Saturday BC Runners and Their Siblings and Dams Entered in KEENOV

In Friday's TDN, Brian DiDonato provided a list of weanling siblings and dams of Breeders' Cup Friday contenders entered in the Keeneland November Sale. Today, Christie DeBernardis followed up with Saturday Breeders' Cup contenders, their dams and younger siblings who are set to sell at that marquee auction. As Brian said, there is no update like a Breeders' Cup update!

Hip 103 – GI Breeders' Cup F/M Sprint contender Edgeway (Competitive Edge) will head straight from Del Mar to Lexington, where she will be offered in Book 1 of KEENOV. A $275,000 OBSAPR purchase by David Ingordo, the Hronis Racing colorbearer won two of four starts last year and was second in the GIII Dogwood S. Kicking off this season with a pair of wins, including the Carousel S. Apr. 10 at Oaklawn, the John Sadler trainee checked in fourth in the July 5 GII Great Lady M S. and won this venue's GIII Rancho Bernardo H. last out Aug. 20. Edgeway faces just four rivals Saturday, but one is a champion, one is a MGISW and one is a speedy Grade I-winning sophomore on the rise. Consigned by Lane's End, the 4-year-old filly is out of SW Magical Solution (Stormin Fever), who is a half-sister to GISW The Lumber Guy (Grand Slam).

Hip 172 – Book 1 also includes another Breeders' Cup runner in GI Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint contender Charmaine's Mia (The Factor). The bay kicked off her 5-year-old season with a trio of victories in the Jan. 9 GIII Las Cienegas S., Feb. 20 GII Buena Vista S. and Apr. 3 GII Royal Heroine S. She was off the board in her last three starts, most recently finishing eighth against males in the GII Eddie D S. Oct. 1. Privately acquired at the end of last season, Charmaine's Mia was campaigned by Agave Racing Stable, Medallion Racing and Rockin Robin Racing Stables with trainer Phil D'Amato. The daughter of SW Charming Vixen (Bernstein) is part of the Taylor Made consignment.

Hip 175 – Selling just five hips after Charmaine's Mia is the unraced Achalaya (Bellamy Road), who is the dam of GI FanDuel Breeders' Cup Mile entrant Casa Creed (Jimmy Creed). Out of MGSW Wild Heart Dancing (Farma Way), the 9-year-old mare is a half to stakes-placed Unbridled's Heart (Unbridled's Song) and Leopard Rock (Speightstown). A $4,000 FTKFEB purchase in 2015, Achalaya's first foal was Casa Creed, a $105,000 KEESEP buy turned GI Jaipur S. winner and now Breeders' Cup contender for Bill Mott. She summoned $8,500 from Stonestreet carrying her second foal by Liaison at the 2017 OBSWIN sale. The dark bay was sent back through the same auction the following year carrying her third foal by Stonestreet's Jess's Dream, who is now Grade III winner Chess's Dream, and brought $15,000 form Trackside Farm. Achalaya RNA'd for $195,000 in foal to Distorted Humor at the 2019 KEENOV sale. The resulting foal was a colt and she had a colt by Omaha Beach this year. Achalaya is offered by Gainesway in foal to Horse of the Year Authentic.

Hip 176 – Achalaya's weanling colt by Omaha Beach, Casa Creed's youngest half-sibling, follows his dam into the ring Wednesday.

Hip 3519 – On the second-to-last day of the sale, which is the third day of Book 5, buyers will have the chance to buy the full-sister to Breeders' Cup F/M Sprint contender Proud Emma (Include). Texas breeders Eric and Randi Moreau-Sipiere purchased their unraced dam Debutante Dreamer (Proud Citizen) for just $2,500 at the 2017 KEENOV sale. Proud Emma won the GIII Bayakoa S. in December and is winless in four starts this year, but finished second to Edgeway in the Rancho Bernardo. She enters the World Championships off a fourth in the GIII Chillingworth S. Oct. 3. The dark bay weanling filly is part of the Ballysax Bloodstock consignment.

Jackie’s Warrior is the Gift That Keeps on Giving for His Breeders

John and Jennie Williams' J & J Stables sold Jackie's Warrior (Maclean's Music) for just $95,000 at Keeneland September. While that price proved to be the bargain of a lifetime for buyer Kirk Robison, the speedy colt has been the gift that keeps on giving for his breeders. The Williamses hope that continues as Jackie's Warrior enters the GI Breeders' Cup Sprint Saturday as the morning-line favorite and his 2-year-old half-sister Lenni Girl (Candy Ride {Arg}) sells during Book 1 of Keeneland November Wednesday.

The Williamses acquired Jackie's Warrior's dam Unicorn Girl (A.P. Five Hundred) in her second season on the racetrack through trainer Ben Perkins. She was a hard-knocking claiming and allowance filly running in the tri-state area with 19 wins from 54 starts and $483,508 in earnings.

“I got her with Ben Perkins early on,” John Williams said. “She was just a blue-collar horse. We ran her hard and she loved to run. She was in the money 34 times. She got claimed a few times, but we decided to claim her back and make her a broodmare. She just had the heart. She never quit. She won all those races the hard way. She had a fight in her. We decided to take a chance on her and see if she would make a broodmare and she turned out to be a pretty great one with Jackie's Warrior.”

