Graded Stakes Double Propels Emisael Jaramillo To Jockey Of The Week Honors

A Gulfstream Park graded stakes double helped propel Emisael Jaramillo to Jockey of the Week honors for the week of Dec. 7 through Dec. 13. The award, which is voted on by a panel of racing experts, is for jockeys who are members of the Jockeys' Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 active riders in the United States as well as retired and permanently disabled jockeys.

Jaramillo won both stakes in which he was entered on Saturday, Dec. 12 at Gulfstream Park. First, he was aboard Letruska for trainer Fausto Gutierrez in the Grade 3 Rampart Stakes. Racing without blinkers for the first time in her career and favored at 3-2 in the field of six, Letruska completed the one mile in 1:35.03 over a fast main track. He returned later in the card to win the Grade 3 Sugar Swirl with Lady's Island who ran six furlongs in 1:10.46 for trainer Georgina Baxter.

This past May, Jaramillo registered his 1,000th victory in North America. The 43-year-old Venezuelan rode more than 4,000 winners in his native country, where he was a 13-time champion and all-time leading rider. He rode his first professional race in 1996 and the next year was competing at his country's premier racetrack, La Rinconada in Caracas where he won his first title in 1999. He has ridden more than 200 winners in each of the last five years primarily at Gulfstream Park and Gulfstream Park West where he has been a mainstay since moving his tack to south Florida in 2015.

Weekly stats for Jaramillo were 30-3-4-3 with total purse earnings of $187,800.

Jaramillo out-polled fellow riders Adam Beschizza who won two stakes races at Fair Grounds, Kendrick Carmouche who won the Bay Ridge Stakes at Aqueduct, Marcelino Pedroza who won two stakes races at Fair Grounds and Tim Thornton who topped all riders in wins with 11.

After Emotional Milestone Weekend, Kendrick Carmouche Voted Jockey Of The Week

Kendrick Carmouche marked two professional milestones the week of November 30 through December 6. He won his first Grade I race with True Timber in the Cigar Mile on Saturday and then ended the week by earning his first NYRA Jockey title at the Aqueduct Fall Meet. The achievements earned Carmouche the title of Jockey of the Week. The award, which is voted on by a panel of racing experts, is for jockeys who are members of the Jockeys' Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 active riders in the United States as well as retired and permanently disabled jockeys.

A field of six went to the post for the Cigar Mile. Under Carmouche, True Timber broke sharp from post 5 and tracked in third position behind the leader, Mr. Buff. Heading into the stretch, Carmouche set True Timber down and easily held off late bids from Snapper Sinclair and post time favorite Performer to hit the wire by 5-1/2 lengths in 1:36.49.

“I had perfect position leaving the gate and all the way around there,” said Carmouche. “Right before we got to the quarter pole, I pulled the trigger and I knew they were going to have to run me down from here.”

“It's my first Grade I. I owe it all to my fans, my wife and kids and how much they stuck with me and kept me pushing and fighting in this game,” said an emotional Carmouche. “This means so much to me. This is the biggest win of my career and I hope I have many more blessed ones.”

On Sunday, Carmouche, a mainstay on the NYRA circuit, registered his first-ever riding title for a New York Racing Association meet with 23 victories for the 18-day fall meet at Aqueduct. No stranger to earning riding titles, Carmouche won seven at Parx from 2008-2011 earning him induction into that track's Hall of Fame in 2015.

“I give thanks to everyone who put a good effort into supporting me and pushed me along to win this meet. I'm very appreciative.” Carmouche said. “I seized the opportunity at hand and I am very grateful for all the trainers and owners for letting me show other people that I can win races.”

Carmouche's weekly stats were 28-7-4-5 and $536,576 in purses won to lead all jockeys.

Carmouche out-polled fellow jockeys Sonny Leon who was second in number of wins for the week, Jose Lezcano who tied for number of wins with nine and won a stakes race at Aqueduct, Paco Lopez who tied for number of wins with nine and Luis Saez who won five Claiming Crown stakes at Gulfstream Park.

