Chaldean Gives Frankel His Guineas Winner On Frankie Finale

Persistent rain in the lead-up to Saturday's G1 Qipco 2000 Guineas turned the ground to soft at Newmarket and while several of the race's big names floundered, Juddmonte's ultra-professional Chaldean (GB) (Frankel {GB}–Suelita {GB}, by Dutch Art {GB}) stayed straight and true to win with authority. Providing Frankie Dettori with the ultimate final ride in the mile Classic, the Andrew Balding-trained 7-2 second favourite tracked TDN Rising Star Hi Royal (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) up the centre and as that 125-1 shot began to veer left heading into the dip and duly took control.

Forging clear up the rising ground, the G3 Acomb S., G2 Champagne S. and G1 Dewhurst S. hero who had dramatically unseated Dettori at the start of the G3 Greenham S. a fortnight earlier, hit the line strong with 1 3/4 lengths to spare over the Kevin Ryan-trained outsider. Royal Scotsman (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}) was half a length away in third as the 13-8 favourite Auguste Rodin (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) beat only two rivals home and one of those was the last-placed Little Big Bear (Ire) (No Nay Never).

“I can't believe it's happened really–it's mad and I have mixed emotions, I don't know whether to laugh or cry,” Dettori said. “My last Guineas, to win it in front of my home crowd, it's amazing and beyond my wildest dreams.”

Other than when he was beaten on his debut at two and when finishing riderless on this year's introduction, Chaldean has proven as reliable as he is classy and with the benefit of hindsight it is difficult to believe that he started as only the second favourite in a three-runner Champagne in September. Even in the Dewhurst, the chestnut was only joint-favourite alongside the operation's other runner Nostrum (GB) (Kingman {GB}) so being under-rated is a thing that has come with the territory.

With the four preceding races on the straight course giving no indication of any bias, there were no excuses on that score for any of the beaten runners and it was more likely ground conditions that contributed to the downfall of the other favourites. The free-running Little Big Bear did little for his prospects with understandable freshness and while Hi Royal and Oisin Murphy and Chaldean enjoyed the run of the race up front Auguste Rodin, Royal Scotsman and Sakheer (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) were probably too far adrift by halfway.

From the two pole, each time Frankie got alongside Hi Royal the imposing Ryan runner ducked left and that left Chaldean in the clear and home free. As he stayed on strongly to the line, the race's dubious stayers were only treading water in behind with Auguste Rodin disappointingly disappearing out of sight. In the final analysis, it may be that the winner was the only true top-class miler to act in the ground and so it was a surprise to hear that Andrew Balding had stamina doubts.

“I was a bit worried about the mile in this ground, but what a brilliant ride from Frankie,” the master of Kingsclere said after greeting his second 2000 Guineas winner in four years. “What can't you say about Frankie? Since I've been involved in the sport he's been an omnipresent superstar of the sport and what a fitting way to ride his last 2000 Guineas. He always looked to be travelling comfortably, I was just a bit worried about getting past Oisin because he can get extra lengths out of a horse. It's a mixture of relief and elation, it's a big deal. He might stay 10 furlongs in time, but no further.”

Hi Royal, who was the least-exposed and most under-the-radar TDN Rising Star in the line-up, would have made more of a fight of it had he stayed straight as he channelled the positive energy of his dam Majestic Roi (Street Cry {Ire}) who sprang a 16-1 upset in the 2007 G1 Sun Chariot S. over this course and distance. Jaber Abdullah's racing manager Bruce Raymond said, “That was no surprise, as Kevin Ryan told us in the paddock that he thought the horse could run a big race and that he thought he would handle the ground. Kevin wants to get him home and see where we go next but he could be a Royal Ascot type.”

Oliver Cole is also keen to go to the G1 St James's Palace S. and take on the winner and runner-up with Royal Scotsman. “He's run a massive race to be third, but he was a bit too keen in the early stages,” he said. “He had no problem with the ground, as he goes on anything. It was always the idea to come straight here and hopefully he can improve from this and we can have another crack at the winner at Royal Ascot.”

Aidan O'Brien said of his pair, “It was a non-event for Ryan's horse and then Wayne's horse got badly bumped and just got lit up. The whole thing was a bit of a non-event really. The travelling over is what it is.”

Lordan added of Little Big Bear, “He jumped smart and felt like he wanted to show me his pace. We didn't go mad for the first two furlongs, something caught my heel and it wasn't ideal.”

Pedigree Notes

Providing Frankel's inevitable first 2000 Guineas success, Chaldean is the sixth winner and fifth black-type performer out of Suelita alongside the G2 Mill Reef S. scorer Alkumait (GB) (Showcasing {GB}). Suelita is kin to the G3 Cornwallis S. runner-up Outer Space (GB) (Acclamation {GB}) and to the dam of Living In The Past (Fr) (Bungle Inthejungle {GB}), who continues the trend of sprinters in the first two generations with success in the G2 Lowther S.

