Dec. 2 Insights: $1M Son of City of Light Looks to Shine in Big Apple

2nd-AQU, $85k, Msw, 2yo, 7f, 12:20p.m. ET
From the family of GISW Acoma (Empire Maker) and her half-brother, the late, great GISW Arch (Kris S.), CONQUEST WARRIOR (City of Light) will be the priciest unveiling on the afternoon in New York, carrying a princely $1 million tag from the 2022 KEESEP sale. Racing for Courtlandt Farms under the tutelage of Shug McGaughey, the colt is a half-sibling to a series of winners out of dam MSW Tea Time (Pulpit) including unraced 3-year-old filly Soul Play (Union Rags), who was also purchased from KEESEP by Courtlandt Farms in 2021 for $200,000. This is the family of two-time champion MGISW Covfefe (Into Mischief).

Racing for Gold Square LLC and Tami Bobo will be the grey son of Curlin, Hop Sing, for conditioner Jose D'Angelo. Out of a half-sister to GISW Cupid (Tapit); MGSW Heart Ashley (Lion Heart)–herself dam of MGSW-Jpn Fiano Romano (Aus) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) and that one's full-sibling Ameristralia (Aus), who produced GII Chandelier winner Ain't Easy (Into Mischief); and GSW Ashley's Kitten (Tale of the Cat), Hop Sing can also claim MGSW Kathleen O. and 'TDN Rising Star' GSW & GISP V V's Dream (Mitole) as relatives. 2nd-FG, $52k, Msw, 2yo, f, 1mT, 2:15p.m. ET
Breaking next to another 'Insight' runner, Jam's Paper Moon (Oscar Performance) will head to post from the Brendan Walsh barn for owner Jamm Ltd. A half-sister to GISW Duopoly (Animal Kingdom), who joined Japan's venerable breeding program when changing hands to Katsumi Yoshida for $1.6m at FTKNOV in 2021, the filly lays claims to a very busy international family including a twice-placed Kitten's Joy half-brother in England.

To her outside is Ms Sedona (Justify), a $300,000 KEESEP procurement for James F Schurman. Trained by Tom Morley, her only other half-sibling to the races is a winning half-sister, but her sire has been red hot on all surfaces this season, so a mile on the turf figures to be right in her wheelhouse. Ms Sedona hails from a female line with a fleet of accomplished runners including the likes of multiple highweight MGSW & G1SP Usherette (Ire); MGSW & MGISP Expansion; and MG1SW Vespone (Ire). 9th-DMR, $61k, Msw, 2yo, f, 1mT, 7:25p.m. ET
A half-sister to GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf victress Aunt Pearl (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}), Muri (Ire) (Le Havre {Ire}) was a 290,000gns TATOCT purchase by Mike Ryan for Cheyenne Stable in 2022. Her dam, Scandinavian champion Matauri Pearl (Ire), is herself a half-sister to GSW & MGISP-US, GSW & G1SP-Fr Wekeela (Fr) (Hurricane Run {Ire}). G1 Qatar Prix du Cadran victress Molly Malone (Fr) (Lomitas {GB}) and multiple highweight MGSW Morgan Le Faye (GB) (Shamardal) mark the most recent talented runners in a busy European female line.  TJCIS PPs

Mitole’s V V’s Dream Streaks to ‘Rising Star’-dom at Churchill

She'd been the buzz horse among the Churchill locals all day and V V's Dream (Mitole) took the first baby steps to making quite a few come true while securing 'TDN Rising Star'-dom in this stylish unveiling.

Breaking slowly and asked to race in seventh from two off the rail going into the turn, the grey bided her time as the field watched the other Mitole Cheetah Miss put up all the fractions as :21.90 and :45.59 flashed across the board.

Rolling under a full head of steam and splitting rivals from four wide as they turned for home, V V's Dream was under supremely confident handling passing the leader at the sixteenth pole. She kicked clear to win by 6 1/4 lengths, securing the nod from the TDN as well as claiming the honor of being her freshman sire (by Eskendereya)'s first North American winner and his flag-bearing 'Rising Star'. The final time was :57.91 was the five furlongs.

The most recent winner for her dam Quay, whose half-sister Quaver (Blame) is the dam of MGSW Kathleen O. (Upstart), V V's Dream hails from the female line of GISW Cupid (Tapit); MGSW Heart Ashley (Lion heart), herself responsible for MGSW-Jpn Fiano Romano (Aus) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) and that one's full-sister GSP-Aus Ameristralia (Aus)–who in turn produced GSW Ain't Easy (Into Mischief); and course-record setter, MGSW Hostess. V V's Dream is the third winner and has a yearling half-brother by Volatile who was exported to Saudi Arabia as well as a 2023 half-brother by Yaupon.

Classic Empire Filly Makes the Grade in Royal Delta

Saturday's GIII Royal Delta S. looked like a rematch of last March's local GII Davona Dale S., with New York-bred Classy Edition turning the tables on favored foe Kathleen O. after enjoying a decided tactical advantage early.

Named a 'TDN Rising Star' off her dominant Saratoga debut at two, Classy Edition dominated in a pair of restricted stakes downstate that fall before suffering her first defeat at the hooves of Kathleen O. She was subsequently fourth in the GIII Gazelle S. at the Big A in April, but resurfaced to drub first-level open optional claiming foes going a mile here Jan. 11, good for a 96 Beyer Speed Figure top.

