McGivern Optimistic as Speedy Fillies Catch Attention at Arqana

DEAUVILLE, France–Deliverance came a day early for Katie McGivern at the Arqana Breeze-Up Sale as lot 64, a Sioux Nation filly and lot 66, a filly by Siyouni (Fr), finished in the top five fastest times overall in the session.

It was McGivern's fillies, the only two that she brought to one of the premier breeze-up sales in Europe, who emerged from the cavalry of 130 juveniles as being up there with the fastest on show.

McGivern stuck her neck out in going to €68,000 for the Siyouni filly out of Stars So Bright (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) at the Goffs Sportsman's Yearling Sale and she looks like being handsomely rewarded when she offers the speedster under the banner of Derryconnor Stud on Friday.

“I'm delighted,” the in-demand consignor said in between showing the fillies post-breeze. “They put in a solid breeze and had shown some pretty good homework before coming here. They stepped up on what I asked them to do here.

“The Siyouni just naturally knew how to go. There was no teaching in her. The Sioux Nation was very straightforward as well in fairness. I actually came over here on my own with them.

“Everyone was asking me why I didn't bring staff with me but I kept telling them how straightforward they were and they showed that today. I have a girl helping me today and for the sale tomorrow but usually the good ones are horizontal.”

So, too, is McGivern, who knows a thing or two about producing good horses. Daban (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}), winner of the 2017 G3 Nell Gwyn S., is one of many high-class graduates from McGivern's nursery and, given the Siyouni and Sioux Nation fillies have passed the vet and pulled out of the breeze in top shape, the popular consignor was feeling optimistic on the eve of the sale.

She said, “They stepped up to the mark. You can do all of the homework you like but some will let you down at the sales. Not these fillies. I'm very proud of them.

“I bought the Sioux Nation in Book 2 at Tattersalls in October. I gave 36,000gns for her out of Sherbourne Lodge and I bought the Siyouni in the Sportsman's Sale off Castlebridge for €68,000, which would be a huge amount for me. We gave a big price for her as €40,000 is normally my maximum but we were lucky in that the mare hadn't produced a winner when we bought her but the first foal out of her has won since and that definitely helps.”

McGivern added, “It's very busy here and hopefully they sell well. I know they vet 100% which is a relief because there's no point in having a fast one who isn't going to pass the vet. I actually had Kaboo (More Than Ready) here last year, and he didn't pass the vet despite being the fifth fastest, so he only made €40,000 in the end. Thankfully, these two have passed so that hurdle is crossed. I'll definitely sleep easy tonight but it will be nerve-wracking tomorrow.”

There was a real international feel to the afternoon session, with Joseph O'Brien, Jean-Claude Rouget, George Boughey, Thady Gosden and Francis Graffard some of the many recognisable faces in baking heat.

Few have concentrated so heavily and reaped such rewards with breezers in recent years quite like Michael O'Callaghan has and, while he hopes to be active at the sale which kicks off at 2 p.m. local time, the Irish trainer admitted it will be tough to compete against the international competition.

“It's going to be very hard,” O'Callaghan admitted in between viewings on Thursday evening. “This, the best breeze-up sale there is, and the consignors keep their best horses for France. It will be hard to buy the best of them but we will give it a good go.”

He added, “Blue De Vega (Ger) (Lope de Vega {Ire}), Now Or Later (Ire) (Bushranger {Ire}), Letters Of Note (Ire) (Azamour {Ire}), they all came from the breeze-up sales and we'll be doing our best to find the next one tomorrow [Friday].”

Australia’s Tranquil Lady Outclasses Blue Wind Opposition

Six days after the G1 Prix Ganay victory of her half-brother State of Rest (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}), Teme Valley Racing's Tranquil Lady (Ire) (Australia {GB}–Repose) kept the family honour well and truly intact with an authoritative success in Naas' G3 Irish Stallion Farms EBF Blue Wind S. Sent off the 3-1 joint-second favourite in what appeared to be a tight contest, the chestnut who had been fourth in Navan's Listed Salsabil S. on her 3-year-old bow Apr. 23 travelled sweetly in third early under Dylan Browne McMonagle. Cruising to Ballydoyle's 11-4 favourite Lily Pond (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) two out, she was sent on into a clear advantage soon after and relished the run to the line to hand that rival a four-length thrashing, with another 5 1/2 lengths back to the winner's stablemate Tosen Lydia (Ire) (The Gurkha {Ire}) in third. Joseph O'Brien admitted he hadn't been considering the G1 Cazoo Oaks for the impressive winner, but could be in for a change of heart. “She popped her head up today as if she should be going there,” he said. “It wasn't the plan, but it's definitely a conversation we'll have with Richard and Jim [Cockburn] now. We kind of had the Curragh in our minds, but we have to certainly talk about it now.”