The third dam is the GII Matchmaker S. winner Horatia (Ire) (Machiavellian), whose leading progeny is the G3 Pinnacle S. scorer and GI E.P. Taylor S.-placed Moment In Time (Ire) (Tiger Hill {Ire}) and whose daughter Awohaam (Ire) (Iffraaj {GB}) produced the G3 Marble Hill S. scorer and G1 Middle Park S. runner-up Castle Star (Ire) (Staspangledbanner {Aus}). In contrast, Horatia is a half to the five-times group-winning stayer Opinion Poll (Ire) (Halling) who Frankie knew well along with another of the family's stars, Markofdistinction (GB) (Known Fact) who provided him with his first Group 1 win in the 1990 Queen Elizabeth II S. Suelita's yearling filly by Kingman (GB) was the 1 million gns Tattersalls December Foal Sale topper after Juddmonte refused to let her go.

All Systems Go For Chaldean In Guineas

Group 1 winner Chaldean (GB) (Frankel {GB}), who races for Juddmonte, is reportedly in good order ahead of a start in the G1 QIPCO 2000 Guineas on Saturday, according to trainer Andrew Balding.

The colt, who dislodged Frankie Dettori at the start of the G3 Craven S. before completing a circuit of the course, worked “extremely well” on Saturday, Balding noted.

“We will only know on Saturday what we missed out on at Newbury and the benefits of having a run as obviously it would have been far more of a benefit for him to have had a jockey on board and have a proper race,” he said.

“At the same time, it wasn't totally lost as he had to go through the preliminary tests of saddling, walking around the paddock and cantering down to the start, which are the extras that go with a run and not just a gallop at home. Thankfully he didn't go and do another circuit loose. He was fairly sensible.

“I couldn't be happier with him at the moment and Frankie rode him on Saturday and he worked extremely well. It was a very solid piece and his fitness levels are as good as we could hope for in the circumstances.”

Chaldean won the G3 Acomb S., G2 Champagne S., and G1 Dewhurst S. in succession as a juvenile. The Craven was his 3-year-old bow. Dettori, who has won the Guineas three times, will be aboard on Saturday, and the duo face a stiff challenge, especially from Ireland, in the form of the Coolmore partners' Group 1 winners Little Big Bear (Ire) (No Nay Never) and Auguste Rodin (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn}).

Making Waves: Gimme Shelter In New York

   In this series, the TDN takes a look at notable successes of European-based sires in North America. This week's column is highlighted by the victory of Belouni (Fr) (Fast Company {Ire}) in the Woodhaven S. at Aqueduct.

 

Belouni Finds His Haven at Aqueduct

Michael Dubb, Madaket Stables, Michael Kisber and William Rucker's Belouni ran out a 1 1/2-length winner of Aqueduct's Woodhaven S. last Saturday (video). The son of Vienna View (GB) (Dalakhani {Ire}) was making his second U.S. start.

Bred by Le Thenney and offered by Arcadia Elevage, the colt brought €20,000 as an Arqana October yearling from future trainer Christophe Escuder. He would subsequently win two of his four starts for Scuderia Il Fino culminating with a second in the Listed Criterium de Lyon last September. Sent back through the Arqana ring, he attracted a bid of €180,000 during the Arc Sale from Hubert Guy before joining the Chad Brown barn.

One of four winners for his placed dam, Belouni is followed by a 2-year-old colt by Sommerabend (GB). He is kin to numerous top-level winners including Dominant (Ire) (Cacique {GB}), Aristia (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}), Teppal (Fr) (Camacho {GB}), and the In Clover (GB) (Inchinor {GB}) foals–Call The Wind (GB) (Frankel {GB}), With You (GB) (Dansili {GB}), and We Are (Ire) (Dansili {GB}).

Deceased in 2020, the Danehill Dancer (Ire)-line stallion Fast Company now has two stakes winners to his name in the U.S. (14%), with the Woodhaven scorer joining 2018 GI Arlington Million hero Robert Bruce (Chi). Altogether, the former Darley stallion has eight winners out of 14 runners (57%).

 

Glen Hill Homebred Brings Frankel West

Wide West (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) led gate-to-wire to take a Gulfstream Park all-weather allowance optional claimer by a neck last Saturday and put a second notch in her win column in the process (video). The Tom Proctor trainee is bred and raced by Craig Bernick's Glen Hill Farm.

Wide West was shipped Stateside before ever racing, and got off the mark sprinting over the Gulfstream Park all-weather in August of 2022. One start later, she was a good fourth in the Hollywood Beach S. there, and Saturday's tally was her sixth start.

