Quartet of Deep Impact Yearlings Anchor JRHA Select Sale Catalogue

The catalogue is now online for the 2021 JRHA Select Sale, which features four yearlings from the last crop of Deep Impact (Jpn) who died in July of 2019. Held at the Northern Horse Park near New Chitose Airport, the yearling session has 248 lots set to go through the ring on July 12, while there are 241 weanlings slated to sell on July 13.

Kicking off the yearling portion of the sale is a Deep Impact colt who will be offered as lot 1 and is out of the GII Black Eyed Susan S. heroine Go Maggie Go (Ghostzapper). There is also a Deep Impact filly out of GI Beverly D S. heroine Watsdachances (Ire) (Diamond Green {Fr}) and another filly by the late Shadai sire who is a daughter of the winning Jewel Maker (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}). Rounding out the foursome is another colt, a son of MG1SW Sweep Tosho (Jpn) (End Sweep), a winner of the G1 Takarazuka Kinen.

Naturally the sire power extends far beyond the four by Deep Impact, with a yearling colt out of G1 Golden Slipper S. heroine She Will Reign (Aus) (Manhattan Rain {Aus}) by Heart's Cry (Jpn) just one of the high class lots on offer. Heart's Cry's yearling colt out of G1 French 1000 Guineas winner Elusive Wave (Ire) (Elusive City) will also sell. Maurice (Jpn), whose progeny have been excelling this spring, is represented by a son of G1 Moyglare Stud S. winner Necklace (GB) (Darshaan {GB}). Among the blue blooded yearling by Lord Kanaloa (Jpn) is a daughter of GI Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup S. winner Hot Cha Cha (Cactus Ridge), as well as a son of Finest City (City Zip), who captured the GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint.

One of the choicest foals in the catalogue is a son of Lord Kanaloa (Jpn) out of MG1SW Yankee Rose (Aus) (All American {Aus}), who saluted in the G1 ATC Sires' Produce S. Down Under. A Kizuna (Jpn) filly, a daughter of G1 Irish Oaks heroine Covert Love (Ire) (Azamour {Ire}), will sell earlier in the foal session. Juddmonte's Frankel (GB) is represented by a son of GI Las Virgenes S. victress Callback (Street Sense), and there is also a colt by Triple Crown winner Justify out of MGISW Caledonia Road (Quality Road), successful in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies.

In 2020, despite the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, the yearling portion saw 229 sold of 249 offered (92%) for a gross of ¥10,428,000,000 (US$95,703,618/£67,742,999/€78,399,969). A brown colt (lot 114) by Deep Impact topped the sale at ¥510,000,000 (US$4,766,356/£3,313,198/€3,834,218). The average was ¥45,537,118 (US$417,984/£295,903/€342,353) and the median was ¥31,000,000 (US$284,548/£201,440/€233,068).

For the 2020 foal session, 203 foals sold from 226 through the ring (90%). The aggregate was ¥8,333,000,000 (US$76,486,200/£54,156,140/€62,649,703). Heart's Cry (Jpn)'s son (lot 365) of Hilda's Passion (Canadian Frontier) brought top dollar at the foal session when knocked down for ¥380,000,000 (US$3,551,402/£2,469,643/€2,856,986). The average was ¥41,049,261 (US$376,822/£266,781/€308,634) and the median was ¥29,000,000 (US$266,213/£188,436/€218,040).

Terzetto Claims Trophy at Nakayama

Deep Impact (Jpn)'s Terzetto (Jpn) closed from off the pace to win the G3 Lord Derby Challenge Trophy at Nakayama on Saturday. The 4-year-old filly brought her record to five-for-six with the score.

Third choice at 5-1, Terzetto raced well off the pace set by My Style (Jpn) (Heart's Cry {Jpn}). The field was well strung out due to a demanding pace, with the first half-mile covered in :45.60. She began to edge closer nearing the far turn and swung out four deep to challenge with a quarter mile remaining. Rallying widest of all, Terzetto sped past My Style inside the final 100 metres to win by a length. Catedral (Jpn) (Heart's Cry {Jpn}) was second, a neck to the good of Bom Servico (Jpn) (Daiwa Major {Jpn}). My Style held fourth another three-quarters of a length back.

A Nakayama debut winner in December of 2019, Terzetto was third there last March stepped up to 2000 metres, but returned to winning ways cut back to a mile at Niigata in August of 2020. Two more victories at that trip in Tokyo followed-on Nov. 1 and on Jan. 31. The Lord Derby Challenge Trophy was her first time trying black-type.

Pedigree Notes

After Terzetto's victory, the late Deep Impact is now the sire of 172 black-type winners, 138 at group level. The 4-year-old filly is the first instance of a stakes winner by the former Shadai resident out of a Danehill Dancer mare. That past Coolmore Stud sire is responsible for 73 group winners and 133 black-type winners overall.

A winner of an 1200-metre sloppy dirt affair as a 3-year-old, Raddolcendo has three winners from four to race, with the Lord Derby Challenge Trophy heroine her best to date. She has a 2-year-old colt by Orfevre (Jpn), a yearling colt by Daiwa Major (Jpn) and was bred to Duramente (Jpn) last spring.

Raddolcendo, purchased by Katsumi Yoshida in utero for $900,000 at the 2009 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale, is a half-sister to UAE highweight and G1 Dubai Turf hero Real Steel (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}), as well as G1 Japanese Oaks victress Loves Only You (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}), the SW & MGSP Prodigal Son (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) and the SP Langley (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}). Third dam Monevassia (Mr. Prospector) was a full-sister to French Classic hero and influential sire Kingmambo (Mr. Prospector), the duo just to of a bevy of top runners out of stellar racemare and blue hen producer Miesque (Nureyev).

