California

Explainer: Upon receipt of notification from Industrial Laboratories, the official testing laboratory for the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission and confirmed at Texas A & M Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory, sample number E454454 taken from Warrior's Charge, who finished second in the eleventh race at Churchill Downs on June 26, 2021 contained phenylbutazone at a level of 2.51 ug/ml in blood (Class C)/ After waiving his right to a formal hearing before the Board of Stewards Brad H. Cox is hereby suspended 10 days, May 23 2022 through June 1, 2022 (inclusive) and fined $500. Warrior's Charge us disqualified and all purse money forfeited.

Early Voting Puts in Final Preakness Prep

GII Wood Memorial S. runner-up Early Voting (Gun Runner) put in his final breeze ahead of the upcoming GI Preakness S. Friday morning at Belmont Park, going five panels in 1:00.63 in company with SW Miles D (Curlin).

Under jockey Jose Ortiz, The Chad Brown pupil went three-eighths in :36.40 before completing the five furlong move in 1:00.63 and galloping out six furlongs in 1:13 flat over the fast main track.

“He hit the times just as I wanted and he galloped out super,” Brown said of Early Voting. “If he comes out of the breeze in good shape, then he's on to Pimlico. Tentatively, I'm thinking of shipping the horse on Tuesday.”

Early Voting skipped the GI Kentucky Derby in favor of this spot. Brown made a similar move with the Klaravich co-owned Cloud Computing (Maclean's Music) after he finished third in the Wood.

“There's a lot of similarities,” Brown said. “They both are lightly-raced, improving horses that are coming out of the Wood and could use a little more time and experience rather than throw them into a 20-horse field in the Derby.”

Miles D is slated for the GIII Pimlico Special S. Friday.

“Miles D worked inside, he's actually a little better outside, but it set it up that way today,” said Brown. “He got a lot of the work this morning. He missed a little time because he got sick before the Oaklawn Handicap, so we missed that race. He should appreciate the distance of the Pimlico Special.”

Jack Christopher Eyes Bigger and Better Things

After Jack Christopher (Munnings) romped in the GI Champagne S. at Belmont Park last year, his connections were optimistic that the horse had the talent to get them to the winner's circle at Churchill Downs on the first Saturday in May. That happened, just not the way anyone had planned. Not ready for the GI Kentucky Derby after seven-month layoff, Jack Christopher ran instead in the GII Pat Day Mile S., which he won by 3 3/4 lengths. While the victory was somewhat of a consolation prize, it set the colt up for what still could be a very productive year.

“I was very impressed,” trainer Chad Brown said. “He was coming off a long layoff and going into a graded stakes on Derby Day. There were a couple of really nice horses in there. So I thought it was a big test for him, a big challenge. He passed it well. I was so pleased and so relieved that he's back and ready to move forward.”

Jack Christopher was expected to go off as the favorite in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile, but was withdrawn after Brown discovered that the horse had a shin problem. He subsequently had a screw inserted into his left shin to repair a stress fracture. Had Brown decided to rush things he might have had Jack Christopher ready in time to make the Derby, but he decided to go a more cautious route.

“We decided to give him enough time and not rush him back,” the trainer said. “It was the right approach.”

Jack Christopher had his first published workout on the year on March 27 at Payson Park and made steady progress from there. In order to make the Derby, he would have had to have run in a prep race in order to pick up points. Once Brown realized that wasn't going to happen, he settled in on the Pat Day Mile. He liked the distance and the timing and how it might set the horse up for the rest of the year.

“At the mile, it worked out perfectly,” Brown said. “He was able to find his stride down the backside. He broke a little tardy and had to be used just a touch to get into position. When Jose (Ortiz) sat back on the horse against the bit the horse was a comfortable mover, just tugging along gently the entire race. He was running within himself.”

The Pat Day simply confirmed what Brown already knew, that this is a very good race horse.

“He's very special. He is an incredible talent,” he said.

Yet, Brown couldn't escape the obvious. He has what very well might be the most talented 3-year-old in training and won a graded stakes race on Kentucky Derby day. Only it wasn't the Kentucky Derby.

“It is bittersweet,” he said. “You only have one crack at the Derby. But that's part of what makes the Derby so difficult to win. There is a small window. Could he have won the Derby? We'll never know. Now it's in the books and the horse didn't make it. There are a certain number of people out there who believe this is the most talented colt in this crop. With previous crops through history, sometimes the most talented horse in the crop does not make the Derby. I'm not saying that's the case here. There are still long careers to be had out of this crop with many different horses. He's one of them. Ultimately, we'll find out down the road who the most talented horse is.”

