Kind, Dam Of European Stars Frankel And Noble Mission, Dies At Age 20

It is with regret that Juddmonte Farms announces the passing of Kind (Danehill – Rainbow Lake), the dam of Group 1 winners Frankel and Noble Mission, on March 8 due to complications after foaling a colt by Kingman on March 2.

Kind was a second-generation Juddmonte homebred. Her family came into the Juddmonte Stud Book through the mare Rockfest – who was purchased privately in 1983 as part of a bloodstock package from the John 'Jock' Hay Whitney dispersal.

When mated with Rainbow Quest, Rockfest produced the Lancashire Oaks winner Rainbow Lake who went on to compile an enviable record as a broodmare as the dam of three group/graded stakes winners: G1 winner Powerscourt, G2 winner Riposte and G3 winner Last Train. However, it was her dual listed-winning daughter Kind who was to have the biggest impact.

Kind's legacy is to have five stallion sons at stud and her daughter Joyeuse and granddaughters Jubiloso and Jovial are in the broodmare band. Her 3-year-old Galileo filly Chiasma is currently in training with John Gosden. Due to her rare achievement of producing two Group 1 winners and a further group winner in Bullet Train, Kind's name is on the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities' International List of Protected Names.

Juddmonte's UK stud director Simon Mockridge commented: “I cannot thank the Rossdales and Juddmonte team enough for the tireless care they have given Kind. To many, she will rightfully always be best remembered as the dam of Frankel and Noble Mission, to us at Juddmonte she will always be Kind by name and kind by nature.”

Frankel’s Dam Kind Dies From Foaling Complications

Kind (Ire) (Danehill-Rainbow Lake {GB}, by Rainbow Quest), the dam of the undefeated champion Frankel (GB) (Galileo {Ire}), passed away from foaling complications on Monday, Juddmonte announced. Also the dam of fellow Group 1 winner Noble Mission (GB) (Galileo {Ire}), the second generation Juddmonte homebred and listed winner was 20. Her final foal, a colt by Kingman (GB), was foaled on Mar. 2.

Stud Director UK Simon Mockridge commented, “I cannot thank the Rossdales and Juddmonte team enough for the tireless care they have given Kind. To many she will rightfully always be best remembered as the dam of Frankel and Noble Mission, to us at Juddmonte she will always be Kind by name and Kind by nature.”

Foaled Apr. 21, 2001, Kind was sent to the yard of Roger Charlton and won a brace of listed races during three seasons on the racecourse. Her best showing was a third in the G3 Ballyogan S. in 2005 and she was retired with a mark of 13-6-0-4 and $132,320 in earnings. However, it was as a broodmare that she truly flourished.

Overall, she produced eight foals, six runners and five winners. Bullet Train (GB) (Sadler's Wells), a winner of the G3 Derby Trial, was Kind's first foal. She visited the court of Galileo (Ire) in 2007 and her best performer, the outstanding European Horse of the Year Frankel was the result. Besides that G1 2000 Guineas hero, Kind also produced three-time Group 1 winner Noble Mission (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) and the multiple stakes winner and dual group-placed Joyeuse (GB). The latter is already the dam of the G1 Coronation S. third Jubiloso (GB) (Shamardal) and the MSP Jovial (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}). Her 3-year-old Galileo filly is named Chiasma (Ire) and is in training with John Gosden. Kind's name is also on the IFHA's International List of Protected Names.

Barring her latest foal, the other five colts out of Kind have all found their way to stallion barns, with Frankel showing the way at Banstead Manor Stud for Juddmonte with great success. Bullet Train stands at Woodfield Farm Stud and Proconsul (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) is at Annshoon Stud, both in Ireland. Noble Mission, after spending several season at Lane's End Farm in Kentucky, is standing his first season in Japan, while the winning Morpheus (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) is at Haras de Toury in France.

Kind's second dam, the group-placed Rockfest (Stage Door Johnny), joined the Juddmonte broodmare band as a private purchase out of the John 'Jock' Hay Whitney dispersal and subsequently threw the G3 Lancashire Oaks heroine Rainbow Lake (GB) to the cover of Rainbow Quest. In addition to Kind, Rainbow Lake foaled Irish champion and GI Arlington Million scorer Powerscourt (GB) (Sadler's Wells), three-time Group 2 winner Riposte (GB) (Dansili {GB}) and Group 3 winner Last Train (GB) (Rail Link {GB}), second in the G1 Grand Prix de Paris.

Uncle Mo Filly ‘Trucks’ Home at Tampa, Becomes Rising Star

Sent off at debut odds of 19-10 for a purse-enhanced maiden at Tampa, Juddmonte homebred Lory (Uncle Mo–Principal Role, by Empire Maker) overwhelmed her rivals by 7 3/4 lengths to become a new 'TDN Rising Star.'

Clearly last into stride from the two hole, the bay quickly made up for lost time, accelerating all the way up into about fourth position as the field neared the entry to the far turn. Samy Camacho seized upon the opportunity to send Lory through an opening at the inside when pacesetting Summer Home (Outwork) began to get out about three furlongs for home, and Lory assumed control at the quarter pole. With a look over his shoulder, Camacho quickly ascertained that there was nothing that was going to trouble his mount and he geared her down for most of the final furlong, scoring by a margin that could have been into the double digits had she been allowed to extend whatsoever in the final stages.

Lory's dam was a four-time stakes winner and third in the G1 Nassau S. while under the care of Sir Henry Cecil in England and added a pair of graded placings for trainer Bill Mott once repatriated. The filly's second dam Interim (GB) (Sadler's Wells) won the 1995 GII La Prevoyante H. for Bobby Frankel and went on to produce GI Charles Whittingham Memorial S. winner Midships (Mizzen Mast) and GISP Staging Post (Pleasant Colony). Principal Role is the dam of the 2-year-old filly Roll Call (GB) (Into Mischief) and a British-bred yearling colt by Frankel (GB). Lory is bred on the cross over Unbridled responsible for Grade I winners Unbridled Mo and Outwork, and the Juddmonte braintrust went to $650,000 for an Uncle Mo colt out of the Empire Maker mare Lost Empire at Keeneland September in 2019.

‘An Exciting New Chapter’: Global Star Enable Confirmed In-Foal To Kingman

Two-time European Horse of the Year Enable was confirmed pregnant on Monday to fellow European Horse of the Year and top British sire Kingman. The announcement was made by the social media account of Juddmonte Farms, which owns and bred both horses.

Enable was retired in October, and plans were immediately announced that she would be bred to Kingman, a 10-year-old son of Invincible Spirit who stands at Barnstead Manor Stud in Suffolk, England. The mating took place on Feb. 14.

Enable, a 7-year-old daughter of Nathaniel, was named Europe's Cartier Horse of the Year in 2017 and 2019. She retired from a 19-race career, spanning five seasons, with 15 wins, including 11 Group 1 races and record earnings for a European-trained horse of £10.7 million (US$14,062,824).

Her global triumphs included two wins in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, an unprecedented three victories King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes, and the Breeders' Cup Turf. She became the only horse to win the Arc and the Breeders' Cup Turf in the same year during her 2018 campaign.

Kingman was named Europe's Horse of the Year and champion 3-year-old male in 2014 off a campaign that included Group 1 victories in the Irish 2,000 Guineas, St. James's Palace Stakes, Sussex Stakes, and Prix du Haras de Fresnay-le-Buffard – Jacques Le Marois.

Kingman's most notable runners include St. James's Palace Stakes winner Palace Pier and French 2,000 Guineas winner Persian King.
