Mighty Heart Falls Short In Triple Crown Bid; Trainer Carroll Triumphant With Maiden Belichick In Breeders’ Stakes

Belichick, second to Mighty Heart in the Queen's Plate, turned the tables on his stablemate, and trounced his nearest rival by four lengths in the 129th running of the $400,000 Breeders' Stakes, Saturday at Woodbine in Toronto, Ontario.

Coached by conditioner Josie Carroll, who also trains Mighty Heart, Belichick proved to be much the best in the 1 1/2-mile turf marathon, and final jewel in the OLG Canadian Triple Crown.

Mighty Heart, the one-eyed wonder colt, was looking to become the first horse since Wando in 2003 to sweep all three races in the series. The bay Ontario-bred, bred and owned by Larry Cordes, was impressive in winning both the Queen's Plate at Woodbine on Sept. 12 and the Prince of Wales Stakes at Fort Erie on Sept. 29.

On this day, however, it was Belichick's time to shine over the E.P. Taylor Turf Course, courtesy of a maiden-breaking masterpiece.

It was Mighty Heart, sent off as the even-money choice, who was immediately directed to the front by Daisuke Fukumoto. The son of Dramedy was quickly engaged by longshot Kunal into the first turn, as the duo took their rivals through an opening quarter-mile in a brisk :23.69. Told It All and Clayton (the bay son of Bodemeister, who was third in the Plate and second in the Prince of Wales) were well back in third and fourth, respectively. Belichick, sent off as the 3-1 third choice, sat sixth under confident handling from Luis Contreras.

Mighty Heart and Kunal continued their front-end battle after a half-mile posted in :47.45, still well ahead of their closest pursuers. Belichick, still waiting for his cue from Contreras, began to pick up momentum moving into fifth spot.

After three-quarters in 1:13.02, the field began to converge on the leaders, with Contreras steering Belichick to the outside to take aim at the tiring front-runners. Just before the turn for home, Belichick took command as Mighty Heart began to fade to the inside.

At the stretch call (timed in 2:07.38), Belichick was in full flight, dashing away from his rivals with ease, as late-running 54-1 outsider Meyer rallied to take the second spot. English Conqueror got up for third, a half-length in front of 41-1 Deviant for the show award. Mighty Heart finished seventh. Olliemyboy, 11th in the Queen's Plate, was scratched.

Final time for the race was 2:32.51 over “good” ground.

“They kind of broke early in the race so I just tried to see them and relax my horse as much as I can,” said Contreras of the early front end speed. “He was very uncomfortable; this horse has a different style to run so I just let him be happy wherever he wants to be.

“Turning for home, I was just in hand all the way to the quarter pole and I asked him to run from the stretch home and he did. I was just watching, just feeling my horse at the same time. And he was doing great the whole way. He came into this race very ready, good thing for Josie and all the crew.”

Fukumoto didn't expect to be on the engine with Mighty Heart.

“Today he broke good and I didn't plan on going to the front. He was sharp like in the Queen's Plate, I tried to take hold and he relaxed a little bit in the backstretch, but with the mile and a half you need the stamina. I think he just got tired. He tried hard today, I tried to take hold too … but that's racing. He gave me many experiences and I'm so proud of him. I want everyone to keep following him when he runs again next time.”

Said Carroll, “I told him [Fukumoto], 'Let's see how this falls out. If you make the lead, watch your fractions … it's a long, long race.' The horse broke well, he found himself up there, unfortunately another horse dogged him the whole way and he couldn't get the horse to come off the bridle and relax.”

The Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame inductee was impressed, but not surprised by the winner's strong showing.

“I've said from the very start that Belichick is a very, very special horse that's just coming into his own and I think he showed that today. He's a powerful horse. The Queen's Plate was a breakout race for him and we couldn't come back that quickly in the Prince of Wales. A horse needs a little time to regroup from something like that, a young, inexperienced horse. And regroup he did.”

Owned by NK Racing and LNJ Foxwood, Belichick is now 1-2-1 from four starts in his career.

The son of Lemon Drop Kid, unraced at two, finished third in his career bow on July 4, following it up with a runner-up performance in his second start on August 1.

After his second-place finish in the Plate, Belichick's connections drew up a perfect game plan for the Breeders'.

