Verbal Rallies To Win Cecil B. DeMille Stakes At Del Mar

Verbal made the trip from New York to California a winning one, the son of Flintshire's stretch drive putting him on the wire first in the Grade 3 Cecil B. DeMille Stakes at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club.

On the final day of the Bing Crosby season at the Del Mar, Calif., racetrack, the field of 10 broke evenly from the starting gate, Groovy Huey showing his head first with Get Back Goldie second as they approached the first turn. The two leaders put seven lengths between them and the field on the backstretch, with Barsabas third and Cabo Spirit in fourth.

Approaching the far turn, Get Back Goldie assumed the lead, with Barsabas and Cabo Spirit back in second and third as Groovy Huey fell out of contention. Jose Ortiz moved Verbal from midpack on the backstretch to fourth on the far turn, going four-wide into the stretch. Cabo Spirit took the lead in the stretch, with Barsabas and Verbal driving down the center of the track. The favored Verbal hit the front in the last strides before the wire, taking the G3 by a half-length. Barsabas was second, with Cabo Spirit third. Lottery Pick, Optimising, Derecho Dandy, Khantaro d'Oro, Stotland, Get Back Goldie, and Groovy Huey rounded out the order of finish.

Verbal paid $4.00, $3.20, and $2.60. Barsabas paid $31.20 and $12.80. Cabo Spirit paid $5.00.

“He won easy last time, but that was against maidens. He was running against winners today, much better horses. I knew there would be speed in the race so, even though I had the outside post, I was able to drop over and save some ground. He came running when it counted. The boss (trainer Chad Brown) knows how to spot a horse. He had it right today,” jockey Jose Ortiz told the Del Mar Press Office after the race.

“I liked the way he was coming into this race, he's been training well. It worked out like we thought. He's got a really good turn of foot and he got there. We didn't have much luck yesterday, but this is a really good start for today,” Juan Hernandez, assistant to trainer Chad Brown, said after the Cecil B. DeMille.

Bred in Kentucky by owner Juddmonte Farms, Verbal is out of the Bernardini mare Endless Chat. The G3 Cecil B. DeMille is Verbal's second win in two career starts for career earnings of $109,500.

Obligatory Gives Rosario Fourth Win On Saturday’s Card With Chilukki Victory

A contentious early pace and a patient ride from jockey Joel Rosario gave Obligatory everything she needed for an easy victory in the Grade 3 Chilukki at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky.

With three wins already under his belt Saturday, Rosario guided Obligatory to fifth, 6 1/2 lengths back of Princess Causeway who veered out at the break and then zoomed to the lead coming out of the chute at Churchill Downs. Quick early fractions of :22.77 and :45.98 left Princess Causeway unable to hold on to the lead as the field entered the far turn, with Miss Bigly and Matera passing the former leader as they approached the top of the stretch.

Rosario took Obligatory four-wide on the turn as Miss Bigly took the lead early in the stretch. His patience paid off as Obligatory had plenty left to pass first Matera and then Miss Bigly, taking over the front halfway down the stretch and getting a comfortable three-length lead before Rosario powered her down to take the Chilukki by two and a half lengths. Bred in Kentucky by her owner Juddmonte Farms, Obligatory is by Curlin out of the Macho Uno mare Uno Duo. She is trained by Bill Mott. With her win in the G3 Chilukki, the 3-year-old filly has three wins in eight starts in 2021, for a lifetime record of 9-3-2-0 and career earnings of $711,514.

Tacitus To Stand At Taylor Made Stallions Upon Retirement

Multiple graded stakes winner Tacitus, an earner of more than $3.7 million and a son of perennial leading sire Tapit out of champion older female and five-time Grade 1 winner Close Hatches, will stand stud duty at Taylor Made Stallions at the conclusion of his racing career, the farm announced today.

Owned in partnership by Don Alberto, Juddmonte Farms, and Taylor Made Stallions, Tacitus will stand for a fee of $10,000 S&N; a breeding right program will also be offered.

A Juddmonte Farms homebred trained by Bill Mott, Tacitus is a three-time graded stakes winner who has banked $3,767,350, while recording six triple-digit Beyer Speed Figures. Tacitus came out running as a juvenile and broke his maiden in his second career start at two. From that point forward, Tacitus competed exclusively in graded stakes races for the next three years.

“I knew he had to be a champion when I first jumped on him,” jockey Jose Ortiz told US Racing. “I love everything about him. He's got a great stride, and he's very athletic.”

In 2019, Tacitus enjoyed a spectacular sophomore season, winning the $400,000 Grade 2 Tampa Bay Derby in his 3-year-old debut, stopping the clock in the stakes-record time of 1:41.90 for the 1 1/16 miles, just .15 off the track record. Tacitus overcame a troubled trip in winning the $750,000 G2 Wood Memorial Stakes —the same race his sire won—in just his fourth career start.

In racking up impressive back-to-back graded victories in Derby preps at two different tracks, Tacitus vaulted to the top of the leaderboard for the Kentucky Derby. A game third in the Kentucky Derby, defeating Grade 1 winners Improbable, Game Winner, and War of Will, Tacitus remained one of the top 3-year-olds of his generation, finishing second in the Belmont Stakes and the G1 Travers Stakes (G1).

In 2020 at age four, Tacitus proved an ultra-impressive winner of the 1 1/4-mile G2 Suburban Stakes at Belmont Park, overpowering his rivals for an 8 3/4-length victory under a hand ride. His final time for the 1 1/4 miles was a lively 1:59.51.

By a three-time champion sire, Tacitus is produced from Juddmonte's 2014 champion older female Close Hatches, one of the leading fillies of her generation and a direct descendant of 1982 Broodmare of the Year Best in Show. Also trained by Mott, Close Hatches, in her championship season in 2014, recorded successive Grade 1 victories in the Apple Blossom Handicap, the Ogden Phipps Handicap, and the Personal Ensign Stakes en route to career earnings of $2,707,300. Her additional Grade 1 wins came in the 2013 G1 Mother Goose Stakes and that year's G1 Cotillion Stakes.

Boltaway Leads Third Session Of Tattersalls Autumn Horses In Training Sale

The third session of the Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale continued the remarkable momentum of the second with exceptional trade resulting in turnover in excess of 10 million guineas, breaking the record aggregate for the sale. Ten lots sold for over 200,000 guineas and the clearance rate was a remarkable 93 percent.

The Juddmonte draft is a customary highlight of the Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale and it provided the top lot on the third day of this year's renewal when Boltaway was knocked down to Najd Stud and Peter and Ross Doyle for 400,000 guineas.

The 3-year-old Dubawi colt is out of the four-time Grade 1 winning mare Proviso and has shown smart form himself with four wins from six starts for Roger Charlton this season, earning a 'Timeform' rating of 100.

Najd Stud representative Saad bin Mishraf commented:

“We tried to buy this horse privately but that wasn't possible and so we waited for this sale. It's proved to be one of the toughest markets I have ever seen for horses in training. He's by Dubawi, whose offspring have succeeded in Saudi Arabia and out of a Dansili mare, and Dansilis have done very well in Saudi Arabia so he had the right pedigree. He also had size and good feet for racing on dirt.

“He has not been over-raced and he vetted 100 percent, which was one of the main reasons for trying to buy him. All the races in Saudi Arabia are on the up, with better prize money sometimes increased by four or five times. There are races for locally-bred horses and imported horses, and while we don't have many imported horses the ones we have are very good.”

The Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale continues with the fourth and final session at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 28.
