Keeneland Catalogs 1,588 Horses for January Sale

A total of 1,588 horses have been cataloged for the upcoming Keeneland January Horses of All Ages Sale, which will be held in Lexington Jan. 11-14. On offer at the four-day auction will be 808 broodmares and broodmare prospects, 697 short yearlings, 78 horses of racing age and five stallion or stallion prospects.

The catalogue features horses from the dispersals of Sam-Son Farm, the late Paul Pompa, Jr., and Spry Family Farm.

Sam-Son Farm, a multiple Eclipse Award- and Sovereign Award-winning breed-to-race operation based in Ontario, will offer 21 broodmares in foal to Accelerate, American Pharoah, Bernardini, Candy Ride (Arg), City of Light, Distorted Humor, Hard Spun, Into Mischief, Kantharos, Kitten’s Joy, Lookin At Lucky, Malibu Moon, Munnings, Omaha Beach, Speightstown, Street Sense, Twirling Candy, Uncle Mo and War Front.

Hill ‘n’ Dale Sales Agency, agent, will handle 46 horses cataloged in the Dispersal of Spry Family Farm, including 11 mares in foal to stallions Ghostzapper, Speightstown, Maclean’s Music, Midshipman and Take Charge Indy; 10 foals of 2020 by Creative Cause, Ghostzapper, Maclean’s Music and Tapiture; nine foals of 2019 by Lea, Maclean’s Music and Temple City; and

16 racing or broodmare prospects by such sires as Uncle Mo, Frankel (GB), Invincible Spirit (Ire), Medaglia d’Oro and Kodiac (GB).

The 39 horses in the Complete Dispersal of the late Paul P. Pompa Jr., Lane’s End, agent, are broodmares, foals of 2020, horses of racing age and broodmare or stallion prospects.

“This year’s January sale is especially deep because of the Sam-Son, Paul Pompa and Spry Family Farm dispersals, which offer one-of-a-kind opportunities to obtain breeding and racing stock from established, successful operations,” Keeneland President-Elect and Interim Head of Sales Shannon Arvin said. “These dispersals further enhance the January sale’s reputation for being a source of quality broodmares prior to breeding season and a popular market for newly turned yearlings and horses of racing age.”

Each session of the January sale will begin at 10 a.m. ET. Keeneland will continue to offer online and phone bidding to enable buyers to participate in the January sale remotely while employing onsite COVID-19 protocols similar to those used during its two recent auctions.

Keeneland January Sale To Include Paul Pompa Jr. Dispersal

Keeneland will offer 39 horses in the complete dispersal of the late Paul P. Pompa Jr. – including Turned Aside, winner of Saturday's Aqueduct Turf Sprint Championship, and additional 2020 Grade 3 winners Country Grammer and Regal Glory – during the 2021 January Horses of All Ages Sale, to be held Jan. 11-14.

Lane's End will serve as agent for the consignment, which consists of broodmares, foals of 2020, horses of racing age and broodmare or stallion prospects.

The January Sale catalog is scheduled to be online at Keeneland.com on Dec. 8.

“Mr. Pompa's industry involvement was admirable on every level,” Lane's End sales director Allaire Ryan said. “He was dedicated to and ever enthusiastic about his investments as a breeder, owner and fan. He created strong relationships around a lifelong passion and never wavered from his philosophy to do right by his stock and enjoy the sport. Eight mares in the Pompa dispersal are in foal to Connect, a Grade 1-winning son of Curlin who raced for Pompa and stands at Lane's End.

Among the horses cataloged in the dispersal are these broodmares and foals of 2020:

Mary's Follies, a Grade 2 winner by More Than Ready who is the dam of multiple graded stakes winners Night Prowler and Regal Glory as well as 2020 Japanese multiple Group 3 winner Cafe Pharoah.
A colt by Connect-Mary's Follies foaled in 2020.
Sustained, a Grade 3-placed daughter of War Front who is the dam of Turned Aside and is in foal to Connect.

These fillies of racing age:

Off Topic, a Grade 1-placed 4-year-old filly by Street Sense.
Regal Glory, a Grade 2-winning 4-year-old daughter of Animal Kingdom who has earned $773,884. Winner of the Grade 3 Kentucky Downs Ladies Turf in her most recent race, Regal Glory also won the G2 Lake Placid and G3 Lake George at Saratoga along with the Penn Oaks and Stewart Manor Stakes.

These colts of racing age:

Country Grammer, a 3-year-old son of Tonalist who won this year's G3 Peter Pan.
Spirit Maker, a 2-year-old colt by Empire Maker who won his career debut Saturday at Aqueduct by 1 3/4 lengths.
Turned Aside, a 3-year-old colt by American Pharoah who won the G3 Quick Call at Saratoga in July and most recently captured the Aqueduct Turf Sprint Championship by 1 1/4 lengths. He has four wins in nine starts with earnings of $241,967.

“We have great respect for Paul – as a horseman, businessman and person – and were so saddened by his passing. Keeneland is honored to be given the responsibility of presenting the Pompa dispersal,” Keeneland president-elect and interim head of sales Shannon Arvin said. “Our relationship with Paul includes his purchase of future Kentucky Derby winner Big Brown at the 2007 Keeneland April Sale, and we have been thrilled to have several horses from his stable win stakes races here at Keeneland.”

