Kanderel Gets Second Win In Row In Siren Lure

With a new lease on life at age four, the Richard Mandella-trained Kanderel rallied from last to take Saturday's $75,000 Siren Lure Stakes at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, Calif., his second win in a row over the course. Ridden by Juan Hernandez, Kanderel got 6½ furlongs on turf in 1:14.98.

Breaking from the rail, Kanderel was about six lengths off dueling leaders Texas Wedge and Tilted Towers heading to the far turn and had nearly five lengths to make up while wide-out with a furlong to run.

“I broke from the inside, number one post and Mr. Mandella told me to ride the horse like last time,” said Hernandez. “My horse, he loves to come from behind. I just broke, the horse was comfortable being last…I was saving ground and at the (top of) the stretch, I decided to go outside and make my run. My horse helped me a lot and he responded really well.

“I rode this horse (for the) first time at Golden Gate (winning a one-mile turf stakes on June 20, 2020) and he looked like he had a lot of talent…I think when they gelded him (Oct. 1, 2020), when he came back, he was a different horse. You could feel when you ask him, he responds a lot better than before.”

A three-quarter-length second condition allowance winner at 6½ furlongs on turf May 9, Kanderel was off at 4-1 in a field of seven 3-year-olds and up and paid $10.60, $5.20, and $3.20.

A 4-year-old gelding by Candy Ride, out of the Storm Cat mare Stormica, Kanderel is owned by his breeders, Wertheimer and Frere. With the Siren Lure being his second stakes victory, Kanderel is now 13-4-1-0 overall and with the winner's share of $48,360, he increased his earnings to $195,982. His owner/breeder is Wertheimer & Frere.

“We gelded him and it took a little while for it to work,” said Mandella. “He has now settled in to being with a harder crowd. We also shortened him up and he's doing better than he did running long…I was hoping he was good enough to catch these, and he did! He ran an even better race than he did the last time.”

Ridden by Joe Bravo, French-bred Commander was fourth turning for home and ran a game second, finishing a neck in front of favored Chasin Munny. Off at 5-1, Commander paid $5.60 and $3.40.

Off as the 6-5 favorite with Flavien Prat up, Chasin Munny was fifth at the top of the lane and paid $2.20 to show while finishing one length in front of Wound Tight. Fractions on the race were 22.21, 45.96, and 1:08.20.

Trainer Richard Mandella saw improvement in Kanderel. “We gelded him, and it took a little while for it to work. He has now settled in to being with a harder crowd. We also shortened him up and he's doing better than he did running long.

“He was the better horse, and there were some pretty good horses. I was hoping he was good enough to catch these, and he did! He ran an even better race than he did the last time.”

Smooth Like Strait Returns in LaJolla

Cannon Thoroughbreds homebred Smooth Like Strait (Midnight Lute), winner of last year’s GIII Cecil B. DeMille S. during this track’s Bing Crosby meeting last December, returns to the seaside oval as the likely favorite in Sunday’s GII LaJolla H. The race is the middle leg of Del Mar’s 3-year-old turf series which concludes with the GII Del Mar Derby over nine furlongs Sept. 6.

Disappointing when no better than fourth as the 13-10 favorite in the Eddie Logan S. at Santa Anita Dec. 29, the bay colt was a pacesetting runner-up to Hariboux (GB) (Havana Gold {Ire}) in the Feb. 29 Pasadena S. The form of that race was franked when Hariboux doubled up in the Cinema S. in June, while Smooth Like Strait took his show to Churchill for a handy success in the May 23 War Chant S. Third home that day was Field Pass (Lemon Drop Kid), who has since added a pair of black-type scores, including Keeneland’s GIII Transylvania S. July 12.

Smooth Like Strait carries top weight of 124 pounds, as does Eclipse Award-winning juvenile Storm the Court (Court Vision), who makes his turf debut in the LaJolla. On the fringes on the Triple Crown trail this season, the bay was third to Authentic (Into Mischief) in the GII San Felipe S. in March and filled the same spot behind Dean Martini (Cairo Prince) when last seen in the GIII Ohio Derby June 27. He is bred to handle this surface switch, as his sire was the upset winner of the GI Breeders’ Cup Mile, while his dam sire Tejano Run–perhaps best known for his runner-up effort in the 1995 GI Kentucky Derby–defeated the likes of Sandpit (Brz) (Baynoun {Ire}) in the GIII Fort Harrod S. at Keeneland on the grass the following season. Storm the Court breezed five furlongs on the turf at Del Mar July 26 in an easy 1:02 flat around the dogs in the company of his Grade III-placed stablemate Royal Act (American Pharoah).

Kanderel (Candy Ride {Arg}), bred on the cross over Storm Cat responsible for the likes of Horse of the Year Gun Runner and champion Shared Belief, among others, defeated Ajourneytofreedom (Hard Spun) by a head in the June 13 Alcatraz S. at Golden Gate, but proved he could class up here with a solid runner-up effort to the very talented Hit the Road (More Than Ready) in the restricted Oceanside S. over a mile July 10.

Mandella Ships Kanderel North To Win Alcatraz Stakes At Golden Gate

Kanderel shipped north from his home base at Santa Anita Park in Southern California and won Saturday's feature race at Golden Gate Fields in Albany, Calilf., the $75,000 Alcatraz Stakes for 3-year-olds on turf.

Trained by Richard Mandella, Kanderel stalked the pace and produced a strong closing late kick, taking the lead in mid-stretch before outfinishing runner-up Ajourneytofreedom for the victory. Kanderel finished a head in front of the aforementioned foe and was two lengths clear of multiple Golden Gate Fields stakes winner and Alcatraz third-place finisher Bettor Trip Nick. Governance, Mylittlerunaway, Darnquick and Zimba Warrior completed the order of finish. Kanderel stopped the clock for one mile in 1:36.82 on a firm course.

A colt by Candy Ride, Kanderel was bred in Kentucky by his owners, Wertheimer and Frere. The dam of Kanderel, the Storm Cat mare Stormica, won the Richmond Handicap on the Golden Gate Fields grass course in 2005. With the Alcatraz Stakes victory in the bag, Kanderel improved his lifetime record to 2 wins from 6 starts with career earnings of $79,622.

Kanderel paid $4.60 to win, $3.40 to place and $2.60 to show. Ajourneytofreedom paid $10.20 to place and $2.60 to show while Bettor Trip Nick paid $3.60 to show.

The final race card of the 2020 Winter/Spring meet at Golden Gate Fields takes place on Sunday afternoon. First post on the 11-race program is 12:15 PM.

Mandatory payouts in the Golden Pick Six jackpot wager, Rolling Super High Five and the Early and Late Pick 5's will be in play on Sunday, and the Late Pick 4 wager on Sunday has a guaranteed pool of $250,000. The Late Pick 4 goes as Races 8-11, with the first leg going being the feature race of the day and the marquee race of the Winter/Spring meet, the $250,000 Grade 3 San Francisco Mile for older routers. All four races in the Late Pick 4 sequence will be run on turf.
