Autumn Sale Begins At Park Paddocks

With the major yearling sales now in the rear-view mirror, the focus turns briefly to horses in training before the breeding stock sales, and Park Paddocks this week hosts the four-day Tattersalls Autumn Horses-in-Training Sale. One of the strongest indicators of the global nature of the racing industry, the Autumn Horses-in-Training Sale routinely sees participation from purchasers around the world, and its graduates keep them coming back by winning key races internationally. Salute The Soldier (Ger) (Sepoy {Aus}) was bought for 380,000gns in 2019 and he picked up Meydan's G3 Burj Nahaar five months later, and has hit even greater heights in 2021 with wins in the G1 Al Maktoum Challenge R3 and the G2 Al Maktoum Challenge R2.

Zaaki (GB) (Leroidesanimaux {Brz}) likewise provided a quick return on the 150,000gns that Blandford Bloodstock and trainer Annabel Neasham paid for him at last year's sale. He has won five group races in Australia this year, headed by the G1 Doomben Cup and G1 Underwood S.

The four-day sale includes drafts from leading trainers like Mark Johnston, Richard Hannon, Andrew Balding, Roger Varian, Jim Bolger, Joseph O'Brien, Dermot Weld and Henri-Francois Devin. In the continuation of its cutbacks, Shadwell brings 121 to the sale, including a handful of lightly raced 3-year-old rated 105 and above, and some promising 2-year-olds. Juddmonte has some unexposed 3-year-olds among its nine-strong draft, while Coolmore offers black-type performers such as the G1 St Leger third The Mediterranean (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) (lot 238) and the G1 Melbourne Cup second Tiger Moth (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) (lot 548).

Among the highlights of the catalogue are this year's dual German and Italian Group 3 winner Grocer Jack (Ger) (Oasis Dream {GB}) (lot 738), who was second in the G1 Grosser Dallmayr-Preis – Bayerisches Zuchtrennen in July. Like the listed-winning 4-year-old Praetorius (Ger) (Novellist {Ire}) (lot 739), he is offered by Ronald Rauscher.

Chipotle (GB) (Havana Gold {Ire}) has picked up four wins from nine starts for trainer Eve Johnson Houghton in 2021, including the Listed Windsor Castle S. at Royal Ascot, and the admirable 2-year-old is catalogued as (lot 1055). Another black-type juvenile on offer is Papa Don't Preach (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) (lot 600), second in the Listed Prix Yacowlef and fourth in the G2 Flying Childers S., while the dual winning and Timeform 95-rated 2-year-old Nero Tulip (GB) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}) (lot 364D) and the winning Timeform 87-rated Josies Kid (Ire) (Ardad {Ire}) (lot 1186B) also look to have upside.

Also catalogued is Ahmad Al Shaikh's 2021 G3 Chester Vase scorer Youth Spirit (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) (lot 1186A); last out G3 March S. victor Dancing King (Ire) (Free Eagle {Ire}) (lot 778); Lloyd Williams's Listed Her Majesty's Plate winner Master Of Reality (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) (lot 1186C); Cheveley Park Stud's listed-placed 3-year-old Fundamental (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}) (lot 1142); and Lady Bamford's Balmoral H. third Magical Morning (GB) (Muhaarar {GB}) (lot 1143).

Gosden: Contamination From Employee Caused Drug Positive

Trainer John Gosden has said that it was contamination “through an employee” that led to the ketamine positive returned by Juddmonte filly Franconia (GB) (Frankel {GB}) after her win in last June's Listed Abingdon Fillies' S. at Newbury. Gosden told a British Horseracing Authority disciplinary panel on Thursday that Franconia had been handled at the races that day by a stable worker who subsequently admitted to using ketamine recreationally. Franconia was disqualified from the win and Gosden was fined £500.

Speaking to BBC Radio 4's Today Programme on Friday morning, Gosden explained that the employee came forward when he realised he could have been responsible for the contamination.

“He was a rather vulnerable person who came to me–his life had somewhat imploded, and he'd been thrown out of a job as a very young chap,” the trainer said. “He came in, was working with us, and during the lockdown he probably got in the habit of messing around with this ketamine, which is obviously used as a drug that sends you into a trance state or something. Consequently, when he took this filly racing–although he cleaned himself properly, showered and his clothes were clean–he used to keep the stuff in his wallet in a little packet. There was none in there, but there was residual in there. Obviously, that little deposit in the wallet–he'd used his credit card, then he puts the bridle on the filly–can get very quickly into the system, from the [horse's] tongue and gums. This tiny trace, which is microscopic–like half-a-trillionth of a gram, measured in picograms with very sensitive equipment–was picked up in her urine. It didn't affect her performance, because obviously if you used a lot of ketamine it would send the horse into a trance state, and you can imagine what kind of terrible thing could happen. Ketamine is for anaesthetics in clinics. It's never in a racing stable, only in clinics.”

Gosden said the groom remains in his employ.

“He said it was his fault, and he explained the whole situation,” Gosden said. “He actually broke down in tears, as one would–not an easy thing to tell your employer. Because he was so honest, it solved the whole problem as to where this came from, because it was a complete mystery to us. He's still employed here, and to that extent he's getting on with life. His life hadn't been going too well before that, and it was difficult for him. But we're doing fine now.”

Franconia, meanwhile, remains a listed winner, having taken the Listed Lyric Fillies' S. in her next start.

Big Field Set for Raven Run

A wide-open field of 13 sophomore filly sprinters will line up for Saturday's GII Lexus Raven Run S. at Keeneland.

'TDN Rising Star' Souper Sensational (Curlin) enters in good form in her last three starts since receiving a freshening. A powerful winner of Belmont's GIII Victory Ride S. July 10, the Live Oak colorbearer followed with a second-place finish behind likely GI Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint second choice Bella Sofia (Awesome Patriot) in the GI Longines Test S. Aug. 7 and repeated that same position behind the streaking Cilla (California Chrome) after leading in the stretch as the 4-5 favorite in the GII Prioress S. back at the Spa Sept. 4.

Juddmonte homebred Obligatory (Curlin), drawn widest of all for Bill Mott here, is favored at 3-1 on the morning line. Minus a disappointing fifth after a slow start in the Test, the GII Eight Belles S. upsetter has strong second-place finishes going longer behind Search Results (Flatter) in the one-mile GI Acorn S. June 5 and Clairiere (Curlin) in the 1 1/16-mile GI Cotillion S. last time Sept. 25.

Mott will also saddle Godolphin homebred Caramel Swirl (Union Rags), a big-figure Saratoga allowance winner July 24 in her comebacker following a dull seventh in the Eight Belles. She was a disappointing fourth as the heavy favorite in the two-turn GIII Charles Town Oaks last time Aug. 27.
