Dubawi’s Agave Too Good For Listed Prix Rose de Mai Rivals

Juddmonte's hitherto unbeaten 3-year-old filly Agave (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) accounted for subsequent Listed Grand Criterium de Bordeaux victrix Singforthemoment (Ire) (No Nay Never) when breaking through over one mile contesting a Sept. 2 debutantes' heat at ParisLongchamp in her only prior start and lined up for this stakes bow as the 6-5 favourite. Employing patient tactics in rear until turning for home, the May 15 G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches and June 19 G1 Prix de Diane entry made smooth headway out wide to challenge with 300 metres remaining and quickened in style under mild coaxing in the closing stages to easily outclass Ondulee (Ire) (Adlerflug {Ger}) by three lengths for a career high.

“Agave looked a promising filly when she won first time out at ParisLongchamp last year and the form of that race has proved strong since,” said Juddmonte's on-course representative. “We're delighted with the win today and her jockey [Olivier Peslier] was also delighted with the performance. Andre Fabre will now discuss her future with Barry Mahon and the family and the [Apr. 2 G3] Prix Penelope back here is a logical target.”

Agave is the second of four foals and lone scorer out of G2 Prix de Pomone and G3 Prix Allez France placegetter Contribution (GB) (Champs Elysees {GB}), herself kin to a trio of black-type performers headed by dual G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe heroine Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}). The February-foaled bay is half to a 2-year-old filly by Golden Horn (GB) and a yearling filly by Study of Man (Ire). Her stakes-winning second dam Concentric (GB) (Sadler's Wells) ran third in the G3 Prix de Flore and is out of G3 Prix de Royaumont victrix Apogee (GB) (Shirley Heights {GB}). Descendants of Apogee include MGSW sire Apsis (GB) (Barathea {Ire}), MGSW G1 Prix de Diane runner-up Dance Routine (GB) (Sadler's Wells) and MGISW US champion and sire Flintshire (GB) (Dansili {GB}).

Three Juddmonte Mares To Be Offered At Inglis Chairman’s Sale

Courtesy TDN AusNZ

Juddmonte will offer a trio of mares, two in foal to Frankel (GB) and the other in foal to Kingman (GB), at the Inglis Chairman's Sale on May 6.

Consigned by Olly Tait's Twin Hills Stud, the Invincible Spirit (Ire) mare Escapement (GB), a half-sister to Group 1 winners Timepiece (GB) (Zamindar) and Passage Of Time (GB) (Dansili {GB}), the latter the dam of breakout stallion Time Test (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), is carrying to Frankel, as is Lucid Dreamer (GB) (Dansili {GB}). Lucid Dreamer is closely related to G1 St Leger winner Logician (GB) (Frankel {GB}). The third mare is Ludisia (GB) (Frankel {GB}), who is a full-sister to Group 3 heroine Fair Eva (GB) (Frankel {GB}) and is a half-sister to the dam of the 2021 European Champion 2-Year-Old Native Trail (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}). She is in foal to Kingman.

Frankel boasts sparkling strike rates of 30% black-type performers to runners and a 13% group winners to runners in Australia. His Converge (GB) won the G1 Randwick Guineas, joining fellow Southern Hemisphere Group 1 winners for his sire in Hungry Heart (Aus) and Mirage Dancer (GB).

“The development of the Inglis Chairman's Sale over the past few years has been noteworthy, making it an obvious choice for Juddmonte to showcase a select group of mares from some of our most established families,” Juddmonte's UK Stud Director Simon Mockridge said. “The mares to be consigned under Olly Tait's Twin Hills banner represent a unique opportunity for the Australian market to appraise and invest into deep Juddmonte pedigrees honed over generations and carrying to two elite international sires.

“Over the years, Juddmonte families have enjoyed great success in Australia/New Zealand through the likes of Group 1 winners Makybe Diva, Mr Baritone, Leicester, Kings Will Dream, Royal Performer and Queen Supreme and these results have been further buoyed by the emergence of Frankel and Kingman as sires of significant importance to the market.”

“We are naturally delighted to be presenting these mares at the Inglis Chairman's Sale on behalf of Juddmonte,” said Tait. “The mares represent some of Juddmonte's finest families, that have been carefully developed over decades and they would be worthy of a place in any broodmare band in the world.”

“This is a significant coup for the Chairman's Sale and an unprecedented opportunity for Australasian breeders,” said Inglis Senior Bloodstock Consultant and European Representative, Harry Bailey.

“The Juddmonte breeding operation is arguably the best in the world, so to have the opportunity to offer for sale mares they have specifically identified and managed with the Australian market in mind is a real honour.