Tranquil Lady, who had been second to the smart Limiti di Greccio (Ire) (Elzaam {Aus}) in The Curragh's Listed Staffordstown Stud S. in October, was paying a compliment to the Salsabil one-two Concert Hall (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) and Magical Lagoon (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) here but her trainer believes she was not seen at her best on that occasion. “I don't know why she didn't really fire in Navan, it wasn't a bad run and it was probably a good race but we were hoping for more and it's nice to see her doing it today,” he revealed. “This was plan b to come here, to be honest, but she came out of Navan well and we thought it was a suitable race. I was a bit worried about the [easy] ground and [Teme Valley racing manager] Richard [Ryan] convinced me to run her. I don't think she wants it too soft, but she handled it well and Dylan gave her a lovely ride.” Of the yard's well-regarded Tosen Lydia, who met with defeat for the first time and was left behind by the front two, he added, “She probably won't go to the Oaks. We think she's a good filly, but I'm not sure if she might be best at a mile.”

Tranquil Lady is the third foal out of the unraced dam, with the second State of Rest already a G1 Cox Plate and GI Saratoga Derby Invitational hero prior to his weekend exploits in ParisLongchamp. The second dam Monaassabaat (Zilzal) took the Listed Virginia S. before producing the listed scorers Prince Alzain (Street Sense) and Echo River (Irish River {Fr}), with the latter also second inn the G3 May Hill S. She is also the second dam of the G2 Royal Lodge S. and G2 Vintage S. runner-up Artigiano (Distorted Humor) and listed-placed Dubai Legacy (Discreet Cat).

The third dam is the 16-times-winning dual GI Vanity H. heroine and champion It's In the Air (Mr. Prospector), whose descendants include the triple group 1-winning Champion S. hero Storming Home (GB) (Machiavellian), the GI American Oaks heroine Music Note (A. P. Indy) and her G1 Dubai World Cup-winning son Mystic Guide (Ghostzapper), plus the G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches winner Musical Chimes (In Excess {Ire}). Repose's 2-year-old filly Double Scoop (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire}) was a €180,000 purchase by Anthony Dutrow at the Goffs Orby Yearling Sale.

State of Rest Pounces For Ganay Triumph

Joseph O'Brien trainee State of Rest (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) enjoyed a fruitful sophomore campaign last year and the 4-year-old's globetrotting exploits yielded wins in August's GI Saratoga Derby Invitational and October's G1 Cox Plate at Moonee Valley. He was sent postward as a 63-10 chance for Sunday's G1 Prix Ganay at ParisLongchamp and produced a battling display to secure a third elite-level triumph in the 10 1/2-furlong highlight. Third in the G2 Champagne S. and fifth in the G1 Futurity as a juvenile, he also hit the board in last year's Listed Celebration S. at The Curragh. The eventual winner was well away from the outside gate and tracked the pace in a handy fourth for the most part. Looming large on the bridle with 500 metres remaining, he came under pressure to gain a narrow advantage approaching the final furlong and was driven out in the closing stages to deny G2 Prix Eugene Adam and G3 Prix Exbury victor Pretty Tiger (Ire) (Sea The Moon {Ger}) by 3/4-of-a-length in game fashion.

