Siskin’s Next Start Up in the Air

Classic hero Siskin (First Defence), who lost his unbeaten tag with a third in last week’s G1 Qatar Sussex S., has emerged from that effort well, but his connections are not sure where he will start next. Trained by Ger Lyons for Prince Khalid Abdullah’s Juddmonte operation, the homebred had scored an impressive victory in the G1 Tattersalls Irish 2000 Guineas in his sophomore bow at The Curragh on June 12. The bay was unbeaten in four runs as a juvenile, including the G1 Keeneland Phoenix S. and G2 GAIN Railway S.

“He’s come out of the race well,” said Abdullah’s racing manager Teddy Grimthorpe. “I’ve got to discuss with Prince Khalid what he would like to do. We’ll look at all the options, which are pretty straightforward really.”

Another Juddmonte colourbearer also received a positive update, as two-time G1 Prix de l’Arc heroine Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) continues to shine after take the July 25 G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO S. at Ascot, her third win in the race. Second in the 2019 Arc ,the John Gosden trainee filled the same position in the G1 Coral-Eclipse S. on July 5. She is pointing to either York’s Aug. 20 G1 Yorkshire Oaks or Aug. 19 G1 Juddmonte International S., followed by another try in the Arc in France in October.

Added Grimthorpe, “All is good with Enable. She hasn’t done a lot since Ascot, but she came out of the race well and everybody is happy with her.”

Sea the Stars’s Miss Yoda Takes the Diana

Capping a week to remember even by his exalted standards, Frankie Dettori dropped in on Dusseldorf to whip up the crowd as he steered the Westerberg colour-bearer Miss Yoda (Ger) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) to glory in the G1 Henkel-Preis der Diana. On the front from the outset and allowed her own terms, the June 5 Listed Lingfield Oaks Trial winner was only headed briefly in early straight as Silence Please (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}) loomed but when shaken up forged a 3/4-of-a-length success from Zamrud (Ger) (Samum {Ger}), who nosed out Virginia Joy (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}) for the runner’s-up spot. “She jumped good and I wanted to be in front–after that she was flowing with a lovely action,” commented Dettori who in the last eight days had won on the household names Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) and Stradivarius (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) and ridden a winner for The Queen on his home track at Newmarket. “When I turned for home she was thinking of going back to the stables, so she stopped a bit but I told her to concentrate and away she went.”

Losing her unbeaten tag on her third and final juvenile start when runner-up in the G3 Zetland S. over 10 furlongs at Newmarket in October, Miss Yoda had returned to garner the Oaks Trial despite not handling Lingfield’s undulations and all Epsom aspirations were dashed there and then. Instead tried in Royal Ascot’s G2 Ribblesdale S. June 16, she was sixth there and was too keen when fourth in the 13-furlong G3 Bahrain Trophy back at Newmarket July 9. Enjoying an easy lead despite not always looking at home on this tight circuit, she was hanging left and looking likely to be swamped as Silence Please launched her challenge inside the final 300 metres. Quickly regaining momentum, the 5-1 shot was soon re-asserting as that Irish raider hung away her chance and it was another group 1 for her powerful connections.

The dam Monami (Ger) (Sholokhov {Ire}), whose yearling colt by Kingman (GB) was bought for 340,000gns by Baroda Stud at the Tattersalls December Foal Sale, was the winner of the G2 Diana-Trial and the G3 Preis der Winterkonigin as well as finishing third in the G1 Premio di Vittorio di Capua. She is kin to the G1 Oaks d’Italia heroine Meridiana (Ger) (Lomitas {GB}), whose four stakes performers are headed by Chamois (Smart Strike) who was placed in the GII Dixie S. This is the family of the smart group 3-winning stayer Moonshiner (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}) and the G2 Diana-Trial winner Meergorl (Ger), also by Adlerflug. Monami also has an as-yet unraced 2-year-old colt by Amaron (GB) named Mahanadi {GB}) and a foal full-sister to Miss Yoda to come.

Easy Lillie Langtry Repeat For Enbihaar

With Manuela de Vega (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) ruled out of Saturday’s G2 Qatar Lillie Langtry S. at Goodwood, the way was paved for last year’s winner Enbihaar (Ire) (Redoute’s Choice {Aus}) to enjoy a saunter around the Downs and she duly delivered with the minimum of fuss against two rivals. Last seen finishing fourth in the 12-furlong G2 Princess of Wales’s S. on her seasonal bow at Newmarket July 9, Shadwell’s 1-2 favourite stayed close to the 3-year-old Snow (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) throughout the early stages and once sent past that rival passing the two-furlong pole drew away strongly to score by 3 1/2 lengths from Cabaletta (GB) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}).

One of last term’s most improved performers, Enbihaar proved a formidable runner when granted suitably lively conditions and a distance of ground and went from success in the G2 Lancashire Oaks to this win and another in Doncaster’s G2 Park Hill S. in September. Third when undone by testing ground in the G1 Prix de Royallieu at ParisLongchamp in October, the same underfoot conditions meant that she was below-par on her return at the July meeting but everything fell perfectly into place for this repeat of 12 months ago. Despite giving way weight-for-age to a younger duo with smart form, the imposing bay never looked likely to become the subject of an upset and is primed for a potentially profitable remainder of the campaign.

