Jolie Olimpica Set To Defend Title In Jan. 9 Las Cienegas

Richard Mandella has a busy weekend coming up at Santa Anita in Arcadia, Calif., with Jolie Olimpica and Superstition ticketed for next Saturday's Grade 3 Las Cienegas Stakes for older fillies and mares going six furlongs on turf, and Amuse set for next Sunday's $75,000 Kalookan Queen Stakes for fillies and mares at 6 ½ furlongs on the main track.

Jolie Olimpica, a 5-year-old Brazilian-bred mare, will be making her first start since last July 11 when she finished second in the Grade 1 Jenny Wiley at Keeneland. Mike Smith retains the mount. She won the Las Cienegas in her U.S. debut on Jan. 11, 2020, having been unbeaten and untested in three previous races in her native country.

Superstition, a 4-year-old daughter of 2004 Horse of the Year Ghostzapper, makes her stakes debut after two straight victories at five furlongs on turf at Del Mar. Flavien Prat rides.

Amuse, a 6-year-old Medaglia d'Oro mare, last raced on Sept. 25, 2020, finishing third by a length in the G3 Chillingworth Stakes under Drayden Van Dyke, who will be back aboard in the Kalookan Queen.

“She just needed a break,” said the Hall of Fame trainer in explaining her absence of three-plus months.

Jolie Olimpica to Beat in Yellow Ribbon

Fox Hill Farms’ speedy Jolie Olimpica (Brz) (Drosselmeyer), a close runner-up to division leader Rushing Fall (More Than Ready) last out, will go postward as the horse to beat in Saturday’s eight-horse GII Yellow Ribbon S. at Del Mar.

Undefeated in three starts in her native land, capping her Brazilian career with a dominant win over males in the G1 Jockey Club Brasileiro at Gavea last June, the chestnut got off to an auspicious start Stateside when annexing the GIII Las Cienegas S. going 5 1/2 furlongs Jan. 11 at Santa Anita. Getting a clear lead in the GII Buena Vista S. when stretching out to a mile Feb. 22, however, she couldn’t quite stay and settled for second. Rebounding with a score in the GII Monrovia S. back sprinting May 25, she again attempted to stretch her speed in the GI Coolmore Jenny Wiley S. July 11 at Keeneland and again just gave it up late, finishing a narrow second in Rushing Fall’s course-record-setting performance. Drawing outside in a field without other clear speed, she figures to get a dream trip here.

The veteran Beau Recall (Ire) (Sir Prancealot {Ire}) also comes in off a runner-up finish to a division leader as she tries for a Yellow Ribbon repeat. Upset winner of last spring’s GII Longines Churchill Distaff Turf Mile S., she captured this event two starts later before closing her 5-year-old account with a second in the GI Rodeo Drive S. Ninth, while only beaten 2 1/4 lengths, in the GIII Old Forester Mint Julep S. in her seasonal debut May 30 in Louisville, she most recently closed from last to complete the exacta behind wire-to-wire victress Newspaperofrecord (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) in the GI Just A Game S. June 27 at Belmont.

Tommy Town Thoroughbreds’ Keeper Ofthe Stars (Midnight Lute) will attempt to rebound after quickly developing into a division player earlier this year. Last year’s GIII Autumn Miss S. heroine was the one who chased down Jolie Olimpica in the Buena Vista to score a 36-1 upset, then showed that effort was no fluke when taking the GI Gamely S. May 25 in Arcadia. Last time out, however, she finished a dull fifth in the June 20 GIII Wilshire S.

