Notable US-Bred and -Sired Runners in Japan: Jan. 29-30, 2022

In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Here are the horses of interest for this weekend running at Chukyo and Tokyo Racecourses:

4th-CKO, ¥11,400,000 ($99k), Newcomers, 3yo, 1400m
CUTE VILLAIN (f, 3, Arrogate–She Be Wild, by Offlee Wild) is the latest foal out of the Eclipse Award-winning juvenile filly of 2009 and cost Katsumi Yoshida $550K at last year's Fasig-Tipton Florida sale after breezing an eighth of a mile in :10 flat (see below). The Mar. 31 foal becomes the ninth Japanese starter for her late sire, six of which have already tasted success at the races. That number includes wide-margin debut winner Jasper Great, who is out of a mare by Offlee Wild's sire, Wild Again. B-Nancy Mazzoni (KY)

4th-TOK, ¥14,250,000 ($124k), Allowance, 3yo, 1600m
FOOLISH HOBBY (f, 3, Arrogate–Flatter Up, by Flatter) is another of those half-dozen Arrogate winners in Japan, having led home an exacta for the sire when besting next-out graduate Shailene on 1800-meter debut at Hanshin Nov. 27 (, SC 7). The first foal from a Grade III-placed mare, Foolish Hobby fetched $260K at the 2020 Fasig-Tipton Selected Yearlings Showcase and matured into a $450K FTFMAR breezer (:21 1/5). Foolish Hobby is from the female family of GISW and young sire Midnight Storm (Pioneerof the Nile). Three Chimneys acquired Flatter Up for $300K with this foal in utero at KEENOV in 2018. 6th-TOK, ¥11,400,000 ($99k), Newcomers, 3yo, 1600mT
KANARRA CREEK (c, 3, Kitten's Joy–Wilson's Creek, by Bernardini), a $160K KEESEP acquisition on behalf of Godolphin by Paca Paca Farm, is out of a daughter of Darley-bred River Street (GB) (Machiavellian), a full-sister to the late and influential Street Cry (Ire) and to the stakes-placed dam of European champion 2-year-old colt Shamardal (Giant's Causeway). The colt's dam Wilson's Creek was acquired by William Harrigan/Miacomet Farm for $80K in foal to Midshipman at KEENOV in 2018. B-William B Harrigan & Mike Pietrangelo (KY)

MOZU CLEOPATRA (JPN) (f, 3, American Pharoah–Audubon Park, by Candy Ride {Arg}), acquired in utero for $130K at KEENOV in 2018, was purchased by the Capital Systems ownership group for $383,526 as a yearling at the 2020 JRHA Select Sales. The filly's winning dam is a daughter of Zealous Cat (Storm Cat), whose produce include GSW Tapicat (Tapit), GSP Enthusiasm (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) and the dam of Japanese Group 3-placed Dieu du Vin (Jpn) (Declaration of War). Progeny of American-Sourced Mares Set to Shine at Gold Coast

The Magic Millions Gold Coast Sale, one of Australia's two premier yearling sales, was to kick off Tuesday (Australian time) in Queensland, with the cream of the crop of those foals born in 2020. Buyers will relish the opportunity to get not only into some of Australia's pre-eminent female families, but also into some American bloodlines that have been sourced by a variety of bloodstock professionals at auction houses in this country. In today's TDN, we look at horses selling in the first two sessions. Horses being offered Thursday and Friday will appear in Thursday's TDN.

Lot 141, c, Justify–Inglorious, by Hennessy
Consigned by Kia Ora Stud, Scone, NSW

The sixth foal for Canada's Champion 3-year-old filly, who captured the 2011 Queen's Plate S. as well as the Woodbine Oaks three weeks earlier, has the benefit of a Triple Crown winner on the top of his pedigree as well as bearing a striking resemblance to him. From Justify's first Southern Hemisphere crop, the chestnut is a half to graded stakes-placed Miss Canada (Aus) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}) as well as two other winners. The Ontario-bred Inglorious was a $1.35 million purchase from the 2013 Fasig-Tipton November sale by Kia Ora Stud, and her offspring have been well-received among buyers in her adoptive country: her first foal England (Aus) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) sold for over US$680,000 as an Inglis Easter yearling in 2017. The full-sibling to that one, Off Width (Aus), hammered for over $400,000 at the same sale a year later, and Miss Canada recently passed through the 2021 Magic Millions Broodmare sale, dropping the hammer for over $580,000 the way of Suman Hedge Bloodstock.

Lot 271, c, Shalaa (Ire)–Miss Match (Arg), by Indygo Shiner
Consigned by Arrowfield Stud (as Agent)

The flashy seventh foal from GISW Miss Match with go through the ring as a half-brother to three winners from three to race, including Bandol (Aus) (Snitzel {Aus}), who also has a colt by Shalaa entered in the sale. The half-sister sold for over $500,000 in 2017 at the Inglis Easter Yearling sale. The dam is a half to 'TDN Rising Star' and GI Acorn S.-winning Carina Mia (Malibu Moon) and to a Group 1 stakes producer in Argentina. This is the female family of the late Lord Nelson. Miss Match was purchased by Freyer Bloodstock for $500,000 at the 2010 Keeneland November sale and was exported to Australia in 2012.