“He's a very good horse, I'm pleased with his performance and delighted for all the team at home,” commented trainer Joseph O'Brien. “He came here in good nick and we were taking on some really good horses, but I wasn't sure how our form tied up with them. I thought he did well to win because the race didn't set up to suit him. He was caught a bit wide from that [outside] draw, but Shane [Crosse] gave him a great ride. Our main objective for this season was to win a Group 1 in Europe and we'll now look at the [G1] Tattersalls Gold Cup back in Ireland. It's very exciting to have him in the yard and there's a pretty clear path for these 10-furlong horses through the summer. The [G1] Prince of Wales's S. [at Royal Ascot] is an obvious option and, now that he's owned by an Australian syndicate, he could very well return to race in Australia at the end of the season.”

“He lost second by so little because fast ground is not ideal, but I think this confirms he is a genuine Group 1 horse,” said Haras de la Gousserie's Kamel Chehboub after Sealiway was nailed on the line for second. “Good-to-soft would have been better so I think we will pass on the [G1] Prince of Wales's S. [at Royal Ascot] and wait for the [G1] Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud. We'll then give him a break until the autumn.”

Reflecting on the performance of defeated 9-10 favourite Skalleti (Fr) (Kendargent {Fr}), trainer Jerome Reynier said, “The ground was probably too firm for him. He won the Ispahan on similar ground, but the field was stronger today and Maxime [Guyon] said he was never travelling well. We had to be sporting, he is seven and if you don't try the challenge now when will you? I hope he comes out of the race well and that I don't regret my decision to run him.”

State of Rest is the second of four foals bred from the unraced Repose (Quiet American), whose own dam Monaassabaat (Zilzal) annexed the Listed Tattersalls Virginia S. and produced Listed Milcars Star S. victrix and G3 May Hill S. runner-up Echo River (Irish River {Fr}) as well as Listed Churchill S. victor Prince Alzain (Street Sense). His third dam is dual GI Vanity H.-winning champion It's In The Air (Mr. Prospector), herself the dam of G2 Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte victrix Bitooh (GB) (Seattle Slew) and Listed Honeymoon H. victor Air Dancer (Northern Dancer). Descendants of It's In The Air also include MG1SW sire Storming Home (GB) (Machiavellian), GI American Oaks heroine Music Note (A.P. Indy), Music Note's G1 Dubai World Cup-winning son Mystic Guide (Ghostzapper), G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches winner Musical Chimes (In Excess {Ire}) and Saturday's Listed Kilvington Fillies' S. victrix Umm Kulthum (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}). State of Rest is kin to Listed Silver Flash S. runner-up Tranquil Lady (Ire) (Australia {GB}) and the hitherto unraced 2-year-old filly Double Scoop (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire}).

MyRacehorse Launches In The UK And Ireland With Juvenile Trio

MyRacehorse, a U.S.-based racehorse micro-share ownership operator, is expanding to the UK and Ireland with three 2-year-olds, including a 450,000gns Dubawi (Ire) colt purchased out of the Tattersalls October Book 1 Yearling Sale. Out of J Wonder (Footstepsinthesand {GB}), he is trained by Andrew Balding. John and Thady Gosden have a $300,000 Keeneland September filly by Mendelssohn for the GI Kentucky Derby/GI Breeders' Cup Classic-winning organisation. The trio is rounded out by a Zoffany (Ire) filly in the yard of Joseph O'Brien. She was purchased for €170,000 at Goffs Orby.

MyRacehorse has over 100 horses in training in America and over 50,000 registered users. They added another location, Australia, in June of 2021, and currently have 36 horses there and over 12,000 owners Down Under. Their aim is to make racehorse ownership available to any casual fan by way of fractional shares. In most cases, shares for their UK/Ireland venture will be priced under £200. For more information, please visit MyRacehorse's website.

Jules Pittam, UK Managing Partner of MyRacehorse, said, “We want to give people the opportunity to experience elite ownership at an affordable price and encourage new owners into the sport. Our goal is to increase engagement with the industry overall by providing owners unrivaled behind-the-scenes access and hopefully the opportunity to enjoy some of the best moments in sport as they tread the path to glory.

“The tide is turning on racehorse ownership, and the sport is becoming more reliant on shared ownership and syndicates–something we at MyRacehorse are passionate about. We want to offer this unique opportunity to racing fans in both the UK and Ireland and give them the chance to join our 70,000 strong global community.

“Unlike other ownership models, we offer contractual racing and breeding equity; so when our horses win big, so do our owners.”
