Walsh: Extravagant Kid To Remain Overseas, Target July Cup

Following a strong third-place effort in the Group 1 King's Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot last week, trainer Brendan Walsh told TVG Insider News he plans to leave Extravagant Kid overseas to contest the G1 July Cup on Newmarket on July 10.

“He's come out of (the King's Stand) good so we're going to leave him there and take a shot at the July Cup,” Walsh told TVG Insider News. “He's there and he ran so well at Ascot, so another 3-4 weeks there, why not? He's in a nice environment and he seems to be doing well. And I think the timing would be good.”

Claimed by Walsh and DARRS, Inc. for $75,000 in January of 2018, the 8-year-old gelding has gotten better with age. Extravagant Kid earned his first Grade 1 victory earlier this year in Dubai's Al Quoz Sprint, and his overall record currently stands at 15-16-7 from 51 starts for earnings of $1,634,733.

Dream Of Dreams “Remarkably Well”

Dream Of Dreams (Ire) (Dream Ahead) exited his popular victory in last weekend's G1 Diamond Jubilee S. “remarkably well,” according to Bruce Raymond, racing manager to owner Saeed Suhail. The 7-year-old gelding was winning the Royal Ascot sprinting showpiece after finishing runner-up in the prior two renewals for trainer Sir Michael Stoute.

“We were delighted, and he's come out of the race very, very well,” Raymond said. “His owner was absolutely delighted; he wanted to know if he can keep the trophy so I said, 'no, you have to win it twice.' He just said, 'well, we'll do it next year then!'”

Raymond also praised Stoute's training performance.

“He looks straightforward but he's a horse that doesn't work with any other horses at all and exercises mostly on his own, not because he's crazy or anything, I just think it suits him better,” Raymond said. “I haven't seen him gallop, he just breezes on his own and to do it with a 7-year-old is good, to get him there in a top-class race without a prep run is pretty clever.”

Dream Of Dreams holds an entry for the July 11 G1 July Cup, but Raymond said the Aug. 8 G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest is more likely.

“I don't know [if he'll run in the July Cup] but I would doubt it, I'm just not sure about him going down the hill at Newmarket,” Raymond said. “Maybe the race in Deauville over six and a half furlongs [Prix Maurice de Gheest], we might step him up, there's only certain races we can go for when you've got to stick to a pattern.”

Although the Diamond Jubilee was a 'Win and You're In' qualifier for the GI Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint, Raymond said that is also unlikely.

“I personally think the horse would get a mile in America, but it hasn't been discussed, these are only just my thoughts,” he said. “I think he'd get the mile in America, I really do, because he stays the seven well at Newbury. The Breeders' Cup Sprint I think would be too sharp for him, they'd be gone.”

No July Cup For Campanelle

Stonestreet Stables's Campanelle (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}), the winner of last week's G1 Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot, will skip an intended start in the G1 July Cup on July 10 and instead ship back to trainer Wesley Ward's Keeneland base on Wednesday. Campanelle's new target is the G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest at Deauville, Ward confirmed.

“We're going for the Maurice de Gheest on Aug. 8, so we'll have plenty of time to get her back here tomorrow and get her ready and get her there a couple days before the race,” he said, noting that the 3-year-old filly came out of the Commonwealth Cup “beautifully.” Campanelle crossed the finish line a head behind Dragon Symbol (GB) (Cable Bay {GB}) at Royal Ascot, but was promoted to the win after stewards deemed she was significantly interfered with by Dragon Symbol, who drifted and carried her across the track in the closing stages. Campanelle was winning for the second time at the Royal meeting, having taken last year's G2 Queen Mary S.

Ward could have another European runner this summer in the form of last year's G2 Norfolk S. runner-up and GII Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint winner Golden Pal (Uncle Mo), who will make his first start since the Breeders' Cup during opening weekend at Saratoga and, if all goes well there, target the G1 Nunthorpe S. at York on Aug. 20.

Oxted To Defend July Cup Title

Oxted (GB) (Mayson {GB}) will prepare for a domestic campaign, including a defense of the G1 July Cup, after finishing seventh while trying dirt for the first time in the Riyadh Dirt Sprint last Saturday.

“It all happened a bit quick for him,” said trainer Roger Teal of Saturday's race. “He just never got to travel. Everything happened a million miles an hour and he was just taken out of his comfort zone a bit. The draw didn't help. It forced us to go a bit more forward than we wanted. I don't think I'd blame the surface. He moved well on the surface in the morning. I just think the style of dirt racing was probably a bit too fast and furious.”

Oxted kicked off a productive 2020 campaign in the G3 Abernant S., and Teal said the 5-year-old gelding could reappear there.

“We'll just regroup, let him get over his journey and we'll concentrate on our summer fixtures now,” he said. “We'll probably start off in the Abernant or the G2 Duke of York. Those two are possible starters for us. Then we've got Ascot and obviously the July Cup as the main target again.”