“He's a different horse,” noted Carroll. “He was so distracted the first race. I came over here with high expectations of him, I knew in the paddock I was in trouble … he was looking at a white pony and he was all googly-eyed at them, all over the place. And then off of that race he seasoned a little, and then more so the next race, and then today when I was back at the barn he was sleeping all day, stretched right out in the stall … just crashed. The nerves are all gone, he's just turned into a real professional.”

The last Canadian Triple Crown winner was the Michael Keogh-trained Wando, who put his name into the record books in 2003 as the 12th horse to win all three races.

Belichick paid $8.70, $5 and $3.40. He combined with Meyer ($30.70, $15.60) for a 9-1 exactor that returned $238.20. English Conqueror ($5.30) completed the 9-1-5 triactor, worth $1,544.60 and Deviant rounded out the 9-1-5-3 winning superfecta combination that paid $15,395.90 for $1.

Live Thoroughbred racing resumes at Woodbine Racetrack on Sunday, with first race post time set for 1:10 p.m. The feature race is the $250,000 Wonder Where Stakes, final jewel in the Canadian Triple Tiara series.

Lemon Drop Kid’s Belichick Upsets Mighty Heart in Breeders S.

Heading into Saturday’s final jewel in Canada’s 2020 Triple Crown, trainer Josie Carroll appeared poised to collect the 129th renewal of the Breeders’ S. And while most thought that Queen’s Plate S. and Prince of Wales S. hero Mighty Heart (Dramedy) was the most likely to accomplish the feat as even-money choice, it was his stablemate Belichick (Lemon Drop Kid) who landed the Canadian Classic in fine style.

Given a 3-1 chance here, Belichick raced two wide in mid-pack as his favored barnmate-prompted by longshot Kunal (Temple City)–blazed through swift early fractions of :23,69, :47.45 and 1:13.02. The field began to converge on the leaders, with Contreras steering Belichick to the outside to take aim at the tiring front-runners. Just before the turn for home, Belichick took command as Mighty Heart began to fade to the inside. Full of run from there, the $300,000 KEESEP buy struck the front in early stretch and charged clear to win by an easy four-length margin over 54-1 longshot Meyer (Singing Saint) and English Conqueror (English Channel) back in third. Mighty Heart tired through the lane, finishing seventh.

“They kind of broke early in the race so I just tried to see them and relax my horse as much as I can,” said winning rider Luis Contreras of the early speed up front. “He was very uncomfortable; this horse has a different style to run, so I just let him be happy wherever he wants to be.”

“Turning for home, I was just in hand all the way to the quarter pole and I asked him to run from the stretch home and he did. I was just watching, just feeling my horse at the same time. And he was doing great the whole way. He came into this race very ready, good thing for Josie and all the crew.”

Third on debut sprinting on the local lawn July 4, the NK Racing and LNJ Foxwoods representative was second next out in a nine-panel maiden special weight on the synthetic here Aug. 1. Most recently, he finished second–beaten 7 1/2 lengths-to Mighty Heart in the Queen’s Plate Sept. 12.

“I’ve said from the very start that Belichick is a very, very special horse that’s just coming into his own and I think he showed that today,” said Carroll. “He’s a powerful horse. The Queen’s Plate was a breakout race for him and we couldn’t come back that quickly in the Prince of Wales. A horse needs a little time to regroup from something like that, a young, inexperienced horse. And regroup he did.”

As for the beaten favorite who was looking to become the first Canadian Triple Crown winner since Wando in 2003, Carroll said, “I told him [jockey Daisuke Fukumoto], ‘Let’s see how this falls out. If you make the lead, watch your fractions..it’s a long, long race.’ The horse broke well, he found himself up there, unfortunately, another horse dogged him the whole way and he couldn’t get the horse to come off the bridle and relax.”

Pedigree Notes:
Belichick, a $300,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase, is a full-brother to the stakes-winning filly Season Ticket and a half to Broken Game (Broken Vow), a listed winner and group placed filly in Peru. Weekend Lineup Presented By Del Mar Ship & Win: Can Mighty Heart Claim The Crown?

Woodbine is back in the spotlight this weekend as the Ontario track hosts the Breeders' Stakes, the final leg of the Canadian Triple Crown. TVG will air the Breeders' Stakes as Mighty Heart attempts to become the first horse to sweep the series since Wando in 2003.

