Well-Bred Juddmonte Munnings Filly Scores on Debut at Santa Anita

10th-Santa Anita, $68,000, Msw, 3-18, 3yo, f, 6 1/2f, 1:15.86, ft, 1 1/2 lengths.
PLEASANT (f, 3, Munnings–Fair Lady, by Medaglia d'Oro) jumped well at odds of 9-2 despite getting bumped leaving the gate in her debut run and forced the issue from an outside second. Traveling kindly while racing in hand, she turned up the heat on the far turn and braced for the challenge of heavily favored $1.2-million FTFMAR graduate and second-time starter Ruby Nell (Bolt d'Oro) leaving the quarter pole. Pleasant still had plenty left in the tank, however, and powered home to graduate by 1 1/2 lengths. The unraced Fair Lady, a daughter of the brilliant GISW and GI Breeders' Cup Sprint runner-up Honest Lady (Seattle Slew), had a filly by Not This Time in 2022 and was not bred back. This is also the loaded female family of GISWs First Defence (Unbridled's Song), Empire Maker (Unbridled) and Chester House (Mr. Prospector). Broodmare of the Year Toussaud (El Gran Senor) is Pleasant's third dam. The Munnings over Medaglia d'Oro cross is also responsible for GSW Barkley. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $40,200. Juddmonte’s Accede A Winner On Debut At Gulfstream

7th-Gulfstream, $71,400, Msw, 3-16, 3yo/up, f/m, 6f, 1:10.67, ft, 1 1/2 lengths.
ACCEDE (f, 3, Into Mischief–Jibboom {MGSW & GISP, $487,600}, by Mizzen Mast), the 7-5 favorite for her career bow, broke with the front flight but was outsprinted for the lead by Snow Princess (Quality Road). Two wide between rivals into the far turn, she was able to tip inside as the field swung past the quarter pole and make a sustained run against the rail to clear off with a furlong to run. Maerdama (Girvin), another first-time starter, chased her home but was 1 1/2 lengths back of the winner. Jibboom, already the dam of Flying Jib (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}), GSW-Ire, $135,114, is herself a full-sister to G1 Stewards' Cup winner Sea Defence and to the dam of GISW Gold Phoenix (Ire) (Belardo {Ire}). Afer losing her Into Mischief foal in 2021, Jibboom was not bred for 2022 but foaled a colt by Tacitus this year. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $42,000. Justify Filly Goes Two-For-Two With Chantilly Triumph

Prime Equestrian's €150,000 Arqana August graduate Secretive (Fr) (Justify–Media Mischief, by Into Mischief) backed up a debut success at Deauville last November with a comfortable three-length tally on sophomore return in Monday's Prix du Chateau over one mile at Chantilly. The daughter of $550,000 Keeneland November mare Media Mischief (Into Mischief) is entered in both May 14 G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches and June 18 G1 Prix de Diane, with trainer Yann Barberot stating the former is on the agenda after taking in one more run next month.

2nd-Chantilly, €28,000, Cond, 3-13, 3yo, f, 8f (AWT), 1:41.67, st.
SECRETIVE (FR) (f, 3, Justify–Media Mischief, by Into Mischief), a €150,000 Arqana August yearling who accounted for a trio of subsequent winners when annexing her Nov. 29 unveiling over 7 1/2 furlongs at Deauville in her only prior start, was swiftly into stride and accepted a tow in a comfortable second for most of this sophomore bow. Inching ahead at the quarter-mile pole, the 1-2 favourite was shaken up passing the furlong marker and kept on impressively under mild coaxing in the closing stages to easily defeat Dark Zel (Fr) (Zelzal {Fr}) by three lengths. “I am delighted to see her win so nicely as she is one of my best fillies at home,” reflected trainer Yann Barberot. “The form of her first race is very strong and she had come to hand nicely this last week, but she is not yet at her peak and will come on for that. The plan is one more start in April before going for the [May 14 G1] Poule d'Essai des Pouliches [at ParisLongchamp].” Secretive, who also boasts an engagement in this track's June 18 G1 Prix de Diane, is the second foal and scorer produced by a daughter of GII Buena Vista H. and G3 Prix du Bois winner Media Nox (GB) (Lycius), herself kin to three stakes performers headed by MGSW G2 Prix de Malleret victrix Bonash (GB) (Rainbow Quest). Media Nox also threw three pattern-race winners, headed by G1 Prix de Diane and G1 Prix du Moulin heroine Nebraska Tornado (Storm Cat), and her descendants feature last term's G1 Irish Derby victor Westover (GB) (Frankel {GB}). The February-foaled bay's dam Media Mischief was a lucrative proposition in the sales ring and changed hands for 250,000gns at Tattersalls' 2017 December Mares and $450,000 at Keeneland's 2019 January Mixed sale. She was also a $475,000 RNA at the 2018 Keeneland November Foals and Mares sale. China Horse Club International forked out $550,000 for her, carrying Secretive, at the following year's fixture while her 2019 filly Vaccine Of Hope (Pioneerof the Nile), herself a $260,000 Keeneland September graduate, notched two wins in 2022. Unfortunately, her 2021 colt by Siyouni (Fr) died last year. Sales history: €150,000 Ylg '21 ARQAUG. Lifetime Record: 2-2-0-0, €27,500. Video, sponsored by TVG.

