Pink Lloyd Goes Out Victorious, Wins Kennedy Road In Final Start

Already a Canadian icon, Pink Lloyd showed why in his final start, taking the Grade 2 Kennedy Road in a driving finish at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, Ontario. Midpack early, the 9-year-old gelding surged to the lead in the race's final sixteenth to cap off his illustrious career with his 26th stakes victory.

In a field of eight, Pink Lloyd and jockey Rafael Hernandez were fifth early in the G2 stakes, with Clayton and Richiesinthehouse 1-2 through a first quarter in :22.75 and a half-mile in :44.72. Around the far turn, Clayton had a length and a half lead, as Hernandez and Pink Lloyd had to go three-wide to find racing room as they entered the stretch.

Down the Woodbine straight, Pink Lloyd was driving down the center of the track, catching Richiesinthehouse and then passing Clayton in the race's waning yards. The legend was first under the wire, his last hurrah a victorious one.

The final time for the six furlongs was 1:08.84.

Pink Lloyd paid $9.40, $5.80, and $3.20. Richiesinthehouse paid $6.80 and $4.80. Clayton paid $4.60

Bred in Ontario by John Carey, Pink Lloyd is by Old Forester out of the Great Gladiator mare Gladiator Queen. He is owned by Entourage Stables and trained by Robert Tiller. Consigned by John Carey, the gelding was purchased by Frank Di Giulio, Jr., agent, for $28,446. With his win in the G2 Kennedy Road, a race he has won twice before, Pink Lloyd has three wins in five starts in 2021, for a lifetime record of 29 wins in 37 starts.

Stalwart Pink Lloyd Gets Another Stakes Win In Ontario Jockey Club

Out of a mare named Gladiator Queen, perhaps Pink Lloyd should be known as the Gladiator King. The 9-year-old gelding, a fixture on the Woodbine Tapeta, outlasted a persistent Souper Hot in the stretch to take the Ontario Jockey Club Stakes by a neck at the Toronto, Ontario track.

From post two, Pink Lloyd took up position on the rail, a half-length off of Souper Hot inside the first furlong of the six-furlong stakes. Around the race's lone turn, Pink Lloyd pulled even with Souper Hot, poised to take over as frontrunner entering the stretch.

At the top of the straightaway, Rafael Hernandez gave Pink Lloyd the cue and eked out a short lead, but Souper Hot persisted, never allowing the favorite to get more than a half-length in the lead before fighting back. At the wire, Pink Lloyd had a neck on Souper Hot, with Told It All third.

The final time for the six furlongs was 1:09.52.

Pink Lloyd paid $3.10 and $2.10. Souper Hot paid $4.20. There was no show wagering.

Bred in Ontario by John Carey, Pink Lloyd is by Old Forester. Consigned by his breeder, the 9-year-old gelding was sold to Frank De Juilio, Jr., agent, for $28,446 at the 2013 Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society Canadian-Bred Yearling Sale. He is owned by Entourage Stable and trained by Robert Tiller. With his win in the Ontario Jockey Club, Pink Lloyd has two wins in four starts in 2021, for a lifetime record of 28 wins in 37 starts.

Fourth Win In Vigil Pushes Canadian Icon Pink Lloyd Over $2-Million Mark

Canadian racing icon Pink Lloyd took the biggest slice of the pie and boosted his cash stash past the $2-million mark in career earnings with another winning effort in Grade 3 Vigil Stakes on Saturday, Sept. 5 at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, Ontario.

Trained by Canadian Hall of Famer Robert Tiller, Pink Lloyd nearly matched his own track record on the Tapeta, sprinting six furlongs in 1:08.06. He came within one hundredth of a second of his mark while carrying 128 pounds.

Track announcer Robert Geller called it one of the best starts of his career as the popular chestnut gelding broke well from post seven with a head in front early. He settled into stalking position behind a quartet of early leavers before making his winning move on the final turn for Rafael Hernandez.

Pink Lloyd rallied home a clear winner with Olympic Runner, who finished a neck back in their last Grade 3 Bold Venture match-up, closing from the backfield for the runner-up honors once again.

City Boy, among the dueling front-runners through early fractions of :21.97 and :43.92, finished 1-1/2 lengths behind in third and just a half-length in front of Eskiminzin, Malibu Secret, Blind Ambition and Roaring Forties. Silent Jimmie and Not So Quiet completed the order of finish.

“He's so dear to my heart. We believe in him so much,” said Tiller, though admitting he was the most nervous he's been in a long time today. “He's going to get two months off now and he deserves it. We'll be back in the fall.”

