David Cabrera’s Three Stakes Wins Lead To Jockey Of The Week Title

Remington Park's leading jockey, David Cabrera, won three stakes at his home track to be voted Jockey of the Week for Dec. 14 through Dec. 20. The award, which is voted on by a panel of racing experts, is for jockeys who are members of the Jockeys' Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 active riders in the United States as well as retired and permanently disabled jockeys.

Cabrera began his stakes triple during the Friday night card with trainer Kenny McPeek giving him a leg up on Jeweled Princess in the She's All In Stakes at one mile and 70 yards. Jeweled Princess advanced off the final turn to win by a head over fast closing Istan Council.

“She was not intimidated at all coming up the rail,” said Cabrera.

Cabrera then had the mount on Dipping In for trainer H. Ray Ashford, Jr. in the Useeit Stakes for Oklahoma-breds. The 3-year-old filly stopped the timer in 1:40.69 over a fast track to win the one mile contest on the dirt by a length, giving Cabrera his third of four wins on the card.

Trainer Kenny McPeek again gave Cabrera a leg up in the Trapeze Stakes at one mile on the favorite, Oliviaofthedesert. Riding the 2-year-old filly for the first time, Cabrera broke 10th in the field of 10. At the top of the lane, she pushed through an opening on the rail to just get up for the win.

Then on Saturday, Cabrera rode Oklahoma two-time Horse of the Year Welder in an open-company allowance contest, tying the all-time mark for most wins at Remington Park with 15.

“This horse,” said Cabrera, regular rider of Welder, “you have to let him do what he wants to do. If you try something different, he doesn't like it.”

Cabrera led all jockeys by number of stakes wins with weekly stats of 21-7-2-3 and $207,297 in purses.

The native of Mexico notched his 1,000th career win at Prairie Meadows in 2019. In addition to Remington Park, Cabrera rides regularly at Sam Houston Race Park, Lone Star Park, Prairie Meadows and Will Rogers.

Cabrera out-polled Eric Cancel who was leading jockey by purse earnings, Tyler Gaffalione who won the Grade III Mr. Prospector, Luis Saez, leading jockey by number of wins, and Ricardo Santana, Jr. who won two stakes races at Fair Grounds.

Graded Stakes Double Propels Emisael Jaramillo To Jockey Of The Week Honors

A Gulfstream Park graded stakes double helped propel Emisael Jaramillo to Jockey of the Week honors for the week of Dec. 7 through Dec. 13. The award, which is voted on by a panel of racing experts, is for jockeys who are members of the Jockeys' Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 active riders in the United States as well as retired and permanently disabled jockeys.

Jaramillo won both stakes in which he was entered on Saturday, Dec. 12 at Gulfstream Park. First, he was aboard Letruska for trainer Fausto Gutierrez in the Grade 3 Rampart Stakes. Racing without blinkers for the first time in her career and favored at 3-2 in the field of six, Letruska completed the one mile in 1:35.03 over a fast main track. He returned later in the card to win the Grade 3 Sugar Swirl with Lady's Island who ran six furlongs in 1:10.46 for trainer Georgina Baxter.

This past May, Jaramillo registered his 1,000th victory in North America. The 43-year-old Venezuelan rode more than 4,000 winners in his native country, where he was a 13-time champion and all-time leading rider. He rode his first professional race in 1996 and the next year was competing at his country's premier racetrack, La Rinconada in Caracas where he won his first title in 1999. He has ridden more than 200 winners in each of the last five years primarily at Gulfstream Park and Gulfstream Park West where he has been a mainstay since moving his tack to south Florida in 2015.

Weekly stats for Jaramillo were 30-3-4-3 with total purse earnings of $187,800.

Jaramillo out-polled fellow riders Adam Beschizza who won two stakes races at Fair Grounds, Kendrick Carmouche who won the Bay Ridge Stakes at Aqueduct, Marcelino Pedroza who won two stakes races at Fair Grounds and Tim Thornton who topped all riders in wins with 11.

Jockeys’ Guild Annual Assembly Focuses On Crop Use, COVID-19 Challenges

The Jockeys' Guild held its Annual Meeting sponsored by TVG/Betfair virtually this year on Dec. 8, 2020. The Guild and its members continue to be appreciative of the working relationship with TVG/Betfair and its unwavering support of both the Jockeys' Guild and the Permanently Disabled Jockeys' Fund. The virtual meeting was attended by active jockeys from around the country.

The highlights included a riding crop discussion and update with regards to the various state regulations and track house rules which have been adopted this year. Co-chairmen John Velazquez and Mike Smith led a discussion with the riders from the various states where new riding crop rules have been implemented. The jockeys voiced their concerns and input regarding changes that have occurred with racing, as well as their ongoing fears with regards to the safety issues created by the restrictive use of the riding crop. It was noted that the Jockeys' Guild has and will continue to talk with regulators, industry participants, and stewards, to seek a fair, equitable national riding crop rule for all racing jurisdictions.

