Eclipse Apprentice Kimura Wins First Graded Stakes Guiding Lady Grace To Royal North Victory

Lady Grace and jockey Kazushi Kimura just missed the track record, taking the Grade 2 Royal North Stakes in 1:06.90 on Saturday at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, Ontario.

The six-furlong record for the E.P. Taylor Turf Course is 1:06.88, set by Kasuga on July 7, 2017.

Tracy Farmer's Lady Grace led a Mark Casse exacta worth $131.20 in the $175,000 co-feature for fillies and mares, with 11-1 shot Eyeinthesky and Patrick Husbands finishing a close second.

Making her graded stakes debut, Lady Grace settled off the pace near the back of the pack and staged a late rally between rivals to pull off the mild 6-1 upset and return $14.80 to win.

A third-place finisher in last year's William D. Graham Memorial Stakes at Woodbine, Lady Grace entered the Royal North fresh off a three-length victory in a six-furlong allowance turf sprint three weeks ago.

“Last time winning with her, the filly was such a nice horse,” said Kimura. “I'm not surprised today.”

“Last time I went to the front, but today there were so many speed horses to the front side, I just changed my mind, sat behind, stalking from behind then she came flying today.” 

The favorites were on top, led by Sister Peacock through panels of :21.91 and :43.50. Her popular stablemate Summer Sunday, Canada's reigning Champion Female Sprinter, pressed the pace with supplemental entry Gamble's Candy three-wide and Foxy Belle stalking along the rail.

However, the late-closers stole the show. Lady Grace came flying by to prevail by three-quarters of a length with Gary Barber's Eyeinthesky, who closed from mid-pack, edging out Bohemian Bourbon, Charmaine's Mia and Sister Peacock for the runner-up honours.

It was 3 1/4 lengths back to Foxy Belle at the finish, with Summer Sunday and Gamble's Candy rounding out the order.

Bred in Florida by William C. Schettine and Willian B. Haines, the four-year-old Kantharos-Smart Sis filly is a half-sister to multiple graded stakes winner Sis City.

Kimura, who was named Outstanding Apprentice Jockey in both Canada and the U.S. last year, picked up his first graded stakes victory. He was the top turf rider and won a total of 146 races in 2019 to place third in Woodbine's overall jockey standings. While his apprenticeship ended last October, the talented reinsman sits fourth on the leaderboard with 23 wins in a close race through the first 24 race days of the current meet.

Live Thoroughbred racing continues, without spectators, on Sunday at Woodbine Racetrack with post time for the first of nine races set for 1 p.m.

Shackleford Filly Tops OBS July Sale’s Opening Session

Hip No. 15, Shack's Lil Mishap, a daughter of  Shackleford consigned by Coastal Equine LLC (Jesse Hoppel), Agent, went to Donato Lanni, Agent, for $375,000 to top the first session of the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's 2020 July Sale of 2-Year-Olds and Horses of Racing Age.

The bay filly, whose quarter in :20 4/5 seconds was the fastest work at the distance at Monday's under tack session, is out of Peace Queen, by Indian Charlie, a half sister to graded stakes winner Tizaqueena.

  • Patrice Miller, EQB, Inc., Agent, paid $350,000 for Hip No. 115, a daughter of Malibu Moon, whose eighth in :10 flat was co-fastest at the distance at Monday's under tack session. Consigned by Wavertree Stables, Inc., (Ciaran Dunne), Agent, the chestnut filly is out of Samsational, by Unbridled's Song, a half-sister to Grade 1 winner I Want Revenge.
  • Hip No. 200, a son of Honor Code consigned by Dark Star Thoroughbreds (Stori Atchison), Agent, was purchased by Speedway Stable for $340,000. The dark bay or brown colt, who breezed a quarter in :21 2/5 on Tuesday, is a half-brother to stakes winner Wake Up Nick out of Storm Hearted, by Lion Hearted.
  • Hip No. 103, a son of Not This Time consigned by Ocala Stud, was sold to Breeze Easy LLC for $250,000. The half-brother to stakes winner Softly Lit, who worked a quarter on Monday in :21 1/5, is out of Running Creek, by Cape Town, a daughter of graded stakes winner Palliser Bay.
  • Hip No. 331, a daughter of Kantharos consigned by de Meric Sales, Agent, went to Parker Place Racing for $220,000. The chestnut filly, who breezed an eighth in :10 flat on Tuesday, is out of stakes winner Wildcat Heiress, by Wildcat Heir, a half-sister to stakes winner Babaganush.
  • Hip No. 158, a daughter of Medaglia d'Oro consigned by All In Line Stables, Agent, was sold to Joseph Brocklebank, Agent, for $200,000. The dark bay or brown filly, who turned in an under tack quarter on Monday in :21 2/5, is out of Sigurwana, by Arch, a half-sister to stakes winner Token of Love (GB).
  • J. Stable LLC paid $170,000 for Hip No. 228, a daughter of Flatter who breezed an eighth in :10 1/5 on Tuesday. The chestnut filly, consigned by de Meric Sales, Agent, is out of Sweet Carrie, by Sidney's Candy, a half-sister to Grade 1 winner The Factor.
  • Hip No. 342, a son of Cairo Prince consigned by Eddie Woods, Agent, brought $150,000, going to Carolyn Wilson. The gray or roan colt, who breezed an eighth in :10 1/5 on Tuesday, is out of Written Request, by Arch, a daughter of stakes winner Petition the Lady.

