Nahanni Battles To Blue Riband Trial Success

Godolphin's Nahanni (GB) (Frankel {GB}), who bettered a Jan. 8 first-up second over 12 furlongs at Kempton with a breakthrough tally over that same course and distance the following month, prevailed by nine lengths going 12 furlongs in an Apr. 1 Leicester novices' heat on turf debut last time and continued his march forward with a battling victory in Tuesday's Listed Cazoo Blue Riband Trial at Epsom. Sent to the front after extended early skirmishes and nudged along on the lead with three furlongs remaining, he came under a drive when tackled passing the quarter-mile marker and stayed on gamely for continued urging in the closing stages to secure a career high in a bunch finish. Nahanni's victory comes with a golden ticket to the track's June 4 G1 Cazoo Derby.

“It was a nice performance and he has come on again,” said rider William Buick. “He was back down in trip from Leicester, but the drop back wasn't a concern and he handled the track well. He got on the front and was very comfortable up there. I liked his performance as he saw them all off and handled the track, which is key. It was the most competitive race he has ever encountered and he had to fight for it, so he has learnt plenty.”

In-form trainer Charlie Appleby added, “We were very much having a feel of where we were with this horse and I'm pleased with that effort today. We know he gets the trip as he has won his last two starts over a mile-and-a-half prior to today and he has ticked those boxes. He has now ticked the box of handling the track so the likelihood is we will now probably head straight to the Derby with him.”

Nahanni is one of two scorers from as many foals produced by a winning half to MG1SW sire Mastery (GB) (Sulamani {Ire}), G1 Gran Criterium victor Kirklees (Ire) (Jade Robbery) and the dual Group 3-placed First Nation (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}). Descendants of the February-foaled chestnut's second dam Moyesii (Diesis {GB}), herself a winning daughter of G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest and G1 Haydock Sprint Cup heroine Cherokee Rose (Ire) (Dancing Brave), include G1 Eclipse S.-winning sire Mukhadram (GB) (Shamardal) and MGSW G1 Premio Presidente della Repubblica runner-up Magic Artist (Ire) (Iffraaj {GB}).

Dubawi’s Agave Too Good For Penelope Rivals

Juddmonte's unbeaten 3-year-old filly Agave (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) defeated subsequent Listed Grand Criterium de Bordeaux victrix Singforthemoment (Ire) (No Nay Never) when graduating over ParisLongchamp's one-mile strip in a Sept. 2 debutantes' heat, her sole juvenile outing, and doubled up in style going 10 furlongs on seasonal return with a three-length tally and a career high in Saint-Cloud's Mar. 10 Listed Prix Rose de Mai last time. Upped in trip once more for Saturday's G3 Prix Penelope back at Saint-Cloud, the May 15 G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches and June 19 G1 Prix de Diane entry continued her rapid ascent with a snug success in this pointer to the latter Classic. Agave was restrained to race off the pace in sixth after breaking smartly from an outer gate and turned for home in sixth. Making smooth headway out wide in the straight to launch her challenge at the quarter-mile marker, the 3-10 favourite led soon after and was pushed out in the closing stages to comfortably hold the late rattle of G3 Prix des Reservoirs runner-up Queen Trezy (Fr) (Almanzor {Fr}) by 3/4-of-a-length, extending trainer Andre Fabre's record haul of renewals to nine.

“This filly has improved with every run, she has gone up in class with aplomb every time and we're delighted with this result,” said Juddmonte's on-course representative. “[Jockey] Olivier Peslier remarked that she was not favoured by the lack of pace and thought that he'd moved forward a little soon to avoid being caught for speed. He felt he was always safely in control. Andre Fabre will discuss plans with the family and racing manager Barry Mahon. She's entered in the [May 29 G1 Prix] Saint-Alary [back at ParisLongchamp] and that could be her next target.”

