New York-Bred Niko’s Dream Rallies Wide For My Charmer Score At Gulfstream

Sackatoga Stable's Niko's Dream, placed in three previous stakes over the past two years, became a stakes winner for the first time with a 13-1 upset of the $75,000 My Charmer Saturday at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla.

Jockey Junior Alvarado, riding for trainer Barclay Tagg, settled the 4-year-old Central Banker filly Niko's Dream alone in fifth as Piedi Bianchi ran a quarter-mile in 23.41 seconds and a half in 46.79 pressed by 2019 Tropical Park Oaks winner Our Bay B Ruth with 3-2 favorite Lady Lawyer and 35-1 long shot Great Sister Diane also in the top group.

Niko's Dream found herself surrounded by Grade 3-placed Art of Almost to the inside and Tuned on her right midway on the far turn when she kicked into high gear. Steered to the far outside by Alvarado, Niko's Dream collared Art of Almost at the top of the stretch and edged clear with plenty left to hold off a late bid from Tuned. The winning time was 1:41.82 for 1 1/16 miles over the good turf.

“I had a great trip. The whole way around, I was happy where I was,” Alvarado said. “I made my move when I wanted to and had to make sure she was in the clear on the outside. I've been riding her for a while, so I knew she likes to make a nice move on the outside. It worked out perfect today.”

Tuned beat Art of Almost for second, followed by Piedi Bianchi, Our Bay B Ruth, Lady Lawyer and Great Sister Diane.

Hold The Salsa, It’s Gravy Combine For Foodie Exacta In NYSS Great White Way

Hold the Salsa ran down Market Alert in the final furlong and fended off It's Gravy's late bid from the outside for a victory by a neck in Sunday's $250,000 New York Stallion Stakes Series Great White Way in the final stakes of the 18-day fall meet at Aqueduct Racetrack in Ozone Park, N.Y.

Owned, bred and trained by Richard Lugovich, Hold the Salsa registered his second stakes win in three attempts, adding to his victory in the Bertram F. Bongard on October 2 at Belmont going seven furlongs.

Running the same one-turn distance in the 36th running of the Great White Way for eligible New York-sired juveniles, Hold the Salsa was kept off the speed by jockey Junior Alvarado as The King Cheek led the 11-horse field through the opening quarter-mile in 22.80 seconds on the fast main track.

Market Alert took the lead with the half-mile in 46.45 with the favorite Dreamer's Disease, who was rushed into contention after a slow start, in close pursuit. Out of the turn, Market Alert was kept to the inside by Jose Lezcano, fending off a tiring Dreamer's Disease who took back. But Alvarado set down Hold the Salsa from the outside, where he surged past Market Alert and pressed on as It's Gravy made his push from the outside.

Hold the Salsa prevailed in hitting the wire in 1:25.70, registering his third win in six career starts.

“I was pretty confident coming into today. He had already won going seven furlongs,” Lugovich said. “He's a pretty hard horse to gauge because he's very quiet. Coming into the winner's circle, he doesn't look like he has much energy, but he's a very good horse. He's just quiet.”

Off at 5-1, the Hold Me Back colt returned $12.40 on a $2 win bet. The New York-bred more than doubled his career earnings to $237,775.

“When he's good, he takes me there,” said Alvarado, who will head to Gulfstream to ride in the winter. “By the five-sixteenths, I was very happy with where he was and the way he was traveling. I knew he was going to have a little something left at the end. He showed up today. I'm happy to have won the last stakes of the meet.”

Lugovich said he might try Hold the Salsa on turf in his sophomore campaign.

“It's interesting because if you look at his breeding, he's probably a mile-and-a-quarter horse on the grass,” he said. “He's only a 2-year-old, so he could see that eventually. I'll see what we can do with him next year and see how he comes up. I'm in no rush with him.”

It's Gravy, trained by Kelly Breen, maintained his maiden status but has run in the money in all four of his starts, moving to 0-2-2 after besting Market Alert by one length.

Windy Nations, Prospect Mountain, Horn of Plenty, Dreamer's Disease, The King Cheek New York One, Jacoba and Jack's American Pie completed the order of finsh. Uno was scratched.

Thoroughbred action continues at Aqueduct Racetrack for the 56-day winter meet that begins Thursday, December 10 and runs through Sunday, March 28. In total, 42 stakes worth $4.57 million in purses will be offered, with live racing generally conducted Thursday through Sunday until the end of February with a holiday break set for December  24 – 27 and the addition of special Monday cards on January 18 for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and February 15 for Presidents' Day.

Four Stakes Wins Earn Junior Alvarado Jockey Of The Week Title

Four stakes wins over the Thanksgiving weekend led to Junior Alvarado named as Jockey of the Week for Nov. 23 through Nov. 29. The award, which is voted on by a panel of racing experts, is for jockeys who are members of the Jockeys' Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 active riders in the United States as well as retired and permanently disabled jockeys.

