Tacitus Overpowers The Competition In Belmont’s Suburban

Juddmonte Farms' Tacitus rewarded the patience of Hall of Fame conditioner Bill Mott with a smashing return to the winner's circle in the 134th running of Saturday's Grade 2, $200,000 Suburban for older horses over the Belmont Park main track.

The 1 1/4-mile event rounded out an action-packed program of five graded stakes on Runhappy Met Mile Day at beautiful Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y., which was spearheaded by a wire-to-wire triumph from Vekoma in the Grade 1 Runhappy Met Mile.

Tacitus, a gray or roan son of multiple champion-producing stallion Tapit, arrived at the Suburban off a fourth-place finish in the Grade 2 Oaklawn Handicap on May 2, where he chased a leisurely pace over a speed-favoring track and made a four-wide move at the top of the stretch, closing enough ground to get fourth. Guided by Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez, who piloted E Dubai to a 2002 Suburban score, Tacitus broke sharply from his inside post and took back off a tepid pace set by 57-1 longshot Parsimony, who produced an opening quarter-mile in 24.68 seconds with eight-time stakes winner Mr. Buff just to his outside in second over the fast main track.

Parsimony and Mr. Buff raced alongside one another and extended their advantage to two lengths through a half-mile in 48.36 seconds with Tacitus in fourth just to the inside of Moretti. Around the far turn, Tacitus began making up ground under no urging from Velazquez and made a three-wide move through three-quarters in 1:10.82.

At the quarter-pole, Mr. Buff gave way while Parsimony was under an all-out drive by jockey Kendrick Carmouche. Velazquez remained cool, calm and collected aboard Tacitus who effortlessly went by the pacesetter around the three-sixteenths pole and glided home to a 8 ¾-length score in a final time of 1:59.51. Moretti closed to get second, a neck to the better of Parsimony in third.

Just Whistle, Mr. Buff and 2019 Belmont Stakes winner Sir Winston completed the order of finish. Forewarned was a late scratch in the post parade.

“He was going comfortable the whole way,” said Velazquez, who notched a fifth stakes victory this meet aboard Tacitus. “We had a little pressure in the first part of the race and little by little we kept reaching back and reaching back. I just wanted to be a little further back. Once we passed the five-eighths pole, I put my hands down and he got into a great rhythm. From there on, I knew he was comfortable, and in a position to win.”

The Suburban was a first trip to the winner's circle for Tacitus since taking the Grade 2 Wood Memorial in April 2019 at Aqueduct. He followed that victory with five straight placings against graded stakes company, including a third in the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby and runner-up finishes in the Grade 1 Belmont Stakes, Grade 2 Jim Dandy and Grade 1 Runhappy Travers. Tacitus also owns a graded stakes triumph in the Grade 2 Tampa Bay Derby last March at Tampa Bay Downs.

In his 4-year-old debut, Tacitus ran fifth in the inaugural edition of the Group 1 Saudi Cup on February 29 at King Abdulaziz Racecourse.

“We've put a lot into this horse,” said Mott, who previously won the Suburban with Wekiva Springs (1996) and Flat Out (2013). “We took him to some big races, and he's run some good races. We took him halfway around the world earlier this year looking for something like that [winning effort] in Saudi and in Dubai before they canceled the race [Dubai World Cup].”

Perhaps it was a change of equipment that made a difference for Tacitus, who raced with blinkers on for Saturday's race.

“It seems to make him level off a little more and stay in the bridle a little more,” Mott said.

The win marked a second stakes triumph on Runhappy Met Mile Day for Mott and Velazquez, who teamed up earlier on the card with Frank's Rockette to a victory in the Grade 3 Victory Ride.

Hall of Fame jockey Javier Castellano had no complaints regarding his trip aboard runner-up Moretti.

“Beautiful trip. That's just where we wanted to be; behind the two speeds. The race set up beautifully. We were just second-best today. Tacitus is a great horse,” Castellano said.

Returning $4.20 for a $2 win bet, Tacitus banked $110,000 in victory while enhancing his lifetime earnings to $2,817,500.

Named after an ancient Roman senator, the Kentucky homebred Tacitus is out of 2014 Champion Older Filly Close Hatches and is a direct descendant of 1982 Broodmare of the Year Best In Show.

Live racing returns on Sunday afternoon with a 10-race card. First post is 1:15 p.m. Eastern.

Classic-Placed Hofburg To Enter Stud In Brazil

Hofburg, a classic-placed stakes winner, will begin his stud career at Haras Santa Maria de Araras in Brazil, according to the South American racing publication Turf Diario.

The 5-year-old son of Tapit raced as a homebred for Juddmonte Farms, and was trained by Bill Mott, winning three of 11 starts for earnings of $554,300.

After breaking his maiden in his 3-year-old debit, Hofburg tested the Grade 1 Florida Derby, where he finished second to Audible. This qualified him for the 2018 Kentucky Derby, where he gained ground in the stretch after a rough trip to finish seventh behind eventual Triple Crown winner Justify.

Hofburg's gaining trip in the Derby, paired with Tapit's growing tradition of success in the Belmont Stakes, led the colt to go off as the second choice in the third leg of the Triple Crown, where he ultimately finished third. He came back a month later to win the Curlin Stakes at Saratoga, then ran fourth in the G1 Pennsylvania Derby.

The horse racing sparingly after his 3-year-old season, winning a Saratoga allowance optional claiming race in his lone start at four, then going unplaced in a pair of graded stakes earlier this year.

Hofburg is out of the placed Touch Gold mare Soothing Touch, making him a half-brother to Grade 1 winner Emollient and Grade 2-placed stakes winner Courtier.

