Oct. 8 Insights: From New York to California, Big Name Debuts

A half-brother to the brilliant GISW Brilliant Speed (Dynaformer); SW & GSP Souper Speedy (Indian Charlie); and SP Bank (Bernardini), the Pletcher-trained chestnut comes into the race with a bullet move Sept. 27 over Belmont's training track–a five furlong work in a co-fastest minute flat. His dam Speed Succeeds is a half-sister to Canadian champion older mare GSW Serenading (A.P. Indy); that one's full-sister MSW & GISP Handpainted–herself dam of GSW Painting (Distorted Humor) and GSP Patena (Seeking the Gold); and the dams of Japanese runner GSW Touch Me Not (Jpn) and GISP Conquest Mo Money (Uncle Mo).

To the outside and carrying the colors of Juddmonte, Lambeth (Arrogate) goes to post from the barn of Bill Mott. Out of a half-sister to SW & G1SP Task Force (GB) (Frankel {GB}) and SW Elegant Verse (GB) (Galileo {Ire})–making her a daughter of European champion 2-year-old filly MG1SW Special Duty (GB)–Lambeth can also claim GI Breeders' Cup Mile victor Expert Eye (GB) (Acclamation {GB}) as a relation. Jumping from in between a West homebred and a Don Alberto one is C R K Stable's Shear Magic (Good Magic). The $350,000 OBSAPR pick up from this past spring has been sighted religiously on the work tab for conditioner John Shirreffs. His dam, a half-sister to GSP Bo Cruz (Creative Cause) and out of a half-sister to GI Preakness hero Cloud Computing (Maclean's Music), was a winner and has produced three others from as many to the races. This is the family of MG1SP Marino Marini.

The West runner American Hope (American Pharoah) is out of MGISW Room Service (More Than Ready), a half-sister to SW & MGSP Oscar Party (Dixie Union) and full-sibling to GSW Major Gain. Don Alberto's Citadino (Runhappy) hails from the family of champion 3-year-old filly MGISW Surfside and her half-brother, track record-setting GSW Irish Surf via second dam, champion 2-year-old filly MGISW Flanders. Gerry Dilger Equine Foundation Awards Pair Of Scholarships

The Gerry Dilger Equine Scholarship Foundation would like to express its gratitude and appreciation to all its supporters that have contributed to the charity that assists young people starting off in the bloodstock business.

Based in Lexington, Kentucky, the foundation commenced its activities just three years ago in memory of County Clare native Gerry Dilger whose Dromoland Farm specialized in successful sales pinhooks and an elite breeding operation with great partners that produced consecutive Kentucky Derby winners Nyquist (Uncle Mo) and Always Dreaming (Bodemeister). However, Gerry was equally renowned as a nurturer of young people who found their way to Dromoland and gained so much life and work experience. The foundation was established by the Dilger family and friends to continue his teaching for the next generation and in a short period of time has awarded eighteen scholarships and three bursaries to students from around the world. Our partner schools in Ireland include University College Dublin, University of Limerick, CAFRE, KIldalton College and the Irish National Stud.

We were delighted to recently announce that Luis Ettedgui and Grace Hamilton were awarded scholarships to the Irish National Stud. Luis, a Venezuelan native, and a graduate from the University of Kentucky's Equine Science and Management program has experience working at Stonerside, Juddmonte, with Brad Cox and is currently working in Australia with Godolphin. Grace, originally from South Carolina is a University of Kentucky senior majoring in Equine Science and Management and minoring in Business. She has worked in many areas of the business including Coldwater Farm, Blandford Stud, Godolphin at Jonabell Farm and Marette Farrell, agent.

The board was very encouraged this year with the quality of applications for its various programs and will be announcing soon other award winners including the recipients of the Kentucky Thoroughbred Farm Experience Scholarship. In a change of format for this particular scholarship, the awardees will be placed for one year with Springhouse Farm in Lexington and Hunter Valley Farm in Versailles.

The board also extends its thanks to all participants and organizers of the second foundation golf tournament which takes place Tuesday, Oct. 10 at Houston Oaks in Paris. Our first year was such a success that we will once again have a full turnout of twenty-nine teams of four. Further details of the charity's work and programs can be found here.

