Brown Double-Fisted for Miss Grillo

Trainer Chad Brown will have two chances–led by even-money morning-line favorite McKulick (GB) (Frankel {GB})–for his ninth GII Miss Grillo S. victory Saturday.

McKulick, named for the late Mary McKulick, a longtime office manager and bookkeeper for Brown, kicked home nicely from fifth to graduate over three next-out winners, including runner-up stablemate Consumer Spending (More Than Ready), at the Spa on debut Aug. 8. She is drawn widest of all in post six for the Miss Grillo.

Brown will also saddle Kinchen (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}), who finished an unlucky second behind Hail To (Kitten's Joy)-a full-sister to GISW Sadler's Joy–in her grassy unveiling at Saratoga Aug. 29.

“I felt if she could have got out to the clear, she probably would have won,” Brown said of Kinchen, who is named in honor of the late Ralph Kinchen, father of popular America's Day at the Races analyst Jonathon Kinchen.

“The break dictated to settle–which most of my horses will do– and she kicked on nicely. She just found herself with some traffic inside and she probably would have been a little braver if we could have got her clear, but that happens in maiden races. We'll turn the page and hopefully she gets a better trip in this.”

McKulick and Kinchen worked five-eighths in company around the dogs over the Belmont inner turf in 1:02.09 (9/16) Sept. 26.

McNerney Wins NHC Charity Challenge, Brunker Finishes Second

Jimmy McNerney, track announcer at Ellis Park Racing & Gaming and Turfway Park, both located in Kentucky, won the 7th annual $5,000 National Horseplayers Championship (NHC) Charity Challenge presented by Four Roses Bourbon with a final mythical bankroll of $68.60. Mike Brunker, assistant city editor and horse racing columnist at the Las Vegas Review-Journal, finished second with $64.20.

McNerney spent about six hours preparing for the Charity Challenge, including while his wife drove him from Cincinnati to Ellis this morning.

“The horse in the last (Del Mar Race 9, Friar's Road, $10.20) was the one I loved the most,” he said. “I just thought the pace scenario set up perfect for him and he definitely was the one.”

A field of 58 personalities competed in the Charity Challenge. As the winner, McNerney will have $2,500 donated in his name to the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund (PDJF) and he chose the Dragonfly Foundation of Cincinnati, supporters of patients and families impacted by pediatric cancer, to receive $2,500.

McNerney chose the Dragonfly Foundation in honor of a family friend who has used their services

“When he explained what all they did for him, it really hit me and I thought, man, if I ever get a chance I'd like to donate to them. And I went through a couple of heart surgeries when I was a child. There's a lot of struggle with families in town who don't have a support group or places to go.”

McNerney “grew up at the barn,” as he tells it. His grandparents were both trainers. His dad was a jockey. His mom and her siblings also were steeped in the sport and two of them were riders, too.

“We were always at Ellis Park and Turfway so it's kind of cool that I get to actually call the two tracks I grew up at,” McNerney said.

McNerney has worked in racing office roles at Beulah Park and River Downs before he became an announcer.

“I became friends with Luke Kruytbosch and would hang out with him in the booth here at Ellis,” he said..”After he passed I never thought I'd get a chance because he was the one helping me. But I used to do impersonations of announcers just hanging out at the bar at Hoosier Park. One day [longtime announcer] Steve Cross had car trouble and the publicity lady, Tammy Knox, came to me and said, 'You're up.' I told her I'd only called races off TV and she said, 'Well, you're all we got.'”

McNerney served as a backup for several years before landing a gig at Fair Grounds for their Summer Quarter Horse Meet. He continues to work as an agent and currently has the book of DeShawn Parker, who this year has received two of the most prestigious career honors for riders, the George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award presented by Santa Anita Park and the Mike Venezia Award from the New York Racing Association.

The top five in the Charity Challenge was rounded out by longtime industry video production specialist G.D. Hieronymus ($59.60), Forbes SportsMoney business writer Matt Rybaltowski ($56), and New York Racing Association/FOX Sports racing analyst and co-founder of In the Money Media Jonathon Kinchen ($45.30).

In addition to the charitable prize, Breeders' Cup is offering a $500 credit to the winner's HorsePlayers.com account The second-place finisher will get a $250 credit with third earning a $100 credit.

Players selected one horse for a mythical $2 Win and Place bets on the same eight races used as mandatory events on Day #2 at the NHC.

Breeders’ Cup Launches HorsePlayers Happy Hour Tour

Breeders' Cup announces the launch of the HorsePlayers Happy Hour Tour (“HorsePlayers Tour”) hosted by In the Money Media (ITMM), which will begin Thursday, April 8, at 3:00 p.m. ET. The HorsePlayers Tour will coincide with the popular HorsePlayers Happy Hour livestream featuring ITMM's Matt Bernier, Peter Fornatale and Jonathon Kinchen. Each week fans at home can play along with the ITMM team for a chance to earn tour points and qualify for the season-ending playoffs. One $10,000 Breeders' Cup Betting Challenge (BCBC) seat will be awarded to the player that finishes first on the regular season leaderboard and another will be awarded to the winner of the playoffs.

The HorsePlayers Tour kicks off on April 8 with a $20 feeder contest on HorsePlayers.com, where sign-ups are currently live. In addition to the tour benefits, the designated contests will also award one seat per 65 entries into that weekend's $179 BCBC qualifier on HorsePlayers.com. For more information and complete rules, visit BreedersCup.com/Happy-Hour-Tour.

Breeders' Cup will donate all proceeds from the HorsePlayers Tour online contests to the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance and the Thoroughbred Retirement Fund. In 2020, Breeders' Cup raised over $6,500 for its charity partners through the HorsePlayers Happy Hour program.

“HorsePlayers are the heartbeat of our sport and this exciting new format is a great way to keep them engaged all season long and reward them for playing in our online contests,” said Justin McDonald, Senior Vice President of Marketing for Breeders' Cup. “Being able to follow along and interact with the In the Money Media team during our weekly livestreams is a unique and fun component of the tour that new and avid fans will really enjoy.”

Each week players participating in the designated HorsePlayers Tour feeder contest will have a chance to earn tour points and qualify for the year-end playoffs. Points will be awarded to the top ten finishers each week, starting with 100 points to the winner and descending in increments of 10 points to each respective place below that, with 10 points awarded to the 10th-place finisher. The top eight scores for each player during the regular season will be used to calculate the final leaderboard scores. The person with the highest overall score will be declared the regular season winner and earn a $10,000 BCBC seat.

Once the regular season concludes, there will be an 80-player playoff that will consist of the top two finishers from each of the weekly HorsePlayers Tour contests, as well as the remaining top finishers on the regular season leaderboard who have not already qualified. Playoffs will start the week of Sept. 20 with 80 total players and be narrowed down to 40 players the week of Sept. 27, 20 players the week of Oct. 4, and 10 players the week of Oct. 18 for the Final Table. This schedule is subject to change. The Final Table participants will compete during a special livestream format that will be broadcast as the final show of the season, with the winner earning a $10,000 BCBC seat. Players can have up to three entries at the start of the playoffs, but only one entry can advance to the Final Table.

For schedule updates, more information and complete rules, visit BreedersCup.com/Happy-Hour-Tour.
