Well-Bred Gun Runner Colt Opens Book 2 on a High Note

It did not take long for the action to get going during Book 2's opening session Wednesday with Hip 383, a colt by sensational young sire Gun Runner, summoning $1.05 million just minutes into the session. He was purchased by the powerhouse partnership headed by SF, Starlight and Madaket Stables with SF's Tom Ryan doing his bidding on the phone. Bred by Ann Fostock, the Feb. 2 foal was consigned by Pope McLean's Crestwood Farm. The bay hails from a deep Juddmonte family with his second dam being MGISW Flute.

Mandaloun Retired to Juddmonte USA

Juddmonte homebred Mandaloun (Into Mischief–Brooch, by Empire Maker), the promoted 2021 GI Kentucky Derby winner, has been retired. He will stand for $25,000 (stands and nurses) at Juddmonte USA in Kentucky.

Tabbed as a 'TDN Rising Star' in his Keeneland debut at two, Mandaloun was elevated to first via disqualification in a roughly run renewal of the GI TVG.com Haskell S. the following season at Monmouth Park. His resume also includes wins in the GII Risen Star S., GIII Louisiana S. and TVG.com Pegasus S. The handsome bay posted a career record of 12-6-1-1 and earnings of $2,096,052.

One of 11 winners at the highest level for his all-conquering sire Into Mischief, Mandaloun is out of Empire Maker's two-time Irish group winner Brooch.

Mandaloun's female family also includes G1 Matron S. winner Emulous (GB) (Dansili {GB}) and the globetrotting German Group 3 winner Alounak (Fr) (Camelot {GB}), runner-up in the GI Canadian International S.

“This horse is the entire package, I don't know that I have seen a better-looking son of Into Mischief,” trainer Brad Cox said. “We knew we had something special right out of the box. He had an exceptional turn of foot yet could carry his speed around two turns.”

“Mandaloun is a true Juddmonte stallion,” said Garrett O'Rourke, General Manager of Juddmonte USA. “He is a gorgeous horse who should offer breeders exceptional value when the time comes to sell their yearlings. We plan to support him in the same manner we did with the likes of Empire Maker and Arrogate.”

Kingman’s ‘Rising Star’ Kinross To The Fore On Town Moor

Back in vogue when successful in last month's seven-furlong G2 City of York S. on the Knavesmire, Marc Chan's 'TDN Rising Star' Kinross (GB) (Kingman {GB}–Ceilidh House {GB}, by Selkirk) continued his renaissance with a one-length victory in Sunday's G2 Cazoo Park S. at Doncaster.

Frankel’s Chaldean Makes All For Easy Champagne Success

Racing returned to Britain's shores Sunday as Doncaster's rescheduled G2 Coral Champagne S. initiated a barrage of non-stop European stakes action with Juddmonte's 550,000gns Tattersalls December foal Chaldean (GB) (Frankel {GB}–Suelita {GB}, by Dutch Art {GB}) prevailing in a three-runner affair to add to his victory over the reopposing Indestructible (Ire) (Kodiac {Ire}) in last month's G3 Acomb S. at York. The May-foaled chestnut had earlier backed up a June 30 debut fifth at Newbury with a July 15 graduation back there, accounting for Silver Knott (GB) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) and others, before rallying when headed by Indestructible to prevail on the Knavesmire last time. In front and dominating from flagfall here, the 2-1 second choice was asked to stretch with three furlongs remaining and was clear throughout the final quarter mile to easily account for the former by 3 1/2 lengths. Silver Knott, let go as the 8-13 pick, was unable to land a telling blow and finished 1 3/4 lengths back in third.

“I know I was able to set my own fractions, but when I asked him to go he did go,” explained Frankie Dettori. “He gave me a real good feel, he hit the line strong and he's not just one-paced, he's got gears. I've suggested he goes to the [G1] Dewhurst because of the way he won today. He's entitled to be there.” Winning trainer Andrew Balding added, “He's also in the [G1 Prix Jean-Luc] Lagardere and there's the [G1] Vertem Futurity back here, so we'll have a discussion with the owners and their representatives and come up with a plan. He'll certainly stay a mile, but he's not slow and that's what you want in a class horse. He's a high-class horse in the making.”

Chaldean is the sixth foal and scorer produced by a multiple-winning half-sister to G3 Cornwallis S. runner-up Outer Space (GB) (Acclamation {GB}) and the dam of G2 Lowther S. victrix Living In The Past (Ire) (Bungle Inthejungle {Ire}). The May-foaled chestnut is a half-brother to G2 Mill Reef S. victor Alkumait (GB) (Showcasing {GB}), Listed Committed S. winner The Broghie Man (GB) (Cityscape {GB}), the dual stakes-placed Get Ahead (GB) (Showcasing {GB}), Listed Prix Herod third Gloves Lynch (GB) (Mukhadram {GB}) and a weanling filly by Frankel (GB).
