Apprentice Morales Living Up To His Commitments At Indiana Grand

The 2020 season has brought challenges to those involved in racing. With COVID-19 regulations in place, Indiana Grand jockeys must only ride in Indiana, and those coming in must adhere to specific rules, including a 14-day quarantine. It's a commitment that Apprentice Jockey Joshua Morales didn't back down from.

A native of Puerto Rico, Morales knows all about commitment. He attended his country's Escuela Vocacional Hipica Agustin Mercado Reveron jockey school at Camarero Race Track near San Juan. Known for its rigorous curriculum that spans up to two years, Morales entered the school and graduated last August at the age of 19, ready to tackle the world of Thoroughbred racing.

“My two uncles (Wilfredo Rohena and Jose Rohena) are jockeys at Finger Lakes,” said Morales through his valet, Ramiro Torres. “I came to the United States a couple different times and worked as a hot walker at Finger Lakes, but I never had any plans to be a jockey. My friends influenced me because of my size and build. That's how I ended up going to jockey school.”

Morales began riding in Puerto Rico and in January, relocated to Turfway Park, which eventually took him to Belterra Park. Although he was riding a lot, his business wasn't taking him in the direction he wanted, so a suggestion from Nelson Figueroa, clerk of scales at Belterra, got him connected to agent Francisco Torres.

“Nelson and I go way back and a recommendation from him was all I needed,” said Torres. “I'm always shopping for another apprentice. I feel in this stage in my life, it's time to give back and working with these younger riders is what I like. He sure looks great on a horse and he has great hands. When he puts everything together, look out.”

Morales made the move to Indiana Grand and put in the mandatory time for the 14-day quarantine. During that time, Morales worked on an equicizer and Torres began to share some pointers for the apprentice, who turns 21 next week.

“Cisco has helped me out a lot,” said Morales. “Not only on the track but off the track, helping me find an apartment for my family and getting settled. He has corrected a few things already about my riding and helped me improve.”

Morales got out of the gate with a win on his very first day of competition at Indiana Grand, Sept. 7. Since that time, he has scored two riding doubles with seven wins total in only 10 days of racing. He and Torres are working on short term goals with hopes of opening some doors in the near future.

“The goal is to become leading apprentice here,” added Torres. “Then, he will either go to Turfway or possibly Oaklawn with me. We will just wait and see how it works out.”

Morales and his partner, Chareen, have two young sons, Owen, age four, and Harlan, 16 months. He also has support from his father, Javier, who is a former exercise rider. He is currently overseeing his son's start in racing.

“His two uncles wanted bigger and better things for him, so that is why he didn't go to Finger Lakes,” said Javier. “Jockey school was very good for him. It is very disciplined. The last semester, they have 20 races a day, 10 for a start of a race and 10 for a finish of a race. There were five that graduated from his class and four are now riding in the United States. He even had a personal trainer in school that helped him learn about keeping his weight down and keeping in shape.”

One of those graduates with Morales, Alex Crispin, competed at Indiana Grand in the first few weeks of competition this year before relocating to Delaware Park. Another from the same class includes Marielis Cosme currently riding at Mountaineer Park.

Racing is held Monday through Thursday until Wednesday, Nov. 18. All-Quarter Horse racing is set for Saturday, Oct. 3 and Saturday, Oct. 24. For more information, go to www.indianagrand.com.

‘I Needed A Good Day Like That’: Red-Hot Moreira Piloted Six Winners Sunday At Sha Tin

Joao Moreira enjoyed one of his most prolific days in the saddle on Sunday at Sha Tin with a six-timer, and he heads to Wednesday's (23 September) eight-race program at Happy Valley looking to continue his red-hot form with a full book of mounts, including Beauty Applause (120lb) in the feature, the Class 2 Big Wave Bay Handicap.

“It was a day I'll never forget!” Moreira said. “I needed a good day like that badly, as I needed to build up my confidence for myself and of course the relationships with the trainers.”

The Brazilian ace has had a flying start to the 2020/21 season with 14 wins from five race meetings and he leads by six in the jockeys' premiership, with Zac Purton and Karis Teetan locked on eight wins.