Agave is the second of four foals and lone scorer out of G2 Prix de Pomone and G3 Prix Allez France placegetter Contribution (GB) (Champs Elysees {GB}), herself kin to a trio of black-type performers headed by dual G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe heroine Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}). The February-foaled bay, who becomes the 149th group-race winner for her sire, is a half-sister to the hitherto unraced 2-year-old filly Salient Point (GB) (Golden Horn {GB}) and a yearling filly by Study of Man (Ire). Her stakes-winning second dam Concentric (GB) (Sadler's Wells) ran third in the G3 Prix de Flore and is out of G3 Prix de Royaumont victrix Apogee (GB) (Shirley Heights {GB}). Descendants of Apogee include MGSW sire Apsis (GB) (Barathea {Ire}), MGSW G1 Prix de Diane runner-up Dance Routine (GB) (Sadler's Wells) and MGISW US champion and sire Flintshire (GB) (Dansili {GB}).

Right to her inside, Juddmonte will send out Patna (Into Mischief), the half-sister to Ducale (Twirling Candy) who is twice a winner and never off the board in five lifetime starts. TDN Snippets: Week of March 7-13

Legacy pedigrees made their presence felt last week as debuters and Derby contenders alike took to the stage. Here's how things stand now that the dust has cleared.

One last hurrah for Giant's Causeway…
Classic Causeway flies his late sire's flag high as part of a very exclusive club. One of three members of Giant's Causeway's final crop–and all colts, the GII Lambholm South Tampa Bay Derby winner is the third son of the 'Iron Horse' to conquer the race behind Carpe Diem and Destin. With two generations of Classic-winning dam sires in his pedigree, the chestnut seeks to fly in further rarified air in May.

An American in the Land of Oz…
LNJ Foxwood's Lighthouse (Mizzen Mast) might have shown a new light on US participation in Australian racing when the mare came home strongest of all to win the G1 Coolmore Classic at Rosehill on Saturday. She's the second US-bred in three years to win the Coolmore, joining Con Te Partiro in 2020. Con Te Partiro was purchased privately from Newgate SF (after RNA-ing at Keeneland November in 2020) by Sheikh Fahad's Qatar Racing for $1.6 million.

A strong Constitution…
We the People declared himself a voice unable to be ignored when the Constitution colt dominated his allowance rivals at Oaklawn Park en route to declaration of rising stardom. The $230,000 FTFMAR snag by Winstar Farm, CMNWLTH, & Siena Farm became his sire's seventh 'TDN Rising Star' in two years. We the People was bred on the same Constitution/Tiznow cross as MGISW Tiz the Law. Picked up by Henley Farms for $40,000 at the 2019 KEEJAN sale with We the People in utero, his dam, Letchworth produced an Always Dreaming colt in 2020 and an Audible colt in 2021. Both are May foals. She was bred back to More Than Ready.

Team Valor sees green with inexpensive filly…
Green Up (Upstart) might be a bit immature with room to grow, according to Barry Irwin, but the filly has already shown the only path for her is up. Coming off a big figure second place effort for prior connections, the globetrotting silks flew home in a 6 3/4 length masterclass in Hallendale with 'TDN Rising Star' honors as icing. A modest $10,000 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic yearling, and a later private acquisition by Irwin's syndicate, Green Up claims the solid runner Just Call Kenny (Jump Start) in her female family. She is her sire's second Rising Star along with Reinvestment Risk last year and Upstart also claims Kentucky Oaks prospect Kathleen O.

The Curlin Factor…
Juddmonte homebred Obligatory began her 2022 campaign the same way she ended 2021: with a graded win. Curlin, who is the sire of this filly and 46 other graded winners, has 86 black-type winners to his name, representing just over 11% of his starters. Incredible numbers especially when considering 16 of those are Grade I winners. Obligatory is a third-generation Juddmonte homebred. Juddmonte bought her unraced third dam, Nijinsky Star, for $700,000 at the 1987 Keeneland November sale.
