Another Kingman Rising Star As Monsoon Moon Delivers

Saturday’s Close Brothers Motor Finance EBF Stallions Fillies’ Novice S. looked there for the taking for Khalid Abdullah’s Monsoon Moon (GB) (Kingman {GB}) and the half-sister to last year’s G1 St Leger winner Logician (GB) (Frankel {GB}) was in uncompromising mood as she duly earned TDN Rising Star status over Newmarket’s mile. Always travelling strongly under Ryan Moore tracking the early pace, the 2-5 favourite who was third on debut behind TDN Rising Star Love Is You (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) at Ascot a fortnight previously was still full of running when sent to the front two out. In total command from there, the grey was chased to the line by the fellow John Gosden-trained debutante Haija (Fr) (Shalaa {Ire}) but was 3 1/4-lengths too strong there as she in turned pulled seven lengths clear of Naflah (Fr) (Territories {Ire}). The latter had been four lengths adrift of Monsoon Moon at Ascot, putting a clear marker on the race in which Godolphin’s newcomer Sayyida (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), the half-sister to Masar (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}), blew the start and finished last.

Gosden is understandably in no rush with the winner. “Monsoon Moon is a nice filly. She’s a big filly and she still needs to mature physically and mentally,” he said. “I don’t think we want to be launching into anything next and maybe she’ll have one more run this autumn. I don’t think she’ll go for the Fillies’ Mile and Ryan [Moore] didn’t feel it was the right thing to do for her right now.”

Alongside the aforementioned Logician, Hwt. 3yo-Eur at 14f+, Hwt. 3yo-Eng at 14f+, G1SW-Eng, $656,003, the other notable performer out of the listed-placed dam Scuffle (GB) (Daylami {Ire}) is the GIII Glens Falls S., GIII La Prevoyante H. and GIII The Very One S. winner and GI E. P. Taylor S. runner-up Suffused (GB) (Champs Elysees {GB}), MGSW-US, GISP-Can & SP-Eng, $697,248. She has also thrown the listed-winning Collide (GB) by Logician’s sire Frankel, the listed-placed Battlement (GB) (Dansili {GB}) and the triple winner Sleep Walk (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) who is responsible for Friday’s Newbury scorer Lucid Dreamer (GB) (Dansili {GB}), another Juddmonte juvenile with Classic potential.

The second dam Tantina (Distant View) captured the seven-furlong Listed Sceptre S. giving three pounds and a five-length beating to the high-class Chic (GB) (Machiavellian), so it was no great surprise that she proved a high-class producer for this operation. Her G1 Dubai Duty Free-winning son Cityscape (GB) was followed by the G2 Temple S. winner and G1 July Cup runner-up Bated Breath (GB) who have both enjoyed success as sires. She is also the second dam of the G1 King’s Stand S. runner-up Equilateral (GB) (Equiano {Fr}), while the third dam Didina (GB) (Nashwan) is the GII Dahlia H. winner. Her descendants include the G2 Gimcrack S. scorer Ajaya (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and the G3 Rose of Lancaster S. and G3 Winter Hill S. winner Extra Elusive (GB) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}), while the fourth dam Didicoy (Danzig) is a half-sister to Juddmonte’s European champion 2-year-old colt of 1997 Xaar (GB). Scuffle’s yearling colt is by Time Test (GB), while her 2020 colt is a full-brother to Logician.

Mishriff on Track for Champion

French Derby winner Mishriff (Ire) (Make Believe {GB}) remains on course for the Oct. 17 G1 Qipco Champion S. at Ascot. The 3-year-old’s connections opted not to supplement the G1 Prix du Jockey Club winner for the G1 Qatar Pix de l’Arc de Triomphe in favor of Ascot’s 10-furlong feature. In his latest start, Mishriff won the Aug. 15 G2 Prix Guillaume D’Ornano at Deauville.

“He’s bouncing, he’s going well and he’s waiting for his date at Ascot,” said Ted Voute, racing manager to owner Prince Faisal. [Trainer] John [Gosden] and the Prince made a decision and that’s where we’re going. We’ve just got to find out what we’re racing against.”

Voute added, “At the moment he’s showing a nice turn of foot which they are not always blessed with. Let’s hope he can keep doing that when it’s needed.”

Voute also offered an update on Prince Faisal 2-year-old Third Kingdom (GB) (Make Believe {GB}). The colt has finished third in two career starts, including his latest when finishing behind subsequent Listed Solario S. winner Etonian (Ire) (Olympic Glory {Ire}) at Sandown on July 23 .

“He was down to go to Chelmsford the other day and just had a bit of heat in a joint and they elected not to go,” explained Voute. “It has since been looked at and is nothing serious. He should be out soon.”

He added, “The form of that second race of his has come out quite nicely, so it was a shame he couldn’t go to Chelmsford as it looked like his for the taking, but we’re waiting for John [Gosden] to give him an entry and see how good he is.”