American Sprint Champ Elite Power Gives Dettori And Juddmonte The Victory In Riyadh Dirt Sprint

Named the 2022 Eclipse Champion Male Sprinter, Juddmonte's Elite Power (Curlin) picked up right where he left off with an easy 3 1/4-length score in the G3 Riyadh Dirt Sprint Presented By Sports Boulevard. The favorite held fellow American-bred challenger and GI Hopeful S. hero Gunite (Gun Runner) in second in the $1.5-million 1200-meter race.

In between horses as Meraas (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) showed the way, the $900,0000 Keeneland September yearling raced in the last third of the field away from the kickback in the center of the track. Piloted by veteran jockey extraordinaire Frankie Dettori, who rode Juddmonte's star mare Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) and is riding his final season, the 5-year-old had about five lengths to make up at the 500-metre mark. The Italian said go a few strides later, and Elite Power unleashed a strong turn of foot to motor right by his rivals before the final furlong and win as he pleased. Gunite also made steady late progress to take second, another two lengths to the good of Remake (Jpn) (Lani). The victory marked the first time a Breeders' Cup winner had landed a Saudi Cup day event, and it was the first time an American-based horse had made the winner's circle in the Dirt Sprint.

Dettori, who had also finished second in the G3 Saudi Derby Presented By Boutique Group aboard Havnameltdown (Uncaptured), and filled the same spot later in the evening with Country Grammer (Tonalist) in the G1 Saudi Cup, said, “My first word has to be aeroplane. I was a little out of reach and asked him to get a little closer and then the turbo just kicked in and I was a passenger then. He's a very laid-back horse and only does what you ask him to do but wow he has some turn of foot.

“The Abdullah family has given so much to the sport; the legacy keeps going. I love these colors and it's nice to give the locals something to cheer about.”

Neil Poznansky, assistant to trainer Bill Mott, said, “He's a big strong animal. He shows nothing but class. He shipped over here like he was here his whole life. He's a good horse, a very good horse. His turn of foot is incredible, he's just incredible to watch, a magnificent animal.

“He's really coming into himself and getting better as he was really slow to mature. Now he's putting it all together. Bill doesn't come here without reason but bringing a horse like Elite Power is a good reason to come. For Frankie and Juddmonte it was like a whole dynasty thing.”

Comparatively lightly raced, Elite Power's victory was his sixth in a row. After an allowance optional claiming win at Saratoga in September, he ran out a 5 3/4-length winner of the GII Vosburgh S. at Belmont Park a month later, and secured his first top-level tally in the GI Breeders' Cup Sprint at Keeneland Nov. 5.

Pedigree Notes:

One of the best dirt sires standing in America, dual Horse of the Year Curlin also thrived in desert conditions, taking the 2008 G1 Dubai World Cup. The Hill 'n' Dale at Xalapa stallion has 93 stakes winners (51 graded) to his credit. Of Curlin's 20 Grade I-winning offspring, 11 trace tail male to Seattle Slew, and Elite Power is out of a Vindication mare, just like three-time Grade I winner and GI Preakness S. winner Exaggerator.

Broadway's Alibi won the GII Forward Gal S. and GIII Comely S. and was second in the GI Kentucky Oaks in 2012. Put in foal to Curlin's sire Smart Strike, the dark bay made $2.15 million from Alpha Delta Stables when offered as part of the E. Paul Robsham Stables dispersal during the 2013 Keeneland November Sale. The lone runner out of his dam, Elite Power has a 2-year-old full-brother, and Broadway's Alibi is carrying to City of Light.

GI Florida Derby hero Dialed In (Mineshaft) is a half-brother to the winner's granddam, Astoria S. heroine Broadway Gold (Seeking the Gold). Elite Power's fourth dam is American Champion Juvenile Filly Eliza (Mt. Livermore), who collected both the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies and GI Santa Anita Oaks, and was second in the GI Kentucky Oaks.