The problem now for Brown and owners Jim Bakke and Gerry Isbister is that there is no obvious next step when it comes to the next race. The GI Preakness S. comes up too soon and is not under consideration. The GI Belmont S. is out because it would be asking too much to go from a mile to a mile-and-a-half. Brown isn't in love with the idea of cutting back in distance, but he also wants to keep Jack Christopher on a steady schedule. With that in mind, he said the seven-furlong GI Woody Stephens S., run June 11, Belmont day, will be next. The larger goal is the GI Haskell S. on July 23 at Monmouth.

“When we decided to take some extra time with the horse and take him out of consideration for the Derby, the race I spoke to Mr. Bakke about was the Haskell,” Brown said. “I told him he wasn't going to make the Derby but the Haskell is really the target. I do think the horse will get a mile and an eighth.”

That's the sort of a race where he could meet Kentucky Derby winner Rich Strike (Keen Ice) along with a number of other top horses from this division. It will be a test, but one he seems capable of passing. Is Jack Christopher an “incredible talent?” We're about to find out.

Florida’s Best Face Off in FL Derby

HALLANDALE BEACH, FL–The three winners of Florida's four previous GI Kentucky Derby prep races meet Saturday as they make their final starts ahead of the First Saturday in May in Gulfstream's GI Curlin Florida Derby.

Classic Causeway (Giant's Causeway) ruled the Tampa Bay Downs preps, scoring decisive victories in both the GIII Sam F. Davis S. Feb. 12 and the GII Tampa Bay Derby Mar. 12. He hit the board in all three of his juvenile races, starting with a dominant debut at Saratoga Sept. 4. Finishing third after setting the pace in the GI Claiborne Breeders' Futurity S. at Keeneland Oct. 9, he was a good second in the GII Kentucky Jockey Club S. at Churchill Downs Nov. 27.

Irad Ortiz, who rode Classic Causeway to victory in both Tampa races, will remain aboard for Saturday's test. Conditioner Brian Lynch said he will leave the race in that leading rider's hands.

“Irad and Classic Causeway have some kind of chemistry there,” Lynch said. “They've got it going on. I'm not going to get involved too much. He's ridden him well the last two times. He is a good gate horse, so I am sure he is going to break running and I will let Irad take it from there.”

Classic Causeway's good gate speed usually leaves him on or near the front end. With a few other speedy runners signed on, it could set things up for Simplification (Not This Time), whose last two stellar efforts came from back off the pace. A front-running winner of the local Mucho Macho Man S. on New Year's Day, the bay was tossing his head when the gates sprang in the Feb. 5 GIII Holy Bull S. and got away last of them all. He rallied in the lane, but refused to switch leads, just holding off favorite Mo Donegal (Uncle Mo) to be second to White Abarrio (Race Day). Away better next out under new pilot in Jose Ortiz, Simplification settled in mid-pack and made a wide late run to take the GII Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth S. by 3 1/2 lengths, earning a 96 Beyer Speed Figure.

“I'm very happy with the way he is coming into the race,” Ortiz said. “He has two great works [5f in :59 4/5 Mar. 26 and 5f in 1:01 4/5 Mar. 19]. There seems like there will be some pace in the race. The main thing for us will be to have a good start and get good position.”

White Abarrio was a well-beaten third behind Classic Causeway in the Kentucky Jockey Club after winning his first two starts at Gulfstream last year. He opened his 2022 account with a dominant score in the Holy Bull, stalking and pouncing his way to a 4 1/2-length success. Connections decided to bypass the Fountain of Youth to give the colt more time after a minor illness and he spiked another fever last week, but connections report he is back to normal. Six-time Florida Derby winner Todd Pletcher steps an impressive maiden winner up to the big leagues here in Charge It (Tapit). Missing by just a neck in his Jan. 8 unveiling here, the gray zipped home to an 8 1/2-length graduation next out going a mile at this oval Feb. 12, good for a 93 Beyer Speed Figure.

“This is a big step up off of two starts,” Pletcher said. “He's been very impressive, not only in his training, but in his maiden win and I thought even in his debut, even though he didn't win. It was a strong race. We think he has the talent for it. Hopefully he has enough experience and seasoning because we are giving up a lot of that to some nice horses. We are optimistic at the same time.”