“I knew I was going to have a good start to the season but six winners in a day at the beginning is always a big plus and hopefully we can keep on kicking winners,” he said.

Moreira's book of midweek mounts is highlighted by his renewed association with the John Size-trained Beauty Applause in the finale, a hot sprint which features 11 others and in which the flashy chestnut will make his city circuit debut.

“It's his first time at the track, so no one knows but he's the kind of horse who indicates that Happy Valley won't be a problem,” Moreira said.

The 5-year-old is a four-time winner over 1200m (about six furlongs), and, since his debut, he has added 35 rating points to his mark (87).

“The races aren't as strong as they are at Sha Tin, so the competition won't be as strong as he has previously faced,” Moreira observed. “His last run over 1400 metres (about seven furlongs), he fatigued over the last 200 metres so the drop back in distance, I think, is going to suit him even better.”

A usual on-pace runner, the Size-trainee will need to contend with gate 10 in the field of 12.

“Two starts ago he didn't jump the best at Sha Tin and he ended up in behind, but he finished off the race very well, so I think we have options with him,” Moreira said.

Wednesday's hot sprint also features last season's Most Improved Horse, the Jimmy Ting-trained Amazing Star (133lb), as well as Waldorf (133lb), Massive Pocket (121lb), California Rad (119lb) and Golden Dash (116lb).

Beauty Applause is not the only Kwok family-owned horse that Moreira will team with on Wednesday evening, the 36-year-old is also set to ride last-start victor Beauty Angel in the Class 4 South Bay Handicap.

“He won his race at Sha Tin where I would say the fields are a little bit stronger, so he just needs to produce what he did at his last start to be a good strong chance at Happy Valley,” the ace rider said.

The Hong Kong International Sale graduate broke through at his 10th and final start of last season and Moreira indicated that he could continue his ascent up the handicap.

“He should improve – last start he showed me he has good character and he does things straightforwardly, so I don't see why he can't take another step forward. I think he'll get into Class 3 in the near future,” Moreira said.

Floyd Wethey Rides 1,000th Winner Thursday At Remington Park

Jockey Floyd Wethey, Jr. won for the 1,000th time in his career Thursday night, winning the fourth race in wire-to-wire fashion aboard Elijah Anet at Remington Park.

Wethey gives credit for reaching the milestone to the support of those around him and riding for 14 years, relatively without injury.

“I started riding when I was 17 and I had always hoped to reach milestones like this,” said Wethey, who calls both Bluejacket, Okla. and Oklahoma City his homes. “It's a great milestone and not a whole lot of people do it. I've had a lot of help. I thank the good Lord that I have so many friends and family that support me.”

Wethey went straight to the lead in the irons of Elijah Anet and made every pole a winning one in the 5 1/2-furlong race for claiming $7,500 Oklahoma-bred horses, 3-years-old and older. They covered the distance with fractions of :21.98 seconds for the first quarter-mile, :45.48 for the half-mile and :57.93 for five furlongs before winning in a time of 1:04.64. The betting public sent the 4-year-old gelding by Silver City, out of the Anet mare Sister Anet, off at 5-2 odds and he paid $7.80 to win, $4.40 to place and $3.80 to show.

“I've ridden a lot of great horses that gave me thrills, winning Oklahoma Classics races and other stakes,” said Wethey. “I had Reel Chrome, Steal Your Face and Okie Ride and they all are very special. Hey, I even get attached to the claimers. Reel Chrome, she was tough as nails.”

He will certainly always remember one claimer, Elijah Anet.

“The meet has been great so far; (agent) Bubba (Wood) has gotten me on some good horses and I've been lucky enough to win a few,” he said. “Looking back, I've won two or three riding titles at Claremore (Will Rogers Downs) and three or four in Tulsa (Fair Meadows. I'm just going to keep on keeping on.”

Wethey began riding in 2007, winning 21 races his first year and $198,195. He quickly boosted that to 83 wins the next year with his horses winning $1,342,941. Twelve of the 14 years of riding his horses have surpassed $1 million in earnings. His biggest year came in 2018 when they banked $2,040,568. He has surpassed 100 wins in a year twice – 109 in 2009 and 103 in 2017.
