Justify Filly Goes Two-For-Two With Chantilly Triumph

Prime Equestrian's €150,000 Arqana August graduate Secretive (Fr) (Justify–Media Mischief, by Into Mischief) backed up a debut success at Deauville last November with a comfortable three-length tally on sophomore return in Monday's Prix du Chateau over one mile at Chantilly. The daughter of $550,000 Keeneland November mare Media Mischief (Into Mischief) is entered in both May 14 G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches and June 18 G1 Prix de Diane, with trainer Yann Barberot stating the former is on the agenda after taking in one more run next month.

SECRETIVE (FR) (f, 3, Justify–Media Mischief, by Into Mischief), a €150,000 Arqana August yearling who accounted for a trio of subsequent winners when annexing her Nov. 29 unveiling over 7 1/2 furlongs at Deauville in her only prior start, was swiftly into stride and accepted a tow in a comfortable second for most of this sophomore bow. Inching ahead at the quarter-mile pole, the 1-2 favourite was shaken up passing the furlong marker and kept on impressively under mild coaxing in the closing stages to easily defeat Dark Zel (Fr) (Zelzal {Fr}) by three lengths. “I am delighted to see her win so nicely as she is one of my best fillies at home,” reflected trainer Yann Barberot. “The form of her first race is very strong and she had come to hand nicely this last week, but she is not yet at her peak and will come on for that. The plan is one more start in April before going for the [May 14 G1] Poule d'Essai des Pouliches [at ParisLongchamp].” Secretive, who also boasts an engagement in this track's June 18 G1 Prix de Diane, is the second foal and scorer produced by a daughter of GII Buena Vista H. and G3 Prix du Bois winner Media Nox (GB) (Lycius), herself kin to three stakes performers headed by MGSW G2 Prix de Malleret victrix Bonash (GB) (Rainbow Quest). Media Nox also threw three pattern-race winners, headed by G1 Prix de Diane and G1 Prix du Moulin heroine Nebraska Tornado (Storm Cat), and her descendants feature last term's G1 Irish Derby victor Westover (GB) (Frankel {GB}). The February-foaled bay's dam Media Mischief was a lucrative proposition in the sales ring and changed hands for 250,000gns at Tattersalls' 2017 December Mares and $450,000 at Keeneland's 2019 January Mixed sale. She was also a $475,000 RNA at the 2018 Keeneland November Foals and Mares sale. China Horse Club International forked out $550,000 for her, carrying Secretive, at the following year's fixture while her 2019 filly Vaccine Of Hope (Pioneerof the Nile), herself a $260,000 Keeneland September graduate, notched two wins in 2022. Concinnous has also produced SW & GSP Saintly Joan (Northern Afleet). Justdoitalready fired a bullet two works back (five furlongs in 1:02) and jockey Jesus Lopez Castanon gets the call.

Breaking from along the inside, Payout Ratio (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) is a first-time starter for the trainer/owner pair of Klaravich Stables and Chad Brown. Out of MSW & MGSP Polly's Mark (Ire), she traces back to G1 Sagitta One Thousand Guineas victor Ameerat (GB) (Mark of Esteem {Ire}). TJCIS PPS

A Triple Crown-nominated colt, ESCALATION (Violence) brought a final bid of $550,000 as a yearling two years back at Keeneland September for Centennial Farms. Out of a half-sister to GSW Shawklit Mint (Air Forbes One), this is the extended family of MGSW Crafty Shaw (Crafty Prospector) and SW & MGSP Her She Kisses (Dehere) as well as GISP Shawklit Won (Air Forbes Won). His dam is a half to SW & MGSP Sahool (GB) (Unfuwain) who produced GSW Laraaib (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}). GARMISCH (c, 3, Uncle Mo–Fiduicia, by Medaglia d'Oro) is the second foal to race out of this dam, a Japanese stakes-winner and Group 3-placed turf sprinter whose first produce, Gran Aplauso (Gun Runner), was victorious on debut in a 1200-meter turf maiden in the summer of 2021. Fiducia is a daughter of Japanese champion older mare Believe (Jpn) (Sunday Silence), who defeated the boys in the Takamatsunomiya Kinen and Sprinters S. when they were contested as listed races and went on to produce Gendarme (Kitten's Joy), upset winner of the 2022 G1 Sprinters' S., as well as MSW & G1SP Faridat (Kingmambo). BOLD ZONE (c, 3, Mendelssohn–Halo Dolly, by Popular), a $40,000 Keeneland September yearling turned $280,000 OBS March breezer, was let go at debut odds of 8-1 going this trip at Nakayama back in January and overcame a wide trip to draw clear by 3 1/2 lengths (video, SC 7). The Feb. 12 foal is one of two winners from two out of the mare, winner of the GII Yellow Ribbon S. and GIII Wilshire H. and also the dam of GIII San Simeon S. hero Barraza, a son of Mendelssohn's all-conquering half-brother Into Mischief. ANGE FIELD (JPN) (f, 3, Justify–Not Now Carolyn, by Tapit) is out of a winning daughter of Eclipse Award, Grade I and inaugural Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint winner Maryfield (Elusive Quality), who cost Shimokobe Farm $140,000 with this filly in utero at the 2019 Keeneland November Sale. Not Now Carolyn, a half-sister to Irish Group 2-placed Radio Silence (War Front), was exported to Japan and the filly–foaled Apr. 16, 2020–fetched ¥80 million ($745,639) at that year's JRHA Select Sale. This is also the family of recent GII Risen Star S. runner-up Sun Thunder (Into Mischief). B-Shimokobe Farm

Seven-Figure Justify Colt Debuts on FOY Undercard

Mrs. John Magnier, Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith, Westerberg and Gandharvi LLC's ILLUSTRATED (Justify) was led out unsold when bidding stalled out at $290,000 at the 2021 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale. The blaze-faced bay made the decision to retain him look that much better when selling for $1.1 million at last year's Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream Sale after breezing an eighth of a mile in :10 flat despite jumping the shadows of the sixteenth pole and of floodlights around the area of the finish line. His GI Spinaway S.-winning dam Appealing Zophie (Successful Appeal) was purchased by My Meadowview for $1.1 million at the 2007 Fasig-Tipton November Sale and went on to produce GI Belmont S. hero and young stallion Tapwrit (Tapit), MGSW & GISP Ride a Comet (Candy Ride {Arg})–who carried the silks of Len Riggio's operation–and SW & 'TDN Rising Star' Inject (Frosted). Carrying a full-sister to Tapwrit, Appealing Zophie was hammered down to Barronstown Stud for $1.2 million at FTKNOV in 2018. Having amassed a worktab dotted with bullet drills, Illustrated is the 5-2 favorite from gate 10 and has the services of Luis Saez. Illustrated will be opposed by LNJ Foxwoods' Scotland (Good Magic), a daughter of Grade III winner and Grade I-placed Gemswick Park (Speightstown), who was acquired for $675,000 on behalf of the Roth family at the 2013 Fasig-Tipton February Sale. RULE BREAKER (Into Mischief) was one of four horses–two by this sire–to fetch $1 million or better at last year's OBS March Sale after hammering for that price to Spendthrift, the BSW/Crow Colts' Group and Broman after a :10 1/5 breeze. The New York bred is the latest foal to the races for the Bromans' multiple Grade I winner Artemis Agrotera (Fusaichi Pegasus), whose son Chestertown (Tapit) topped the 2019 March Sale on a bid of $2 million. Rule Breaker's second dam is SW & MGSP Indy Glory (A.P. Indy), a full-sister to Stephen Got Even. TJCIS PPs
