Keeneland Catalogs 254 Horses Of Racing Age For November Sale

Keeneland has cataloged 254 horses of racing age for a new single, separate session of this year's November Breeding Stock Sale that will take place Nov. 19 – the final day of the auction – immediately following the selection of breeding stock. The catalog of horses of racing age in the November Sale is now online at Keeneland.com.

The November Sale begins Wednesday, Nov. 10. The Nov. 19 session will start at 10 a.m. ET with 148 cataloged head of breeding stock and will continue with the horses of racing age.

Keeneland will continue to accept supplements to the horses of racing age section through the beginning days of the November Sale.

“We've been pleased with how well the horses of racing age section of the November Sale has been received,” Keeneland Vice President of Sales Tony Lacy said. “The timing of the sale is extremely well suited to the racing calendar, coming at the end of the fall racing season as the transition to winter racing is happening and stables are moving to new locations. At this time, people have a lot of opportunity to reassess their stables to best suit where they will race over the winter.”

The online horses of racing age catalog includes pedigrees, Daily Racing Form and Equibase past performances, race videos and Ragozin and Thoro-Graph figures. Consignors will be able to upload photographs and walking videos.

A print catalog of horses of racing age with Equibase past performances will be available on the Keeneland grounds by Friday, Nov. 5.

The format of the horses of racing age sale will be similar to Keeneland's 2021 April Horses of Racing Age Sale, with live auctioneers at Keeneland. Horses may be presented for sale both physically here and at off-site locations. Internet and telephone bidding will be available.

Keeneland November Sale To Feature Draft Of Mares From Gary And Mary West

Keeneland has announced that the 2021 November Breeding Stock Sale, from Nov. 10-19, will mark the start of an annual reduction of broodmares from prominent owners and breeders Gary and Mary West during the auction.

Paramount Sales will serve as agent for the consignment, which this year will catalog 31 broodmares and broodmare prospects with broodmares in foal to Hard Spun, Union Rags and The Factor, as well as to the Wests' champions Game Winner, Maximum Security and West Coast and Grade 3 winner and Grade 1-placed American Freedom.

As the Wests' colts and their Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner New Year's Day were retired to stud, the couple acquired a large number of mares specifically to breed to them.

“We just can't keep them all,” Ben Glass, the Wests' Racing Manager, said about the mares. “It's amazing how quickly we accumulated broodmares. We're up to 100, and we only try to have 50-60. You just have to move those mares down the line. It's a tough decision. For all we know, we're selling the dam of another Grade 1 winner.”

The mares cataloged as part of the Wests' annual reduction represent a diversity of bloodlines, providing breeders with a variety of options for future matings. Included among the sires of their mares are prominent stallions and/or top broodmare sires Candy Ride (ARG), Curlin, Distorted Humor, Giant's Causeway, Into Mischief, Macho Uno, Medaglia d'Oro, Mineshaft, Quality Road, Smart Strike, Speightstown, Storm Cat, Street Cry (IRE) and Uncle Mo.

The Wests have been longtime patrons of Keeneland sales.

They purchased Maximum Security's sire, New Year's Day, at Keeneland's 2012 September Yearling Sale. They purchased the champion's dam, Lil Indy, in foal to Pioneerof the Nile at the 2014 January Horses of All Ages Sale and resold her carrying a full sister to Maximum Security at the 2018 November Sale.

The Wests also acquired American Freedom, Game Winner and West Coast at the September Sale, along with Dream Lady, who produced their G1 Central Bank Ashland dead-heat winner Room Service.

Glass said the choice of the November Sale as the venue for the Wests' annual reduction of broodmares stemmed from their working relationship with Keeneland and the sales company's broad international buying base.

“We have a good working relationship with Keeneland,” Glass said. “They have always done a good job for us. There is a buyer there for every mare.”

While each mare cataloged to this year's November Sale has a lot to offer, Paramount's Pat Costello said several have attributes that will attract enhanced attention from buyers:

Sweet Sweet Annie (Hip 684), a 6-year-old mare by Curlin produced from multiple stakes winner Song for Annie and in foal to West Coast, is a half-sister to multiple stakes winner Successful Song.
Applaud (Hip 751), a 3-year-old daughter of Medaglia d'Oro also is in foal to West Coast.
Media Circus (Hip 948), a 3-year-old by Mineshaft, descends from the female family of Grade 1 winner and sire Tapizar.

“Sweet Sweet Annie is a fine mare with good size and is from a hell of a family,” Costello said. “Applaud is a lovely individual from a real deep family that goes back to Hold That Tiger and Editor's Note. Media Circus is also another nice mare, and she is from the family of Tapizar.”

Costello reiterated that the Wests are trying to trim their numbers with the reduction.

“They can't keep them all.” Costello said. “They have a tremendous broodmare band and have fillies they race coming off the track and adding to it.”

“The Wests are passionate Thoroughbred owners and breeders, who have been very loyal patrons of Keeneland and have realized some of their greatest triumphs in racing thanks to horses they acquired here,” Keeneland Vice President of Sales Tony Lacy said. “We are grateful for the opportunity to annually offer mares from such a successful operation as an added attraction of the November Sale.”

Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale Catalog Now Available Online

Keeneland's catalog of 3,594 horses in the breeding stock and weanling portion of its 78th November Breeding Stock Sale, to be held Nov. 10-19, is now online.

