$145,797 Pick 6 Carryover Thursday At Los Alamitos; Miyadi Saddles Three Winners Sunday

For the sixth time in the first seven days of the Los Angeles County Fair Winter Thoroughbred meet at Los Alamitos in Cypress, Calif., there will be a Pick 6 carryover when racing resumes Thursday.

The carryover will be a hefty $145,797 as no tickets were able to isolate six winners for the fourth consecutive racing day.

Three upsets in a row by Next Flight ($26.80) in the sixth, Synthesis ($24.40) and Loud Loud Music ($19.80) in the eighth triggered another carryover.

The Pick 6 will begin in Thursday's fourth race. Post time is 12:30 p.m. and scheduled post time for the fourth is 1:58 p.m. The pool could reach $500,000.

Trainer Steve Miyadi won three of the final four races Sunday with longshots, including 8-1 outsider Loud Loud Music in the $50,500 feature at Los Alamitos.

Unplaced in three previous starts on dirt, the 3-year-old daughter of Tizbud and the Bernstein mare Your Cheatin Heart rallied late to defeat Cheap Cheap Cheap and eight others in the optional claimer for fillies and mares bred or sired in California.

Owned by breeder Nick Alexander and ridden by Abel Cedillo, Loud Loud Music won for the third time in eight starts and the $28,800 payday pushed her earnings to $95,100. She paid $19.80, $7.60 and $5.

Cheap Cheap Cheap, the 7-2 second choice under jockey Flavien Prat, returned $4.60 and $3.40 while finishing 1 ½ lengths in front of 2-1 favorite Habobanero. The show price on Habobanero was $3.20.

Miyadi's other two victories were provided by Next Flight, who returned $26.80 in taking the sixth and first time starter Becca Taylor, also owned by breeder Alexander, who scored a 17-1 surprise in the ninth.

With four days remaining in the Los Angeles County Fair Winter Thoroughbred meet, Juan Hernandez holds an 8-7 lead over Cedillo and apprentice Jessica Pyfer in the jockey standings.

Miyadi has four wins to hold the edge in the trainer's race, one ahead of Hall of Famer Bob Baffert, Isidro Tamayo and Jonathan Wong.

Sensible Cat Pounces On California-Bred Foes In Soviet Problem

Sensible Cat provided trainer Carla Gaines with her first stakes win at Los Alamitos with a come-from-behind victory in the $100,000 Soviet Problem Stakes on Saturday.

A little more than five weeks after breaking her maiden at eight furlongs on the Del Mar turf course in her second career start, the 2-year-old daughter of Bluegrass Cat demonstrated Saturday she is equally adept on dirt at the Cypress, Calif., track.

Owned by Irvin Racing Stable and ridden by Juan Hernandez, Sensible Cat, the 9-2 fourth choice in the field of 10 California bred or sired fillies, was reserved off the early pace, rallied outside in the stretch, collared 5-2 favorite Dylans Wild Cat inside the eighth pole and went on to score by 1 ¾ lengths.

Out of the Street Sense mare Sensible Girl, Sensible Cat completed the mile in 1:37.94. She paid $11, $6.20 and $3.60 while increasing her earnings to $89,700.

“I thought it was tremendous,'' said Gaines. “We thought right away she was going to be a horse that wanted two turns. She had some mucus and was coughing this summer at Del Mar, so we missed getting her in a long race there, so we sprinted her once (a sixth-place finish Sept. 7) to get her some experience.

“We couldn't wait to get her going two turns and she responded (a turf victory Nov. 6 at Del Mar). It's nice to know we have the option of grass or dirt with her.''

The stakes success was the second in a span of six days for Hernandez, who used similar off-the-pace tactics to win the Grade 3 Bayakoa with Proud Emma Dec. 6.

“(Gaines) had me watch the replay of her last race and said to ride her that way,'' said Hernandez, the leading rider through the first six days of the meet with eight victories. “She broke well and I wanted to sit off the leaders.

“I wasn't sure if she was going to go by early in the stretch, but when I switched and hit her left-handed, she really responded.''