At the 2007 April 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale, Pompa paid $190,000 for Big Brown through Hidden Brook, agent, from the consignment of Eddie Woods, agent. Raced by Pompa in partnership, Big Brown captured his first five races, including the 2008 G1 Florida Derby, Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes. The son of Boundary closed the season with victories in the G1 Haskell Invitational and Monmouth Stakes en route to earning the Eclipse Award as champion 3-year-old male.

At Keeneland, Pompa campaigned Night Prowler to win the 2015 G3 Transylvania. In partnership with Stephen Yarbrough and Anthony Grey, he raced Franny Freud to win the 2010 G2 Beaumont.

Sam-Son Farm Announces Upcoming Dispersal Of Breeding And Racing Stock

Sam-Son Farm, one of the most celebrated and successful Thoroughbred operations in North America, announced today that it will be dispersing its breeding and racing stock during the next 12-18 months.

Sam-Son is partnering with the Fasig-Tipton and Keeneland organizations to present this rare opportunity for buyers to acquire world-class racing talent and breeding stock from one of the true breed-to-race operations in the business.

Ernie Samuel founded Sam-Son Farm in 1972 and built it into a world-renowned racing and breeding operation. After his death in 2000, his daughter Tammy Samuel-Balaz took over the reins at Sam-Son and led the farm to numerous victories and awards until her own passing in 2008. Today the farm is run by farm manager Dave Whitford and racing manager, Tom Zwiesler, under the leadership of owners, Rick Balaz (President), Mark Samuel (CEO) and Kim Samuel, who have sustained and built upon the farm's sterling reputation and legacy of success. After serious consideration and discussion, the owners have unanimously decided to initiate an orderly dispersal and to step back from active participation in the racing and breeding world.

Sam-Son Farm has bred and raced 44 graded stakes winners in the famed red and gold silks, including 37 classic winners, and 14 Grade 1 winners. The legendary operation has garnered 84 Sovereign Awards and won four Eclipse Awards, including the 2019 Sovereign Awards for Owner and Breeder of the Year.

The Samuel/Balaz families commented as follows; “We are enormously proud of the quality and longevity of Sam-Son Farm and have enjoyed nurturing and celebrating every stage of the equine cycle from breeding, to raising, to racing, to retirement and often, returning to the breeding shed. Our horses have given generations of our family such fulfillment and excitement over the years and we felt that the time had come, after five decades, to now share that legacy with the world. Sam-Son has seen its iconic red and gold silks carried by such champions as Dance Smartly, the first Canadian-owned and -bred horse to win a Breeders' Cup race and who, in her undefeated 3-year-old season of 1991, became just the second filly in history to win the Canadian Triple Crown.

Other champions include Breeders' Cup winner Chief Bearhart, Eclipse Award winner Sky Classic; Dancethruthedawn, Quiet Resolve, Rainbow's for Life, Ruling Angel, Silken Cat, Soaring Free, Wilderness Song and many more.

Sam-Son also bred and raced Grade 1 winner and influential sire Smart Strike, a half-brother to Dance Smartly. The son of champion Sire Mr. Prospector had a magnificent career at stud. A true sire of sires, Smart Strike topped the American General Sire List in 2007 and 2008 and was inducted into the Canadian Racing Hall of Fame in 2008.

Sam-Son's dispersal program will debut at the upcoming Fasig-Tipton November Sale with two stunning racing/broodmare prospects and two outstanding in-foal mares. This consignment will consist of 2019 Canadian champion 3-year-old filly Desert Ride; recent Grade 2 winner Rideforthecause; stakes winner and track record holder Desert Isle in foal to American Pharoah and the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf winner Shared Account in foal to Speightstown.

Rideforthecause, a lightly raced daughter of Candy Ride (ARG) out of the Giant's Causeway mare Danceforthecause notched her first stakes win on Sept. 12 of this year in the G2 Canadian Stakes, at Woodbine. She represents one of the oldest and by far the most successful family in our program, dating back to none other than foundation broodmare, No Class. This filly's star is on the rise, making her a magnificent racing and breeding opportunity.

Woodbine Oaks winner Desert Ride dates back to Oleana through five generations, giving her the unique distinction of being a descendant of the oldest family in our program. She is a daughter of the Distorted Humor mare Fun in the Desert who herself is a half-sister to champion Eye of the Leopard. Desert Isle is by leading broodmare sire Bernardini and is also a member of this family. She is a half-sister to Eye of the Leopard, making her a daughter of the champion filly and broodmare Eye of the Sphynx.

Sam-Son will also offer Shared Account, the first Breeders' Cup winner and dam of a Breeders' Cup winner to ever be offered at public auction. The accomplished daughter of Pleasantly Perfect captured the 2010 Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf and is in foal to Speightstown, so she is carrying a full sibling to Sharing, winner of the 2019 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. Incidentally, both Pleasantly Perfect and Speightstown were also Breeders' Cup winners, making this offering a genetic masterpiece that is surely primed and ready to yield future generations of top-class racehorses.

Sam-Son Farm will present its remaining in-foal mares at the 2021 Keeneland January Horses of all Ages Sale. This consignment currently stands at 21 and will feature a unique audio-video presentation of each individual mare on the morning of Saturday, Jan. 9. This quality group includes Grade 1 producers Danceforthecause and Song of the Lark as well as young stakes-winning mares Checkered Past, Dance Again, Deceptive Vision, Mythical Mission, Smartyfly and Southern Ring. Covering sires include American Pharoah, Candy Ride (ARG), Into Mischief, Kitten's Joy, Speightstown. and Street Sense.
