Joel Rosario Fined For Misjudging Finish At Oaklawn

Top jockey Joel Rosario has been fined $200 by stewards at Oaklawn Park after riding “well past the finish wire” on April 10, reports the Thoroughbred Daily News.

Rosario was aboard favorite Rushie in the $400,000 Oaklawn Mile, a one-mile contest over the main track which begins and ends at the sixteenth pole in lieu of the regular finish line. Though Rushie was passed by By My Standards for the victory, Rosario continued to ride his mount another sixteenth of a mile, apparently misjudging the wire.

Gabriel Saez, aboard By My Standards, appeared to speak to Rosario after the wire, with Saez “reaching out left-handed to give Rosario a seemingly friendly post-race tap on the right shoulder.”

Rosario Fined for Misjudging Finish in Nose Loss on Stakes Favorite

Jockey Joel Rosario, who leads North America with 20 stakes wins this year, was fined $200 for misjudging the finish wire aboard a 9-5 favorite who lost an Apr. 10 stakes race by a nose at Oaklawn Park.

Rosario piloted Rushie (Liam's Map) in the $400,000 Oaklawn Mile S., but apparently forgot races at that distance at the track end at the sixteenth pole and not the traditional finish line.

Rushie had seized the lead off the turn and was getting reeled in by a fast-closing By My Standards (Goldencents) as the sixteenth-pole finish loomed.

By My Standards seemed to have the winning momentum regardless of where Rosario thought the wire was, but the head-on replay reveals that Rosario was still driving Rushie while Gabriel Saez rose in the saddle aboard By My Standards.

The two jockeys appeared to speak while galloping out on the far turn, with Saez reaching out left-handed to give Rosario a seemingly friendly post-race tap on the right shoulder.

The official Equibase chart notes that Rosario “continued riding well past the finish wire.”

The ruling was issued Sunday by the Oaklawn stewards.

Flavien Prat Picks Up Derby Mount On Hot Rod Charlie

Jockey Flavien Prat will ride Hot Rod Charlie in the Kentucky Derby on May 1 at Churchill Downs, reports the Daily Racing Form. The 3-year-old son of Oxbow won the Louisiana Derby last out under Joel Rosario, who may have other commitments on the first Saturday in May, including Concert Tour for trainer Bob Baffert.

Trained by Doug O'Neill, Hot Rod Charlie got acquainted with Prat during a five-furlong work at Santa Anita on Saturday. The pair stopped the clock in 1:01 1/5, 27th of 66 at the distance.

On Monday, O'Neill told DRF: “Both Joel and Flavien are world-class jocks. Flavien was able to commit to Charlie. We're excited moving forward.”

O'Neill has Kentucky Derby wins with I'll Have Another (2012) and Nyquist (2016) on his resume, while Prat was awarded the victory via disqualification on Country House in 2019.

Hot Rod Charlie ran second in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile last year off a maiden victory, then ran third in the G3 Bob Lewis in his first start as a 3-year-old. He won the Louisiana Derby by two lengths over Midnight Bourbon, O Besos, and Proxy.

Edgeway Earns Initial Stakes Victory In Oaklawn’s Carousel

Prominent from the outset, Hronis Racing LLC's Edgeway got the jump on even-money favorite Frank's Rockette and cruised to victory in Saturday's $250,000 Carousel Stakes at Oaklawn in Hot Springs, Ark., giving the daughter of Competitive Edge her first triumph in a black type race.

Trained by John Sadler and ridden by Joel Rosario, Edgeway ran the six furlongs on a fast main track in 1:10.13 and paid $4.60 as the second wagering choice in the field of six fillies and mare, aged 4 and up.

Frank's Rockette closed to within three-quarters of a length of Edgeway at the wire to be second, with Casual another 1 1/4 lengths back third and Wildwood's Beauty fourth.

Edgeway, third to Kimari in just her second career start in the Purple Martin Stakes at Oaklawn last year, was coming off a Feb. 7 allowance win at Santa Anita, her first start since a runner-up performance in the Grade 3 Dogwood Stakes at Churchill Downs last June. She trained up to the Carousel at Santa Anita.

Mucho Amor jumped out to an early lead, with Edgeway to her outside, but that pair was quickly joined by Wildwood's Beauty who rushed up along the inside to put her nose in front. Those three raced as a team, with Edgeway three wide around the turn and Frank's Rockette track her while a couple of lengths further back. Early fractions were :22.54 for the opening quarter mile and :46.12 for the half.

Edgeway took command in the stretch, passing the furlong marker in :58.08 and sailed on to victory, her fourth in six starts.

Produced from Magical Solution, by Stormin Fever, Edgeway is a 4-year-old bred in Kentucky by Pope McLean, Valerie and David Blethen. She sold for $275,000 at the OBS April Sale of 2-year-olds in training in 2019, where she was consigned by Mayberry Farm.
