Notable Runners By US Sires in Japan: May 1, 2021

In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Here are the horses of interest for this weekend running at Hanshin and Tokyo Racecourses, including a filly from the first Southern Hemisphere crop of American Pharoah. Group 1 action resumes this weekend at Hanshin with Sunday's running of the G1 Tenno Sho (Spring) over two miles, a full field that includes the progressive Diastima (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}), a 4-year-old son of three-time Grade I winner Sweet Reason (Street Sense):

ROSE PHARAOH (AUS) (f, 2, American Pharoah–Roz {GB}, by Teofilo {Ire}) is the second Australian-bred foal to make the races to from her dam, a listed winner and runner-up in the G1 Shadwell Fillies' Mile while under the care of Ed Dunlop in 2012 and later purchased privately after being RNAd for 550k gns in foal to Oasis Dream (GB) at the 2014 Tattersalls December Mares sale. Roz would have appealed to an Australian buyer, as her half-brother Hartnell (GB) (Authorized {Ire}) was an eight-time winner for Godolphin down under, including four Group 1 events at distances from 1400-2400 meters while also finishing third in a G1 Melbourne Cup. Rose Pharaoh was an A$150,000 buyback at the 2020 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale. B-Go Bloodstock (NSW)

2nd-TOK, ¥9,680,000 ($89k), Maiden, 3yo, 1400m
VICTORIA NOTE (JPN) (f, 2, Pioneerof the Nile–Her Emmynency, by Successful Appeal) was acquired in utero for $1.5m at the 2017 Keeneland November Sale (after being led out unsold at $1.425m at Fasig-Tipton November in 2016) and is the first foal out of her dam, who belied odds of 19-1 to best Miss Temple City (Temple City) in the 2015 GI Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup over the Keeneland turf course. This filly's second dam, Chic Dancer (Joyeux Danseur), also did her thing on the grass, winning the 2006 GIII Modest H. at Arlington. Victoria Note debuts in the colors of Teruya Yoshida. 3rd-TOK, ¥9,680,000 ($89k), Maiden, 3yo, 2100m
NIGHT FROLIC (c, 3, Into Mischief–Frolic's Revenge, by Vindication), a $300K KEESEP acquisition, is out of a five-time stakes-winning dam who is also responsible for SW American Frolic (Blame) and SP Mc Awesome (Super Saver). The colt's four-time black-type winning second dam Stormy Frolic (Summer Squall) was one of two stakes winners for Grade III winner Lindsay Frolic (Mt. Livermore), who also bred GSW & MGISP Super Frolic (Pine Bluff). Night Frolic gets the services of Christophe Lemaire this weekend. Frolic's Revenge was acquired by Woodford Thoroughbreds for $275k at KEENOV in 2015 with the colt that would become Mc Awesome in utero. B-Woodford Thoroughbreds (KY)

In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners (and, in today's case, by a US-based shuttle stallion) entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Here are the horses of interest for this weekend running at Niigata and Hanshin Racecourse. The second of those venues hosts the first of this year's fillies' Classics, the G1 Oka Sho (Japanese 1000 Guineas), featuring champion Sodashi (Jpn) (King Kamehameha {Jpn}):

SUZUKA PHAROAH (AUS) (c, 2, American Pharoah–Berrimilla {Aus} by Fastnet Rock {Aus}) spots his Northern Hemisphere-bred opponents a significant amount of maturity, but, in broad terms, Australian imports typically hold their own at this level. An A$120K purchase out of the 2020 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale, the Sept. 18 foal is a maternal grandson of the stakes-placed Purrfection (NZ) (Tale of the Cat), resulting in Storm Cat inbreeding that has proved successful with this successful young sire. The colt's third dam is responsible for G1 New Zealand Oaks winner and G1 Australian Oaks runner-up Boundless (NZ) (Van Nistelrooy). B-Dr D J O'Brien (Qld)