“The catalogue is coming together beautifully and with entries closing soon, I encourage anyone with a mare that they think suitable, to contact a member of our Bloodstock Team to discuss arrangements.”

Asmussen Believes Midnight Bourbon Will ‘Put It All Together’ In Saudi Cup

American stars Mandaloun and Midnight Bourbon will renew their rivalry in the $20 million Saudi Cup.

The pair clashed in last month's Grade 3 Louisiana Stakes at Fair Grounds when Mandaloun came out on top by three-quarters of a length.

Now they will go head-to-head again in the world's most valuable race, run over nine furlongs on the dirt track at King Abdulaziz Racecourse in Riyadh on Saturday, Feb. 26.

The Louisiana Stakes was Mandaloun's first run since he was awarded the G1 Haskell Stakes at Monmouth Park in July when Hot Rod Charlie was disqualified for impeding Midnight Bourbon after passing the winning post a nose in front.

A setback prematurely ended the Kentucky Derby runner-up's 3-year-old season, and his trainer Brad Cox believes he is still improving ahead of his trip to Saudi for the world's most valuable fixture.

He said: “Mandaloun ran a really big race at Fair Grounds in the Louisiana Stakes. It was his first run in a while and he appears to have come out of it in great order – he had a good workout on Sunday morning.

“He seems to have moved forward from three to four. If he moves forward again, he's going to be tough in The Saudi Cup.

“I always thought he was a Grade 1 horse, so it was important for us and for Juddmonte to try to win a Grade 1 with him and add him to the stallion roster.

“Obviously, he was awarded the Grade 1 in the Haskell Stakes. Out of the Haskell he just wasn't quite right behind and we just gave him the time he needed.

“He's come back bigger and stronger. Florent (Geroux) rode him and he said as soon as he came back that he was a more polished horse mentally. That gives us a lot of confidence moving forward.

“I think the track will be fine. He's a horse who's capable of being where we need him to be in a race. He's able to adjust to the pace – if it's slow he can be up close, if it's fast he can sit off it.

“A one-turn mile-and-an-eighth (1800m) is not something we get much in America, Belmont is the only place, but I'm confident he'll be able to handle it.

“The Saudi Cup has not been around long but it's definitely grabbed the attention of the entire world. It's becoming a race on everyone's calendar and if we were capable of winning it for Juddmonte it would obviously mean a tremendous amount.”

Despite finishing behind Mandaloun in the Louisiana Stakes and last year's Kentucky Derby, when he endured a troubled passage, Midnight Bourbon's trainer Steve Asmussen has high hopes his stable star will finally claim his big-race victory.

The colt hasn't enjoyed much luck during his career. He unseated Paco Lopez when hampered as he made his challenge in the Haskell Stakes and his trainer believes the ability is there to be a champion.

Asmussen said: “He has an elite level of talent without finishing it off at this stage. He's not had the success his ability would allow but it also leaves a lot for us moving forward.

“He is still in a physical and mental development that I think allows for him to possibly end up being the best horse in training in the world this year.

“The only time he's missed the break in his life was in the Kentucky Derby which was won by a horse (Medina Spirit) he breaks next to in the Preakness and runs into the ground.

“It's one thing after another but it's there, it just needs to come together. I'm hoping beyond hope and expecting that he's waiting for The Saudi Cup stage to put it all together perfectly.”

Jockey Joel Rosario rode Midnight Bourbon in the Louisiana Stakes and he will keep the ride in the Group 1 Saudi Cup. He will need to reverse that form with Mandaloun but Asmussen believes last month's race will put the edge on his big race hope.

He said: “That was his prep for The Saudi Cup, not The Saudi Cup. He came out of it in better shape than he went into it. It was a very good exercise.

“I know from the preparation going into his last race, how he's come out of it and how he's worked since, that we are jumping forward.

“His numbers are very competitive with any horse in the world – the numbers being the speed he has attained. We just have to finish it off.

“He is considerably more mature in his approach to training than he has been in the past. He had a beautiful work on Sunday at Fair Grounds. He came out of it in great shape and he went back to the track very well on Tuesday morning.

“I will look for something a touch better, not significantly better, this coming Sunday. Then he will van from New Orleans to Palm Meadows and fly out from there.”

The American pair will attempt to wrestle The Saudi Cup crown from last year's winner Mishriff. He was reported to be in good shape ahead of the world's most valuable race by joint-trainer Thady Gosden on Tuesday.

