Kingman’s Guru a New Rising Star On Debut At Newbury

Newbury’s bet365 EBF Novice S. at Saturday looked the type of race to throw up something special beforehand and the feast of fancy pedigrees duly delivered as Lady Bamford’s newcomer Guru (GB) (Kingman {GB}) denied Juddmonte’s Maximal (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) in a photo. Settled off the pace as Adam Kirby found a lead throughout the early stages of this seven-furlong contest, the 8-1 shot had to surrender first run to the eventual runner-up inside the final two furlongs but picked up in style to reel in that rival in the final stride. At the line, the homebred son of the high-class Dream Peace (Ire) (Dansili {GB}) had prevailed by a nose from the son of Joyeuse (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}), with three lengths separating them and Legend of Dubai (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}). That first foal out of the G1 Prix Jean Romanet and G1 Prix de l’Opera heroine Speedy Boarding (GB) (Shamardal) was making it a one-two-three for the blueblooded newcomers in a race that could be talked about for some time to come.

John Gosden’s son Thady was on hand to discuss the winner and said, “He did everything right in the race and is a pretty laid-back horse at home. He was taking everything in today on this first day at school and he may be one to treat gently and take in a novice rather than going straight into a group race. Sir Michael Stoute’s horse [Maximal] looked a lovely horse in the paddock, so we were pleased to be there with him at the end.”

Guru looks as if he could be the best progeny so far out of Dream Peace, who was bought for 2.7million gns at the 2013 Tattersalls December Mares Sale. Initially with Robert Collet, the Kilfrush Stud-bred mare captured the G2 Prix de la Nonette and was third in the GI E.P. Taylor S. and runner-up in the GI Diana S. before joining Chad Brown and placing in the GI Flower Bowl Invitational and the E.P. Taylor and Diana again. The second dam is Truly a Dream (Ire) (Darshaan {GB}) who captured the E.P. Taylor when it was staged as a grade II and also the G3 Prix de Royaumont before producing the G1 Poule d’Essai des Poulains runner-up Catcher In the Rye (Ire) (Danehill). Also connected to the top-class trio of L’Ancresse (Ire) (Darshaan {GB}), Moonstone (GB) (Dalakhani {Ire}) and Cerulean Sky (Ire) (Darshaan {GB}), Dream Peace’s yearling colt is by Frankel (GB).

Enable’s Sister Wins At Second Asking

The John Gosden-trained 3-year-old filly Portrush (GB) (Frankel {GB}) won at second asking at Yarmouth on Wednesday. She is the sixth winner from six runners out of Concentric (GB) (Sadler’s Wells).

PORTRUSH (GB) (f, 3, Frankel {GB}–Concentric {GB} {SW & GSP-Fr, $117,776}, by Sadler’s Wells), who ran second behind subsequent G1 Epsom Oaks seventh Gold Wand (Ire) (Golden Horn {GB}) in her June 11 debut over much this trip at Newbury last time, raced in a midfield sixth sporting a second-time hood through the initial stages here. Improving into fifth off the home turn, the 11-10 favourite was shaken up to close approaching the final quarter mile and stayed on strongly under whipless cajoling in the closing stages to outpoint White Mountain (GB) (Raven’s Pass) by a neck. Star Catcher Will Resurface in Yorkshire Oaks

John Gosden has earmarked next month’s G1 Darley Yorkshire Oaks as the first target for MG1SW Star Catcher (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) ahead of a potentially busy autumn campaign. Last year’s G1 Irish Oaks heroine is being readied to make her comeback in the 12-furlong contest, which could potentially see her clash with stablemate, and dual G1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner, Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}). The Anthony Oppenheimer homebred established herself as one of the best middle-distance fillies in training after adding to her Curragh Classic success with further top-level triumphs in the G1 Prix Vermeille at ParisLongchamp and on Champions Day at Ascot in October.

Gosden said, “She was ready to run in Dubai and we had her all primed, but at the very last minute we decided not to put her on the plane and of course they then they basically shut down the United Arab Emirates. After that I let her down a bit and gave her a nice little holiday. I thought ‘don’t train her and back right away’ as there was no racing and we didn’t know when we would start again.

“After speaking to Mr. Oppenheimer, we decided to go August onwards with her and–potentially into November. I want to bring her back to the Yorkshire Oaks, then potentially look at the Vermeille again. She is in the Arc and there is Fillies & Mares S. back at Ascot and we would even think of the Breeders’ Cup.”

Having given Enable a racecourse gallop at Newmarket’s July Course ahead of her return in the Eclipse, Gosden has not ruled out doing something similar with Star Catcher, who also struck gold in last season’s G2 Ribblesdale S. at Royal Ascot.

He added, “I might give her a racecourse gallop before the Yorkshire Oaks, but she is pretty simple and gets herself ready. We might pop her down at the July Course before going to York, though.”