With no racing scheduled on Thanksgiving Day, Alvarado made the most of the three days of racing at Aqueduct with mounts in 10 stakes races. On Friday, Alvarado scored by a nose with City Man for trainer Christophe Clement in the Gio Ponti over a stubborn Bodecream.

“Every time Christophe Clement brings a horse over, it doesn't matter the odds, they always seem to be fighting to win the race,” Alvarado said.

Also on the Friday card, Alvarado was aboard Feel Glorious, again for Christophe Clement, winning the Forever Together by three-quarters of a length.

“I had the best filly,” said Alvarado. “Turning for home, I put her in the clear to the outside and when she switched leads, she started picking it up.”

Fresh off a successful Friday, Alvarado had the mount on Forza Di Oro for trainer Bill Mott in the Grade 3 Discovery on Saturday. Around the far turn, Alvarado guided Forza Di Oro through an opening and drew off by 3-3/4 lengths.

“When he switches leads like he did today, he gives that next gear, Alvarado said.

On Sunday, trainer Bill Mott gave a leg up to Alvarado in the Tepin aboard Lovestruck who repelled a threat by Invincible Gal to hit the wire in 1:47.14.

“We were expecting the kind of run from her that we saw today,” said Alvarado. “There's still room for her to improve.”

As the leading rider by stakes wins, Alvarado posted a 22.72 percent win rate while in-the-money on 54.54 percent of his mounts. With five wins, three seconds and four thirds from 22 mounts, his purse earnings totaled $383,602.

Alvarado out-polled Rafael Bejarano who was the leading jockey by purse earnings, Irad Ortiz, Jr. who won three stakes races at Del Mar, Joel Rosario who won two stakes races at Del Mar and Tim Thornton who was the leading jockey by total wins with 10.

Half-Sister To Scat Daddy, Lovestruck Stays Undefeated In Tepin Stakes

Godolphin Stable's Lovestruck, the half-sister to the late stallion Scat Daddy, won her first stakes appearance in similar fashion to her career debut on Sunday. The 2-year-old filly stayed off the pace before a strong stretch-drive kick to post a one-length victory in the $100,000 Tepin Stakes at Aqueduct Racetrack.

The Kentucky homebred was a one-length winner going 1 1/16 miles over the firm inner turf at Saratoga Race Course on Sept. 7. Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott elevated the Tapit filly to stakes company for her second start, where she again won at the same distance, this time over an inner turf course rated good.

Lovestruck broke sharp under jockey Junior Alvarado from post two, being forwardly placed in third position as 20-1 longshot Big Time Lady led the eight-horse field through the opening quarter-mile in 24.05 seconds, the half in 50.50 and three-quarters in 1:16.21.

Turning for home, Big Time Lady was kept inside by jockey Eric Cancel, but Lovestruck pressed on and overtook the pacesetter from the outside. Invincible Gal, piloted by Jose Ortiz, made a strong bid near the rail, but Alvarado set down Lovestruck to repel the threat and hit the wire in 1:47.14.

A stewards' inquiry focused on bumping at the head of the stretch between Big Time Lady and Lovestruck resulted in no change to the order of finish.

“She's been ready for quite a while,” Alvarado said. “We were expecting the kind of run from her that we saw today. There's still room for her to improve. She's still a little bit green and when she got to the lead she was wandering around the track, which is fine. When she puts it all together, we'll get a little more from her.”

Off as the even-money favorite, Lovestruck returned $4.20 on a $2 win wager. She more than doubled her career earnings to $94,600.

“I knew she was going to be sharp, but I like to teach them to relax behind horses and have a nice finish,” Alvarado said. “I didn't want to just let her go. Even though it was a slow pace, I knew I was close enough that she wouldn't have too much to do at the end.”

Invincible Gal, fresh off an 11th-place finish in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf on Nov. 6 at Keeneland, outkicked Big Time Lady by 1 ½ lengths for second. The Graham Motion trainee has run second in three of her four stakes starts, adding to her runner-up efforts in the Sorority in September at Monmouth Park and the Selima on Preakness Day, Oct. 3, at Pimlico.

“I had a beautiful trip. I found an opening on the inside in the stretch and I thought I had a shot to get there but the winner, she showed up,” Ortiz said. “She's the real deal.”

Island Treasure, Fifth Risk, Bravo Regina and Lexinator completed the order of finish. Thursday was pulled up and vanned off.

Frost Me was scratched, as were main-track only entrants Hit the Woah, Dollar Mountain and Malibu Curl.

Live racing resumes Thursday at Aqueduct with a nine-race card that features a 12:20 p.m. Eastern first post.
