Two-Time Graded Winner Kanthaka Retired

West Point Thoroughbreds' Kanthaka (Jimmy Creed–Sliced Bread, by Noonmark), a dual graded-stakes winner on dirt and Grade I placed on turf, has been retired. According to a tweet from the New Jersey-based partnership, John H. Haines, a partner in the 6-year-old gelding, adopted Kanthaka and moved him to a ranch in Oregon, where he arrived Sunday.

A $140,000 purchase out of the 2017 Barretts March Sale, Kanthaka was at first based in California with trainer Jerry Hollendorfer, for whom he won the GII San Vicente S. and GIII Laz Barrera S., both at seven furlongs, in 2018. Placed three times at the graded level at four, including a third when trying the turf for the first time in the GIII Daytona S. in 2019, Kanthaka was sidelined for better than a year and made his return to action in the 2020 GI Jaipur S., his first start for trainer Graham Motion. Sent off at 16-1, the chestnut made a run to the lead inside the final furlong, only to be caught late by Oleksandra (Aus) (Animal Kingdom).

Winless in three trips to the post this term, Kanthaka retires with three wins from 17 starts and earnings of $456,635.

Breeders’ Cup Berth On the Line in Runhappy Turf Sprint

A full field of 12 and three also-eligibles have been entered for Saturday’s GIII Runhappy Turf Sprint at Kentucky Downs, a ‘Win and You’re In’ qualifier for the GI Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint at Keeneland Nov. 7. The six-furlong dash will offer up one of the afternoon’s toughest handicapping challenges to boot.

Totally Boss (Street Boss) pounced from just off the pace to scoop this valuable prize by 1 1/4 lengths last year, then lost all chance when steadied three furlongs from home in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint and finished 10th. A troubled eighth in a May 29 Churchill allowance he was bound to need in the first place, the bay completed a Rusty Arnold 1-2 in the GII Shakertown S. at Keeneland, dropping a head decision to Leinster (Majestic Warrior) while finishing a neck ahead of Bound For Nowhere (The Factor).

The latter makes just the 15th start of his career and second at Kentucky Downs, where he annexed the 2018 Tourist Mile. A very impressive winner of a seven-furlong Belmont allowance last October, the 6-year-old entire failed by a head in the GIII San Simeon S. at Santa Anita, skipped the trip to Royal Ascot he’d made each of the last three seasons and instead ran a cracking race in the Shakertown.

Kanthaka (Jimmy Creed) can improve in his second start off a 13-month absence. The chestnut was set what appeared to be a pretty tall task in returning to action in the GI Jaipur S. on the Belmont S. undercard, but he came to win the race at the eighth pole, only to be run down by the talented Oleksandra (Aus) (Animal Kingdom).

Stubbins (Morning Line), a close fourth in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint, was a troubled third in the May 23 GIII Daytona S. at Santa Anita and was right on a sizzling pace in the Jaipur before weakening to fourth. He handled this course nicely when runner-up in last year’s GIII Franklin-Stamps S.

Imprimis (Broken Vow) was 2 3/4 lengths behind Totally Boss in fourth in this event last year and was across the line first in the GIII Troy S. first off a nine-month layoff, only to be controversially disqualified to third.

Australian-Bred Oleksandra Flies Late, Defeats Males In Jaipur

Team Valor International's Australian-bred mare Oleksandra made a last-to-first rally in the final quarter mile under Joel Rosario to beat males in Saturday's Grade 1 Jaipur Stakes, overtaking longshot Kanthaka in the final strides of the Win and You're In” Breeders' Cup Challenge Series race for the Turf Sprint division.

Kanthaka, who opened a lead in mid-stretch, held second, with Texas Wedge third and Stubbins fourth in the field of eight older runners.

Trained by Hall of Famer Neil Drysdale, Oleksandra covered six furlongs on firm turf in 1:06.80 and paid $6.50 to win.

Oleksandra is a 6-year-old mare by Animal Kingdom, who won the Kentucky Derby and Dubai World Cup for Team Valor. She was bred in Australia by her owner and produced from the Caesura mare, Alexandra Rose.

Pure Sensation, the 2016 Jaipur winner making his fourth appearance in the race as a 9-year-old, broke slowly and rushed to the front early, setting fractions of :21.33 and :43.62 for the opening half mile. Stubbins, in close pursuit, moved to the lead at the top of the stretch but after five furlongs in :55.10 was overtaken by Kanthaka.

Oleksandra was last as the field rounded the final turn, swung wide and overtook Kanthaka nearing the wire.
