Con Te Partiro a Unique Offering at Keeneland November

When SF Bloodstock and Newgate Farm purchased Con Te Partiro (Scat Daddy–Temple Street, by Street Cry {Ire}) for $575,000 at the 2018 Fasig-Tipton November sale, the team was already impressed with her accomplishments, but fast forward two years and it will be an even more imposing mare who goes through the ring during the first session of the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale Nov. 9 in Lexington.

Out of the Grade I placed Temple Street and a half-sister to multiple graded placed Donworth (Tiznow), Con Te Partiro was purchased by bloodstock agent Gatewood Bell for $130,000 at the 2015 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. Campaigned by the Hat Creek Racing partnership, she opened her career with a ‘TDN Rising Star’-worthy victory at Keeneland for trainer Wesley Ward in 2016. Two starts later, she won the Bolton Landing S. at Saratoga and concluded her juvenile campaign with a runner-up effort against the boys in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint S. The following year, she joined Ward’s Royal Ascot contingent and came away with a win in the Sandringham H.

She was winless in six starts in 2018 before going through the sales ring at Fasig-Tipton, but had done enough to make the SF team’s short list that November.

“At the time, she was a stakes winner on two continents, a winner on dirt and turf, and by Scat Daddy–those attributes definitely put her on our list, but on top of that she is a beautiful mare and all class which was evident at the sale,” SF Bloodstock’s Tom Ryan said of the mare’s appeal in 2018.

Despite her winless 2018 season, Ryan said the plan was always to send the then 4-year-old racing in Australia.

“The plan was dual-pronged,” Ryan explained. “We felt, given her obvious talent as a racehorse on the turf, that she would suit Australia and could be very competitive there and then ultimately, being by Scat Daddy, from a lovely female family, that she would be an exceptional broodmare prospect.”

Transferred to Australia and the barn of trainers Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, Con Te Partiro found immediate success Down Under, winning the G3 Dark Jewel Classic at Scone in May. Off the board in her next three outings and with the Australian breeding season looming, the decision was made to retire the mare, who had now won stakes on three continents. But the retirement was short-lived.

“Honestly, it was breeding season in the Southern Hemisphere and she was a highly accomplished mare–a Group 3 winner in Australia, and a stakes winner in Europe and the U.S. with tons of appeal,” Ryan said of the decision to retire the mare. “It’s hard to pass up on a breeding season in that scenario, so we decided to go ahead and retire her. When she didn’t take on the first cover there was a lot of discussion–firstly, she was a maiden, so we didn’t want to stretch into a late cover and secondly, she was so talented. Thankfully we decided to put her back in training.”

Returned to training, Con Te Partiro would have her best season of racing in 2020, winning both the G1 Coolmore Classic S. at Rosehill and the G1 Coolmore Legacy S. at Randwick.

“It was outstanding,” Ryan said of Con Te Partiro’s season. “She surpassed all previous accolades picking up two Group 1s at two of Australia’s premier racetracks, Randwick and Rosehill. It was a credit to [Newgate Farm’s] Henry Field and to Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott–they had the belief in the mare and it paid off handsomely.”

In early September, it was announced Con Te Partiro would be returned to the United States for a tilt at the GI Breeders’ Cup F/M Turf before going through the sales ring at the Keeneland November sale two days later. But the 6-year-old suffered a knee injury later that month scuppering plans for an appearance at Keeneland championship weekend.

“It was absolutely disappointing to miss the Breeders’ Cup,” Ryan said. “A mare of that caliber would have been very competitive and we would have loved to end her journey there, especially given her exceptional juvenile performance against the boys at the 2016 Breeders’ Cup.”

While her Breeders’ Cup start was canceled, Con Te Partiro will still be keeping her engagement at the November sale down the hill from the racetrack.

“She arrived back to the U.S. in early October and is in the very capable hands of Neal Clarke and Conor Doyle at Atlas Farm,” Ryan said. “She looks superb, we are very proud to offer her at the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale.”

Of the decision to offer a mare with clearly international appeal at Keeneland, Ryan said, “It was a hard decision for sure–a mare like that is always going to be hard to give up, but we have to be true to our business and we are sellers in this case. In terms of location, I think we were spoiled for choice in that we could have offered her anywhere, but the international presence and broad buyer bench at Keeneland appealed to us. She is, after all, a U.S.-bred mare and there is something special about bringing her home.”

Ryan said buyers will find plenty to like about the well-traveled mare.

“I think she’s one of very few mares that really has it all,” he said. “She is cosmopolitan in every sense of the word; she was at home all over the world and took everything thrown at her with class and brilliance. A black-type winner on three continents, excelling on turf and dirt, wins from 4 1/2 furlongs to a mile, not to mention a beautiful physical, from an active female family that has also produced top sire Into Mischief, and by prolific sire Scat Daddy.”

Consigned by Bedouin Bloodstock, Con Te Partiro is catalogued as hip 217. (Click for Thorostride video)

The Keeneland November sale opens Nov. 9 with a single-session Book 1 beginning at noon. The sale continues through Nov. 18 with sessions beginning daily at 10 a.m.

Saying ‘Grace’ In the Raven Run

A competitive group of 10 sophomore fillies line up in Saturday’s GII Lexus Raven Run S. at Keeneland. Among the expected favorites for the seven-furlong test is Whitham Thoroughbreds’ Four Graces (Majesticperfection). Trained by Ian Wilkes, the homebred has won four of five starts at the Raven Run distance, including Churchill’s GIII Dogwood S. in June followed by the GIII Beaumont S. over the local Beard Course July 10. Given some time off following that effort, she speed-loving filly weakened late to be second behind Sconsin (Include) in the Sept. 4 GII Eight Belles S. and most recently posted a bullet five-furlong move at Churchill in :59.20 at Oct. 8. Julien Leparoux, who has been in the saddle for all five on-the-board finishes, gets the call.

