Impeccably Bred Justify Colt Debuts at Chukyo

In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Here are the horses of interest for this weekend running at Chukyo Racecourse. Top-level racing makes a much-anticipated return to Japan this weekend with the running of the G1 Sprinters' S. at Nakayama, where the fairer sex looks to hold all the aces:

Saturday, October 1, 2022
3rd-CKO, ¥13,400,000 ($93k), Newcomers, 2yo, 1800m
GOLDEN MIC (c, 2, Justify–Sambuca Classica, by Cat Thief) seeks to become the seventh winner from eight foals to the races for his dam, who accounts for GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile and Eclipse Award winner Classic Empire (Pioneerof the Nile), making a name for himself alongside this colt's freshman sire at Coolmore America. The $625,000 Keeneland September yearling is also a half-brother to SW Anytime Magic (Fusaichi Pegasus) and to MSW Uptown Twirl (Twirling Candy), whose son Presidential (Pioneerof the Nile) just missed in this year's Texas Derby. Golden Mic's yearling full-brother fetched $575,000 from Maverick Racing and Siena Farm at the just-concluded September Sale. Golden Mic has drawn widest in a field of 10 with Yasunari Iwata at the controls for Hideyuki Mori. B-CHC Inc (KY)

RED KHAFRA (c, 2, American Pharoah–A. P. Dream, by A. P. Indy) is out of a daughter of Kinsman Farm's MGISW Dream Supreme (Seeking the Gold), the dam of GISW sire Majestic Warrior (A. P. Indy) and his SW full-sister Crystal Current–dam of three stakes horses including GSP Crystal Glacier (Curlin)–as well as SW & GSP Evolutionist (El Prado {Ire}). Red Khafra, who was bought back on a bid of $245,000 at KEESEP last year, counts fellow GI Ballerina S. heroine Spinning Round (Dixieland Band) as his third dam. Hayato Yoshida, best known for his association with champion white filly Sodashi (Jpn), has the call from gate one. B-Kinsman Farm (KY)

Sunday, October 2, 2022
1st-CKO, ¥9,900,000 ($68k), Maiden, 2yo, 1800m
KAUPILI (Frosted) is out of a winner of North Hills' Tenno Sho (Autumn) heroine Heavenly Romance (Jpn) (Sunday Silence), but may not have taken to the turf when beaten just under 10 lengths in ninth on career debut at Hanshin in June. The grey switches to the dirt for this and has a license to appreciate the change, as the filly is a half-sister to Awardee (Jungle Pocket {Jpn}), twice a winner and Group 3 level and twice Group 1-placed on the surface; five-time dirt stakes scorer Amour Briller (Smart Strike); and a close relative of G2 UAE Derby hero and GI Belmont S. placegetter Lani (Tapit). Oscar Performance Represented By First Japanese Starter

In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Here are the horses of interest for this weekend running Saturday at Tokyo and Sunday at Hanshin. The latter venue plays host to Sunday's G1 Takarazuka Kinen, the final top-level event in Japan for three months and offering the winner a spot in the field for the GI Breeders' Cup Turf in November. The field appears at the end of TDN Europe and a full preview can be found in Saturday's TDN Euro:

Saturday, June 25, 2022
5th-TOK, ¥13,400,000 ($99k), Newcomers, 2yo, 1800mT
MEINER VISION (JPN) (c, 2, Oscar Performance–Songoficeandfire, by Dynaformer) becomes the first Japanese starter for his first-crop sire (by Kitten's Joy), who has already been represented by the impressive debut scorer Andthewinneris at Keeneland at the end of April. The bay is the third to the races for his dam, twice placed in turf marathon events at Grade III level and acquired for $200K with this colt in utero at the 2020 Keeneland January Sale. Songoficeandfire is a daughter of G1 Yorkshire Oaks heroine Catchascatchcan (GB) (Pursuit of Love {GB}), the dam of Irish Group 2 winner Antonius Pius (Danzig), whose Group 1 placings included the St James's Palace, the Prix du Moulin and the Breeders' Cup Mile. 5th-HSN, ¥13,400,000 ($99k), Newcomers, 2yo, 1800mT
KAUPILI (c, 2, Frosted–Heavenly Romance {Jpn}, by Sunday Silence) is the latest produce for his Tenno Sho-winning dam, whose other notable offspring include MGSW/MG1SP and $4-million earner Awardee (Jungle Pocket {Jpn}), five-time stakes winner Amour Briller (Smart Strike) and the enigmatic G2 UAE Derby winner and GI Belmont S. third Lani (Tapit) from the same sire line. It should be noted that the three siblings were a combined four for 30 on the grass, but improved dramatically with a switch to the dirt track. B-North Hills Co Limited (KY)