Late-running Kathleen O. fell out of the gate, but Classy Edition broke cleanly and was wrapped up by Irad Ortiz, Jr. as they cruised through opening splits of :25.28 and :50.15. Ortiz gave his mount her cue to pick it up rounding the bend, and she took a narrow advantage heading for home as longshot Tap Dance Fever (Tapiture) tried to stay with her and the chalk revved up out wide. Classy Edition swatted away Tap Dance Fever at the quarter pole, and Kathleen O. narrowed the gap in the lane, but Class Edition's edge proved insurmountable.

“She was going good on the backside. We were going slow but she was close to the lead,” Ortiz said. “I let her do her thing and she did the rest.”

Winning conditioner Todd Pletcher said, “I was pretty pleased. We got to a good spot and it looked like Irad had a lot of horse, just waiting to pull the trigger… We really thought highly of her. She showed quality. She ran a good second in the race here and then needed some time off. She came back really well. I thought her comeback race was excellent. We kind of had a little tactical edge today and she was able to get it done.”

Pedigree Notes:

Classy Edition was her sire's priciest first-crop juvenile at $550,000 after a good-looking :10 1/5 breeze at Timonium, and became his third graded stakes winner–the previous two also sold as 2-year-olds that term (Morello, $250K at the same sale; and Interstatedaydream, $175K at OBSAPR), and Angel of Empire made it four in Saturday evening's GII Risen Star S. She is one of 39 worldwide graded winners out of mares by top broodmare sire Bernardini and is bred Pioneerof the Nile over Bernardini like GISW Matareya and from the same Unbridled line as highest-level winners out of Bernardini mares Colonel Liam (Liam's Map) and Wicked Whisper (Liam's Map). Angel of Empire is out of a mare by Bernardini's son To Honor and Serve.

The winner's dam Newbie was a first-level allowance winner in the Empire state, and also produced $500,000-plus MSW Newly Minted (Central Banker). The daughter of SW/GSP Changeisgonnacome was a $320,000 in utero purchase by Chester and Mary Broman at the 2008 Keeneland November sale. Newbie has an unraced 3-year-old colt named Pharoah Lake (American Pharoah) and a yearling colt by Vekoma. She was barren to Curlin for 2023.

Rich Strike Looks to Bolster Resume in Clark

GI Kentucky Derby upsetter Rich Strike (Keen Ice) hopes to strengthen his case for a year-end championship title as he takes on his elders in the GI Clark H. Friday at Churchill Downs.

Right now, the 3-year-old male divisional title could go any way. Taiba (Gun Runner) and Cyberknife (Gun Runner) each have a pair of Grade Is to their credit and Epicenter (Not This Time) won the GI Runhappy Travers S. In addition to finishing second in the first two legs of the Triple Crown.

Rich Strike only has one top-level score to his name, but it's a big one, taking home the roses at a whopping 80-1. Skipping the GI Preakness S., he failed to fire in the GI Belmont S. in June, but showed improvement when fourth in the Travers. The chestnut missed by just a head to the gutsy Hot Rod Charlie (Oxbow) in the GII Lukas Classic at this venue Oct. 1 and was fourth last out, behind third-place Taiba, in the GI Breeders' Cup Classic Nov. 5 at Keeneland. Rich Strike clearly loves Churchill Downs, having broken his maiden by 17 1/4 lengths in his other start at this venue, and could put himself in the dual Grade I winner category just in time.

The Derby winner won't have it easy, however. He faces a host of talented challengers, including GII Hagyard Fayette S. romper West Will Power (Bernardini). Runner-up Fulsome (Into Mischief), a four-time Grade III winner, and third-place Last Samurai (Malibu Moon) also return here. Also worth strong consideration is Godolphin homebred Proxy (Tapit), last seen closing to be third behind Classic runner-up Olympiad (Speightstown) in the GII Stephen Foster S. at this oval July 2.

Churchill's post-Thanksgiving card also features the GII Mrs. Revere S. for 3-year-old turf fillies. GII Rubicon Valley View S. runner-up California Angel (California Chrome) tops the field, but should the Bubble Rock (More Than Ready) who won the GIII Matron S. show up this time, she could be in trouble.

Aqueduct plays host to a pair of graded events, the GIII Long Island S. for female turf routers and the GIII Comely S. for sophomore fillies on the main track. The latter features the return of dual graded winner Kathleen O. (Upstart). Opening her account with a quartet of victories, including the GII Davona Dale S. and GII Gulfstream Park Oaks, the dark bay suffered her first career defeat when rallying for fifth in the GI Kentucky Oaks and has not been seen since.

Godolphin homebred Nostalgic (Medaglia d'Oro) won a graded event at this oval in the spring, the GIII Gazelle S., and missed by a neck last out here in the GIII Turnback the Alarm H. Nov. 4.

GI Cotillion S. runner-up Morning Matcha (Central Banker) and Seneca Overnight S. one-two Sixtythreecaliber (Gun Runner) and Falconet (Uncle Mo) also return in this competitive field.

Rounding out Friday's graded action is the GII Hollywood Turf Cup S. at Del Mar.