Enable To Visit Dubawi

Dual G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe and triple G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S. winner Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) is one of eight Juddmonte mares set to visit Dubawi (Ire) this season. Enable, whose 11 Group 1 wins also included the G1 Oaks and GI Breeders' Cup Turf, was covered by Kingman (GB) last winter. Also visiting Dubawi are Enable's dam Concentric (Sadler's Wells) and group-placed half-sister Entitle (GB) (Dansili {GB}); Time Test (GB)'s dam Passage Of Time (GB) (Dansili {GB}); Frankel (GB)'s winning full-sister Chiasma (Ire); and black-type-winning Frankel fillies Obligate (GB), Mori (GB) and Fount (GB).

In its mating plans released on Thursday, Juddmonte quite understandably has designated a star-studded group for its breakout homebred sires Kingman and Frankel.

Kingman

Juddmonte mares visiting Kingman this season include Grade/Group 1 winners Juliet Foxtrot (GB) (Dansili {GB}), Quadrilateral (GB) (Frankel {GB}) and Samba Inc (Arg) (Include), as well as the champion 2-year-old filly Quadrilateral's dam Nimble Thimble (Mizzen Mast); Flare Of Firelight (Birdstone), the dam of G2 Gimcrack S. and G2 Vintage S. winner Threat (GB) (Footstepsinthesand {GB}); and young stakes-winning mares Dandhu (GB) (Dandy Man {Ire}), Isabella Giles (Ire) (Belardo {Ire}), Lucky Kristale (GB) (Lucky Story), Nay Lady Nay (Ire) (No Nay Never) and Pocket Square (GB) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}).

Frankel

Among the mares designated for champion sire Frankel (GB) are Grade/Group 1 winners Capla Temptress (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) and Winsili (GB) (Dansili {GB}); the multiple group winner Soffia (GB) (Kyllachy {GB}); Bird Flown (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) and Scuffle (GB) (Daylami {Ire}), the dams, respectively, of Juddmonte-bred Classic winners Siskin (First Defence) and Logician (GB) (Frankel {GB}); and Peace Charter (GB) (War Front), a half-sister to Frankel's exciting 3-year-old filly for 2022, Raclette (GB).

Expert Eye

Juddmonte sire Expert Eye (GB) has his first runners this year, and among the mares Juddmonte will send him in his fourth season are Modern Look (GB) (Zamindar), the dam of Grade III winner Grand Jete (GB) (Dansili {GB}), the listed-winning stakes producer Pavlosk (Arch); black-type mare Tendu (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}); stakes producer Announce (GB) (Selkirk); and Group 3 winner Hot Snap (GB) (Pivotal {GB}), a half-sister to six-time Group 1 winner Midday (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}). Midday is herself one of two Juddmonte mares that will visit Coolmore's Horse of the Year and champion 3-year-old St Mark's Basilica (Fr), the other being Group 1 winner Timepiece (GB) (Zamindar).

Bated Breath

Bated Breath (GB) stands for £15,000, his highest-ever fee, at Banstead Manor this year, and the Juddmonte mares he will receive include stakes producer Photographic (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}); listed winners Variable (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) and Zaminast (GB) (Zamindar); and Star Snap (GB) (Galileo {Ire}), a daughter of Hot Snap.

Showcasing, Time Test & New Bay

Juddmonte will also support stallions it has bred that are now standing at other studs. Among the mares set to be covered by Group 1 sire Showcasing (GB) are Fair Eva (GB) (Frankel {GB})'s dam African Rose (GB) (Observatory {GB}). Time Test, the sire of four stakes winners from his first crop last year, will cover the likes of Across The Floor (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}), the dam of Group 3 winner Acanella (GB) (Dansili {GB}); while New Bay (GB) will cover listed winner Heliac (GB) (Champs Elysees {GB}).

Outside Stallions

In addition to St Mark's Basilica, the outside stallions that Juddmonte will use include Night Of Thunder (Ire) (Grade I winner and stakes producer Ventura {Chester House}); Camelot (GB) (Frankel's stakes-producing sister Joyeuse {GB} {Oasis Dream}); Wootton Bassett (GB) for three mares including Joyeuse's daughter Jovial (GB) (Dubawi {Ire})) and Group 1 winner and stakes producer Romantica (GB) (Galileo {Ire}); Sea The Stars for another of Joyeuse's daughters, Jubiloso (GB) (Shamardal) and the Grade I-winning Viadera (GB) (Bated Breath {GB}); Siyouni (Fr) for two mares including Viadera's dam Sacred Shield (GB) (Beat Hollow {GB}); Lope De Vega (Ire) for the multiple Group 3 winner and stakes producer Big Break (GB) (Dansili {GB}); Kodiac (GB) for Straight Thinking (Mizzen Mast), which will result in a full-sibling to last year's listed-winning juvenile Straight Answer (GB); and Dark Angel (Ire) for Occurrence (GB) (Frankel {GB}), which will result in a full-sibling to last year's G3 Silver Flash S. second Juncture (GB).
