Kingman’s Megallan Strikes For Sovereign Success at Salisbury

Hampered in the straight when 12th contesting Chantilly's June 6 G1 Prix du Jockey Club last time, Anthony Oppenheimer's homebred 3-year-old colt Megallan (GB) (Kingman {GB}) gained some measure of recompense with a career-high win dropping down to a mile for Thursday's G3 D & N Construction Sovereign S. at Salisbury. The April-foaled bay had earlier secured a stakes breakthrough when successful in Newcastle's Apr. 2 Listed Burradon S. and followed up with a May 13 G2 Dante S. second at York in his penultimate start. He tracked the tempo under cover in a handy fourth after an alert getaway here. Improving to go third at halfway, the 7-4 favourite was angled into the clear for his challenge approaching the quarter-mile marker and was driven out once gaining a narrow advantage with 1 1/2 furlongs remaining to assert by a length and a nose from Sir Busker (Ire) (Sir Prancealot {Ire}) and Perotto (GB) (New Bay {GB}).

“He did well dropping to a mile, he enjoyed the [good] ground and we're delighted,” said Thady Gosden. “He ran a great race [behind subsequent G1 Irish Derby and G1 Grand Prix de Paris winner Hurricane Lane] in the Dante and looked like the winner at one stage, but was obviously beaten by a very good horse. We took him to the French Derby and, with all the changes after Brexit, it's a bit more of a journey over and it's much tougher on them. He didn't necessarily run his race there and it's great to see him back to himself today. He showed he has the speed for a mile, but he also stays a mile-and-a-quarter, so we'll see where we go from here.”

Megallan is the second of four foals and lone scorer produced by MGSP Listed Lord Weinstock Memorial S. victress Eastern Belle (GB) (Champs Elysees {GB}), herself a half-sister to MG1SW sire Golden Horn (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}) and last term's G3 Autumn S. third Dhahabi (Ire) (Frankel {GB}). He is a full-brother to the hitherto unraced 2-year-old colt Super Chief (GB) and half to a weanling colt by Sea the Stars (Ire). His second dam Fleche d'Or is an unraced half-sister to six stakes performers, headed by G1 Coronation S. heroine Rebecca Sharp (GB) (Machiavellian). Wonderful Tonight The Saturday Star

With Goodwood Saturday centred around the Stewards Cup for the sprinters, the G2 Qatar Lillie Langtry S. is the sole black-type contest on the closing card but it features one of Europe's best in Wonderful Tonight (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}).

Christopher Wright's G1 Prix de Royallieu, G1 QIPCO British Champions Fillies & Mares S. and G2 Hardwicke S. heroine was forced to miss last Saturday's G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S. due to the fast surface and despite the ground drying out all the time here, she is committed to run under her three-pound penalty. Trainer David Menuisier is taking nothing for granted.

“The opposition obviously is not the same as the King George, but they have to be respected,” he said. “I haven't gone into great detail as to the horses left in the race but there's a 3-year-old carrying next to no weight, which is something you can't discard. She's the favourite and she should be, but we're not going there thinking she's a sure thing. It's a horse race and we know Goodwood offers some upsets at times.”

“I'm not here to put a dampener on it because on sheer ability, there's no race,” he added. “She's a bit buzzy, because she went to Ascot and had to come back but other than that she's fine. It's important she runs at the end of July and it didn't happen last weekend. That's the main point–she needs to run somewhere, because she's really well and fit. I don't want to deceive her by going back home and keep on working her there to get the freshness out of her without racing.”

Weather is always a concern for Menuisier, but there is rain forecast ahead of the race. “Obviously we're still hoping for some rain before Saturday to keep it on the slow side, because it's drying out quickly,” he said. “Good ground would be okay and if we don't get any more rain I think that's what it will be. I just know that on quicker ground she can't reach the levels she does on soft, so then it is a question of opposition.”

Koji Maeda's July 8 G3 Stanerra S. winner Believe In Love (Ire) (Make Believe {GB}) will be in the mix if the favourite fails to fire, while the weight-for-age is a staggering 15 pounds which brings Ballydoyle's June 4 G1 Epsom Oaks third and July 17 G1 Irish Oaks runner-up Divinely (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) into the equation as the sole 3-year-old in the line-up.

“She has developed into a very solid, classy filly and now has two Classic-placed performances to her name,” jockey Ryan Moore said. “She operates on any ground, so the weather can do what it wants and you have to like her chances as the only 3-year-old in here getting a hefty 12 pounds from most and 15 from Wonderful Tonight.”

At Newmarket, Juddmonte's rare jewel Chiasma (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) lines up for the Listed British Stallion Studs EBF Chalice S. The John and Thady Gosden-trained full-sister to Frankel (GB) faces tough opposition in the 12-furlong contest as she bids to build on her novice win at Kempton last time June 30.