That could come over excess of this trip according to the operation’s Racing Manager Angus Gold. “It’s unlike Sheikh Hamdan to keep an older mare in training and I’m glad to see that rewarded with another group win,” he commented. “It’s good to see her show her old enthusiasm and that amazing stride of hers. I’ll talk to John and see what the options are, but Jim said she’ll stay two miles any day. She doesn’t want the ground too soft, but I would have thought the [G2 Qipco British Champions] Long Distance Cup [at Ascot Oct. 17] would be an option.”

Enbihaar is a half-sister to Godolphin’s G2 International Topkapi Trophy runner-up Silent Attack (GB) (Dream Ahead) and to the listed-placed King Bolete (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}). They are out of Chanterelle (Fr) (Trempolino), a full-sister to the G3 Prix du Calvados scorer Cox Orange who in turn produced the Listed Masaka S. winner and G1 1000 Guineas third Vista Bella (GB) (Diktat {GB}). Her dam is the G2 Prix Maurice de Gheest winner Spectacular Joke (Spectacular Bid), whose leading performer was the G1 Prix Marcel Boussac heroine Amonita (Anabaa). Chanterelle also has a yearling filly by Muhaarar (GB).

A Glorious Send-Off

Goodwood’s Qatar Festival has lived up to its “Glorious” tag all week and Saturday sees the culmination with the G2 Qatar Lillie Langtry S. the key race for the staying fillies and mares. Despite there being only four participants, they are all notable performers in the category and last year’s winner Enbihaar (Ire) (Redoute’s Choice {Aus}) will have to be at or near her best to bring up the repeat. Twelve months ago, the Shadwell representative gave a stone and a five-length beating to Manuela de Vega (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}), defying the anchor of a combination of weight-for-age and a penalty here prior to adding Doncaster’s G2 Park Hill S. to her tally. Perhaps undone by testing ground when third in the G1 Prix de Royallieu at ParisLongchamp and fourth in the 12-furlong G2 Princess of Wales’s S. on her seasonal bow at Newmarket July 9, she has ideal conditions again here.

Shadwell’s racing manager Angus Gold is looking for improvement from her comeback effort.

“I thought she stayed on well in the last part of the race at Newmarket,” he explained. “It was her first run of the year, the trip was a bit short and the ground was soft enough for her as well. Hopefully, the ground will be on the quick side on Saturday, which will certainly help her. She is showing incredible enthusiasm and has this extraordinary action. You can never take anything for granted, but I would hope she’ll put her best foot forward.”

Since her heavy defeat in this last year, Manuela de Vega has come back at four a different proposition but had soft ground to suit when taking Haydock’s G3 Pinnacle S. June 7 and G2 Lancashire Oaks July 5 over a mile and a half. She gets the three-pound penalty as a result this time, which makes it all the harder for her to deal with Enbihaar but trainer Ralph Beckett is willing to give it a go.

“She’s in very good shape and we’re hoping she can go one better than last year,” he said. “We think she’s pretty adaptable ground-wise–I don’t think it makes too much difference to her. It won’t be easy giving the penalty away, but it’s feasible.”

Aside from that duo, the 3-year-olds Snow (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Cabaletta (GB) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) are worthy of respect with the former coming in on the back of a fifth in the G1 Irish Oaks at The Curragh a fortnight ago and Cheveley Park Stud’s TDN Rising Star Cabaletta also backing up quickly having won Newbury’s Listed Aphrodite S. over a mile and a half on the same day.

Deauville ramps up the action as the August Festival gets underway in earnest, with the G3 Prix Six Perfections Sky Sports Racing and G3 Prix de Psyche Sky Sports Racing enjoying a share of the focus. In the former for 2-year-old fillies, Sean Mulryan, Linda Shanahan and Susan Magnier’s unbeaten See The Rose (Ire) (Kendargent {Fr}) returns to the scene of her smooth six-furlong conditions success July 12. She has to deal with Godolphin’s Wedding Dance (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), a member of Charlie Appleby’s academy which always does well here and she impressed with a 3 1/4-length success in a Newmarket maiden over this seven-furlong trip July 11.

“We were very pleased with Wedding Dance last time out, when she won nicely and she came out of the race well. This looks a nice opportunity for her to step up in grade,” her trainer said.

In the Psyche over a mile and a quarter, Shadwell’s Raabihah (Sea the Stars {Ire}) will be a warm order, having finished a short neck and two head margins behind the subsequent G1 Nassau S. winner Fancy Blue (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) when fourth in the G1 Prix de Diane over 10 1/2 furlongs at Chantilly July 5. Again, Godolphin are at the fore with the Andre Fabre-trained Alkandora (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}), who took ParisLongchamp’s Listed Prix Melisande also over 10 1/2 furlongs last time July 2.

“Alkandora is in good form and has done really well since her last race,” Godolphin’s Lisa-Jane Graffard said. “She will appreciate a step up in trip in time, but Andre is very happy with her condition and she deserves a try at this level.”

Also in the mix is Tweenhills Fillies and Meridian International’s impressive June 7 Listed Pretty Polly Fillies’ S. winner Run Wild (Ger) (Amaron {GB}), who will be more at home back at that trip having finished last in the G1 Coronation S. at Royal Ascot June 20.