Racing from Belmont Park is televised on “America's Day at the Races” on FS2. “America's Day at the Races” will also broadcast races from the opening day of Churchill Downs' fall meet on October 25.
.
Saturday, Oct. 24

5:43 p.m.—$400,000 Breeders' Stakes at Woodbine on TVG

Mighty Heart will continue his quest to join an elite group of horses to sweep all three legs of the Canadian Triple Crown this Saturday in the Breeders' Stakes. Trained by three-time Queen's Plate winner Josie Carroll, Mighty Heart headlines the final jewel of the tri-surface series for Canadian-bred 3-year-olds, which concludes on Woodbine's world-renowned E.P. Taylor Turf Course with the longest leg at the distance of 1 ½-miles. The son of Dramedy, bred and owned by Lawrence Cordes, is the even-money morning line favorite in the field of 12 having already scored wins in the $1 million Queen's Plate at 1 ¼ miles over Woodbine's Tapeta track on September 12 and the $400,000 Prince of Wales at 1 3/16 miles over Fort Erie's dirt course on September 29.

7:37 p.m.—$100,000 Grade 3 Senator Ken Maddy Stakes at Santa Anita Park on TVG

Unbeaten in four starts by a combined 25 ½ lengths, trainer Mark Glatt's Magic At Midnight will try stakes competition for the first time as she squares off with Wesley Ward's multiple stakes winning Jo Jo Air in the Senator Ken Maddy Stakes which has attracted a field of seven at 5 ½ furlongs over the Santa Anita turf. Claimed for $30,000 out of a first-out 13 length romp on July 14 at Los Alamitos, Magic At Midnight has been nothing short of tremendous in three subsequent starts for Glatt, including a 2 ¾ length score in her only try on grass two starts back in a turf allowance at Del Mar August 14.

Sunday, Oct. 25

4:55 p.m.—$100,000 Grade 3 Athenia Stakes at Belmont Park on FS2

Reeves Thoroughbred Racing and Tango Uniform Racing's Feel Glorious will look to bounce back from an off-the-board finish in last month's Grade 3 Noble Damsel with another graded stakes appearance, serving as one of two entrants for trainer Christophe Clement in the Athenia going 1 1/16 miles over the inner turf course. Feel Glorious is looking to recapture the form she showed earlier in her 4-year-old campaign, including a half-length victory in the Perfect Sting going the Athenia's distance on August 14 at Saratoga Race Course. Cut back to one mile in the Grade 3 Nobel Damsel on September 26 at Belmont, Feel Glorious ran seventh after going five-wide in the upper stretch and failing to rally, marking just the first time in her last seven starts the English-bred daughter of Bated Breath did not hit the board.

7:30 p.m.—$200,000 Grade 2 Goldikova Stakes at Santa Anita Park on TVG

In top form and bidding for her third consecutive win, trainer Phil D'Amato's Raymundos Secret, along with Simon Callaghan's classy Maxim Rate, head a field of seven in Sunday's Goldikova Stakes. A gutty gate to wire winner of the Grade 2 John C. Mabee Stakes, Raymundos Secret should relish the cutback in distance, as she's won four out of her five starts at a flat mile. Second in the Grade 1 Rodeo Drive on September 26, Maxim Rate has three wins from six tries at one mile on grass and will be ridden by Umberto Rispoli, who guided her to a pair of wins this past summer at Del Mar.

One Horse May Stand Between Mighty Heart and the Canadian Triple Crown and It’s His Stablemate

The tale of a one-eyed horse who has come from nowhere to sweep the first two legs of the Canadian Triple Crown has been the feel-good story of the year at Woodbine, but the next chapter could end with an uncomfortable twist. Mighty Heart (Dramedy) is the even-money favorite in Saturday’s Breeders S., a role he earned after decisive victories in the Queen’s Plate and the Prince of Wales S. But there’s a rapidly improving, dangerous horse in the field named Belichick (Lemon Drop Kid) who should relish the mile-and-a-half on the turf and is the second choice at 7-2 in the morning line. Like Mighty Heart, Belichick is trained by Josie Carroll. That means that the Canadian Hall of Fame trainer will be in the unenviable position of perhaps costing herself and Mighty Heart a Triple Crown sweep.