A half-sister to GI Santa Anita Oaks winner Crisp (El Corredor), Deer Valley was picked up by Glen Hill Farm for $340,000 out of the Keeneland September Yearling Sale in 2015. She would go on to win a Monmouth Park stakes in the orange, black and white Glen Hill colours back in 2017, and Wide West is her first foal. Her juvenile Kingman (GB) colt is named King Julien, and she was covered by both Candy Ride (Arg) and Quality Road last spring. GI Futurity S. hero Whywhywhy (Mr. Greeley) and multiple graded winner Spellbinder (Tale Of The Cat), both sires, are under the third dam.

Few stallions are more sought after on an international stage than Juddmonte's Frankel, and Wide West is one of 25 winners from 43 runners (58%) in America. Of his nine stakes winners (21%) in the U.S., five are graded winners led by GI Belmont Oaks heroine McKulick (GB).

 

 

Showcasing Colt All The Rage At Keeneland

Wesley Ward unveiled favoured Fandom (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) at Keeneland on Thursday, and the Stonestreet Stables silksbearer did not disappoint, reporting home 6 3/4 lengths to the good of his nearest rival (video).

Part of the Chasemore Farm breeding programme, the March foal sold for 170,000gns during Book 2 of the 2022 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale to Barbara Banke's agent Ben McElroy. His year-younger half-sister is by Masar (Ire), while their dam, the Chasemore homebred Brogan (GB) (Pivotal {GB}), won over 1400 metres at Haydock as a juvenile. Brogan is a half-sister to none other than 2022 Cartier Champion 2-Year-Old Filly, G1 Cheveley Park S. heroine Lezoo (GB) (Zoustar {Aus), one of the leading fancies for the G1 QIPCO 1000 Guineas in one week's time.

Twenty-two progeny of Whitsbury Manor Stud's Showcasing have competed in the U.S., with an even 50% winning at least once. His quartet of stakes winners in that jurisdiction stands at four (18%), with Prize Exhibit (GB), Projected (GB), and Bodhicitta (GB) all striking at Grade II level.

 

King For A Day

Already featured in Making Waves this February, Turf King (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) maintained his perfect record with a narrow score in a one-mile Keeneland grass allowance for trainer Chad Brown and Wise Racing (video) on Friday.

The relative of Goldikova (Ire) (Anabaa) is one of 26 winners from 49 runners (53%) for his Juddmonte sire in the U.S. Seven of Kingman's get (13%) have won stakes, among them multiple Group 1 winner Domestic Spending (GB), who is also trained by Brown.

From an international standpoint since the turn of the year, five of Kingman's progeny have take black-type races led by Group 1 winner Schnell Meister (Ger) in the G2 Yomiuri Milers Cup in Japan. Remarquee (GB) claimed the G3 Fred Darling S. at Newbury, and 'TDN Rising Star' Epictetus (Ire) and Laurel (GB) both won listed races in England. In France, Sauterne (Fr) landed the Listed Prix du Pont Neuf earlier this past week.

Kingman’s Remarquee Notches Fred Darling Triumph

Julian Richmond-Watson and Ralph Beckett tasted Classic success in 2008 with G1 Oaks heroine Look Here (GB) (Hernando {Ger}) and they are once again eyeing a moment in the spotlight after Remarquee (GB) (Kingman {GB}–Regardez {GB}, by Champs Elysees {GB}), who is from the family of Look Here, downed 11 rivals with something to spare in Saturday's G3 Dubai Duty Free S. (Fred Darling S.) at Newbury. Positioned under cover and racing a shade enthusiastically in mid division through the initial fractions of this straight seven-furlong test, the Sept. 29 Salisbury maiden winner and 7-2 chance surged forward into contention at the quarter-mile pole and quickened in impressive fashion under mild urging inside the final furlong to comfortably hold the late rally of Stenton Glider (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire}) by a neck, despite rider Rob Hornby dropping his whip in the closing stages.

Remarquee's triumph was a fifth in the contest, and first since 2015, for Beckett, who insisted a crack at the May 7 G1 1000 Guineas was now very much on the cards. “It's great, it's everything I'd hoped for and more,” the trainer beamed. “She was green and running away and Rob [Hornby] dropped his stick by the time she was running away from the crowd. Richard Hannon's filly [Magical Sunset] leant on her a bit, so she had Kevin Stott's stick in her face for a couple of strides. She doesn't know very much, but she will know more after today and we will certainly go to Newmarket [for the 1000 Guineas]. I think she is very good and she has got to go there on the back of that. Her mother wanted fast ground and maybe she handles this ground, but I don't see fast ground being a problem.”

Hornby added, “She seems a good mover and she has a high head carriage, which is a bit like Kingman. They tend to be a bit like that, but it doesn't stop her. It is probably what she finds comfortable and she was still running true all the way to the line. She will definitely stay further and, while you don't know until you've tried it, I'm sure she will act well on the course at Newmarket. She is not short of speed and I think a mile will be right for her.”