Dubawi’s Indigo Girl Takes the May Hill

Earning TDN Rising Star status on debut when winning over a mile at Yarmouth Aug. 30, George Strawbridge’s Indigo Girl (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) made an impressively rapid jump forward to capture Thursday’s G2 bet365 May Hill S. at Doncaster. Held up in last early by Frankie Dettori after an awkward start, the 10-3 second favourite was delivered with an eye-catching move stand’s side to swamp the long-time leader Dubai Fountain (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) with 1 1/2 furlongs remaining. Despite running green in front, the full-sister to the same connections’ group 1 winner Journey (GB) carved out a comfortable 3/4-of-a-length success from that rival, with the 6-5 favourite Zabeel Queen (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) a length further behind in third. “I rode Journey and she’s the same type–not over-big, but she’s got loads of gears,” Dettori said. “She travelled smoothly and quickened well. She ran a bit green and ducked left and right, but it’s only her second start so you can excuse her for that. She’s from a talented family and everything is in the right place. She seems easier to handle than her siblings. She’s got a good future and fingers crossed she can go all the way.”

John Gosden was enjoying a fifth renewal of this Classic pointer and said, “She did it very smoothly at Yarmouth and she’s been in great form since. The race didn’t knock her back a bit–it was rather like a piece of work. If we’d gone for another novice race, she would have had to lump a lot of weight and I don’t like doing that with two-year-olds. You can end up giving seven pounds to a group horse and you don’t know it. The May Hill is a beautiful race over the straight mile. The track is in beautiful nick and I thought we’d bring her here and see if we could nick a bit of black-type. She relaxed beautifully, which is key, and smoothly came through. I admit when she hit the front she ran around, but that’s the trainer’s fault because when I work them at home, I don’t like them bursting clear and breaking another one’s heart.”

Of targets, he added, “She’s obviously got a lot of talent. As long as she continues to enjoy her racing, she can move upward. There are two options this year–the [G1] Prix Marcel Boussac and the [G1] Fillies’ Mile. We could look at either of those or wait until next year, we’ll just have to see at this stage. Her mother won a Prix Royal-Oak and her full-sister won the Fillies & Mares Stakes on Champions Day at Ascot over a mile and a half. Funnily enough, I see this one as more of a mile to a mile-and-a-quarter filly. She travels strong and has a great turn of foot.”

As mentioned by her trainer, Journey captured the 2016 G1 QIPCO British Champions Fillies & Mares S. when she beat Speedy Boarding (GB) (Shamardal) by four lengths. Also runner-up in that race the previous year and successful in the G3 Pinnacle S. and second in the 2017 G1 Prix Vermeille, she is out of Montare (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}) who took the G1 Prix Royal Oak, G2 Prix de Royallieu and G2 Prix du Conseil de Paris. Her dual listed-winning dam Contare (GB) (Shirley Heights (GB) is also the second dam of Worth Waiting (GB) (Bated Breath {GB}), winner of the G2 Dahlia S. and G3 Prix Minerve. Montare’s other black-type performer is Travelling Man (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}), who was placed in three pattern races including when third in the G2 Grand Prix de Deauville. Her 3-year-old filly Mostly (GB) (Makfi {GB}) has won at Kempton this term, while her yearling filly is also by Dubawi.

Logician Downs Lone Rival In Doncaster Return

Last term’s unbeaten G1 St Leger hero Logician (GB) (Frankel {GB}), under wraps following a bout of peritonitis, maintained his perfect record in Thursday’s 10-furlong Sky Sports Racing Sky 415 Conditions S. back at the scene of that Classic triumph in his first start since.

LOGICIAN (GB) (c, 4, Frankel {GB}–Scuffle {GB} {SP-Eng}, by Daylami {Ire}) was under wraps after a storied case of peritonitis and went postward as the prohibitively priced 1-12 favourite facing just one rival, last year’s G2 Zabeel Mile victress Mythical Magic (Ire) (Iffraaj {GB}), in this eagerly awaited return. He stepped into an immediate lead, racing under a firm hold through the early stages, but was headed briefly soon after straightening for home. Nudged back in front approaching the quarter-mile marker, the hitherto undefeated grey turned the contest into an exercise canter thereafter and powered clear following the same stands’ side route as last year before gearing down for an easy seven-length score. “It was a nice, proper stretch and he’s finished very well and comfortable under hands and heels,” said winning trainer John Gosden. “This horse had two months in intensive care and I can have nothing but praise for the veterinarians at the Newmarket Equine Clinic for saving his life, twice, so that he can be here today. It’s been a long road and we’re very pleased to see him back. There’ll be no immediate plans, he’s well entered in the autumn, but I’d like to see how he is in the next 10 days before even thinking about another race. Just to get him back here is extraordinary in itself. We couldn’t be more pleased at this stage, but I don’t want to commit to anything now. We’re on the cusp of the autumn if we want to run again this year, but the horse will tell us.