“I think I would have really mixed emotions if that were to happen,” she said. “Putting it in human terms, it would be like you coaching two kids and one has a chance to do something extraordinary but it’s the other one that you are bringing along who steps up. You are proud of both of them but there’s going to be a bittersweet factor, of course.”

Owned by NK Racing and LNJ Foxwoods, Belichick is still a maiden after three starts, but showed dramatic improvement when second behind Mighty Heart in the Queen’s Plate when he was beaten 7 1/2 lengths. Carroll kept him out of the Prince of Wales and should have a fresh horse who has continued to get better as the races have gotten longer.

“Belichick is a strong, athletic horse.,” she said. “He is a horse I expected from his first start would be a dominant horse on this circuit. It ended up taking him longer to come around than I expected. Certainly, he’s just coming into his own.”

Neither of Carroll’s horses were considered serious Queen’s Plate contenders as late as early July. After finishing out of the money in his first two starts, both of them at the Fair Grounds, Mighty Heart broke his maiden July 11 at Woodbine. After finishing third in an allowance race, he was dismissed at 13-1 in the Queen’s Plate and was overshadowed by still another Carroll horse, Curlin’s Voyage (Curlin). A filly, she finished fifth as the 5-2 favorite as Mighty Heart ran away from his competition.

“He really enjoys running and once he figured out what it was all about he just steadily improved,” Carroll said. “I don’t think it was one thing that suddenly turned him around. He just got better.”

Seventeen days later and now the 4-5 favorite, Mighty Heart, who is a homebred owned by Lawrence Cordes, had no problem winning the second leg of the Canadian series, the mile-and-three-sixteenths dirt race at Fort Erie. That put him within one win of a Triple Crown sweep. The Canadian Triple Crown has been won seven times and not since 2003 when won by Wando (Langfuhr).

Mighty Heart became an easy horse to root for. He lost his left eye in a paddock accident when he was just 2-weeks-old, but has overcome that setback for Carroll and Cordes, a small owner/breeder. His sire, Dramedy, stood in two different states, Kentucky and Oklahoma, during four years of study duty in North America before being shipped off to Saudi Arabia. Mighty Heart is one of only 17 foals from his first crop.

Mighty Hearty grew to be so popular that Woodbine set up a special media day for the horse on the backstretch Monday and Carroll, Cordes and jockey Daisuke Fukumoto were on hand to answer questions.

“It’s wonderful when our sport gets a horse that captures the public’s imagination,” Carroll said. “It lets people see the human side of racing, that it’s more than just a sport. It is these wonderful animals and the wonderful people that are involved with them. You’ve got this horse that came into Queen’s Plate as the underdog and won it decisively. He overcame the one eye. He’s got as small owner who only owns a couple of horses but is intense about racing. I think the whole story has caught on with everybody. And the name. The name is exactly who he is.”

There is some question as to how Mighty Heart will handle the switch to the turf. He has raced on the surface once, in a Mar. 21 maiden at the Fair Grounds where he finished 11th. He bore out badly in that race, which Carroll said, was due to the fact he has just the one eye.

“He got some kickback in his face,” she said. “He has only the one eye, so I think when it hit his blind side it really startled him and he ran to the outside. Since then has had a lot of schooling in behind horses and after that race we put a one-eyed blinkers over that eye. There’s a cup we put on that covers the sensitive area and that helped turn him around a lot. I don’t think it was the surface that time. I think it was the kickback.”

While Carroll isn’t too worried about the turf, she admitted that Mighty Heart’s schedule is a concern. Just as was the case with the American Triple Crown, the Canadian races had to be rescheduled because of the pandemic and there are just six weeks between the first leg and the last.

“We are asking a horse who is very young in his career to do a great deal,” she said. “Certainly, it’s a concern. He’s acting great going into the race and his blood work is great. Everything says he is on go but you really don’t know how much those two races took out of him.”

If they did take something out of Mighty Heart that could set things up for Belichick, who has had six weeks off. Carroll will be seeking her second win in the Breeders. She won the race in 2014 with Ami’s Holiday (Harlan’s Holiday). She could get her second Saturday, but the question is, with which horse?
