Sunday’s Insight: ‘TDN Rising Star’ Scylla Marks New Campaign At Gulfstream

9th-GP, $92K, OC62k, 4yo/up, f, 1m, 5:07 p.m. ET.
Juddmonte colorbearer SCYLLA (Tapit) makes her return to the races as the older filly looks to jumpstart her new campaign.

The Bill Mott trainee certainly made her mark when she attained 'TDN Rising Star' honors as a debut winner at Keeneland last April, and then followed that up with an 8 1/4-length win against optional claimers at Churchill Downs in early June.

Out of champion older mare Close Hatches (First Defence), the homebred is a full-sister to MGSW/MGISP and current sire Tacitus. Close Hatches herself counts as a full-sister MGISP Lockdown, who is responsible for 2023 Eclipse Award winning older dirt female Idiomatic (Curlin). Under Scylla's third dam we find Irish multiple group 1 stakes hero Siskin (First Defence). TJCIS PPS

Yorkshire Oaks An Option For Classic-Placed Bluestocking

G1 Irish Oaks runner-up Bluestocking (GB) (Camelot {GB}) is likely for the G1 Yorkshire Oaks on Aug. 24, Barry Mahon, European racing manager for owner/breeder Juddmonte, confirmed on Wednesday.

Trained by Ralph Beckett, the daughter of 2011 G1 Matron S. heroine Emulous (GB) (Dansili {GB}) has never been off the board in four starts. After breaking her maiden at Salisbury in September, she ran second in a listed at Newbury behind Warm Heart (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) making her 3-year-old bow, and was third behind that filly in the G2 Ribblesdale S. at Royal Ascot in June.

Mahon said, “Whilst we thought the world of her, her form before the Irish Oaks wouldn't have suggested she was going to put in a run like that, but we sort of always felt she had that in her.

“We'll look towards York for her. It will more than likely be the Yorkshire Oaks, but because she hasn't won yet this year she has the option of the race we won with Haskoy (GB) (Golden Horn {GB}) last year [Listed Galtres S.].”

Dual Arc Champ Enable Welcomes Dubawi Filly

Juddmonte's homebred champion Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) welcomed her second foal, a chestnut filly by Dubawi (Ire), on Saturday morning. A half-sister to a yearling colt by Kingman (GB), the filly arrived at 6:50 a.m.

“Juddmonte is delighted to announce the safe arrival at 6:50 a.m. on 11 Mar. of Enable's second foal, a chestnut filly by Dubawi,” Juddmonte tweeted. “She is a quality filly in the mould of her dam, bright and alert, she was quickly to her feet, nursing within a couple of hours.”

Enable is one of the finest runners ever to carry the green, pink and white silks of the late Prince Khalid Abdullah, accruing 11 Group 1 victories, including two editions of the G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. She will return to the court of Dubawi this season, as will her dam, Concentric (GB) (Sadler's Wells), as the 2023 Juddmonte mating plans were announced in early February.

Juddmonte’s Sun Chariot Second Laurel To Return In 2023

Juddmontes Group 1-placed filly Laurel (GB) (Kingman {GB}), second in the G1 Sun Chariot S. on her third start last month, will return for a 4-year-old campaign, according to Juddmonte Racing Manager Barry Mahon. Trained by John and Thady Gosden, the daughter of 2008 G1 Pretty Polly S. heroine Promising Lead (GB) (Danehill) won novices at Newmarket and Kempton in July and September, respectively before her first stakes attempt in the Sun Chariot.

“Laurel will be in training next year, she probably won't run again this season,” said Juddmonte racing manager, Barry Mahon of the 'TDN Rising Star'. “We'll put her away now most likely, and we'll train her to bring her back as a 4-year-old.

“She ran an unbelievable race to finish second in a Group 1 on her third ever start and she's an exciting filly for next year for sure.”