The catalog includes 2,159 broodmares and broodmare prospects, 1,432 weanlings and three stallions or stallion prospects for this significant auction that attracts participation of leading Thoroughbred owners and breeders across the U.S. and around the world.

Print catalogs will be mailed around Oct. 15.

This year's November Sale also will offer a single session dedicated to horses of racing age that will take place the final day – immediately following 148 cataloged head of breeding stock. Because Keeneland extended the entry deadline for the racehorse segment until Oct. 4, information about the offerings will be posted online in mid-October and appear in a separate print catalog available on the grounds.

Keeneland will continue to accept supplements to Book 1 of the November Sale and to the horses of racing age portion until the auction begins.

“The Keeneland November Sale is unmatched globally in terms of scale and quality, and the anticipation for the sale is building,” Keeneland Vice President of Sales Tony Lacy said. “Buyers will find proven producers, coveted broodmare prospects who were successful racehorses and royally bred weanlings at all levels of the market, particularly in the prestigious Book 1. The November Sale will span 10 days with the following schedule:

Book 1 – Wednesday, Nov. 10. Session begins at 1 p.m. ET. A total of 221 horses are cataloged.

All remaining sessions begin at 10 a.m.:

Book 2-5 – Thursday, Nov. 11-Friday, Nov. 19.

Kentucky Derby winner and Horse of the Year Authentic will be represented by his first in-foal mares at the November Sale. Other notable young stallions with their first in-foal mares in the catalog include champions Game Winner, Improbable and Maximum Security; Kentucky Derby winner Country House; Preakness winner War of Will; Belmont winner Tiz the Law and Grade 1 winners Complexity, Echo Town, Gift Box, Global Campaign, Honor A. The November Sale catalog also includes the final mares in foal to Bernardini, Laoban and Malibu Moon.

Keeneland November Weanling Purchase Light Of Darkness Captures Turkey’s 1000 Guineas

The latest example of the international impact of Keeneland's Thoroughbred auctions is the success of the 3-year-old filly Light of Darkness, who sold at Keeneland as a weanling and is one of 2021's most accomplished performers in Turkey.

Owner Cem Sevim purchased Light of Darkness at Keeneland's 2018 November Breeding Stock Sale and watched her score a 1 1/2-length victory in the $130,000 Turkish 1000 Guineas, the nation's biggest race for the division, on May 16 at Veliefendi racecourse in Istanbul. The Kentucky-bred daughter of Red Rocks has won five consecutive group stakes during her undefeated season.

“She did a great job, and she is the most popular horse in Turkey,” said Sevim, a former professional soccer player who lives in Washington, D.C., where he is a developer and has a construction company. “We have a plan to take her to a couple of European tracks for racing and hopefully to Dubai next year. Of course, my big dream is returning home with her and have few races in Kentucky. After all, she is from there.”

Light of Darkness was bred by Calumet Farm, where Red Rocks – a member of the first crop by Galileo who won the 2006 John Deere Breeders' Cup Turf at Churchill Downs and the 2008 Grade 1 Man o' War at Belmont – stood until his death in 2018.

The filly is out of the Grade 2-placed winning Danehill mare Charming Legacy and is from the family of G1 Santa Anita Derby winner Rock Your World, a candidate for the June 5 Belmont Stakes, and Grade 2 winner Liam the Charmer. Charming Legacy is the dam of seven starters with seven winners.

“Moment I see her, I loved her,” Sevim said. “Honestly, I was ready to pay much more.”

In fact, he was the lone bidder.

“Back then I couldn't believe that nobody (bid) on her and still can't,” he said. “I understand more and more how blessed I was.”

Sevim, who said he returns to Turkey “10 times a year, at least” and has attended all nine of Light of Darkness' career races, owns breeding stock and racehorses both in Turkey and the U.S. His brother Ozgur Sevim handles paperwork related to the operation, and he named the filly.

Cem Sevim said he became interested in horses as a boy and fondly remembers how his late mother encouraged him to take a noontime nap each day.

“(At the time) TV programs were very limited and my favorite show was 'Bonanza,' ” he said. “(She'd tell me) if I take a nap, when I wake up (a man named) Hans is going to bring his white horse and tie him to the tree in front of our house and I can feed and pet him.

“I was a child with lots of imagination, so I didn't know the horse belonged to the guy who sells milk to the neighborhood. Back then, those vendors used horses to carry the milk gallons. My mother knew his delivery time was the same as when I woke up, and she also knew how much I loved that show. She put two and two together and started my career.

“I fed that horse couple of years and said 'hi' to the guy, thinking he was Hans 'Cartwright.' He was so similar (to a character on 'Bonanza.') He had white hat; he was big and had a very nice smile. She used to wake me up by saying, 'Hans and his horse arrived.' Now I am telling her, 'Mom, my horses have arrived.'

“I am sure she hears me, and I am pretty sure she has a big part in all my winnings.”

Sevim, who first attended a Keeneland sale in 2016, is among the large group of Turkish horsemen who annually buys horses at the November Sale, but they usually concentrate on broodmares. The purchase of Light of Darkness as a weanling represents a new opportunity for them and for Keeneland.

“I think she is (Keeneland's) best promoter in Turkey now,” Sevim said. “People are asking left and right about her relatives and all about her. (Keeneland will) probably see lots of interested buyers this year. It is like a fashion: One goes, the rest follow.”