John Von Stade, of Accelerated Growth Partners, made a presentation to the members regarding a potential opportunity to provide exposure for the jockeys. The ideas and possibilities would be similar to those being provided to other professional athletes and the leagues through the use of social media and online platforms. This opportunity will potentially provide horse racing fans an insider's perspective that is interesting and entertaining.

As with the case in most aspects of life, COVID-19 has had a significant impact on the racing industry and, in particular, the jockeys. In order to assure that racing is able to continue in the safest manner possible, riders were advised on the current updates to the COVID-19 protocols, recognizing that the protocols vary from state to state and racetrack to racetrack, with changes occurring frequently based on updated recommendations from the CDC, as well as the local health departments. It was reiterated that jockeys and/or their agents need to make sure they are up-to-date on each track's current protocols before they make plans to ride at a specific track.

The members were also provided an update on the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund (“PDJF”). Like so many other non-profit organizations, COVID-19 has had a detrimental impact on the customary fundraising efforts. However, with the continued support of committed and generous donors, as well as many of the individual jockeys who make contributions, some funds have been received in order to continue to provide the ongoing support of those catastrophically injured jockeys who rely on the assistance of the PDJF. It was announced, based on the hope of lessening of COVID-19 restrictions next year, the organization will launch a major initiative in 2021.

The members were updated on the Jockeys' Guild app which will enhance communication between the Guild and its members. The Jockeys' Guild budget and financials were also presented.

The riders in attendance re-elected John Velazquez and Mike Smith as co-chairmen, Ricky Ramirez, Julien Leparoux and Javier Castellano as Vice-Chairs, Joel Campbell as treasurer and Rodney Prescott as secretary. Joe Bravo and Alex Birzer were re-elected and Drayden Van Dyke was newly elected to the board of directors.

Additionally, the Guild announced that 27 members have been elected to the organization's senate, who are elected by fellow members of the Guild, with nine from each of the three regions. Among other responsibilities, the senate determines the levels of dues and assessments and selects the board members. Senate members are elected for a two-year term and were formally inducted during the virtual meeting. The elected senate includes the following individuals:

Eastern – Joe Bravo, Javier Castellano, Mike Luzzie, Irad Ortiz Jr., Jose Ortiz, Trevor McCarthy, Edgar Prado, Sheldon Russell, John R. Velasquez, Junior Alvarado (Alt.)

After Emotional Milestone Weekend, Kendrick Carmouche Voted Jockey Of The Week

Kendrick Carmouche marked two professional milestones the week of November 30 through December 6. He won his first Grade I race with True Timber in the Cigar Mile on Saturday and then ended the week by earning his first NYRA Jockey title at the Aqueduct Fall Meet. The achievements earned Carmouche the title of Jockey of the Week. The award, which is voted on by a panel of racing experts, is for jockeys who are members of the Jockeys' Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 active riders in the United States as well as retired and permanently disabled jockeys.

A field of six went to the post for the Cigar Mile. Under Carmouche, True Timber broke sharp from post 5 and tracked in third position behind the leader, Mr. Buff. Heading into the stretch, Carmouche set True Timber down and easily held off late bids from Snapper Sinclair and post time favorite Performer to hit the wire by 5-1/2 lengths in 1:36.49.

“I had perfect position leaving the gate and all the way around there,” said Carmouche. “Right before we got to the quarter pole, I pulled the trigger and I knew they were going to have to run me down from here.”

“It's my first Grade I. I owe it all to my fans, my wife and kids and how much they stuck with me and kept me pushing and fighting in this game,” said an emotional Carmouche. “This means so much to me. This is the biggest win of my career and I hope I have many more blessed ones.”

On Sunday, Carmouche, a mainstay on the NYRA circuit, registered his first-ever riding title for a New York Racing Association meet with 23 victories for the 18-day fall meet at Aqueduct. No stranger to earning riding titles, Carmouche won seven at Parx from 2008-2011 earning him induction into that track's Hall of Fame in 2015.

“I give thanks to everyone who put a good effort into supporting me and pushed me along to win this meet. I'm very appreciative.” Carmouche said. “I seized the opportunity at hand and I am very grateful for all the trainers and owners for letting me show other people that I can win races.”

Carmouche's weekly stats were 28-7-4-5 and $536,576 in purses won to lead all jockeys.

Carmouche out-polled fellow jockeys Sonny Leon who was second in number of wins for the week, Jose Lezcano who tied for number of wins with nine and won a stakes race at Aqueduct, Paco Lopez who tied for number of wins with nine and Luis Saez who won five Claiming Crown stakes at Gulfstream Park.