Bred in Ontario by John Carey and owned by Entourage Stable, the gelded son of Old Forester is now four-for-four during his eight-year-old campaign and has won 26 of his 31 starts lifetime.

He previously reeled off 11 consecutive victories from 2017 into 2018, and is currently riding a 10-race win streak following a perfect season in 2019.

The newly minted double millionaire boasts a record four Vigil Stakes victories, six Sovereign Awards, and a total of 23 stakes wins among his accomplishments. Taking the $90,000 winner's share of the purse, he now has $2,066,330 in career earnings.

“I don't think you're going to find another horse like him again. He's a Canadian racing icon,” said Tiller. “This is a true, true champion. And I've said it many times, I just love him to death and he just keeps amazing me.”

Send postward as the 4-5 favourite, Pink Lloyd paid $3.80 to win.

Live Thoroughbred racing continues this long weekend at Woodbine, with post time set for 1 p.m. on both Sunday and Labour Day Monday.

‘It’s A Fairy Tale’: Canadian Star Pink Lloyd Flies The Banner For Carey’s Breeding Program

It is every Thoroughbred breeder's dream to find that perfect match of mare and stallion, a union that will not only produce a good racehorse, but boost business at the annual yearling sales.

John Carey has been perfecting the Ontario breeding, sales, and stallion business for some 40 years and his T.C. Westmeath Stud in Shelburne is firmly established as one of the most successful in the country.

He has bred stakes winners, sold stakes winners, and brought some of the best stallions in Ontario racing history to the province.

All impressive accomplishments indeed.

But above all that, Carey will forever be known as the breeder and consignor of one of the greatest sprinters in Canadian racing lore, the remarkable Pink Lloyd.

Purchased for $30,000 at the 2013 Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society's Canadian Premier Yearling sale at Woodbine racetrack, he recently won his 22nd stakes race when he bulled his way through rivals to take the Grade 3 Bold Venture Stakes Aug. 15 at Woodbine.

In fact, for four years since he made his career debut in August 2016, the tall and leggy “Lloyd” has rolled through stakes victories for the ownership group Entourage Stable and trainer Robert Tiller, piling up purses that are just $23,000 (CAD) shy of $2 million.

He is second only to Grade 1 winner Heart to Heart (American-based earner of $2.038 million) as the richest CTHS sales graduate in the long history of the sale and he's gaining quickly on that fellow.

“He is something, isn't he?” Carey said after watching “Pinkie” overcome a bit of a crowded journey to win the Bold Venture. “It's a fairy tale. You can never know when you breed them that one could be this good.”

Pink Lloyd, a son of Carey's amazing stallion Old Forester (Forestry) from the mare Gladiator Queen, a daughter of one of Carey's first stallions, Great Gladiator, is three-for-three in 2020 as an 8-year-old in what is likely his last season of racing.

Following his Bold Venture victory, Tiller said, “He's eight years old; these are 4-year-olds and 5-year-olds and he just keeps doing it and doing it. I just cannot believe a horse could stay this good in every season of the year and keep winning. He's a blessing.”

Pink Lloyd's exploits, including his eight-for-eight campaign in 2017 that netted him Canadian Horse of the Year, champion sprinter and champion older male honors, have also provided Carey, wife Doris and twin sons Tyler and Trevor with the ability to continue doing what they love: breeding and selling racehorses.

Carey, an eighth generation horseman from Ireland, has bred dozens of stakes winners in addition to Pink Lloyd and in his latest stakes-caliber runner, Forester's Fortune, is another super advertisement for Old Forester.

Forester's Fortune, produced from the mare Nursery Song by Beau Genius, did not reach his $12,000 reserve at the 2018 CTHS sale and was later acquired by the late Laurie Silvera. As a 2-year-old in 2019, Forester' Fortune was third in the Victoria Stakes and this year, racing for Silvera's widow Claudia and Archie Lee, Forester's Fortune was second in the Greenwood Stakes at Woodbine. His earnings have gone past $100,000.

Carey's 2020 Canadian Premier Yearling Sale consignment of almost two dozen yearlings includes some well-bred youngsters by Old Forester. Carey's young stallion-on-the-rise, Souper Speedy, is also well represented in the sale.

Will another Pink Lloyd come out of this year's sale? That would be difficult to envision, but what the powerful and popular gelding has done for Carey, and Ontario racing, is shown the world that great racehorses can be found in Ontario.