Four Stakes Wins Earn Junior Alvarado Jockey Of The Week Title

Four stakes wins over the Thanksgiving weekend led to Junior Alvarado named as Jockey of the Week for Nov. 23 through Nov. 29. The award, which is voted on by a panel of racing experts, is for jockeys who are members of the Jockeys' Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 active riders in the United States as well as retired and permanently disabled jockeys.

With no racing scheduled on Thanksgiving Day, Alvarado made the most of the three days of racing at Aqueduct with mounts in 10 stakes races. On Friday, Alvarado scored by a nose with City Man for trainer Christophe Clement in the Gio Ponti over a stubborn Bodecream.

“Every time Christophe Clement brings a horse over, it doesn't matter the odds, they always seem to be fighting to win the race,” Alvarado said.

Also on the Friday card, Alvarado was aboard Feel Glorious, again for Christophe Clement, winning the Forever Together by three-quarters of a length.

“I had the best filly,” said Alvarado. “Turning for home, I put her in the clear to the outside and when she switched leads, she started picking it up.”

Fresh off a successful Friday, Alvarado had the mount on Forza Di Oro for trainer Bill Mott in the Grade 3 Discovery on Saturday. Around the far turn, Alvarado guided Forza Di Oro through an opening and drew off by 3-3/4 lengths.

“When he switches leads like he did today, he gives that next gear, Alvarado said.

On Sunday, trainer Bill Mott gave a leg up to Alvarado in the Tepin aboard Lovestruck who repelled a threat by Invincible Gal to hit the wire in 1:47.14.

“We were expecting the kind of run from her that we saw today,” said Alvarado. “There's still room for her to improve.”

As the leading rider by stakes wins, Alvarado posted a 22.72 percent win rate while in-the-money on 54.54 percent of his mounts. With five wins, three seconds and four thirds from 22 mounts, his purse earnings totaled $383,602.

Alvarado out-polled Rafael Bejarano who was the leading jockey by purse earnings, Irad Ortiz, Jr. who won three stakes races at Del Mar, Joel Rosario who won two stakes races at Del Mar and Tim Thornton who was the leading jockey by total wins with 10.

Jockey Of The Week: Tyler Gaffalione Wins 15 Races At Churchill Downs

After leading the nation in wins and total purse money for the week, Tyler Gaffalione was named Jockey of the Week for Nov. 16 through Nov. 22. The award, which is voted on by a panel of racing experts, is for jockeys who are members of the Jockeys' Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 active riders in the United States as well as retired and permanently disabled jockeys.

Beginning the week at Churchill Downs on Wednesday, Tyler Gaffalione won three races, one each for trainers Mike Maker, Chad Brown and Eddie Kenneally. He picked up three more wins on Thursday with two for Mike Maker and one for David Vance. On Friday, Gaffalione continued his winning ways with four more wins, one each for trainers Bernie Flint, Mike Maker, Bret Calhoun and James DiVito. Saturday saw Gaffalione head to the winner's circle four times with two wins for Mike Maker and one each for Phil Sims and Mark Casse. In the final card of the week on Sunday, he posted one win for Chad Brown.

In addition to a 50 percent win rate for the week, Gaffalione hit the board with 76 percent of his mounts and $463,611 in total purses to lead all jockeys.

He out-polled fellow jockeys, Joe Bravo who had two stakes wins at Gulfstream Park West, Abel Cedillo who won the Cary Grant Stakes at Del Mar, Marcelino Pedroza with two stakes wins at Indiana Grand and Joel Rosario who won the New York Stallion Series Stakes at Aqueduct aboard Funny Guy.

Gaffalione has won 14 graded stakes so far this year including the Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational aboard Zulu Alpha. He was the Eclipse Award winning Apprentice in 2015.

Leading the jockey standings at the Churchill Downs Fall Meet with 32 wins, seven ahead of Ricardo Santana, Jr., Tyler will head to Gulfstream Park after Churchill Downs closes on Sunday.