Governor Goteven, the second choice at 3-1, outfinished Dylans Wild Cat by a half-length for the place. She paid $5.00 and $3.60 while the show price on Dylans Wild Cat was $2.80.

I'm So Anna, Super Game, pacesetter Mucha Woman, Will Take a Kiss, Miss Glorious, Westward Breeze and Love Wins completed the order of finish.

Racing resumes Sunday at Los Alamitos. Post time is 12:30 p.m. Pacific.

Proud Emma Earns First Graded Stakes Victory In Bayakoa At Los Alamitos

Returning to dirt and getting the waiting ride she prefers, Proud Emma rallied to defeat Message and four others fillies and mares in the Grade 3, $100,0000 Bayakoa Stakes Sunday at Los Alamitos in Cypress, Calif.

Ridden by Juan Hernandez – substituting for the sidelined Hall of Famer Mike Smith – for trainer Peter Miller and owners Gem, Inc. and Tom Kagele, Proud Emma was reserved early off the pace set by Miss Stormy D and Stellar Sound, rallied outside and outfinished Message in the final sixteenth to prevail by a half-length.

The win was the sixth in 16 starts for the daughter of Include and the Proud Citizen mare Debutante Dreamer, who was bred in Kentucky by Brereton C. Jones. Her first success in a graded stakes increased her earnings to $304,658.

The 9-2 fourth choice in the field of six, Proud Emma paid $11.20, $3.80 and $2.40 while completing the 1 1/16 miles in 1:42.40. Message returned $4 and $2.40 while finishing six lengths clear of Stellar Sound, who rushed to battle for the lead and opened up two lengths after a half mile despite breaking last. The show price on Stellar Sound, the 13-10 choice, was $2.20. Miss Stormy D, Blue Diva and Donut Girl completed the order of finish.

“She ran great,'' said Kagele. “We've been trying to get a graded stakes with her and she finally did it for us today. She likes to sit off it and it set up very nicely for her. We were confident she would come running. She shows up every time, but this was awesome. We plan to keep her in training in 2021.''

This was Hernandez's first collaboration with Proud Emma, whose most recent win came when she finished in a dead heat with Message in the Tranquility Lake Aug. 28 at Del Mar.

“(Miller) told me to just sit behind the speed and she'd give me a strong run. She relaxed perfectly, then really responded when I asked her to get by (Message).''

Racing resumes Thursday at Los Alamitos. Post time is 1 p.m.

Beer Can Man Ready For His Close-Up After Cecil B. DeMille Victory

The 2-year-old colt Beer Can Man made his West Coast debut a winning one when he tracked the leaders early, then fired late to capture the seventh edition of the $103,000 Cecil B. DeMille Stakes Sunday at Del Mar.

The bay son of Can the Man scored by half a length under rider Juan Hernandez in the mile on turf run in 1:34.75. He had been competing at Indiana Downs in the Midwest where he'd won two of four starts, but was purchased privately and shipped to the barn of local trainer Mark Glatt.

Beer Can Man is now owned by the racing group called Little Red Feather Racing with their partner Sterling Stables. He picked up $60,000 as his share of the winning purse in the Grade 3 feature and now has a bankroll that reads $100,580.

Finishing second in the juvenile grass test was Sarah Kelly's Caisson and running third was Nguyen or Tran's Commander Khai.

“One jump out of there he came (back) to me,” said Hernandez. “He settled real well. I just found me spot tracking the leaders and I was happy. At the quarter pole I asked him to go and he did. He really fired. He didn't want to let horses go past him, either. He's a nice horse.”

The winner, an outsider in the 11-horse lineup, returned $41.20, $14.80 and $10.60 across the board. Caisson paid $6.20 and $7.20 and Commandeer Khai returned $10.40 to show.

“We've had him about six weeks,” said Glatt. “We entered him the first weekend of the meeting, thinking we could run then and then come back in this race. But that race didn't go. So (the owners) told me to get him ready to go a mile. I was a little skeptical to be honest, but the horse relaxed great, Juan (Hernandez) put a nice ride on him and he got the money.”

The stakes win was the third of the meet for rider Hernandez, but his first in the Cecil B. DeMille. He now has seven stakes wins at Del Mar.