Other notable North American horses that have resided at Haras Santa Maria de Araras include Put It Back – the sire of Brazilian Triple Crown winner and current Calumet Farm stallion Bal a Bali – and Wild Event.

Well-Bred Trapezium Sells For $327,000 to Top Keeneland’s Inaugural Online Select Horses of Racing Age Sale

Trapezium, a half-sister to multiple graded stakes winner Honorable Duty, sold for $327,000 to St. Elias Stables to top Keeneland's inaugural June Select Horses of Racing Age Sale, the first stand-alone online auction held Tuesday via the new Keeneland Digital Sales Ring platform.

Consigned by Juddmonte Farms, Trapezium is a 3-year-old filly by Hard Spun out of the A.P. Indy mare Mesmeric. Her second dam, Grade 1 winner Toussaud, is the dam of Belmont Stakes winner and sire Empire Maker and Group 1 winner and sire Chester House. Trapezium finished second in her last start, a maiden special weight race at Gulfstream Park on Feb. 2. She was cataloged as a racing or broodmare prospect.

“Trapezium comes from one of (Juddmonte's) elite families,” Juddmonte Farms general manager Garrett O'Rourke said. “I wasn't sure in this format buyers would recognize her value. I was wrong. Our phone began ringing very early on; people were paying attention, doing their homework and she sold accordingly.

“The online sale format was well received and embraced by buyers,” O'Rourke added. “There were some growing pains with registering to bid, etc., but buyers adapted quickly. It was productive and went very smoothly – to be able to pull together buyers and players and turn the sale around in such a short time. We needed to move some horses and it was a big help to us.”

John P. Sparkman, pedigree consultant for St. Elias Stables, said plans call for Trapezium to train in New York with Todd Pletcher.

“She jumped out at us because of her pedigree,” Sparkman said. “Most of the Juddmonte horses are grass-oriented. This family is mostly dirt-oriented, with Empire Maker and Honest Lady, and that is primarily what we are looking for. Tom Evans of Trackside Farm was able to go by and look at her for us and he liked her. So that sealed the deal.”

Today's one-day sale grossed $829,500 for 12 horses, for an average of $69,125 and a median of $32,750. Summary results of the sale are available by clicking here.

“The successful launch of the Digital Sales Ring marks a milestone in Keeneland's storied auction history because it enables us to deliver another high-quality sales option to our clients,” Keeneland vice president of racing and sales Bob Elliston said. “This sale met the needs of the market by providing buyers, as tracks reopen around the country, the opportunity to purchase proven, ready-made racehorses from top-flight consignors.”

Bringing the day's second-highest price was Eloquent Speaker, a 3-year-old filly by Flatter out of the Broken Vow mare Spoken Not Broken, sold for $200,000 to Anthony Mitola. Offered as a racing prospect, the filly won her maiden at Belmont on June 12. She was consigned by Niall Brennan Stables, agent.

Juddmonte Farms also consigned a pair of 3-year-olds by Into Mischief that brought bids of $65,000 each. Steven W. Young, agent, purchased Oak Room, a colt out of French stakes winner Privet Hedge, by First Defence. Valletta, a filly out of the winning Tapit mare West Riding, was bought by Big Dom Racing Stable.

Keeneland Online Auction Tuesday

Keeneland will host its first-ever online auction when its digital sales ring opens for bidding at 9 a.m. Tuesday. The initial June Select Horses of Racing Age Sale features an offering of 31 horses and, while bidding begins on all lots at 9 a.m., closing on each lot is staggered. Bidding on Juddmonte Farms’ Breithorn (Into Mischief) (hip 1) will close at approximately 2 p.m. and bidding on Summer Love (Summer Front) (hip 37), a recent maiden winner and half to stakes winner Mihos (Cairo Prince) consigned by Niall Brennan, will close at approximately 3 p.m.

Hidden Brook will consign eight horses of racing age to the online auction on behalf of D J Stable and partners.

“Horses in training or of racing age is the first step in trying this out as people don’t actually see the horses,” said Hidden Brook’s Dan Hall. “This is the first level of it and we are going to give it a try and see how it goes.”

Each catalogue page includes a location where the horse can be inspected. The Hidden Brook offerings have been available for inspection at Hidden Brook’s Florida farm for the last 10 days.

“There hasn’t been a lot of action that way,” Hall said of inspections. “But with racehorses, people are primarily shopping based on the PPs and they can see what the purchase price was as yearlings and as 2-year-olds and in the vetting. Bidding online is just an advanced level of claiming, so to speak, because you have the vetting in front of you as well.”

With the many disruptions to the sales season brought on this year by the coronavirus pandemic, Keeneland moved up the launch of its online auction platform to accommodate people impacted by travel restrictions. The new format provides another outlet for sellers in uncertain times, according to Hall.

“I would still prefer seeing them on the sales grounds,” Hall said. “It is the best possible way to sell a horse, but given what we’ve been dealt this year, this is another avenue to try and see how successful we can be at it.”

Among horses up for sale Tuesday is Tempers Rising (Bayern) (hip 25), runner-up in the Mar. 21 GII TwinSpires.com Fair Grounds Oaks. Also in the catalogue is Juddmonte homebred 3-year-old Juror (Tapit) (hip 8), runner-up in his June 1 debut at Tampa Bay Downs; 2-year-old filly Queen Arella (Speightster) (hip 17), a first-out winner at Gulfstream Park May 29; and Wondrwherecraigis (Munnings) (hip 30), a two-for-two sophomore gelding.

Buyers have two options for bidding Tuesday, either direct bidding manually throughout the sale or by establishing a maximum bid with the software automatically bidding on the buyer’s behalf up to the top price.