For the session, 147 horses grossed $4,788,800, compared with 204 selling for a total of $6,119,500 at last year's first session. The average was $32,577 compared with $29,998 a year ago, while the median price was $13,000, compared to $17,500 in 2019. The buyback percentage was 32.6 percent; it was 22.4 percent last year.

The July Sale continues Wednesday at 10 a.m. Hip No.'s 361 – 720 will be offered.

Will Take Charge Filly Fastest At Second OBS July Under Tack Session

Hip No. 245, a daughter of Will Take Charge consigned by Top Line Sales, LLC, Agent, worked a quarter in :20 4/5 to post the fastest work at the distance at the second session of the under tack show for Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's 2020 July Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training and Horses of Racing Age. The chestnut filly is out of stakes winner Tensas Harbor, by Private Vow, a half sister to stakes placed Harbor Pilot.

A pair of horses breezed quarters in :21 flat.

  • Hip No. 278, a bay colt by Bernardini consigned by Ends Well, Agent, is a half brother to graded stakes winner Trouble Kid out of Triumphantly, by Mr. Greeley, a half-sister to stakes placed Touch of Splendor.
  • Hip No. 300, Unshackled Love, a bay filly by Golden Ticket consigned by Coastal Equine LLC (Jesse Hoppel), Agent, is out of Unshackled Rouge, by Sir Shackleton, a half-sister to stakes winning OBS graduate Be Proud.

Five horses shared honors for the session's fastest eighth, clocked in :10 flat.

  • Hip No. 199, a gray or roan filly by Anchor Down consigned by Woodside Ranch, Agent, is out of Storied Tale, by Tale of the Cat, a daughter of graded stakes winner Caminadora.

  • Hip No. 331, a chestnut filly by Kantharos consigned by de Meric Sales, Agent, is out of stakes winner Wildcat Heiress, by Wildcat Heir, a half-sister to stakes winner Babaganush.

$1.25-Million Quality Road Colt Tops OBS Spring Sale’s Final Session

Hip No. 1018, a son of Quality Road consigned by Wavertree Stables, Inc., (Ciaran Dunne), Agent, went to Ben McElroy, Agent for Arman Shah, for $1.25 million to top the fourth and final session of the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's 2020 Spring Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training.

The bay colt, who breezed a quarter in :20 3/5 at Friday's under tack session, is a half-brother to graded stakes-placed stakes winner Standard Deviation out of False Impression, by A.P. Indy.

  • Hip No. 1312, Fortunate Son, a son of Speightster consigned by Tom McCrocklin, Agent, was purchased by OXO Equine LLC for $1.1 million. The chestnut colt, who breezed a quarter on Saturday in :20 4/5, is out of stakes-placed Auspicious, by Indian Charlie, a half-sister to graded stakes-placed Flatter Than Me.

The bay filly, consigned by Eddie Woods, Agent, is out of stakes placed Iroquois Girl, by Indian Charlie, a half-sister to graded stakes winner Salty Strike.
  • Joseph Brocklebank, Agent, went to $475,000 for Hip No. 1060, a daughter of Empire Maker consigned by Halcyon Hammock Farm, Agent. The bay filly, who worked an eighth in :10 flat on Saturday, is out of Full Tap, by Tapit, a daughter of stakes winner Miss Challenge.
  • Hip No. 1149, a son of Hard Spun consigned by Eisaman Equine, Agent, was purchased for $400,000 by Belladonna Racing II, LLC. The dark bay or brown filly, who turned in an under tack eighth on Saturday in :10 flat, is out of High Wire Act, by Medallist, a half-sister to graded stakes-placed stakes winner Not Abroad.
  • Hip No. 1314, a son of Flatter also consigned by Tom McCrocklin, was sold for $400,000 to J. A. S. The bay colt, who turned in a quarter in :20 4/5 on Saturday, is a full-brother to graded stakes-winning OBS graduate Favorable Outcome out of stakes winner Shananies Song, by Eltish.

For the day, 161 horses brought a total of $18,514,500 compared with 155 selling for a total of $16,728,000 last year. The average price was $114,997, up 6.5 percent compared to $107,923 in 2019, while the median price was $50,000, identical to last year's figure. The buyback percentage was 15.7 percent; it was 22.5 percent in 2019.

For the entire sale, 635 horses sold for a total of $58,905,000 compared with 674 horses bringing a sale record $72,945,000 in 2019. The average price was $92,764, compared with 2019's sale record $108,227. The median was $50,000 compared with last year's record $60,000. The buyback percentage was 18.4 percent; it was 19.8 percent a year ago.

The overall sale-topper was Hip No. 1254, a daughter of Not This Time consigned by Top Line Sales LLC, Agent, sold to Gary Young for $1.35 million to top the sale's second session. The bay filly, whose quarter in :20 1/5 was the sale's fastest at the distance, is out of graded stakes winner Sheza Smoke Show, by Wilko, a daughter of stakes winner Avery Hall.

Next on the OBS agenda is the July Sale of 2-Year-Olds and Horses of Racing Age, rescheduled from its June dates and now set for July 14 -16. The under tack show is scheduled for July 6 -11.