6th-NII, ¥9,680,000 ($89k), Maiden, 3yo, 1800mT
HIROSHIGE SAPPHIRE (JPN) (f, 3, Medaglia d'Oro–Al's Gal, by English Channel) is the first produce for her dam, a $35K Mike Maker claim turned Grade I winner of the 2016 E.P. Taylor S. (see below). Sold for $800K at Fasig-Tipton November a few weeks later, she remained in training into early 2017, but was retired, was covered by this sire and fetched $950K at Keeneland November that fall. GALLANT MANNER (c, 3, More Than Ready–River Cruise, by Not For Love) debuts in the Godolphin blue and was acquired by Harry Sweeney’s Paca Paca Farm for $320K at Keeneland November in 2018, the most expensive of eight of this legendary sire’s foals reported as sold that year. A full-brother to SW More Than a Cruise and a half to SP Oriental Cruise (Orientate), the February foal is out of a dual stakes-winning half-sister to GSW Secret River (Secret Odds). 7th-CKO, ¥13,830,000 ($133k), Allowance, 3yo, 1800m
SKY NILE (f, 3, Pioneerof the Nile–Joyful Victory, by Tapit) looks to take her record to two wins from two starts, having broken her maiden by 3 1/2 lengths at Nakayama Dec. 6 (video, gate 12). A half-sister to SP Jennifer’s Dream (Medaglia d’Oro) and SP Saqqara King (American Pharoah), the gray is the last US-bred produce for her Grade I-winning dam, who was acquired privately from Aaron and Marie Jones in 2017. The mare’s foal of 2019, an American-bred, but Japanese-foaled colt by Kitten’s Joy, fetched ¥105m ($982,202) from Danox Co. at last year’s JRHA Select Yearling Sale. B-Teruya Yoshida

PARADISUM (c, 3, Medaglia d’Oro-Taste of Heaven {Aus}, by Encosta de Lago {Aus}) tries winners for the first time after graduating impressively over this distance at Kyoto Oct. 31 (see below, gate 1). The colt’s dam, an A$1.5m ($1.389m) purchase by James Harron Bloodstock out of the 2014 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale, is a full-brother to G1SW sire Manhattan Rain (Aus) and SW & G1SP Echoes of Heaven (Aus); and is a half-brother to the legendary Redoute’s Choice (Aus) (Danehill), G1SW Platinum Scissors (Aus) and to GSW Sliding Cube (Aus) (Rock of Gibraltar {Ire}), the dam of ‘TDN Rising Star’ and successful young sire Rubick (Aus) (Encosta de Lago {Aus}). Paradisum, a half-brother to Canadian Grade III winner and $625K KEESEP grad Heavenly Curlin (Curlin), was bought back on a bid of $235K as a KEENOV weanling and fetched $400K at KEESEP in 2019. Yoshizawa, who campaigns 2019 Triple Crown participant Master Fencer (Jpn) (Just A Way {Jpn}), has been represented by four Tapit winners in Japan, including the listed-placed American Seed. WELL SNIPER (f, 3, Violence–Down the Well {Ire}, by Mujadil) is the latest to make the races for her dam, whose three winners from as many to hit the track include SW Aqua Frio (Uncle Mo) and Karak (Karakontie {Jpn}), the latter of which broke her maiden at first asking sprinting on turf at Belmont before winning the 2019 Tyro S. on the grass and the 2020 Cincinnati Trophy on the Polytrack.. SUI (f, 4, Candy Ride {Arg}–Eltimaas, by Ghostzapper), the half-sister to champion and MGISW Drefong (Gio Ponti), doubled her win tally when taking out an Oct. 3 allowance over track and trip first off a six-month absence before finishing down the field in her last visit to the post Oct. 25. A $300K KEESEP yearling turned $675K OBS March breezer, Sui is out of a half-sister to champion Action This Day (Kris S.). B-Machmer Hall, Carrie & Craig Brogden (KY)

10th-NKY, Junior Cup-Listed, ¥38,370,000 ($372k), 3yo, 1600mT
ASCALON (c, 3, Speightstown–Coco As In Chanel, by Awesome Again) validated 4-5 favoritism when breaking his maiden at first asking going 1200 meters at Sapporo Aug. 22 (see below, gate 6), but was well-beaten in his first try against winners three weeks later and resumes here. The stakes-winning Coco As In Chanel was purchased by SF Bloodstock and Newgate Farm for $150K in foal to Violence at KEENOV in 2018 and produced a filly by Newgate’s Russian Revolution (Aus) in 2020.
