Tattersalls Autumn Horses In Training Sale Catalog Now Online

The 4-year-old Listed winning colt Alignak looks set to be amongst the highlights of the four day Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale which takes place Monday, Oct. 26 to Thursday, Oct. 29. The world's largest horses in training sale numbers 1,617 lots and can be viewed online at www.tattersalls.com.

An effortless winner of the listed Stand Cup Stakes at Chester for Sir Michael Stoute on his latest start, Alignak currently boasts an official rating of 110 and a Timeform rating of 118.

The fourth stakes winner out of the champion racemare Albanova, Alignak is the latest smart performer from Kirsten Rausing's exceptional Alruccaba family. Alignak is one of a 21 lot consignment from Sir Michael Stoute's Freemason Lodge Stables which also features the highly rated trio of Galata Bridge, Sextant, and Solid Stone.

The world's largest sale of horses in training, from which 2020 Group 1 winners Fierce Impact and River Boyne were purchased, features more than 90 group and listed performers including 2020 scorers Cormorant, Dubai Station, Maystar, Royal Dornoch, and Withhold. Following in the footsteps of 2019 sale-topper Summer Sands there are also several top-class 2-year-olds cataloged including Group 2 Coventry Stakes winner and Group 1 Phoenix Stakes runner-up The Lir Jet, alongside dual Group 2 runner-up Devious Company and the listed winner Acklam Express.

This year's Australian Group 2 winner Imaging, purchased at last year's Autumn Horses in Training Sale, provided yet another reminder of why the Juddmonte consignment is an annual highlight of the Autumn Horses in Training Sale and the 25 strong Juddmonte team, which sells on Wednesday, Oct. 28, looks as enticing as ever.

The exciting 3-year-old colt Emissary and high-class older horses Blue Mist, Derevo, and Society Lion, all with a Timeform rating of over 105, look set to attract plenty of attention. The consignment from Ballydoyle Stables also retains its traditional strength and depth with 48 representatives including the group winning quartet of 3-year-olds Cormorant, Nobel Prize, Royal Nornoch, and Royal Lytham amongst 12 group and listed performers.

The largest consignment in the sale is Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum's ever popular Shadwell draft with 87 lots cataloged including 18 horses rated over 95 by Timeform. The Castlebridge Consignment as ever offers a sizeable contingent of 81 with the recent Listed winner Aztec Parade and the highly rated Lord Rapscallion, both trained in Ireland by Johnny Murtagh, set to star. Roger Charlton's promising 3-year-old colt Bullfinch, sold as part of the Waddesdon Stud dispersal with an official rating of 103 and a Timeform rating of 111p, also looks likely to be one of the most eagerly sought after lots.

The largest trainer's consignment is the 69 strong team from Richard Hannon's powerful East Everleigh Stables which includes the 118 Timeform-rated Listed winner Urban Icon who ran a fine race to be beaten only two and a half lengths in the Group 2 Park Stakes at Doncaster on his last start. Mark Johnston's Kingsley Park has 64 catalogued, Richard Fahey's Musley Bank has a team of 46 and Roger Varian's Carlburg Stables and Andrew Balding's Park House Stables each offer 35 lots. Irish trainers including Jim Bolger, Jessie Harrington, John Murphy, Donnacha O'Brien, Joseph O'Brien, Michael O'Callaghan, John Oxx, Fozzy Stack and Dermot Weld are also well-represented.

Brown Stablemates Viadera And Blowout Could Face Off Again In Grade 1 Matriarch

Trainer Chad Brown reported that his one two-finishers of Saturday's Grade 3 Noble Damsel, Viadera and Blowout, both emerged from their efforts in good shape and will likely square off once more in the Grade 1, $300,000 Matriarch on November 29 at Del Mar.

Owned by Juddmonte Farms, Viadera notched her second stakes victory in her third start in the United States in the one mile test over the Widener turf, where she was placed at the rear of the field early on, saved ground to the inside and prevailed to get up at the right time by a neck under jockey Joel Rosario.

“He rode a really good race,” said Brown, who secured a fifth straight victory in the Noble Damsel. “He was able to save some ground and she was able to get up at the last jump.”

Rosario also piloted Brown-trained Off Limits (2017) and Uni (2018) to Noble Damsel triumphs, both of whom won the Matriarch at the end of their respective years.