Loves Only You Strikes in Kyoto Kinen

Loves Only You (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) conquered all her rivals in the G2 Kyoto Kinen on Valentine's Day at Hanshin.

Wearing a full hood, the 4-5 crowd's pick found a good spot in a tracking fourth one off the fence as Happy Grin (Jpn) (Lohengrin {Jpn}) threw down splits of :23.10 for the quarter and :47.20 for the half-mile. The field was well strung out due to the demanding pace, but pilot Yuga Kawada was calm aboard the 2019 G1 Japanese Oaks winner. After seven panels in 1:23.20, Happy Grin relinquished the lead to the stalking Stay Foolish (Jpn) (Stay Gold {Jpn}) and Loves Only You was poised three deep to pounce. Asked at the head of the lane, she rallied in tandem with Danburite (Jpn) (Rulership {Jpn}) to her inside before making her own way to the front and winning by 1 1/4 lengths with ears pricked. Stay Foolish was a half-length to the good of Danburite at the line.

Loves Only You was undefeated in her first four starts culminating in her Oaks tally, and was third in the G1 Queen Elizabeth II Cup in November of 2019.Winless in 2020 from five appearances, she was third two back in the Queen Elizabeth II Cup again last fall and was 10th in the G1 Arima Kinen on Dec. 27. Her next intended start is the G1 Dubai Sheema Classic at Meydan on Mar. 27.

The much missed Deep Impact has 47 Group 1 winners, Loves Only You among them. In addition, his total number of group winners is 135 and his mark of overall black-type winners stands at 169 worldwide. Storm Cat has sired the dams of 291 black-type winners, 143 at group level, with 43 Group 1 winners. Loves Only Me is one of eight top-level winners by Deep Impact out of a Storm Cat mare.

Loves Only You is one of three black-type winners and the second Group 1 winner after UAE highweight and G1 Dubai Turf hero Real Steel (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) from her unraced dam. She is also a full-sister to SW & MGSP Prodigal Son (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) and the SP Langley (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}). Since foaling the winner, Loves Only Me has the winning 4-year-old filly Love You Live (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}), a 2-year-old colt by Deep Impact (Jpn) and a yearling colt by Duramente (Jpn). Familiar Names Front and Center at JRHA Select Yearling Sale

As reported in more detail by European Editor Emma Berry in Tuesday’s TDN European Edition, members of the final crop of the late Deep Impact (Jpn) predictably dominated the yearling section of the JRHA Select Sale Monday on the island of Hokkaido, accounting for the day’s top six sellers and eight of the top nine. Lot 114, the second Japanese foal from Sheave (Mineshaft)–the dam of GI Kentucky Oaks winner Cathryn Sophia (Street Boss)–led the way on a record final bid of ¥510 million ($4,766,356), as the offspring of American-bred and -raced mares acquired by the Yoshida family lit up the board one after the next.

Sheave, an unraced daughter of GSW & GISP Belterra (Unbridled), was bred by the late Bob Manfuso and was carrying a full-sister to Cathryn Sophia when she was acquired privately and exported to Japan. In February 2017, she produced Sharie al Malika (Jpn), who was a close second on debut in a Nakayama dirt maiden this past March. Sheave is the dam of the 2-year-old colt Satono Sky Turf (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) and her colt foal by Heart’s Cry (Jpn) sells Tuesday as lot 383.

The session’s second-dearest offering at ¥400 million ($3,738,318) was lot 56, a colt out of Forever Darling (Congrats), who won the 2016 GII Santa Ynez S. for owner/trainer Richard Baltas and partners before continuing her career in the colors of Katsumi Yoshida. Forever Darling is a daughter of MSW & MGISP Darling My Darling (Deputy Minister), whose half-brother Zenno Rob Roy (Jpn) (Sunday Silence) won the 2004 G1 Japan Cup en route to Horse of the Year honors. Forever Darling’s first produce, Mon Favori (Jpn) (Frankel {GB}), won a newcomers’ event on turf over 1200 meters June 20 at Hakodate, scoring by five lengths in 1:08.7 (see below, gate 9). Daughters of Congrats have produced eight winners from nine starters in Japan, including Group 2 winner Hartley (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}).

During her racing career, Teddy’s Promise (Salt Lake) registered her biggest victory in the 2011 GI La Brea S. and her Deep Impact foal of 2019 (lot 36) was the session’s most expensive filly on a bid of ¥240 million ($2,242,991). Teddy’s Promise is the dam of two winners from as many to race in Japan, most prominently My Rhapsody (Jpn) (Heart’s Cry {Jpn}), victorious in Group 3 company last year and ninth, but not beaten far, behind Contrail (Jpn) (Deep Impact) in this year’s G1 Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby). Teddy’s Promise’s current 2-year-old, a filly by 2015 Derby hero Duramente (Jpn), fetched ¥52 million last year.

In other results of note, lot 108, a Deep Impact son of GI American Oaks winner Cambina (Ire) (Hawk Wing) and kin to two group-placed runners, hammered at ¥200 million ($1,869,159); lot 92, a Deep Impact half-brother to Classic winner and Three Chimneys stallion Palace Malice (Curlin) made ¥190 million ($1,775,701); lot 23, a colt by Duramente out of GI Kentucky Oaks winner Proud Spell (Proud Citizen), sold early in the session for ¥160 million ($1,495,328); a Deep Impact daughter of GI Beverly D. S. winner Euro Charline (Ire) (Myboycharlie {Ire}) realized ¥145 million ($1,335,141) as lot 171; and lot 106, a Screen Hero (Jpn) half-brother to recent Listed Japan Dirt Derby winner Danon Pharaoh (Jpn) (American Pharoah) fetched ¥96 million ($897,197).