Also likely to join Four Graces on the front end early is Ciaglia Racing, Highland Yard, River Oak Farm and Dominic Savides’s Venetian Harbor (Munnings). A runaway winner of the GII Las Virgenes S. at Santa Anita in February, the Colts Neck Stables-bred filly finished behind Swiss Skydiver (Daredevil) in the May 1 GIII Fantasy S. and played the bridesmaid again, this time behind Speech (Mr Speaker) in the July 11 GI Central Bank Ashland S. at Keeneland. In her most recent trip to the post, she found the talented Gamine (Into Mischief) seven lengths too tough in Saratoga’s GI Test S. Aug. 8.

“We are just trying to win a race; that’s the first thing,” said trainer Richard Baltas. “If she runs well and bounces out of the race OK, we will eye the [GI] Breeders’ Cup [Filly and Mare Sprint].”

Manny Franco has the mount on Venetian Harbor and will break from post position five.

Looking to regain some of her earlier form is Slam Dunk Racing, Doug Branham and Legacy Ranch’s Tonalist’s Shape (Tonalist), who began her career with five consecutive victories in one-turn races for trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. The chestnut took six of seven starts in South Florida from September through May, including this winter’s GIII Forward Gal S. followed by the GII Davona Dale S. Off the board in the Mar. 28 GII Gulfstream Park Oaks, she bounced back to win the May 15 Hollywood Wildcat S. before finishing fourth in the nine-furlong GI Coaching Club American Oaks at Saratoga July 18. Most recently, Tonalist’s Shape was a troubled fifth in the GIII Charles Town Oaks Aug. 28.

“[The CT Oaks] was two turns and she did have trouble in that race,” Joseph said, referring to Tonalist’s Shape being checked approaching the sixteenth pole.”

He added, “There are no plans for her beyond this race. I am just curious to see how she would do back around one turn and hoping she will come back to her [good] form.”

Since the Charles Town Oaks, Tonalist’s Shape has worked twice at Gulfstream–a best-of-78 half-mile in :47.03 Sept. 27 and a best-of-seven 5/8ths in 1:00.62 Oct. 1.

“The two weeks between works was by design to keep her fresh,” Joseph explained.

The 3-year-old has been entered as a racing or broodmare prospect in Keeneland’s upcoming November Breeding Stock Sale and is catalogued as hip 155 in Book 1.

Unicorn Girl, Dam Of Grade 1 Winner Jackie’s Warrior, Supplemented to Keeneland November Sale

Keeneland announced Sunday that Unicorn Girl, dam of undefeated two-time Grade 1 winner and leading TVG Breeders' Cup Juvenile Presented by Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance candidate Jackie's Warrior, and her weanling colt by American Pharoah have been supplemented to the November Breeding Stock Sale, to be held Nov. 9-18.

Unicorn Girl, who is in foal to leading sire Into Mischief, and her weanling son both are consigned by Beau Lane Bloodstock, agent, in the premier Book 1 on opening day.

Catalog pages for the two horses will be released later this week.

In Saturday's Grade 1 Champagne Stakes at Belmont, Jackie's Warrior dominated his rivals with a front-running 5 1/2-length victory. The effort solidified the colt's status as a favorite in the Nov. 6 Breeders' Cup Juvenile at Keeneland and set the graduate of Keeneland's 2019 September Yearling Sale on course for an Eclipse Award as division champion.

“It was a very impressive victory for Jackie's Warrior in the Champagne, and Unicorn Girl in foal to Into Mischief on one cover and carrying a colt will be well received at Keeneland November,” said Carlo Vaccarezza, who owns the mare and weanling with John Williams. “Also selling the weanling half-brother to Jackie's Warrior by American Pharoah will show what she's capable of moving forward. John and I are extremely excited for this opportunity.”

The Champagne continued Jackie's Warrior's roll this year. He won his June 19 career debut by 2 1/2 lengths at Churchill Downs and next took the Aug. 7 G2 Saratoga Special Presented by Miller Light by three lengths. On Sept. 7, Jackie's Warrior captured the G1 Runhappy Hopeful Stakes at Saratoga by 2 1/4 lengths in stakes-record time.

Unicorn Girl, by the A.P. Indy stallion A. P. Five Hundred, is in foal to the powerhouse Into Mischief, whose stud fee recently climbed to $225,000 for 2021. His recent headliners include Kentucky Derby hero Authentic and Test Stakes winner Gamine. Into Mischief was the leading sire by gross sales at the recent Keeneland September Yearling Sale, where 19 of his sons and daughters commanded $500,000 or more. Five sold for $1 million or more, including the $1.9 million sale-topping filly.

“There is no telling what Unicorn Girl can do with a foal by Into Mischief,” Beau Lane said. “She is a powerhouse. She tried her heart out every time she raced. She's a quality mare who was an overachiever, and she passes that on to her babies. They have the same attitude. She is the kind that can give you that special horse.”

Unicorn Girl has a pedigree page loaded with quality. Out of stakes winner Horah for Bailey, she is a half-sister to eight winners, including stakes winner Bernie the Maestro, who earned $694,317, and a pair of stakes horses who banked nearly $200,000 each.

On the race track, Unicorn Girl was competitive, classy and sound. Racing on the East Coast, she won 19 races and earned $483,508 in 54 races.

“Jackie's Warrior proved his star power with his dominating performance in the Champagne, and we look forward to seeing him at Keeneland for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile,” Keeneland President-Elect and Interim Head of Sales Shannon Arvin said. “Keeneland is especially excited to offer his dam, Unicorn Girl, who is in foal to the popular stallion Into Mischief, and his weanling half-brother in the November Sale.”
