Accelerate Gets First Stakes Winner At Woodbine

Having broken his maiden on this same surface and distance Oct. 2 with a 71 Beyer Speed Figure, Hal returned Saturday to Woodbine as the 2-1 second choice–a far cry from his 10-1 morning-line odds. Much as he did Oct. 2, Hal tracked off the pace inside from mid pack before shifting out to the clear as the field passed the quarter pole. He loomed outside of pacesetter Ticker Tape Home and the pair bobbed heads down the lane with Hal gaining only minimal separation on the wire for the win.

The first stakes winner for his freshman sire (by Lookin At Lucky), Hal is his dam's only surviving offspring. Purely a Dream lost a foal last year by Game Winner and was bred to Essential Quality for next season. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by TVG.

Woodbine’s Five Furlongs With Justin Stein: The Marvel Universe And Reality TV

Each week until opening day of the 2022 Woodbine Thoroughbred meet, a familiar name in the sport will be in the spotlight, answering some fun, offbeat questions, giving readers a unique perspective into their personality.

Justin Stein began his riding career in his native British Columbia in 2004, recording his first career win on Aug. 28 at Hastings Park, and by the next year had become the track's leading rider with 148 wins. Stein moved to Woodbine full-time in 2006 and finished his first season in Ontario with 109 wins, good for fourth in the jockey standings. In 2012, Stein won the Queen's Plate with Strait of Dover. Three years later he won the Woodbine Oaks with 66-1 shot Academic, who went on to defeat males with Stein aboard in the Grade 3 Canadian Derby at Northlands and the G3 B.C. Derby at Hastings. Stein retired in 2016, but the man who has a zest for the great outdoors returned to race-riding at Woodbine in 2019 and has excelled, winning his first G1 with Starship Jubilee in the 2020 Woodbine Mile while finishing atop the Woodbine standings in earnings and second in races won. As of Jan. 1, Stein has 1,287 career wins, including 87 stakes scores.

You get to star on a reality show. Which one is it and why?

Mantracker, for sure. Well, you're outdoors, in the bush, in the woods, and I think he would be a good nemesis. He'd definitely be a worthy opponent. I think I could get the better of him. He wouldn't catch me.”

Design your own jockey silks.

“I would want them to be simple. The colours would be navy blue with either gold or yellow, something like that. I don't have anything for a symbol. I haven't gone that far in my mind yet.”

You get to be a Marvel character. Who do you choose?

“We just watched one, Venom. I like those movies. So, I guess I wouldn't mind being him for a day. I also think the Avengers series is good and so is Justice League. They're very entertaining. I have a few favourite movies that I've watched a lot of times. The Hurt Locker is one. I've watched that over and over. I've also watched Rush plenty of times as well. That's a great movie about Formula One. It's very similar to being a jockey.”

Which racetrack would you like to ride at, one you've never been to before?

“That's a good question. Keeneland would come to mind, and I've always wanted to ride at Santa Anita too. I guess because I grew up on the west coast and Santa Anita was the big racetrack, it would be nice to get a chance to ride there. It's also super pretty too.”

Where would you set up a farm?

I would go with somewhere in Ontario. I'd find a good location to grow some crops. I'd have horses, dogs, maybe some chickens, a pig and a Highland Cow, maybe a llama. Just look for us [along with his wife, Jenn] in our rubber boots. We'll be out there in the barnyard.”

Silent Causeway Gives Trainer Krasauskaite First Stakes Victory In La Prevoyante

Laura Krasauskaite earned her first training stakes win courtesy of Silent Causeway in Saturday's $100,800 La Prevoyante Stakes at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, Ontario.

After some early drama in the 1 1/16-mile main track event for Ontario-sired fillies, 3-year-olds and upward, Silent Causeway was full of run late to deliver herself and her trainer-owner a milestone victory.

Sent off as the 9-2 third choice in the field of 10, Silent Causeway was at the back of the pack into the first turn when some jostling between two rivals required some quick maneuvering from jockey Justin Stein, aboard the daughter of Silent Name (JPN)-Good Religion.

It was Silver Dahlia and Summer Sunday, along with a host of others, who tussled for the early lead, with the former holding a head advantage over the latter through an opening quarter-mile timed in :24.23, with Silent Causeway sitting last.

Summer Sunday, the multiple stakes-winning champion contesting her final race before heading to Ireland to become a broodmare, then took over the top spot and guided her rivals through a half-mile in :47.72, as Silent Causeway moved into the ninth spot.

November Fog, the slight 2-1 choice, engaged Summer Sunday around the turn for home and soon struck front while Stein had his charge rolling down the lane.

Fourth and gaining at the stretch call in 1:38.59, Silent Causeway, runner-up in last year's Algoma Stakes, went on to notch a two-length victory in a time of 1:45.62. November Fog was second, and Golden Vision was third. Summer Sunday was fifth.

“Going into the first turn, there was a little bit of trouble for a horse in front of me,” started Stein. “It almost unseated the rider and I had to kind of anticipate maybe riding around a spill, but we adjusted and worked out a trip from there.”

There was no drama or doubt as to the winner in the latter stages of the La Prevoyante.

“She's got a lot of talent and a lot of heart,” said Stein. “When she comes over, she's happy. She's really effective. She shows up every time.”

Krasauskaite was understandably elated to record her first stakes win.

“This is amazing… I'm still shaking. I can't believe that I won a stakes race. It was so close last year, so close, but this year we finally did it. Closing the season with a stakes win is an amazing feeling.”

The multiple stakes placed conditioner wasn't concerned with the ground Silent Causeway, bred by Michael Deegan, had to make up.

“I was very positive. Looking at her and seeing how she runs, I knew we'd be coming.”

Silent Causeway, now 3-5-1 from 15 starts, paid $11.50 for the win.

Munnyfor Ro Best In Ontario Damsel At Woodbine

In Sunday stakes action at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, Ontario, Munnyfor Ro, ridden by Justin Stein, took the $142,500 Ontario Damsel for three-year-old fillies, contested at 1 1/16 miles over the Tapeta.

After slow opening splits of :25.59 and :50.85, the tempo began to pick up down the lane, as 8-5 choice Munnyfor Ro, fourth and gaining steadily at the stretch call, rallied impressively to win by a length in a time of 1:45.36. Oyster Box was second and Gold for Kitten was third.

“I expected a little more pace, but I was in a good spot,” said Stein, who now has 12 stakes scores on the campaign. “She was sitting comfortably in behind the slower pace and we were in the right spot for those fractions. When I called on her, she was there.  She gave me everything.”

Owned by Raroma Stable and trained by Kevin Attard, the daughter of Munnings launched her career last October at Woodbine, finishing eighth in her debut. She broke her maiden in her fifth race, this April at Keeneland.

Now 4-2-2 from 11 starts, the chestnut, bred by Daybar, LTD., has had a banner 2021 season, highlighted by three stakes scores, including the Woodbine Oaks Presented by Budweiser and the Wonder Where. She was fourth to Safe Conduct in the Queen's Plate.

“She's done everything we've asked and now she's going to get a deserved break and some sunshine on her back and have a chance to kind of drop her head and eat some grass in the south,” said Attard, who has eight stakes victories in 2021.

Munnyfor Ro paid $5.30 for the Ontario Damsel win.