Lot 335, c, Brave Smash (Jpn)–Olympic Medal, by Medaglia d'Oro
Consigned by Edinburgh Park, Wingham, NSW

Olympic Medal was consigned as a weanling by Hill n' Dale back in 2016 at the Keeneland November sale, going the way of Julian Blaxland's Blue Sky Bloodstock/Aquis Farm for $525,000 and she was immediately exported to Australia. A half to GSW Heavenly Curlin (Curlin), the young broodmare hails from the family of Champion Australian miler turned champion sire, Redoute's Choice (Aus) (Danehill), former 'TDN Rising Star' and sire Rubick (Aus) (Encosta de Lago {Aus}) and G1SWs Platinum Scissors (Aus) (Danehill) and Manhattan Rain (Aus) (Encosta de Lago {Aus}). This colt is from the first crop of his sire, a stakes winner and Group 3-placed at home and later winner in Australia of the G1 Manikato S. and G1 Futurity S. in Melbourne.

THE KING (JPN) (c, 3, Curlin–Alluring Star, by Exchange Rate) is the first foal from his dam, second to Caledonia Road (Quality Road) in the 2017 GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies and purchased by Katsumi Yoshida with this colt in utero for $925K at the 2018 Keeneland November Sale. A Jan. 28 foal, The King was offered at the 2019 JRHA Select Sale and repaid a fair bit of the investment, hammering for ¥82 million ($754,400), while the now 2-year-old half-sister by Heart's Cry (Jpn) made ¥40 million ($372,820) at the same event in 2020. The King was a useful fifth on his career debut at this venue back in September. B-Northern Racing

11th-CKO, Shinzan Kinen-G3, ¥76.8m ($664k), 3yo, 1600mT
MOZU GOLD BARREL (f, 3, Optimizer–Sweeter Still {Ire}, by Rock of Gibraltar {Ire}), a $1,500 in utero purchase at KEENOV in 2018, ran to the money in her debut to score by a measured half-length at long odds-on going 1400 meters over this course Dec. 19 (see below, SC 1). The $190K KEESEP acquisition is a half-sister to dual Group 1 winner Kameko (Kitten's Joy) and opts for this over Monday's sex-restricted G3 Fairy S. (see below). B-Timothy Lesley Thompson (KY)

Neither US-bred or -sired, MODICA (AUS) (f, 2, American Pharoah–More Than Real, by More Than Ready) has plenty of appeal to an American audience. The early September foal, who spots her Northern Hemisphere rivals a fair bit of maturity, is the latest produce out of Bobby Flay's 2010 GII Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf heroine, who was acquired by Australian bloodstock agent James Bester for $675,000 at the 2011 Fasig-Tipton November sale. All five of the mare's previous starters are winners, including SW Miss Debutante (Aus) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}). Modica, an A$260,000 ($201,089) purchase out of last year's Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, is a maternal granddaughter of MSW Miss Seffens (Dehere), whose daughter Miss Always Ready (More Than Ready) produced GI BC Juvenile Turf hero Structor (Palace Malice) and GSP 'TDN Rising Star' Always Carina (Malibu Moon). 11th-NKY, Fairy S.-G3, ¥70.6m ($611k), 3yo, f, 1600mT
SPEED GLAMOUR (f, 3, Into Mischief–Island Escape, by Petionville) failed to run a poor race in four appearances at two and earned a crack at this level with a narrow graduation going this trip at Chukyo Dec. 5 (see below, SC 14). A half-sister to MGSW Tricky Escape (Hat Trick {Jpn}), the February-foaled bay was bought back on a bid of $250K at Keeneland September in 2020 but blossomed into a $500K purchase at last year's OBS March Sale. In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. The first weekend of racing for the new year takes place at Chukyo and Nakayama, featuring a pair of Group 3 tests over a mile for newly turned 3-year-olds and each featuring one American-bred. MASCHIETTA (f, 3, Into Mischief–Star Billing, by Dynaformer) is the second foal to make the races for her dam, upset winner of the 2011 GI Matriarch S. for owner/breeder George Krikorian and subsequently purchased by Greg Goodman's Mt. Brilliant Farm for $2.3 million in foal to Giant's Causeway at Keeneland November in 2013. Also from the same female family as MGISW Stellar Jayne (Wild Rush) and Krikorian's MGISW Starrer (Dynaformer), Maschietta cost $180K at KEESEP in 2020. B-Mt Brilliant Broodmares II LLC (KY)

7th-CKO, ¥14,250,000 ($123k), Allowance, 3yo, 1800m
JU TARO (c, 3, Arrogate–Bodacious Babe, by Mineshaft) made an enormous impression in his Nov. 13 debut at Hanshin, bounding clear through the Hanshin stretch to break his maiden on the bridle by a dozen lengths (see below, gate 9). The colt's dam, runner-up in the 2017 GIII Sugar Swirl S., was among the first mares covered by Arrogate in 2018 and was hammered down to Juddmonte subsidiary Breffni Farm for $350K at KEENOV later that year. Bodacious Babe is a half-sister to GISW Sippican Harbor (Orb). B-Breffni Farm (KY)

9th-NKY, ¥19,530,000 ($169k), Allowance, 3yo, 1800m
Like Ju Taro, JASPER GREAT (c, 3, Arrogate–Shop Again, by Wild Again) provided his late sire with a wide-margin maiden winner, graduating by 10 lengths at Hanshin Oct. 9 (see below, gate 2). The $200K Fasig-Tipton Selected Yearling Showcase graduate was part of the Breeders' Cup team sent over by trainer Hideyuki Mori, but he never factored after a slow start and finished better than 14 lengths behind Corniche (Quality Road) with a fair bit of pari-mutuel support. A half-brother to GISW Power Broker (Pulpit) and SW Fierce Boots (Tiznow), Jasper Great is out of a stakes-winning half-sister to GISW Miss Shop (Deputy Minister). B-Jamm Ltd (KY)