Champion Sprinter Elite Power To Retire To Juddmonte After Breeders’ Cup

Defending Eclipse Champion Elite Power (Curlin), winner of last year's GI Breeders' Cup Sprint, will take up stud duty upon retirement after defending his title at Santa Anita next month, Juddmonte Farm said in a press release Friday morning.

Bred by Alpha Delta Stables, the chestnut colt consigned by Lane's End was sold to Juddmonte for $900,000 at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale. Out of MGSW Broadway's Alibi (Vindication), his dam was runner-up in the GI Kentucky Oaks. Sold as a broodmare for $2.15 million, she hails from the family of champion 2-year-old filly Eliza (Mt. Livermore).

Elite Power's stakes debut came in the GII Vosburgh S. last year when he won by 5 3/4 lengths. After his win in the Breeders' Cup, his 2023 campaign started in Saudi Arabia where he annexed the GIII Riyadh Dirt Sprint. Back stateside for his next start, he won the GII True North S. and followed that up with a victory in the GI Vanderbilt H.

To date, the Juddmonte colorbearer has amassed earnings of $2,735,711.

Westover Retired With Injury Sustained in the Arc

Westover (GB) (Frankel {GB}), winner of the G1 Irish Derby and G1 Grand Prix de Saint Cloud, has been retired after sustaining a “career-ending injury” when finishing runner-up in Sunday's G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.

Announcing his retirement on Thursday, the colt's owner-breeder Juddmonte stated that stud plans for the 4-year-old would be announced at a later date.

Juddmonte's racing manager Barry Mahon said, “It's devastating news, unfortunately he suffered a career-ending injury on Sunday and he'll have to be retired. Long-term he'll be fine and he'll be okay for a stallion career, but we had such good days with him this year and last year, we had an exciting end to the season planned and we were all very excited about it. Unfortunately it's come to an end.

“We were looking at the Breeders' Cup and we actually only entered him in the Japan Cup on Tuesday. We were planning on doing a bit of travelling and seeing a bit of the world with him, but unfortunately that's not to be.”

A winner on debut at two, the Ralph Beckett-trained Westover came to greater prominence on his 3-year-old bow when winning the G3 Classic Trial at Sandown. An imposing son of Frankel and the Lear Fan mare Mirabilis, herself a stakes winner in both France and America, he went on to finish third behind Desert Crown (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) in last year's Derby before claiming his own Classic victory in the Irish equivalent at the Curragh.

Westover's career has also included a number of gallant runs in defeat: he was second in the G1 Dubai Sheema Classic to Japanese superstar Equinox (Jpn) (Kitasan Black {Jpn}) and was also runner-up to Emily Upjohn (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) in a memorable running of the G1 Coronation Cup at Epsom this June. He claimed his second Group 1 prize in France after that before adding another two admirable second-place finishes to his record when beaten a head by Hukum (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) in the G1 King George and Queen Elizabeth S. and, finally, on Sunday behind Ace Impact (Ire) (Cracksman {GB}) in the Arc.

Mahon added, “I'd say he'll be a top-class stallion. He's one of Frankel's best sons and, as we saw with Ace Impact, Frankel's sons are off to a flying start.

“He's been beautifully trained by Ralph, Rob Hornby has obviously built up a good association with him last year and this year, and Colin Keane was exquisite on him the day he won the Irish Derby. It's been a great story for a lot of people, none more so than Juddmonte. We're very lucky to have had him.”

A fourth-generation Juddmonte homebred, Westover is a full-brother to the Group 3 winner Monarchs Glen (GB), who was one of Frankel's earliest Royal Ascot winners in the Listed Wolferton S. Their dam is a half-sister to the G1 Prix de Diane and G1 Prix du Moulin winner Nebraska Tornado (Storm Cat) and to the G2 Prix Eugene Adam winner Burning Sun (Danzig).

Westover's trainer Ralph Beckett said, “I am very proud of the horse and what he has achieved, he gave his all every day at home and on the racecourse and we will all miss him.”