“It's a good renewal of the race and some of the fillies in there have got some strong form by their names,” Thady Gosden said. “Chiasma won last time out which was important for her and for Juddmonte. Now we hope to get some black-type next to her name with a pedigree like hers. If the ground is faster it won't be a worry, although it is due to rain and she has already run on soft ground. She shows a great attitude at home and enjoys her work.”

Another Juddmonte runner is the unbeaten Ralph Beckett-trained Yesyes (GB) (Camelot {GB}), who has impressed at Haydock May 28 and Lingfield July 14.

“The mile and a half on the July Course should suit her really well, particularly as they have a drop of rain forecast,” her trainer said. “Her first run has been given a boost and it is lovely form. We've had to be patient with her, as she was slow to come to hand. Last year she was a big filly and was simply not ready to race.”

Godolphin's Sayyida (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) is a half-sister to Masar (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}) with two course-and-distance wins to her name May 16 and June 26 and Charlie Appleby is looking forward to seeing how she fares in a tough contest.

“We will be slightly on weather watch, as we would like a bit of rain as it was quick enough there on her last start,” he explained. “We are pleased with her preparation and the one thing she does is stay well.”

Newmarket Red Leads Racing League

Team Newmarket Red leads the Racing League standings after the first card at Newcastle on Thursday evening, despite failing to post a winner.

The six-race card was the first of six meetings that comprise the £1.8-million Racing League, which pits 12 teams against each other in races worth £50,000 apiece. Team Newmarket Red, comprised of Robert Cowell, John and Thady Gosden, Sir Mark Prescott and David Simcock recorded three seconds and two thirds, good for 85 points. Team talkSPORT sits second.

Broadcaster Rupert Bell, who manages Team talkSPORT along with Alan Brazil, said, “There does seem to be quite a nice, friendly feeling about it, with all the teams doing their bit. I think it does feel right. It's a long haul, but if the racing can stay as competitive as it is at the moment, that's great. You've guaranteed 10 to 12 runner fields and surely the racecourses want that and the betting industry wants that.”

Paul Mulrennan, who rode Saluti to win the opening race for Team Arena, said, “At the end of the day, there's a lot of money being pumped into our sport, which can't be anything but good. I know there's a few people unhappy they've not been able to compete this year, but it might be their time next year. It could be a different trainer or jockey that gets a chance.

“There's a real good buzz in the weighing room tonight. All the teams and everything just makes it a bit different–it's not your usual Thursday night at Newcastle.”

Frankel’s Inspiral Dominates Sandown Feature

Cheveley Park Stud's homebred 2-year-old filly Inspiral (GB) (Frankel {GB}), a daughter of G1 1000 Guineas and G1 Coronation S. runner-up Starscope (GB) (Selkirk), overcame a slow start to prevail in a June 26 maiden going seven furlongs at Newmarket on debut last time and laid down a marker with an impressive 3 1/2-length win in Thursday's Listed British Stallion Studs EBF Star S. over the same trip at Sandown. Anchored at the tail of the field after a deliberate break, the even-money favourite made rapid headway on the bridle in the straight and powered clear once gaining the upper hand approaching the final furlong to outclass her eight rivals in taking fashion. At the line, she was clear of Godolphin's dual winner Wild Beauty (GB) (Frankel {GB}) with a neck back to her stablemate Sunstrike (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) in third.

“She's always been a classy filly and has just done normal work on the bridle at home,” explained winning trainer John Gosden after claiming a first win in the contest. “Her mother was with us, and she had a lot of ability, and we know all about the father. We thought this was the race to come for, they went pretty strong up front and she won very nicely. Frankie [Dettori] was out the back before coming around them and said he hit the front far too soon. I think it was a pretty hot event and she's not been in front like that before so she did well. She'll have no problem getting a mile and we'll go one step at a time. The [G2] May Hill S. at Doncaster would be an obvious place to go and gives her five or six weeks between races.”

Inspiral is one of four winners from as many runners produced by G1 1000 Guineas and G1 Coronation S. runner-up Starscope (GB) (Selkirk), herself a half-sister to Listed Rosemary S. victrix Solar Magic (GB) (Pivotal {GB}). Starscope, who is out of a half-sister to MG1SW sire Medicean (GB) (Machiavellian), has also produced last term's Listed Cocked Hat S. third Celestran (GB) (Dansili {GB}) and a weanling colt by Siyouni (Fr). Inspiral's MGSP third dam Mystic Goddess (Storm Bird), who annexed the Listed Sweet Solera S., is a half-sister to G1 Gran Criterium-winning sire Sanam (Golden Act) and MG1SP dual Group 2 winner Shaybani (Al Nasr {Fr}).