Jackie's Warrior was Unicorn Girl's third foal and was actually named by his breeders prior to his sale at Keeneland September and his new owner kept the sentimental name.

“We were planning on racing Jackie's Warrior and named him after my wife's sister Jackie, who was fighting brain cancer,” Williams said. “Then we were downsizing the stable, so we ended up selling him. We were taking some chips off the table. Obviously we had no idea he would go on to become a champion, which it looks like he will. His namesake Jackie is in remission and cancer free and we are all catching planes right now to see him run [at Del Mar].”

Jackie's Warrior opened his account with four straight wins last year, including the GII Saratoga Special S., GI Runhappy Hopeful S. and GI Champagne S. He suffered his first loss when fourth in the GI TVG Breeders' Cup Juvenile last November at Keeneland.

The Williamses decided to strike while the iron is hot and supplemented Unicorn Girl and her 2020 American Pharoah colt to last year's Keeneland November Sale. Unicorn Girl summoned $850,000 from Arthur Hoyeau and her colt brought $600,000 from Coolmore's M.V. Magnier.

Jackie's Warrior has proven to be a one-turn wonder this year, taking the GIII Pat Day Mile May 1, GII Amsterdam S. Aug. 1, GI H. Allen Jerkens Memorial S. Aug. 28 and GII Gallant Bob S. Sept. 25. He also finished a close second in the GI Woody Stephens S. June 5, cementing him as the to choice in his division of the World Championships.

After another sensational season from Jackie's Warrior with a possible championships on the line, the Williamses figured they'd try their luck at Keeneland again this year, supplementing Jackie's Warrior's unraced 2-year-old half-sister Lenni Girl (Hip 224B) to the November sale.

“We've got a fair amount of fillies, which is a little bit unusual for us,” Williams said. “We are just trying to rebalance the stable a little bit and figured we would see where the market is. Jackie's Warrior is obviously a special colt, so we will see what happens with Lenni Girl. She is named after my granddaughter Lennon. The family names seem to be working out pretty well.”

The Keeneland November Sale gets underway Wednesday with a single Book 1 session beginning at 1 p.m.

Keeneland Catalogues 254 Horses of Racing Age for November Sale

A total of 254 head have been catalogued for the horses of racing age section of the upcoming Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale. The single session will be held Nov. 19–the final day of the auction. The catalogue is now available online at www.keeneland.com.

The November sale begins Nov. 10. The Nov. 19 session will start at 10 a.m. with 148 cataloged head of breeding stock and will continue with the horses of racing age. Keeneland will continue to accept supplements to the horses of racing age section through the beginning days of the November sale.

“We've been pleased with how well the horses of racing age section of the November Sale has been received,” Keeneland Vice President of Sales Tony Lacy said. “The timing of the sale is extremely well suited to the racing calendar, coming at the end of the fall racing season as the transition to winter racing is happening and stables are moving to new locations. At this time, people have a lot of opportunity to reassess their stables to best suit where they will race over the winter.”

A print catalogue of horses of racing age with Equibase past performances will be available on the Keeneland grounds by Nov. 5.

The format of the horses of racing age sale will be similar to Keeneland's 2021 April Horses of Racing Age Sale, with live auctioneers at Keeneland. Horses may be presented for sale both physically here and at off-site locations. Internet and telephone bidding will be available.

Keeneland to Offer HRA Session During November Sale

Keeneland will offer a horses-of-racing-age section at its 2021 November Breeding Stock Sale by creating a separate, single-day session to be held on the final day of the auction. A selection of breeding stock will be offered early in this final session, followed by the full group of racehorses cataloged to the sale.

“We are excited about this refreshed take on the racehorse segment, and we feel this change will provide a nice bookend to what we anticipate to be a lively market for the November Sale,” said Keeneland Vice President of Sales Tony Lacy.

The deadline to enter the horses-of-racing-age session is extended to Oct. 1. For the horses-of-racing-age section as well as Book 1 of the November Sale, Keeneland will continue to accept supplemental entries until the sale. This year, the online catalog for this session will denote the current location of each racehorse, giving sellers the opportunity to view the horses prior to their arrival on the sales grounds.

The horses-of-racing-age sale format will be similar to Keeneland's 2021 April Sale, with live auctioneers at Keeneland and with horses presented for sale both physically both in Lexington and off-site locations. Internet and telephone bidding options will be available for buyers who want to participate remotely.

“The timing of the sale–after the fall racing season and before horses ship to major winter destinations–is ideal for the trade of horses of racing age,” Keeneland Director of Sales Operations Cormac Breathnach said. “The later entry deadline and ability to supplement entries gives sellers more flexibility in identifying those horses they want to sell, thereby creating a vibrant catalog and marketplace.”

Among notable race horse graduates from the November sale, 2020 GI Kentucky Oaks winner Shedaresthedevil, a supplement in 2019, who sold for $280,000. She also won this season's GI La Troienne S. and Del Mar's GI Clement L. Hirsch S.