Rushing Fall Shatters Course Record in Jenny Wiley Repeat

Already a Grade I winner at ages two, three and four, ‘TDN Rising Star’ Rushing Fall (More Than Ready) made it four straight seasons at the highest level with a record-setting victory in the GI Coolmore Jenny Wiley S. at Keeneland Saturday, which she also won last season. Away in good order, the 4-5 chalk was hot on pacesetting Jolie Olimpica (Brz)’s (Drosselmeyer) tail in second with Juliet Foxtrot (GB) (Dansili {GB}) to her inside through upbeat fractions of :23.42 and :46.94. Ranging up to look Jolie Olimpica in the eye turning for home, Rushing Fall engaged in a brief battle with her foe, but shut the door on her by mid-stretch and drew clear to win by 3/4 of a length. Her final time of 1:39.02 shattered the previous course record for a mile of 1:40.30 set by Quiet Resolve (Affirmed) in 2000.

“It’s a dream come true,” said owner Bob Edwards of e Five Racing. “Everyone wishes for a horse like this. I hope I get another one in my racing career like her. This is just phenomenal. We’re all sitting around watching it at the house…I’m still shaking. The adrenaline spike is still there even when you’re watching from your couch. And not a terrible day for Chad [Brown]!”

Kicking off her 2019 season with a victory in this race, Rushing Fall followed suit with a win in Belmont’s GI Just a Game S. last June and was second to her champion stablemate Sistercharlie (Myboycharlie {Ire}) in Saratoga’s GI Diana S. Closing out last term with a fourth to another champion barnmate in Uni (GB) (More Than Ready) in this venue’s GI First Lady S. in October, the bay opened this term with a wire-to-wire victory in Belmont’s GIII Beaugay S. June 3.

Pedigree Notes:

Rushing Fall’s female family has dabbled in the spotlight for many years, long before her dam, Autumnal, produced the five-time Grade I winner and 2014 SW & three-time GSP Milam (Street Sense). Autumnal’s dam, Marie J, made headlines in 1997 when she sold for $1 million as a 2-year-old in training at that year’s Barretts March sale and then was named after the “Marie” half of prominent owners Aaron and Marie Jones, who bred Autumnal. The latter was sold as a 2004 Keeneland September yearling for $550,000. Rushing Fall is the brightest light in the most recent branches of the family, although Marie J’s half-sister did produce GISW Albert the Great (Go for Gin). Autumnal has had only two foals since Rushing Fall was born in 2015, including a full-brother to the Jenny Wiley winner born this year. Rushing Fall is one of 202 black-type winners–91 graded–for dual hemisphere super sire More Than Ready.

Rushing Fall Chasing Repeat Victory In Jenny Wiley

E Five Racing Thoroughbreds' Rushing Fall will chase history Saturday when she headlines a field of eight fillies and mares for the 32nd running of the $350,000 Coolmore Jenny Wiley (G1) going 1 1/16 miles on the turf at Keeneland.

The Coolmore Jenny Wiley will be the eighth race on Saturday's 10-race program with a 4:57 p.m. post time.

Trained by three-time race winner Chad Brown, Rushing Fall will be trying to join Intercontinental (GB) (2004-2005) as the only repeat winner of the race. With a victory Saturday, Rushing Fall would join Lady Eli and Beholder as the only horses since 1976 to win Grade 1 races at ages 2, 3, 4 and 5.

Regular rider Javier Castellano, who has been aboard for Rushing Fall's four previous stakes victories at Keeneland, has the call Saturday and will break from post position four. Only Wise Dan has won more Keeneland stakes (seven) than Rushing Fall, who shares the second spot with Take Charge Lady.

Invading from California are Fox Hill Farms' Jolie Olimpica (BRZ) and Ken Baca, Edward Hudson Jr. and Lynne Hudson's Toinette.

Trained by Richard Mandella, Jolie Olimpica has won five of six career starts with her most recent victory coming in the Monrovia (G2) at Santa Anita in May. Mike Smith the mount and will break from post six.

Toinette, who came off a six-month layoff to win the Wilshire (G3) in her 2020 debut, owns a victory over Rushing Fall with a neck triumph in the 2018 Edgewood (G3) at Churchill Downs. Trained by Neil Drysdale, Toinette will be ridden by Flavien Prat and break from post eight.