Viadera, a 4-year-old bay daughter of Bated Breath, arrived at the Noble Damsel off a narrow victory in the De La Rose on July 17 at Saratoga, where she defeated stable mate Noor Sahara (fourth in the Noble Damsel) by a neck. A victory in the Matriarch would give Juddmonte Farms a record seventh triumph in the race after previously winning with champions Ryafan (1997), Heat Haze (2003), and Intercontinental (2004).

But it was Blowout who Brown said impressed him the most. Peter Brant's consistent daughter of Dansili out of Group 1 winner Beauty Parlour set torrid fractions on the front end, and the favorite still had enough left to hang on for second.

“Those were just insane fractions,” Brown said. “It showed the heart and the talent that she has to nearly still pull it off. It was remarkable to me. I was most impressed with her. Both horses ran terrific and so far, they look good. If they do well this next month, we'll point them both to the Matriarch.”

Never off the board and never beaten more than three-quarters of a length in 10 lifetime starts, Blowout is still in search of her first graded stakes win but scored triumphs in the Wild Applause last June and the Pebbles last September going one mile over the Widener turf.

“She's very consistent,” Brown said. “She's been very unlucky in a couple of her losses, but she's a developing horse with a lot of ability and super well-bred as well. I'll believe she'll have her day winning a graded stakes.”

Earlier on the card Brown saddled the Brant-owned American West to a debut victory going a one-turn mile over the Belmont main track, where she earned a 65 Beyer Speed Figure for the effort. The juvenile daughter of Curlin is out of stakes placed Jacaranda, who is a half-sister to leading second crop sire Constitution.

“She came out of the race well, we'll talk to Peter Brant about what we'll do with her and just see how she trains,” Brown said.

Bred in Kentucky by Alpha Delta Stable, American West was purchased for $925,000 from the Mill Ridge Sales consignment at the 2019 Keeneland September Yearling Sale.

‘Yet To See The Best Of Her’: Cox Sending Bonny South To Black-Eyed Susan

Trainer Brad Cox said Juddmonte Farms' homebred Munnings filly Bonny South was rerouted from the Kentucky Oaks (G1) once it was announced in mid-August that the $250,000, Black-Eyed Susan (G2) would be on the Preakness undercard at Pimlico racecourse in Baltimore, Md.

“That was the spot that made the most sense, against 3-year-olds fillies, he said.

Cox won the Kentucky Oaks anyway with 15-1 shot Shedaresthedevil upsetting Swiss Skydiver and odds-on favorite Gamine. He said the fact that he had the Indiana Oaks (G3) winner in the Churchill Downs race had no bearing on Fair Grounds Oaks (G2) winner Bonny South, who was coming off a second behind Swiss Skydiver in Saratoga's Alabama (G1) at 1 1/4 miles on Aug. 15.

“The biggest thing with her not running in the Kentucky Oaks was coming back in 20 days, the quality of the race. It was a very, very good race,” Cox said. “Ultimately they made the decision to not run. The timing wasn't quite there. Since the Alabama, she's done really, really well.”

Bonny South worked five-eighths of a mile in 1:01 under jockey Florent Geroux Saturday morning at Churchill Downs. Cox timed her galloping out six furlongs in a strong 1:13 4/5, saying afterward, “She went fantastic. She's doing great. She's maturing. She's still somewhat lightly raced, only run six times in her life. I think we have yet to see the best of her. Hopefully she'll take a step forward. I don't know what's running in there yet, but I'd have to think she's one of the top choices.”

Cox edged two-time defending champion Steve Asmussen to collect Preakness weekend's trainer participation bonus last year, collecting $50,000. The bonus, which totals $100,000 is offered to trainers based on horses' performances in stakes races. Cox earned top prize by winning the Miss Preakness (G3) with eventual 3-year-old filly and female sprint champion Covfefe, the Allaire duPont Distaff (G3) with Mylady Curlin, second in the Black-Eyed Susan with Ulele, as well as third (Owendale) and fourth (Warrior's Charge) in the Preakness in the trainer's Triple Crown debut.

Cox has some excellent horses under consideration this year but said no final decisions have been made beyond Bonny South. The possibilities from his barn include Juliet Foxtrot for the Gallorette (G3), Mundaye Call for the Miss Preakness, and Landeskog in the Frank DeFrancis Memorial Dash (G3).

“I don't know if I'll have as many this year as last year,” he said, adding that the bonus doesn't impact running horses “but once you start running, you start watching. That's how it works out. But really, it comes down to whether the horse fits or not. We just had a really good weekend last year.”
