
